TheSimradES38-7isawidebandsplitbeamtransducerdesignedforsheryandunderwater
scienceapplications.Thebeamwidthis7degreesatnominaloperationalfrequency38
kHz.TheES38-7isdesignedwithfourseparatesectors,andincludesasensortomeasure
theseatemperature.
Toreadthetemperature,therelevanthardware
andsoftwareresourcesmustbeavailablein
theechosoundersystem.
Thetransducerisnormallymountedush
withthehullplatingorthebottomofablister.
Itisprovidedwithaninstallationange,and
bymeansofaclampingringitissecuredto
amountingringweldedintothehullplating
orthebottomofablister.Theclampingring
isprovidedwiththetransducer,andalready
tted.
Thetransducercanalsobeushmountedat
thebottomofadropkeel.
Thetransducercablepenetratesthehullusingacableglandwhichconsistsofbushing,
washer,rubbergasketandpackingnipple.
Note
TheES38-7isoftenusedasareplacementforthediscontinuedES38B.Ifyoudothat,
makesurethatthehorizontalsupportbarusedontheES38Bisremovedbeforeyoumount
theES38-7.

Atransducermustalwaysbehandledasadelicateinstrument.Incorrectactionsmaydamage
thetransducerbeyondrepair.Observethesetransducerhandlingrules:

2Donothandlethetransducerroughlyandavoidimpacts.

Transportprotection
Sometransducersaredeliveredwithacoverplatetoprotectthefaceduringtransportand
installation.Letthisplatestayonaslongaspossible,butdonotforgettoremoveitbefore
thevesselgoestosea.
Cleaningandpaintingthetransducerface
Duringnormaluse,thetransducerissubjectedtobiologicalfouling.Ifthismarinegrowth
isexcessive,itwillreducetheperformanceoftheES38-7.
Thetransducerhasnotbeendesignedwithanyprotectionagainstbiologicalfouling.
Wheneveropportunityarise,typicallywhenthevesselisdry-docked,thetransducerface
mustbecleanedforshellsandothermarinegrowth.
•Becarefulsothatyoudonotaccidentallymakecutsorinictotherphysicaldamageto
thetransducerface.
•Removebiologicalfoulingcarefullyusingaplasticbrush,asuitablesyntheticdetergent
andfreshwater.Biologicalmaterialwhichisstronglyrootedinthesubstratecanbe
removedcarefullywithapieceofwoodorplastic.
•Donotusehigh-pressurewater,sandblasting,metaltoolsorstrongsolventstoclean
thetransducer.
Anti-foulingpaintmaybeappliedtothetransducerface.Tominimizethenegative
acousticaleffectsthelayerofanti-foulingpaintmustbeasthinaspossible.

Theanti-foulingpaintwillreducetheacousticalperformanceofthetransducer.The
surfaceroughnessofthetransducersubstrateandthethicknessofthepaintmayalso
inuencetheperformance.KongsbergMaritimecannotbeheldresponsibleforanynegative

Marinegrowth(biologicalfouling)onthetransducerfacereducestheES38-7performance.
Forthisreason,itisimportanttokeepthetransducerfaceclean.Everytimeyourvessel
isindrydock,youmustremovethemarinegrowth.Atthesametime,youmustinspect
thetransducercloselyforphysicaldamage.
Prerequisites
Thefollowingtoolsandconsumablesarerequired.
•Personalprotection
•Freshwater
•Amildsyntheticdetergentandaplasticbrush
•Apieceofwoodorplasticwithoutsharpcorners
•Citricacid(<50%)(onlyifrequired)
Context
Duringnormaluse,thetransducerissubjectedtobiologicalfouling.Ifthismarinegrowth
isexcessive,itwillreducetheperformanceoftheES38-7.Wheneveropportunityarise,
typicallywhenthevesselisdry-docked,thetransducerfacemustbecleanedforshells
andothermarinegrowth.
Itisimportanttocheckthetransducerforphysicaldamage.Anycracks,fracturesorholes
intheredprotectivecoatingmayresultinawaterleak,andaleakmaycauseirreparable
damagetothetransducer.
Atransducermustalwaysbehandledasadelicateinstrument.Incorrectactionsmaydamage
thetransducerbeyondrepair.Observethesetransducerhandlingrules:
•Donotactivatethetransducerwhenitisoutofthewater.
•Donothandlethetransducerroughlyandavoidimpacts.
•Donotexposethetransducertodirectsunlightorexcessiveheat.

Procedure
1Allowforsufcientaccesstocleanandinspecttheentiresurfaceofthetransducer.
2Removebiologicalfoulingcarefullyusingaplasticbrush,asuitablesyntheticdetergent
andfreshwater.
Biologicalmaterialwhichisstronglyrootedinthesubstratecanberemovedcarefully
withapieceofwoodorplastic.Ifrequired,youcanalsousecitricacid.Apply,leaveit
workingforseveralhours,andrinsethoroughlywithfreshwater.
Note
Donotusehigh-pressurewater ,sandblasting,metaltoolsorstrongsolventstoclean
thetransducerface.Donotdamagetheouterprotectiveskinofthetransducerface.
3Allowthetransducersurfacetodry.
4Doathoroughvisualinspectionofthetransducer.Checkfordents,scratches,holes
orotherdamagetothesurface.
Ifyoususpectdamage,takeahighresolutionphoto.ContactyourdealerortheSimrad
supportorganizationforadvice.
5Ifnecessary,applyanti-foulingpaintasdescribedinthededicatedprocedure.
Note
Becausesomepainttypesmaybeaggressivetothepolyurethaneinthetransducer,
consultourlistofapprovedpaints.
