SMART Board™ InteractiveWhiteboard Basics
ThisQuick Referenceprovidesan overviewofthe information you need tobeginusing aSMART Board
interactivewhiteboard. Beforeyou begin, makesurethe appropriateSMART Boardsoftwarehasbeen
loaded on yourcomputer. Formoreinformation, refertoyour SMART BoardUser’sGuide.
Starting the SMARTBoardInteractiveWhiteboard
1 Ensurethe interactivewhiteboardand projectorhavebeen connected tothe computer.
2 Turnon the projector, then the computer. The interactivewhiteboarddrawspowerfromthe computer
and will be activated automatically. You’ll knowthe whiteboardhaspowerwhen the ReadyLight on
the right side ofthe SMART Pen Trayturnsred.
3 Log on, ifrequired, using the computerkeyboard. When the ReadyLight on the pen trayturnsgreen,
the computerand interactivewhiteboardhaveestablished communication. The whiteboardisnow
touchsensitiveand you can open anyapplication availableon the attached computer.
Orienting the SMARTBoardInteractiveWhiteboard
You shouldorient yourinteractivewhiteboardwhen setting it up, orifeitherthe projectoror
interactivewhiteboardhasbeen moved sinceyou last used it.
1 Press and holdbothpen traybuttonsuntil the orientation interfaceappears.
or
Press the SMART Boardicon inthe Microsoft®Windows®Notification Area, located inthe
bottomright ofyourscreen.
2 Select Orient fromSMART BoardTools.
3 Beginorientation at the upperleft corner. Press yourfingerorpen squarelyinthe center
ofeachred cross inthe orderindicated bythe white, diamond-shaped background.
Controlling Projected Applications
Useyourfingerthe samewayyou wouldusethe mousetocontrolapplicationson the SMART Board
interactivewhiteboard.
·Fortasksthat requireadouble-click, press the whiteboardtwiceinrapidsuccession.
·Fortasksthat requirearight-click, press the RightMouse button on the pen tray. Yournext press
will be recognized asaright-click. You can alsopress and holdthe area ofthe screen you wouldlike
the interactivewhiteboardtorecognizeasaright-click.
Writing and Erasing Annotations
Pick up apen fromthe pen tray towriteon the interactivewhiteboard. You can writeoverthe desktop
oranyopen application. When writing, press firmlyand consistentlyon the whiteboardand avoid
resting yourhand on the surface. The cursorwill reappearwhen you returnthe pen tothe pen trayand
you’ll regaintouchcontrol. Ifyou returnthe pen tothe pen traywithout capturing the annotation, your
annotation will disappearthe next timeyou touchthe screen. Howtosaveannotationsiscovered on
the next page.
Pick up the eraserfromthe pen tray. Movethe eraserinasmoothmotion overyourannotationsto
erasethem. The interactivewhiteboardonlyrecognizesthe last toolremoved fromthe pen tray. For
example, ifyou alreadyhaveapen inyourhand when you pick up the eraser, the whiteboardwill
assumeyou want toerase.

Floating ToolsToolbar
Saving YourAnnotations
You can savethe annotationsthat you havewritten on the interactivewhiteboardforfuturereference.
1 Pick up apen fromthe pen trayand the Floating Toolstoolbarwill appear. You can nowsave
annotationstoaNotebook™ file.
NOTE: Ifthe Floating Toolstoolbardoesnot appearwhen picking up apen, the application you
areworking inmaybe InkAware. Ifthe application isInkAware, thesebuttons
will be availableinthe toolbar.
2 Tosaveaselected area ofyournotes, press the cameraicon on the toolbar. Then press and drag
yourfingertooutline the area you want captured. The camerabutton inInkAwareapplicationswill
capturethe entirescreen.
3 AcopyofNotebooksoftwarewill open automatically. Moreinformation on Notebooksoftwareis
outlined below.
4 Select Notebooksoftwarefromthe open programstoviewyour
notes.
NOTE: Ifyou want tosaveyournotesselect File> Save beforeclosing the Notebookfile.
Notebook Software
Notebooksoftwareactsasan electronicnotebookthat can be used toedit, saveand distribute
information written on aSMART Boardinteractivewhiteboard. Free training materialon howto
useNotebooksoftwareisavailablefordownload at http://www.smarttech.com/Trainingcenter/.
Controlling aPowerPoint®Presentation
When you run PowerPoint softwareinSlide Showviewon the SMART Boardinteractivewhiteboard, you
can controlyourpresentation using the three-button Slide Showtoolbar. You can alsousethe touch
shortcut described below.
1 Open PowerPoint softwareand yourpresentation.
2 Select View > SlideShow. The Slide Showtoolbarwill appear.
3 Tomovebackwardorforwardthrough the presentation, usethe arrowson
the Slide Showtoolbar.
You can alsoadvancetothe next slide bypressing the whiteboardtwice, making surethe second
press istothe right ofthe first. Togo back one slide, press the whiteboardtwice, making surethe
second press istothe left ofthe first.
4 Tomakeannotationson aPowerPoint slide, pick up apen fromthe SMART Pen Trayand writeover
the slide.
Saving YourPowerPoint Annotations
You can saveyourannotationsintoNotebooksoftwareordirectlyontoyourPowerPoint slide.
1 Press the middlebutton ofthe Slide Showtoolbar. Adrop-downmenu will appear.
2 TosaveyourannotationsinNotebooksoftware, select Capture to Notebook.
Notebooksoftwarewill automaticallyopen when you select thisoption.
3 Tosaveyourannotationsasobjectsinthe PowerPoint slide, choose Save
Annotationsto PowerPoint.
4 Select File> Save beforeyou closeNotebookorPowerPoint software.
NOTE: By default, PowerPoint will saveall annotationsmade during aslide show.
