Warning and safety instructions
This user manual contains important safety instructions and information concerning
the use of the SCALEO Medical active transfer slings. Carefully read the manual
before using them with the lifters.
Before performing a transfer, make sure the sling is adapted to the pathology and
corpulence of the patient, and in particular that the patient weight does not exceed
the maximum capacity of the sling and/or of the patient lifter you are using. A
sudden break up of an element could cause severe injury to the patient and/or the
user.
Torn, cut, frayed or broken slings can fail, resulting in serious injury to the patient
and/or to the user. Only use slings in good condition.
The slings and the lifter are intended to lift and transfer people. Never use them to
lift or to carry objects.
Slings should never be bleached. The washing conditions and temperatures are
showed on the label.
The procedure for positioning the patient on the hoist is available in the user manual
of the patient lifter. Please refer to the manual for details.

General information
SCALEO Medical active slings are Class I medical devices, according to the European medical
device regulation 2017/745. They are compliant with the EN 10535 standard.
This user manual concerns the following slings:
• Quick transfer slings for home care (S8594XXX),
• Quick transfer Cocoon slings with abdominal belt (S8591xxx),
• Self-adjusting slings with abdominal belt (S8590xxx),
• Comfort slings with abdominal Belt (S8592xxx).
The xxx of the reference represents the 3 digits that correspond to the size of the sling.
They ensure a perfect back support and are easy to install in a few seconds thanks to its
exclusive attachment system.
This exclusive ergonomic transfer concept avoids the traumatic vertical traction perceived on
first-generation stand to sit lifters and help restoring the natural movement of the body.
The abdominal belt limits the sliding effect and reassures the transferred person.
Intended use
Designed for 2-point handlebars, the SCALEO active slings are intended to be used in
combination with a stand to sit patient lifter to perform sitting to sitting transfers.
They are compatible with the following equipment:
• Poweo® Activ’
• Poweo® City

Contraindications
The active transfer slings of SCALEO Medical are NOT intended to be used:
• When a patient is subject to loss of balance or discomfort,
• For patients whose mental state is impaired (agitated patients)
• In the case of medical contraindication of support following surgery of the shoulder, hip,
knee or ankle,
• In patients with severe flexion deformity of the knee amputation not allowing a
standing position, even with support,
• In disabled patients of the lower limbs,
• In patients with curvature of the spine,
• In patients with muscle spasm,
• In patients weighing more than the maximum load of the sling,
• To transfer patients over a long distance,
• To transfer patients on slopes.

Instructions for use
Raising and transferring the patient
For an ergonomic transfer, it is recommended to maintain a 90° angle for the back, the
knees and the ankles.
If the patient to be transferred is on a wheelchair, do not forget to block the brakes of
the chair before any transfer procedure.
Should the patient have its gravity center offset due to a very large size or
morphology, it is highly recommended to compensate this offset by shortening one of
the sling cords and by avoiding to raise the patient in a full upright position.
Whatever stand aid model is used, assisted rapid transfer is only for patients with
minimal tone in the lower limbs. When transferring, it is important that the patient's
shins are in contact with the lifter.
1. Place the sling on the lower back of the patient, making sure the bottom edge of the
sling is at the base of the spine. Pass the belt under the arms of the patient.
2. Secure the belt with the buckle and tighten the belt to secure the installation of the
sling.
3. Lower the handlebar to a minimum height while keeping it raised. Brake the lifter for
agitated patients or if the patient has spasms.
4. Position the lifter facing the patient, open the legs of the lifter if needed. The feet of the
patient should rest on the base of the lifter.
5. Lower the handle, then pass the sling under the arms of the patient.
6. Secure the sling cords tightly and symmetrically, by positioning them in the notch on the
handlebars. The ropes should preferably be placed from the inside to the outside of the

The cords must be tightened firmly before lifting. They will slide and lock under the
effect of the weight during lifting. If the cords are not tight enough, lifting could be
asymmetrical and less comfortable.
If the patient is heavy, it is recommended to attach the cords to the outside of the
handlebars and increase their amplitude. This will avoid pinching.
7. Using the remote control, gently lift the patient and tighten the cords until his buttocks
are off the chair.
8. Unlock the brakes of the lifter and transfer the patient.
Ensure that the patient holds the handlebar with his hands during the transfer, or at
least that his hands are out of reach of any moving part of the lifter.
Avoid raising the patient to a full standing position; this position is less comfortable than
the sitting position in the transfer operation.
Pull down the rope to secure the installation.

The Cocoon slings feature a polyurethane coated polyester interior lining. This coating
eliminates the gliding effect, provides more flexibility and a softness sensation.
Polyester active transfer sling for home
They also offer a polyurethane coated polyester interior lining.
Polyester quick active self adjusting sling
The self-adjusting function of the slings is naturally activated during the standing process,
thanks to the abdominal retraction of the patient.
Polyurethane active Comfort slings
The particularly generous padding of the sub-axillary parts of the Comfort sling provides a
maximum comfort and avoids shearing. Its polyurethane design provides a good elasticity and
its impermeability limits the risks of nosocomial infections.

Cleaning, disinfecting and maintenance
Cleaning and disinfecting
In order to prevent nosocomial infections, prefer vinyl or polyester slings. In the case
of severe risk, discard the old sling and use a new one.
Good cleaning and maintenance practices allow a longer life and upmost security of the
slings.
• Slings must be washed separately, allowing a cleaning without machine drying with
standard cleaning products.
• The washing temperature and the allowed products for cleaning are indicated on the
label.
• Never use autoclaves.
• Air dry or on a flat surface, never use a dryer.
The polyurethane and polyester slings are “softened” when dried or when
washed in washing tunnels. This reduces their efficiency and their lifespan as it
may cause serious shear to the sling.
Periodic inspection and preventive maintenance
The preventive maintenance for the slings must be performed regularly every six (6) months,
according to annex B of the EN ISO 10535 standard and the recommendations from the
competent health authorities.
1. Check the readability of the label.
2. Check carefully for wear and damage to the following:
§ Fabric,
§ Straps,
§ Seams,
§ Buckles.

Always verify the status of the sling before use and especially after washing it.
If a single point of control is inconsistent DO NOT use the sling. A damaged sling
breaking can cause serious injury to the patient.
It is strongly advised to keep all inspection records in the event of an incident.
SCALEO Medical should be informed of the result of inspections performed on its devices.
A traceability label on the back of the sling enables to keep track of the preventive
controls and the cleaning and disinfecting operations. Use a permanent marker to
record your intervention.

Technical specifications
The life time of the sling depends mainly on the frequency of use and of the cleaning protocol.
As a guide a sling used daily and maintained weekly in accordance with the requirements can
normally be used during five years.

Warranty, liability and end of life
Warranty
The active transfer slings of SCALEO Medical have a one (1) year warranty.
• Any abnormal use or non-compliant usage will result in the cancellation of the warranty.
• Any modifications to the product will render the warranty void.
Liability
SCALEO Medical assumes no liability for any injury or harm and consequences thereof directly
or indirectly caused to operators, patients, or any third party in the following cases:
• Non-compliance of the instructions and recommendations supplied within the present
user manual.
• Abnormal use of the equipment, negligence, accident, human error, or maintenance
and cleaning with non-adapted products.
• REGULAR PREVENTIVE AND ANNUAL MAINTENANCE IS NOT CARRIED OUT in
accordance with the annex B of the EN ISO 10535 standard, and the advices and
instructions presented in this manual.
End of life
The end of life disposal of the device must be done respecting the recycling circuit and local
relevant regulation.
