1.1 Validity

2 Safety
2.1 Intended Use
The SunnyBoy is a transformerless PV inverter with two MPP trackers which converts the direct
current of the PV array to grid-compliant alternating current and feeds it into the utility grid.
The product is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
The product must only be operated with PV modules of protection class II in accordance with
IEC61730, application class A. The PV modules must be compatible with this product.
The product is not equipped with an integrated transformer and therefore has no galvanic isolation.
The product must not be operated with PV modules whose outputs are grounded. This can cause
the product to be destroyed. The product may be operated with PV modules whose frame is
grounded.
PV modules with a high capacity to ground must only be used if their coupling capacity does not
exceed 1.4μF (for information on how to determine the coupling capacity, see the Technical
Information "Leading Leakage Currents" at www.SMA-Solar.com).
All components must remain within their permitted operating ranges and their installation
requirements at all times.
The product must only be used in countries for which it is approved or released by SMA Solar
Technology AG and the grid operator.
Use SMA products only in accordance with the information provided in the enclosed
documentation and with the locally applicable laws, regulations, standards and directives. Any
other application may cause personal injury or property damage.
Alterations to the SMA products, e.g., changes or modifications, are only permitted with the express
written permission of SMA Solar Technology AG. Unauthorized alterations will void guarantee and
warranty claims and in most cases terminate the operating license. SMA Solar Technology AG
shall not be held liable for any damage caused by such changes.

The type label must remain permanently attached to the product.
2.2 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

This section contains safety information that must be observed at all times when working.
The product has been designed and tested in accordance with international safety requirements. As
with all electrical or electronical devices, there are residual risks despite careful construction. To
prevent personal injury and property damage and to ensure long-term operation of the product,
read this section carefully and observe all safety information at all times.
DANGER
Danger to life due to electric shock when live components or DC cables are
touched
When exposed to light, the PV modules generate high DC voltage which is present in the DC
cables. Touching live DC cables results in death or lethal injuries due to electric shock.
• Do not touch non-insulated parts or cables.
• Disconnect the product from voltage sources and make sure it cannot be reconnected
before working on the device.
• Wear suitable personal protective equipment for all work on the product.
DANGER
Danger to life due to electric shock when live components are touched on
opening the product
High voltages are present in the live parts and cables inside the product during operation.
Touching live parts and cables results in death or lethal injuries due to electric shock.

DANGER
Danger to life due to electric shock when touching live system components in
case of a ground fault
If a ground fault occurs, parts of the system may still be live. Touching live parts and cables
results in death or lethal injuries due to electric shock.
• Disconnect the product from voltage sources and make sure it cannot be reconnected
before working on the device.
• Touch the cables of the PV array on the insulation only.
• Do not touch any parts of the substructure or frame of the PV array.
• Do not connect PV strings with ground faults to the inverter.
DANGER
Danger to life due to electric shock in case of overvoltages and if surge
protection is missing
Overvoltages (e.g. in the event of a flash of lightning) can be further conducted into the building
and to other connected devices in the same network via the network cables or other data cables
if there is no surge protection. Touching live parts and cables results in death or lethal injuries due
to electric shock.
• Ensure that all devices in the same network are integrated in the existing overvoltage
protection.
• When laying the network cable outdoors, ensure that there is suitable surge protection at
the network cable transition from the product outdoors to the network inside the building.
• The Ethernet interface of the inverter is classified as "TNV-1" and offers protection against
overvoltages of up to 1.5kV.
WARNING
Danger to life due to fire or explosion
In rare cases, an explosive gas mixture can be generated inside the inverter under fault
conditions. In this state, switching operations can cause a fire inside the inverter or explosion.
Death or lethal injuries due to hot or flying debris can result.
• In the event of a fault, do not perform any direct actions on the inverter.
• Ensure that unauthorized persons have no access to the inverter.
• Do not operate the DC load-break switch on the inverter in the event of ground fault
• Disconnect the PV array from the inverter via an external disconnection device. If there is no
disconnecting device present, wait until no more DC power is applied to the inverter.
• Disconnect the AC circuit breaker, or keep it disconnected in case it has already tripped,
and secure it against reconnection.
• Only perform work on the inverter (e.g., troubleshooting, repair work) when wearing
personal protective equipment for handling of hazardous substances (e.g., safety gloves,
eye and face protection, respiratory protection).

WARNING
Risk of injury due to toxic substances, gases and dusts.
In rare cases, damages to electronic components can result in the formation of toxic substances,
gases or dusts inside the inverter. Touching toxic substances and inhaling toxic gases and dusts
can cause skin irritation, burns or poisoning, trouble breathing and nausea.
• Only perform work on the inverter (e.g., troubleshooting, repair work) when wearing
personal protective equipment for handling of hazardous substances (e.g., safety gloves,
eye and face protection, respiratory protection).
• Ensure that unauthorized persons have no access to the inverter.
WARNING
Danger to life due to electric shock from destruction of the measuring device
due to overvoltage
Overvoltage can damage a measuring device and result in voltage being present in the
enclosure of the measuring device. Touching the live enclosure of the measuring device results in
death or lethal injuries due to electric shock.
• Only use measuring devices with a DC input voltage range of 600V or higher.
CAUTION
Risk of burns due to hot enclosure parts
Some parts of the enclosure can get hot during operation. Touching hot enclosure parts can
result in burn injuries.
• During operation, do not touch any parts other than the enclosure lid of the inverter.
CAUTION
Risk of injury due to weight of product
Injuries may result if the product is lifted incorrectly or dropped while being transported or
mounted.
• Transport and lift the product carefully. Take the weight of the product into account.
• Wear suitable personal protective equipment for all work on the product.
NOTICE
Damage due to cleaning agents
The use of cleaning agents may cause damage to the product and its components.
• Clean the product and all its components only with a cloth moistened with clear water.

NOTICE
High costs due to inappropriate Internet tariff
Depending on use, the data volume of the product transferred via the Internet may vary in size.
The data volume depends, for example, on the number of inverters in the system, the frequency
of device updates, the frequency of data transfer to SunnyPortal or the use of FTP push. High
costs for the Internet connection can be the result.
• SMA Solar Technology AG recommends using an Internet flat rate.
Change to the names and units of grid parameters to comply with the grid-
connection requirements in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/631
(valid from April 27, 2019)
To comply with the EU grid-connection requirements (valid from April 27, 2019) the names
and units of grid parameters were changed. This change is valid from firmware version
≥3.00.00.R if a country data set for fulfilling the EU grid-connection requirements (valid from
2019-04-27) is set. Names and units of grid parameters for inverters with firmware version
≤2.99.99.R are not affected by this change and remain valid. This also applies from firmware
version ≥3.00.00.R if a country data set that is valid for countries outside the EU is set.

2 Sicherheit
2.1 Bestimmungsgemäße Verwendung
Der Sunny Boy ist ein transformatorloser PV-Wechselrichter mit 2MPP-Trackern, der den
Gleichstrom des PV-Generators in netzkonformen Wechselstrom wandelt und den Wechselstrom in
das öffentliche Stromnetz einspeist.
Das Produkt ist für den Einsatz im Außenbereich und Innenbereich geeignet.
Das Produkt darf nur mit PV-Modulen der SchutzklasseII nach IEC61730, AnwendungsklasseA
betrieben werden. Die verwendeten PV-Module müssen sich für den Einsatz mit diesem Produkt
eignen.
Das Produkt besitzt keinen integrierten Transformator und es verfügt somit nicht über eine
galvanische Trennung. Das Produkt darf nicht mit PV-Modulen betrieben werden, deren Ausgänge
geerdet sind. Dadurch kann das Produkt zerstört werden. Das Produkt darf mit PV-Modulen
betrieben werden, deren Rahmen geerdet ist.
PV-Module mit großer Kapazität gegen Erde dürfen nur eingesetzt werden, wenn deren

Der erlaubte Betriebsbereich und die Installationsanforderungen aller Komponenten müssen
jederzeit eingehalten werden.
Das Produkt darf nur in Ländern eingesetzt werden, für die es zugelassen oder für die es durch
SMA Solar Technology AG und den Netzbetreiber freigegeben ist.
Setzen Sie SMA Produkte ausschließlich nach den Angaben der beigefügten Dokumentationen und
gemäß der vor Ort gültigen Gesetze, Bestimmungen, Vorschriften und Normen ein. Ein anderer
Einsatz kann zu Personen- oder Sachschäden führen.
Eingriffe in SMA Produkte, z. B. Veränderungen und Umbauten, sind nur mit ausdrücklicher
schriftlicher Genehmigung von SMA Solar Technology AG gestattet. Nicht autorisierte Eingriffe
führen zum Wegfall der Garantie- und Gewährleistungsansprüche sowie in der Regel zum
Erlöschen der Betriebserlaubnis. Die Haftung von SMA Solar Technology AG für Schäden aufgrund

Dieses Kapitel beinhaltet Sicherheitshinweise, die bei allen Arbeiten immer beachtet werden
müssen.
Das Produkt wurde gemäß internationaler Sicherheitsanforderungen entworfen und getestet. Trotz
sorgfältiger Konstruktion bestehen, wie bei allen elektrischen oder elektronischen Geräten,
Restrisiken. Um Personen- und Sachschäden zu vermeiden und einen dauerhaften Betrieb des
Produkts zu gewährleisten, lesen Sie dieses Kapitel aufmerksam und befolgen Sie zu jedem
Zeitpunkt alle Sicherheitshinweise.
GEFAHR
Lebensgefahr durch Stromschlag beim Berühren spannungsführender DC-
Kabel
Die PV-Module erzeugen bei Lichteinfall hohe Gleichspannung, die an den DC-Kabeln anliegt.
Das Berühren spannungsführender DC-Kabel führt zum Tod oder zu lebensgefährlichen
Verletzungen durch Stromschlag.
• Keine freiliegenden spannungsführenden Teile oder Kabel berühren.
• Vor Arbeiten das Produkt spannungsfrei schalten und gegen Wiedereinschalten sichern.
• Bei allen Arbeiten am Produkt geeignete persönliche Schutzausrüstung tragen.

GEFAHR
Lebensgefahr durch Stromschlag beim Berühren spannungsführender Teile
bei geöffnetem Produkt
Im Betrieb liegen an den spannungsführenden Teilen und Kabel im Inneren des Produkts hohe
Spannungen an. Das Berühren spannungsführender Teile oder Kabel führt zum Tod oder zu
lebensgefährlichen Verletzungen durch Stromschlag.
• Das Produkt nicht öffnen.
GEFAHR
Lebensgefahr durch Stromschlag beim Berühren unter Spannung stehender
Anlagenteile bei einem Erdschluss
Bei einem Erdschluss können Anlagenteile unter Spannung stehen. Das Berühren
spannungsführender Teile oder Kabel führt zum Tod oder zu lebensgefährlichen Verletzungen
durch Stromschlag.
• Vor Arbeiten das Produkt spannungsfrei schalten und gegen Wiedereinschalten sichern.
• Die Kabel des PV-Generators nur an der Isolierung anfassen.
• Teile der Unterkonstruktion und Gestell des PV-Generators nicht anfassen.
• Keine PV-Strings mit Erdschluss an den Wechselrichter anschließen.
GEFAHR
Lebensgefahr durch Stromschlag bei Überspannungen und fehlendem
Überspannungsschutz
Überspannungen (z.B. im Falle eines Blitzschlags) können durch fehlenden
Überspannungsschutz über die Netzwerkkabel oder andere Datenkabel ins Gebäude und an
andere angeschlossene Geräte im selben Netzwerk weitergeleitet werden. Das Berühren
spannungsführender Teile oder Kabel führt zum Tod oder zu lebensgefährlichen Verletzungen
durch Stromschlag.
• Sicherstellen, dass alle Geräte im selben Netzwerk in den bestehenden
Überspannungsschutz integriert sind.
• Bei Verlegung der Netzwerkkabel im Außenbereich sicherstellen, dass beim Übergang der
Netzwerkkabel vom Produkt im Außenbereich zum Netzwerk im Gebäude ein geeigneter
Überspannungsschutz vorhanden ist.
• Die Ethernet-Schnittstelle des Wechselrichters ist als "TNV-1" klassifiziert und bietet einen
Schutz gegen Überspannungen bis 1,5kV.

WARNUNG
Lebensgefahr durch Feuer und Explosion
In seltenen Einzelfällen kann im Fehlerfall im Inneren des Wechselrichters ein zündfähiges
Gasgemisch entstehen. Durch Schalthandlungen kann in diesem Zustand im Inneren des
Wechselrichters ein Brand entstehen oder eine Explosion ausgelöst werden. Tod oder
lebensgefährliche Verletzungen durch heiße oder wegfliegende Teile können die Folge sein.
• Im Fehlerfall keine direkten Handlungen am Wechselrichter durchführen.
• Sicherstellen, dass Unbefugte keinen Zutritt zum Wechselrichter haben.
• Nicht den DC-Lasttrennschalter am Wechselrichter betätigen.
• Den PV-Generator über eine externe Trennvorrichtung vom Wechselrichter trennen. Wenn
keine Trenneinrichtung vorhanden ist, warten, bis keine DC-Leistung mehr am Wechselrichter
anliegt.
• Den AC-Leitungsschutzschalter ausschalten oder wenn dieser bereits ausgelöst hat,
ausgeschaltet lassen und gegen Wiedereinschalten sichern.
• Arbeiten am Wechselrichter (z. B. Fehlersuche, Reparaturarbeiten) nur mit persönlicher
Schutzausrüstung für den Umgang mit Gefahrstoffen (z.B. Schutzhandschuhe, Augen- und
Gesichtsschutz und Atemschutz) durchführen.
WARNUNG
Verletzungsgefahr durch giftige Substanzen, Gase und Stäube
In seltenen Einzelfällen können, durch Beschädigungen an elektronischen Bauteilen, giftige
Substanzen, Gase und Stäube im Inneren des Wechselrichters entstehen. Das Berühren giftiger
Substanzen sowie das Einatmen giftiger Gase und Stäube kann zu Hautreizungen, Verätzungen,
Atembeschwerden und Übelkeit führen.
• Arbeiten am Wechselrichter (z. B. Fehlersuche, Reparaturarbeiten) nur mit persönlicher
Schutzausrüstung für den Umgang mit Gefahrstoffen (z.B. Schutzhandschuhe, Augen- und
Gesichtsschutz und Atemschutz) durchführen.
• Sicherstellen, dass Unbefugte keinen Zutritt zum Wechselrichter haben.
WARNUNG
Lebensgefahr durch Stromschlag bei Zerstörung eines Messgeräts durch
Überspannung
Eine Überspannung kann ein Messgerät beschädigen und zum Anliegen einer Spannung am
Gehäuse des Messgeräts führen. Das Berühren des unter Spannung stehenden Gehäuses des
Messgerätes führt zum Tod oder zu lebensgefährlichen Verletzungen durch Stromschlag.
• Nur Messgeräte mit einem DC-Eingangsspannungsbereich bis mindestens 600V oder
höher einsetzen.

VORSICHT
Verbrennungsgefahr durch heiße Gehäuseteile
Gehäuseteile können während des Betriebs heiß werden. Das Berühren heißer Gehäuseteile
kann zu Verbrennungen führen.
• Während des Betriebs nur den Gehäusedeckel des Wechselrichters berühren.
VORSICHT
Verletzungsgefahr durch das Gewicht des Produkts
Durch falsches Heben und durch Herunterfallen des Produkts beim Transport oder der Montage
können Verletzungen entstehen.
• Das Produkt vorsichtig transportieren und heben. Dabei das Gewicht des Produkts
beachten.
• Bei allen Arbeiten am Produkt geeignete persönliche Schutzausrüstung tragen.
ACHTUNG
Beschädigung durch Reinigungsmittel
Durch die Verwendung von Reinigungsmitteln können das Produkt und Teile des Produkts
beschädigt werden.
• Das Produkt und alle Teile des Produkts ausschließlich mit einem mit klarem Wasser
befeuchteten Tuch reinigen.
ACHTUNG
Hohe Kosten durch ungeeigneten Internettarif
Die über das Internet übertragene Datenmenge des Produkts kann je nach Nutzung
unterschiedlich groß sein. Die Datenmenge hängt z. B. ab von der Anzahl der Wechselrichter in
der Anlage, der Häufigkeit der Geräte-Updates, der Häufigkeit der Sunny Portal-Übertragungen
oder der Nutzung von FTP-Push. Hohe Kosten für die Internetverbindung können die Folge sein.
• SMA Solar Technology AG empfiehlt die Nutzung einer Internet-Flatrate.
Änderung der Namen und Einheiten von Netzparametern zur Erfüllung der
Netzanschlussbestimmungen gemäß Verordnung (EU) 2016/631 (gültig ab
27.04.2019)
Zur Erfüllung der EU-Netzanschlussbestimmungen (gültig ab dem 27.04.2019) wurden die
Namen und Einheiten von Netzparametern geändert. Die Änderung ist ab Firmware-Version
≥3.00.00.R gültig, wenn ein Länderdatensatz zur Erfüllung der EU-
Netzanschlussbestimmungen (gültig ab 27.04.2019) eingestellt ist. Namen und Einheiten von
Netzparametern bei Wechselrichtern mit einer Firmware-Version ≤2.99.99.R sind von der
Änderung nicht betroffen und somit weiterhin gültig. Das gilt ebenso ab Firmware-Version
≥3.00.00.R, wenn ein Länderdatensatz eingestellt ist, der für Länder außerhalb der EU gültig
ist.
