1. Introduction
TheSKFTIH030minductionheaterisdesignedtoheatbearingsthataremountedwith
aninterferencetontoashaft.Theheatcausesthebearingtoexpand,whicheliminates
theneedtouseforceduringinstallation.A90°C(162°F)temperaturedifference
betweenthebearingandshaftisgenerallysufcienttoenableinstallation.Atanambient
temperatureof20°C(68°F),thebearingmustthereforebeheatedto110°C(230°F).
1.1 Intended use
TheTIH030mhasbeendesignedtoheatrollingbearings.However,other
metalworkpiecesthatformaclosedcircuitcanalsobeheated.Examplesofacceptable
workpiecesincludebushings,shrinkrings,pulleys,andgears.Allbearingsthattoverthe
inductivecoilandbetweentheverticalsupportswiththetopyokeinplacecanbeheated
usingtheTIH030m.Inaddition,smallerbearingscanbeplacedoveranyofthethree
standardyokes.Seetheillustrationsatthebeginningofthismanualforexamples.
1.2 Principle of operation
TheTIH030mgeneratesheatbymeansofalarge
electricalcurrentthatismagneticallyinducedinthe
workpiecebyacoilwithintheheater.
Thehighvoltage,lowcurrentelectricityowing
throughthelargenumberofwindingsinthe
inductivecoilinduceslowvoltage,highcurrent
electricityintheworkpiece.Becausetheworkpiece
hastheelectricalcharacteristicsofacoilwitha
single,short-circuitedwinding,thehighcurrent
generatesheatwithintheworkpiece.
Becausetheheatisgeneratedwithintheworkpiece,
alloftheheatercomponentsremaincool.

1.3 Distinguishing features
• Remotecontrolpanel
Toimprovetheeaseofuseandtodiminishtheriskofcontactwiththehot
bearingduringoperation,theTIH030mheaterissuppliedwitharemotecontrol
panelwhichcanbedetachedfromtheheater.
• Inductivecoil
Whenheatedtheworkpieceislocatedatthesamepositiononthecoreasthe
inductivecoil.Thisdesignimprovesefciency,resultinginlesspowerconsumption
andfasterheating,whichreducethecosttoheateachbearing.
• Foldingbearingsupports
TosupportlargebearingpositionedaroundtheinductivecoiltheTIH030m
inductionheateristtedwithfoldingbearingsupports.Seetheillustrationsatthe
beginningofthismanual.
• Yokestorage
Allthreeyokescanbestoredinsidetheheater.Twoyokestoragearelocated
behindthefoldingbearingsupports.Storageofthesmallandmediumyokesis
intheyokestorageattheheatercircuitbreakerside.
Storageofthelargeyokeisintheyokestorageattheheatermainscableside.

2. Description
Theoperationoftheheateriscontrolledbytheinternalelectronicsineitheroftwo
modes.Theoperatorcaneitherselectthedesiredtemperatureofthebearingin
TEMPMODEorsetthelengthoftimethatthebearingwillbeheatedinTIMEMODE.
Thepowerlevelcanbeadjustedto100%or50%forslowerheatingofsensitive
workpieces(forexample,bearingswithC1orC2clearance).
2.1 Components
TheTIH030minductionheatercontainsaU-shapedironcorewithaninductivecoil
surroundingoneoftheverticalsupports.Adetachableremotecontrolpanelisincluded.
Theremotecontrolelectronicsandtheinternalelectronicscontroltheoperationofthe
heater.Aremovableyokeonthetopoftheverticalsupportsallowstheworkpiecetobe
placedontotheheater.Toaccommodatesmallerworkpieces,twosmalleryokesarealso
provided.Atemperatureprobeisalsoincludedwiththeheater.Heat-resistantglovesare
alsoincluded.

3. Installation of mains plug
Aqualiedelectricianmustinstallasuitablemainsplug.Thecorrectsupplyvoltageis
showninsection2.2.
Thewiresshouldbeconnectedasfollows:

Verifythatthecorrectfuseisinstalled.Seesection2.2forfuseratingspecications.
4. Preparation for use
• PlacetheTIH030minthehorizontalpositiononastablesurface.
• Connectthemainsplugtoasuitablemainssupply.
• Plugtheremotecontrolintotheconnectoronthecarryinghandlesideoftheheater.
• Forworkpieceswithaninternaldiameterlargeenoughtotovertheinductivecoil,
followthesesteps:
-Placetheworkpieceovertheinductivecoilusingappropriateliftingequipment.
-Forbestperformance,adjustthepositionoftheworkpiecesothatthe
inductivecoilisinthecentre.
-Positionthelargestyokesothatitcompletelycoversthetopofbothvertical
supports.
• Forworkpiecesthatdonottovertheinductivecoil,followthesesteps:
-Choosethelargestofthethreeyokesthattthroughtheinternaldiameter
oftheworkpiece.
-Ifnecessary,removethetopyokefromtheTIH030m.
-Slidetheworkpieceontotheyokethatyouhaveselected.
-PositiontheyokeontheTIH030mwiththebrightundersiderestingevenly
onthetwoverticalsupports.
• IfyouwilluseTEMPMODE,plugthetemperatureprobeintotheconnectoronthe
carryinghandlesideoftheheater.Placethemagneticendoftheprobeontheinner
ringofthebearingorontheinnermostsurfaceoftheworkpiece.
• SwitchontheTIH030m.
• Observetheself-testoftheremotecontroldisplayandsignaltone.

• Itmaybedesirabletoheatbearingstotemperaturesabove110°C(230°F)for
increasedmountingtime.ConsulttheSKFbearingspecicationstodeterminethe
maximumpermittedtemperature.Alwaysensurethebearingdoesnotlockdueto
anexcessiveexpansionoftheinnerringcomparedtoouterring.Seesection5.8.
• IfneededpressPOWERtoselectthepowerlevel.Usetheguidelinesinsection5.8to
determinethecorrectpowersetting.
• Makesurethetemperatureprobeismountedonthebearinginnerring.
• PressSTART/STOPtostarttheheater.Theremotecontroldisplayshowsthecurrent

START/STOPispressed.

• Removetheworkpiecewithproperhandlingequipment.
• Iftheworkpieceremainsontheheater,theheaterwillstartagainwhenthe
temperatureoftheworkpiecedrops10°C(18°F).PressSTART/STOPtostopthe
heateranddemagnetisetheworkpiece.
• TheTIH030misnowreadytoheatanotherworkpiecewiththesamesettings.
5.4 Time mode
• Iftheremotecontroldisplayshows°Cor°F,pressMODEtoselectTIMEMODE.

andgeneratesanacousticsignalfor10seconds.
• PressSTART/STOPtocanceltheacousticsignalandstoptheheater.
• Removetheworkpiecewithproperhandlingequipment.
• TheTIH030misnowreadytoheatanotherworkpiecewiththesamesettings.
5.5 Temperature measurement
Whentheheaterisnotoperating,thetemperatureoftheworkpiececanbemeasuredby
pressingMODEandSTART/STOPatthesametime.
TheLEDontheSTART/STOPbuttonashesduringtemperaturemeasurement.
PressSTART/STOPtocanceltemperaturemeasurement.
5.6 Change of temperature unit
PressMODEandUPatthesametimetoswitchbetween°Cand°F.
Thetemperatureunitsettingremainsthesameevenafterdisconnectionfrom
mainspower.

5.7 Demagnetisation
Theworkpieceisautomaticallydemagnetisedwhenheatingiscomplete.
Demagnetisationwillnotoccurifthepowerisinterruptedorthemainswitchisswitched
off.TousetheTIH030mfordemagnetisationonly,selectTIMEMODEandsetthetimeto
0.1minute(6seconds).
5.8 Power level selection
Whenheatingbearingswithaninductionheater,mostoftheheatwillbegeneratedinthe
innerbearingrace.Theheatwillthenbetransferredthroughthebearing.Itistherefore
importantthatbearingswithsmallinternalclearanceorslightpreloadareheatedslowly.
Slowheatingensuresthatthebearingexpandsevenly,therebypreventingdamagetothe
bearing.
Theshape,weight,size,andinternalclearancesallaffecttheamountoftimerequiredto
heatabearing.Thelargevarietyofbearingtypesprecludesthepossibilityofprovidinga
specicpowerlevelsettingforeachtype.Instead,thefollowingguidelinesareprovided:
• Forsensitivebearings(includingbearingswithC1orC2internalclearance)or
bearingswithbrasscages,donotexceed50%power.
• Whenusingthesmallyoke,neverexceed50%power.

6. Safety features
TheTIH030misequippedwiththefollowingsafetyfeatures:

• Over-currentcircuitbreaker.
• IntheTEMPMODEtheheaterwillswitchoffifthetemperatureprobedoesnot
registeratemperatureincreaseof1°C(1.8°F)every15seconds(0.25minute).
Toincreasetheintervalto30seconds(0.50minute),pressMODEandDOWNatthe
sametime.
7. Troubleshooting
