Narrow sound beams
Unlikeothersonars,theSX90both
transmitsandreceiveswithnarrow
beams.Narrowbeamsareimportant
inordertoavoidfalseunwanted
echoesfrombottomandsurface,this
limitsthedetectionrange.At30kHz
thetransmitbeamisonly6.7°wide.

Selectable beam width

ThisisanotheruniqueSimrad
feature.TheSX90sonartransmits
alongpulsewithacontinuously
variablefrequency.Thereceiver
listensforanechowiththesame
frequencyvariations.Echoeswith
differentfrequencysignaturesare
vastlyreduced.Theactualshechoes
areenhanced,andshdetectionis
madeeasierunderdifcultconditions.

Large dynamic range
Pickingtherightschoolis
important.Dynamicrangemeansthat
youcantellthedifferencebetweena
scatteredschoolprovidingaweaker
echo,andadenseschoolgivinga
strongerecho.Lookingatthebottom
echo,youcaneasilytellsmoothfrom
roughbottom.Thisisimportantwhen
purseseininginshallowwater,and
duringpelagictrawlingwherethe
footropecantouchthebottom.
Stabilized beams

sonarbeamsenhanceshdetectionin
poorweathermakingsearchingstill

Noise lter
Thenoiselterwillsuppress
propellernoise,interferencefrom
otheracousticsystemsonyourown
vesseloronothervesselsnearby.
