important,sinceyoumay-inworstcase-runthetransducerintothebottom.Thiswill
damagethetransducerandthetransducershaft,andextensiverepairisrequired.

Whenyouaredockingyourvessel
ItisveryimportantthattheSU90systemremainsswitchedoffwhenthevesselisindry
dock.Ifthetransducerisactivatedwhenoutofwateritmaybedamagedbeyondrepair.

TheSU90allows
youtochoosean
operationalfrequency
between20to30kHz
(in1kHzsteps).The
cylindricalmulti-element
transducerallows
theomnidirectional
sonarbeamstobetiltedelectronicallyfrom+10to–60degrees.Thisallowsyouto
automaticallytrackschoolsofsh,andtoobservethewholewatervolumearoundthe
vessel.Astabilizingsystemisincludedforelectronicpitchandrollcompensation.
ComparedtotheSimradSX90,thenumberofchannelsisincreasedby50%givingthe
sonaranevenbetterperformanceinselectivityandrange.
Thenarrowopeningangle(4,9degreesat30kHz)andtheincreasedsourcelevel(3dB)
makestheSU90averypowerfulandhighresolutionlowfrequencysonar.Thenarrow
beammakestheSU90evenmoreidealforsearchingshclosetothebottomorcloseto
thesurfaceatlongranges.Italsoprovidesafarbetterverticalviewwithless“bottom
climbing”thatisseenonsonarswithawiderbeam.

highresolutioncolourdisplay.
TheSU90isequippedwithSimrad’scelebratedsignalprocessingsoftware.Itincludes
HyperbolicFMtransmissions(alsoknowas“Chirp”)toensureaclutterfreepicture
withveryhighresolutioninrange.
Thesignalprocessingandbeamformingisperformedinafastdigitalsignalprocessing
systemusingthefulldynamicrangeofthesignals.Inadditiontothetraditionalsingle
frequencytransceiversystem,theSimradSU90containsanadvancedfrequency
modulatedltersystem(FM).
TheSU90ProcessorUnitiscontrolledbyMicrosoft’sWindows®operatingsystem,
whichresultinaexiblechoiceofpresentationmodesforalargerangeofuser
applications.

Thecomputerisbasedonacommercialdesign,but
thesoftwareandhardwarehasbeenspeciedand
assembledspecicallyforSimradtosuittheSU90requirements.
ThecomputerholdsmultipleUSBportsforusewithfuturesoftwareupgrades.These
USBportswillalsoallowyoutoexportscreencapturesfromthesonar.
OperatingPanel
TheOperatingPanelcontainsallnecessarycontrol
functionsfornormaloperationoftheSU90.
Thecontrolsarearrangedinlogicalfunctiongroups,
thisgivesaclearandeasyoperation.
ThemajorityoftheSU90functionscanbeaccessed
usingthetrackballontheOperatingPanelandthemenusystemonthedisplay.You
canalsouseastandardcomputermouse.

Asmallcommercialpowersupplyisimplementedtoprovidestand-bypowertothe
OperatingPanel.ThepowersupplyisconnectedtotheProcessorUnit.
Audioamplierwithloudspeakers
AnamplierwithoneortwoloudspeakersmaybeconnectedtotheProcessorUnitto
providetheaudiooutput.
Theseoptionalitemsarenotprovidedwiththestandardsonardelivery.
IfstandardcommercialPCloudspeakersareused,thesearenormallypoweredbya
separatepowersupply.
TransceiverUnit
TheSU90TransceiverUnitislocatedinthesonar
room,closetotheHullUnit.
Thetransceiverperformsthetransmissionand
receptioncontrolofthe384transmittersand384
receiverchannels.12identicaltransceiverboards
areused.TheTransceiverUnitalsoholdstwopower
supplies,anEthernetswitch,andalargecapacitorbank.
TwoEthernetcablesareusedforcommunicationwith
theProcessorUnitonthebridge,whileathirdEthernet
cableisusedtocontrolthehullunit.
Thetransducercablesfromthehullunitareplugged
intothesidewalloftheTransceiverUnitcabinetusingaspecialplug.
TheTransceiverUnitismountedonthebulkheadusingpowerfulshockabsorbers.The
connectorsforpowerandinterfacearelocatedatthebottomofthecabinet.
HullUnit
ThestandardSU92HullUnitisdesignedtolowerthetransducer1.2metersbelowthe
ship’shull.Maximumvesselspeedisthen21knotswhenthetransducerisfullylowered.
TheoptionalSU93HullUnitwilllowerthetransducerto1,6metersbelowthehull.
WiththeSU93HullUnit,themaximumvesselspeedis16knotswhenthetransduceris
fullylowered.
Whenthesonarisswitchedon,presstheDownbuttonontheOperatingPaneltolower
