using the SIMATIC Ident CB Gate. The documentation is aimed at installation engineers,
commissioning engineers, configuring engineers and operators who install, commission,

identification systems.

Decommissioning
Decommission the device properly to prevent unauthorized persons from accessing
confidential data in the device memory.
To do this, reset the device to the factory settings.
Recycling and disposal
The products are low in harmful substances, can be recycled and meet the requirements of
the Directive 2012/19/EU for disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
Do not dispose of the products at public disposal sites.
For environmentally compliant recycling and disposal of your electronic waste, please contact
a company certified for the disposal of electronic waste or your Siemens representative.

2.1 Security recommendations
To prevent unauthorized access, observe the following security recommendations when
working with the CB Gate.
General
•Check regularly that the devices comply with these recommendations and/or other
internal security policies.
•Evaluate your plant as a whole in terms of security. Use a cell protection concept with
suitable products.
•Do not connect the devices directly to the Internet. Operate the devices within a protected
network area.
Physical access
•Restrict physical access to the device.
•Make sure that only adequately qualified personnel have access to the device.
•Lock unused physical ports (e.g. Ethernet ports) on the device. Unused ports can be used
to access the system without authorization.
•The devices have "Low-level service access" that can only be enabled via additional
hardware interconnection. The access is used to enable Siemens personnel to perform
advanced examination for servicing. The access may only be used by qualified service
personnel. Any other use results in the loss of the warranty.
Software (security functions)
•Keep the software up to date. Keep yourself informed regularly about safety updates for
the product.

•Only enable protocols that you actually need to use the device. Note that, in the factory
setting, all protocols can be used. However, while the device has established a connection
via a protocol, all other protocols are disabled.
•Limit access to the device using an external device through a firewall or rules in an access
control list (ACL). The firewall and access list can only be configured via an external
device.

•The configuration files of the reader are available in XML format for simple use. Make sure
that the configuration files outside the device are suitably protected. You can, for
example, encrypt the files, store them at a safe location and transfer them only via secure
communications channels.
•The reader provides options for backing up and restoring the configuration. For security
reasons, neither the IP address of the network interface nor data of the local user
administration are backed up. We recommend that you use the network management
system "SINEC NMS" to manage this data.
Passwords
•Always use the user management of the reader and create new user profiles.
•Change all default passwords for users before operating the device.
•Only use passwords with high password strength. Avoid weak passwords, e.g. password1,
123456789, abcdefgh.
•Define rules for using devices and assigning passwords.
•Make sure that all passwords are protected and inaccessible to unauthorized personnel.
•Do not use the same password for different users and systems.
•Update passwords and keys regularly to improve security.
Keys and certificates
This section deals with the security keys and certificates that you need to set up SSL for the
reader.
•We urgently recommend creating your own SSL certificates and making them available.
Preset certificates and keys are present in the reader.
The preset and automatically created SSL certificates are self-signed. We recommend
using certificates signed either by a reliable external certification authority or an internal
certification authority.
The reader has an interface via which you can import certificates and keys.
•We recommend that you use certificates with a key length of at least 4096 bits.
•If protocols support both certificates and keys, you should favor certificates.
•With operation via OPC UA, always use the "Sign and encrypt" security method.

Secure/non-secure protocols
•Check whether it is necessary to use SNMPv1. SNMPv1 is classified as non-secure. Make
use of the possibility to prevent write access. The product offers corresponding settings
for this.
•If SNMP is enabled, change the community names. If no unrestricted access is necessary,
restrict access over SNMP.
•Use only secure protocols when access to the device is not secured by physical protection
measures.
The following protocols provide secure alternatives:
HTTP → HTTPS
•To prevent unauthorized access to the device or network, set up appropriate safeguards
against non-secure protocols.
•Enable only the services (protocols) that will actually be used on the device. The same
applies to the installed interfaces/ports. Unused ports could be used to access the network
downstream from the device.
•When using OPC UA, only use profiles with secure encryption and authentication.

The SIMATIC Ident CB Gate is not designed for operation in hazardous areas and,
correspondingly, is not permitted to be operated in hazardous areas.

Life-threatening voltages when control cabinet is open
When you open the control cabinet, there may be a dangerous voltage at certain areas or
components. Contact with these areas or components may lead to death through electric
shock.
Disconnect the cabinet from the mains before opening it.
Do not plug in or pull out plant components during operation.

The SIMATIC Ident CB Gate may only be connected and repaired by qualified personnel,
taking into account the documentation belonging to it.

Security recommendation: Authentication
Note that the controller, the reader and the Panel are password-protected in the factory
state. The password for the user "admin" is "CB_Gate2022!".
To ensure that no unauthorized persons can access the device settings, we recommend that
you leave authentication enabled, change existing passwords and create new user profiles.

When electrical devices are operated, certain parts necessarily conduct dangerous voltages.
Therefore, improper handling of the devices can lead to death or severe injury as well as
significant property damage.
Only appropriately qualified personnel may work on or in the vicinity of this device.
This device can only function correctly and safely if it is transported, stored, set up and
installed correctly.
Before installation or maintenance work is started, the main switch of the system must be
switched off and secured against being switched on again.
If this instruction is not followed, touching live parts can result in death or serious injury.
2.4.2 Safety instructions relating to the controller
WARNING
If you install or remove the S7-1200 or devices connected to it while in switched-on
state, you may suffer an electric shock or the devices may operate unexpectedly.
Take all necessary safety precautions and make certain that the power supply to the S7-
1200 CPUs is switched off before installing or removing a device.

Do not disconnect any devices if a flammable or combustible atmosphere is present.
Disconnecting devices in a flammable or combustible atmosphere can cause a fire or
explosion which could result in death, serious injury and/or property damage.

Area of application
The SIMATIC Ident CB Gate is a multi-component system which was designed specifically for
the detection, identification and tracking of the objects tagged with transponders in conveyor
systems. The system is based on components of the SIMATIC RF600 product family. It is an
identification system in the UHF range which enables identification of passive transponders
over large distances.
The CB Gate is available in three versions:
•With one read point and two antennas (top) for simple coverage
•With one read point and four antennas (top and bottom) for two-sided coverage
•With two read points and four antennas (top and bottom) for two-sided coverage
The Gate allows detection of all objects equipped with a UHF transponder which supports the
communication protocols ISO 18000-62, ISO 18000-63.

Method of operation
The CB Gate is built around a conveyor system (e.g. conveyor belt). As soon as an object
passes the light barrier, the read operation starts. Read operations are performed as long as
the light barrier is interrupted. The read result is output via the connected Panel and possibly
to a higher-level system, depending on the settings.
