Bei Einstellung der ON/STAND-BY-Taste auf STAND-BY ist die
Netzspannung immer noch im Gerät vorhanden.
Wenn die ON/STAND-BY-Taste auf STAND-BY eingestellt wird, kann das

Precautions
„General
zPlease ensure that the equipment is positioned in a well ventilated area and
ensure that there is at least 10 cm (4") of free space along the sides, top and back
of the equipment.
Warning:
The voltage used must be the same as that specified on this unit. Using this product
with a higher voltage other than that which is specified is dangerous and may result in
a fire or other type of accident causing damage. SHARP will not be held responsible
for any damage resulting from use of this unit with a voltage other than that which is
specified.
„Volume control
The sound level at a given volume setting depends on speaker efficiency, location,
and various other factors. It is advisable to avoid exposure to high volume levels, to
avoid this do not turn the volume on to full at switch on and listen to music at moder-
ate levels.
„Care of compact discs
Compact discs are fairly resistant to damage, however mistracking can occur due to
an accumulation of dirt on the disc surface. Follow the guidelines below for maximum
enjoyment from your CD collection and player.
zDo not write on either side of the disc, particularly the non-label side from which
signals are read. Do not mark this surface.
zKeep your discs away from direct sunlight, heat, and excessive moisture.
zAlways hold the CDs by the edges. Fingerprints, dirt, or water on the CDs can
cause noise or mistracking. If a CD is dirty or does not play properly, clean it with a
soft, dry cloth, wiping straight out from the centre, along the radius.
zUse the unit on a firm, level surface free from vibration.
zKeep the unit away from direct sunlight, strong magnetic fields, excessive dust, hu-
midity and electronic/electrical equipment (home computers, facsimiles, etc.)
which generates electrical noise.
zDo not place anything on top of the unit.
zDo not expose the unit to moisture, to temperatures higher than 60°C (140°F) or to
extremely low temperatures.
zIf your system does not work properly, disconnect the AC power lead from the wall

Connect the wire with the line to the (-) and the transparent one to the (+) .
Caution:
zConnect the speaker wires to the speakers first, then to the unit.
zUse speakers with an impedance of 4 ohms or more, as lower impedance speak-
ers can damage the unit.

„Aerial connection
Notes:
zPlacing the aerial on the unit or near the AC power lead may cause noise pickup.
Place the aerial away from the unit for better reception.
zWhen static is still heard even after adjusting the position of the AM loop aerial, try
reversing the wire connections.
Installing the AM loop aerial:
External FM or AM aerial:
Use an external FM or AM aerial if you require better reception. Consult your dealer.
Note:
When using an external AM aerial, be sure to keep the wire of the AM loop aerial
connected.
„Connecting the AC power lead
After checking all the connections have been made correctly, connect the AC power
lead to the AC power input socket, then plug the AC power lead of this unit into the
wall socket.
Notes:
zUnplug the unit if it is not to be used for a prolonged period of time.
zNever use a power lead other than the one supplied. Otherwise, a malfunction or
an accident may occur.
„To turn the power on
Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.
To set the unit to stand-by mode:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button again.
Note:
When turning on the power right after it is set to the stand-by mode, wait a few sec-
onds.
„To change the display brightness (2 levels)
Supplied FM aerial:
Connect the FM aerial wire to the FM 75 OHMS socket
and position the FM aerial wire in the direction where the
strongest signal can be received.
Supplied AM loop aerial:
Connect the AM loop aerial wire to the AM and GND ter-
minals. Position the AM loop aerial for optimum recep-
tion. Place the AM loop aerial on a shelf, etc., or attach it
to a stand or a wall with screws (not supplied).

„Battery installation
1Remove the battery cover.
2Insert the supplied batteries according to the direction indicated in
the battery compartment.
3Replace the cover.
Precautions for battery use:
zReplace all old batteries with new ones at the same time.
zDo not mix old and new batteries.
zRemove the batteries if the unit is not to be used for long periods of time. This will
prevent potential damage due to battery leakage.
Caution:
zDo not use rechargeable batteries (nickel-cadmium battery, etc.).
zInstalling the batteries incorrectly may cause the unit to malfunction.
Notes concerning use:
zReplace the batteries if the operating distance is reduced or if the operation
becomes erratic. Purchase 2 "AAA" size batteries (UM-4, R03, HP-16 or similar).
zPeriodically clean the transmitter on the remote control and the sensor on the unit
with a soft cloth.
zExposing the sensor on the unit to strong light may interfere with operation.
Change the lighting or the direction of the unit.
zKeep the remote control away from moisture, heat, shock, and vibrations.
„Test of the remote control
Check the remote control after verifying all connections have been made correctly.
(See pages 6 - 7.)
Point the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the unit.
The remote control can be used within the range shown below:

Setting the clock
In this example, the clock is set for the 24-hour (0:00) display.
[When the power is on]
Press the TIMER button.
Within 10 seconds, press the CURSOR ( or ) button to display the time.
The time display will appear for about 10 seconds.
To readjust the clock:
Perform "Setting the clock" from the beginning.
When the current time is displayed instead of "TIME ADJUST" in step 3, step 4 (for
selecting the 24-hour or 12-hour display) will be skipped.
To change the 24-hour or 12-hour display:

The clock setting will be cleared when the unit is unplugged or the power failure lasts
for 30 seconds or more.
1Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.

time display will disappear after a few seconds.
To confirm the time display:

The time display will appear for about 5 seconds.

„Volume control
Press the VOLUME ( or ) button to increase or decrease the volume.
„Bass control
When the power is first turned on, the unit will enter the extra bass mode which
emphasises the bass frequencies. To cancel the extra bass mode, press the X-BASS
button.
„Surround
Press the SURROUND button to allow you to enjoy music that seems to surround
you. "SURROUND" will appear.
To cancel the surround mode, press the SURROUND button again.
„Equaliser
Press the PRE-EQ button repeatedly until the desired sound mode appears.
Note:
If the SURROUND button is pressed during the "HEAVY", "VOCAL" or "SOFT" mode,
the unit is switched to the "FLAT" mode automatically. When the PRE-EQ button is
pressed whilst in the surround mode, the surround setting will be cancelled.
Bass is emphasised. Cancelled.
SURROUND indicator "SURROUND" will go out.

This system can also play audio CD-R and CD-RW discs, but cannot record.
Some audio CD-R and CD-RW discs may not be playable due to the state of disc or
the device that was used for recording. 1Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.

zThe shutter of the insertion slot is opened.
zThe shutter will be automatically closed after 2 minutes.
3Load a CD into the slot.
zFace the label side towards you.
zLoad an 8 cm (3") CD gently in the middle of the insertion slot (do not use an
adaptor).

zThe CD is loaded and the shutter will
be automatically closed.
5Press the button to start playback.
zThe "CD" mode is automatically activated. (When another mode is selected,
pressing the button engages the "CD" mode.)
zWhen the last track has finished playing, the CD player will stop automatically.

Notes:
zSubjecting the unit to shock or vibration may cause mistracking.
zPlaying certain CD at a high volume may cause mistracking. In this case, lis-
ten at a lower volume.
zIf the recorded side of the CD is touched or becomes dirty, refer to "Care of com-
pact discs" (page 2) and clean it.
zIf a disc is damaged or dirty, the sound may skip.
zIf an error message is displayed during CD operation, see "Error messages" on
page 27.
zIf TV or radio interference occurs during CD operation, move the unit away from
the TV or radio.
„To remove the CD
Caution:
zDo not insert or remove the CD whilst the shutter is opening or closing. Be
careful not to damage the CD when inserting or removing it.
zThe CD insertion slot faces upward. Be careful not to drop coins, etc. into it.
If the unit is not used for a long time, dust may accumulate on the insertion
slot. Clean it with a cotton swab (see page 27).
zDo not play discs with special shapes (heart- or octagon-shaped). It may cause
malfunctions.
zDo not insert 2 or more CDs at the same time.
zIf a special-shaped disc, or two or more discs are accidentaly inserted, the CD
cannot be ejected with the button. In this case, reset the unit (see page 27) to
remove the CD.

1Whilst in the stop mode, press the button.
zRemove the half-ejected CD.
zIf the CD is left half-ejected for approx. 2 minutes, the CD will be loaded and the
shutter will be closed automatically.

zNormal playback will resume when the or button is released.
zWhen the end of the last track is reached during fast forward, "END" will appear on
the display and CD operation will be paused. When the beginning of the first track
is reached during fast reverse, the unit will enter the playback mode.
To search very quickly:
When fast forward or fast reverse is used whilst in the pause mode, the playback
point will move more quickly than when using audible fast forward or audible fast
reverse playback.
zIn this mode, no sound is heard. Therefore, you should refer to the time display.
zWhen you lift your finger, the unit will re-enter the pause mode.
„Switching the time display
Each time the TIME button on the remote control is pressed during stop, the display
will change.
Each time the TIME button on the remote control is pressed during playback, the dis-
play will change.
Notes:
zDuring random play, the total remaining playing time will not be displayed.
zDepending on the CD, the playing time display may not match the total playing
time which is indicated on the CD jacket, as the time between tracks is not
included.
To move to the beginning of the next track:
Press the button for less than 0.5 seconds during playback.
zYou can skip to any track by pressing the button repeatedly until the desired
track number appears.
To restart the track being played:
Press the button for less than 0.5 seconds during playback.
zYou can skip to any track by pressing the button repeatedly until the desired
track number appears.
For audible fast forward:
Press and hold down the button during playback.
For audible fast reverse:
Press and hold down the button during playback.
Playing time of a selected track

By using the direct buttons, the desired tracks can be played.
Notes:
zIf you consecutively press the direct buttons, press them within 5 seconds.
zA track number higher than the number of tracks on the disc cannot be selected.
zYou cannot select a track with the direct buttons whilst in random or programme
play.
Repeat or random play
You can select one of the CD playback mode; "Repeat play", "Random play" and
"Normal play".
To repeat a programmed sequence:
Perform steps 1 - 5 in the "Programmed Play" section and then select the repeat play-
back.
Notes:
zDuring programme operation, random play is not possible.
zAfter using repeat play, be sure to press the button. Otherwise, the disc(s) will
play continuously.
zThe random play will stop automatically when all tracks are played once. (The
same track will not be played back twice.)
zIn random play, the CD player will select and play tracks automatically. (You cannot
select the order of the tracks.)
To cancel repeat or random play:
Press the PLAY MODE button repeatedly to select the normal play mode.
Press the direct buttons to select the desired track.
zThe direct buttons allow you to select up to number 10.
zPlayback of the selected track is started.
To select a track between the 11th and 99th tracks:
Select the track after pressing the " 10" button.
For example, to choose 28
1 Press the " 10" button.
2 Press the "2" button.
3 Press the "8" button.

Programmed play
You can choose up to 20 selections for playback in the order you like.
To clear the programmed selections:
Press the CLEAR button whilst the "PROGRAM" indicator is flashing.
zEach time the button is pressed, one track will be cleared, beginning with the last
track programmed.
To cancel the programmed play mode:
Whilst in the stop mode and the "PROGRAM" indicator is lit, press the CLEAR button
on the remote control. The "PROGRAM" indicator will disappear and all the pro-
grammed contents will be cleared.
Adding tracks to the programme:
If a programme has been previously stored, the "PROGRAM" indicator will be dis-
played.
Then follow steps 1 - 5 to add tracks. The new tracks will be stored after the last track
of the original programme.
To check which tracks are programmed:
Whilst the unit is stopped in the programmed play mode, press the or button.
Each time the button is pressed, track numbers will be displayed in order.
Notes:
zEjecting a CD automatically cancels the programmed sequence.
zEven if you press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the stand-by mode or the
function is changed from CD to some other, the programmed selections will not be
cleared.
zDuring programme operation, random play is not possible.
1Whilst in the stop mode, press the button.
2Press the PROGRAM button to enter the programming save mode.
3Press the direct buttons to select the desired track.

zYou can programme the track by pressing the PROGRAM button after selecting
