Preface
The Service Manual document contains the most important information that is relevant to typical service and maintenance activities.
If significant changes are made, then this document, along with the referenced attachments and related documents, will be updated and provided to registered
users for download in the service center.
The present document – additional details – is distributed in paper form as part of the face-to-face training sessions; however, it is not available for download
unrestricted.
As part of the training sessions, it serves to transmit - as the name already says - additional details and background. It also serves to enhance the depth of
self-directed studies.
Planned contents which is awaiting implementation/remain unavailable appears in italics in the document.

Important safety and hazard warnings
General safety instructions
CAUTION.
The hazard warnings listed here must be familiar and must be followed before opening, repairing, or maintaining the coffee machine.
Risk of Electrical Shock – Components carrying mains voltage
The coffee machine is not fully disconnected from the mains if only switched off!
Prior to any associated work, be sure to disconnect mains cable.
CAUTION.
Mains voltage is present at the mains cable connection, the power supply, the heater relays, the boilers at the heater connections, at
the temperature limiters, and their corresponding connecting lines.
Depressurize machine
CAUTION.
Boiler and steam boiler, valves and media-carrying hoses are under pressure and temperature.
Release pressure before carrying out maintenance or repair work and allow to cool off.

CAUTION.
Any parts that come into contact with media present a burn hazard.

1 Introduction / Basics
1.1 Machine concept
The Schaerer Barista opens up a revolutionary new machine concept the likes of which has never been seen before.
This machine concept combines the benefits of a fully automatic coffee machine with the high coffee quality and coffee culture of a semi-automatic coffee
machine, largely eliminating the disadvantages of the machine types mentioned above.
The Schaerer Barista offers the following:

•Ease of use- even for untrained staff, little training required

1.5.1 Portafilter
Description - structure
•There are 3 different sizes of portafilter.
The only difference between the portafilters is their size, as a result the cup volume for ground coffee chute varies; the principle structure of the portafilter
is the same.

1.5.2 Portafilter detection
Function description
•The brewing groups (portafilter supports) contain automatic portafilter detection.
•If a portafilter is inserted, the control will detect the portafilter size and automatically assigns the appropriate recipe to beverage buttons.
The size of the portafilter is automatically detected using magnets which are worked into the bayonet of the portafilter and the reed contacts in
Portafilter supports are installed.
•The safety switch - actuated via the switching curve - makes sure the brewer drive only moves when the portafilter is inserted correctly.

1.5.3 Brewer
Description - structure
•A vertically arranged piston brewer is installed without an ejection mechanism for each brewing group.
•The brewing piston/distributor sieve is connected with the brewer spindle via a bayonet connector and is protected from being pulled out with a pis-
ton lock.
•The vertically tamped ground coffee are brewed with hot water from top to bottom.
•The spindle is protected from dirt from the ground coffee chute with a bellow seal valve.
•The brewing end position (brewer calibration) is detected by a microswitch at the upper end of the brewing spindles.
Starting from this end position, all travel orders are identified which read from a Hall sensor in the brewer drive. The brewer calibration is carried out regu-
larly, several times a day.

1.5.4 Brewing temperature can be adjusted for specific beverages
Description of basic functions
•The brewing temperature can be set using the software specifically to the recipe.
•A proportional valve mixes cold water with hot brewing water coming from the flow heater, in a controlled fashion.
Brewing temperature regulating functions
•The initial opening path (=cold water mixing volume) after brewing cycle is started is predefined by the software based on the configured brewing
temperature; the proportional valve is operated with the voltage
•This voltage applies for 2 seconds; next control is performed using the NTC control circuit:
oNTC measures the real brewing temperature every 0.2 seconds.
oDeviations between the actual and configured brewing temperature result in continuous adjustment of the applied voltage
(and thus of the cold water proportioning amount)
Brewing temperature too low > reduction in voltage = reduction in the cold water proportioning amount
Brewing temperature too high > increase voltage = increase cold water proportioning amount
•The real brewing temperature is continuously shown in the display.
Important technical service instructions:
The proportional valve is based on the operational principle of a 2/2-path valve.
It is fitted against the flow direction. The cold water can be mixed more exactly via
the applied pressure. The opening path of the plunger is in proportion to the voltage
applying across the magnetic coil.

1.5.5 Heated cup storage with soft insert
The top cover, with integrated cup storage is fitted with a soft insert and surrounding railing which prevents the cups from tilting after the bean hopper is filled due
to the closing of the cup holder.
The cup storage is mounted on the machine holder with heater.
The heater can be activated/deactivated as follows; Default = activated
System – Settings – Cup heater
In the event of a repair:
If the cup heater is faulty, the cup storage with heater can be replaced.
The top cover need not be replaced.

1.5.6 Steam boiler pressure sensor
Description of basic functions
•The pressure sensor detects the operating pressure of the boiler, and there-
fore also indirectly the temperature setting -> 1.5 bar (equivalent to 127 °C)
If the actual pressure undershoots the set pressure – providing Low
Water is contacted – heat is applied until the pressure goes back up to
the set pressure
•Evaluation is analogue
Advantages of an analogue evaluation (regulator versus controller):
•Continuous evaluation of the pressure in the steam boiler
The heater is activated directly when the operating pressure
undershoots the set operating pressure of the boiler (in contrast to the
pressure switch, no longer dependent on the switching hysteresis)

Unlike other new generation machines, the Schaerer Barista does not have an event or error visualizationevent-, error and maintenance messages are solely
transmitted by means of display messages/display animations.
Error messages are normally displayed next to the symbol on the right of or at the top of the display.
