The SMARTBoardinteractivewhiteboardisveryeasy touse.Ifyou can useacomputer, youcan usea
SMARTBoardinteractivewhiteboard.
The touch-sensitivedisplayconnectstoyourcomputerand projectortoshowyourcomputerimage.You
can controlapplicationsfromthedisplaywithyourfinger,writenotesindigitalinkandsaveyourworkto
sharelater.

How DoestheSMARTBoardInteractiveWhiteboardWork?
TheSMARTBoardInteractiveWhiteboardistouchsensitiveand operatesaspartofasystemthatincludes
acomputerand aprojector.
•Thecomputersendsan image ofan application tothe projector.
•Theprojectorcaststhe image ontothe interactivewhiteboard.
•Theinteractivewhiteboardactsasboththemonitorand input device,allowingyou tocontrolan
application bysimplytouching theinteractivewhiteboard.
Itmayhelpyou tothinkofyourinteractivewhiteboardthe samewayyou thinkofyourmouseorkeyboard
–itisan input devicethat enablesyou tocontrolapplicationson yourcomputer.

YourFingerisYourMouse
You can controlapplicationson yourcomputerfromthe interactivewhiteboard.A
press withyourfingeron aSMARTBoardinteractivewhiteboardisthe sameasaclick
withyourmouse. Youopen anapplication the samewayyoudoon yourdesktop
computer,butinsteadof using yourmousetoselect and open files,justpressor
double-press the application icon withyourfinger.
Orienting theinteractivewhiteboardwillensurethe cursorisaligned withyourfinger
press.Orienting isdiscussedindetailonpagefive.
TheSMARTPenTray
The SMARTPenTrayconsistsoffourcolor-coded slotsforpensand one slotforthe eraser.Eachslothas
anopticalsensortoidentifywhenthe pensand eraserhavebeen pickedup. You canwritewiththepen or
withyourfinger,aslong asapen slotisempty. The technologyinthepentrayissmartenoughtoknow
whichtoolwasremovedfromitsslot most recently. Ifyouremovetheeraserfromitsslotwhileyou arestill
holdingapen,the pentraywill assumeyouwanttoerase.The lightsabovethe toolslotsindicatewhichtool
wasremoved last.
ThePen-Tray Buttons
The pen trayhasatleasttwopen-traybuttons.One buttonisused tolaunchthe On-Screen Keyboard.The
secondbutton isused tomakeyournexttouchon the interactivewhiteboardaright-click. Someinteractive
whiteboardshaveathirdbutton;thisbuttonisused toaccess the HelpCenterquickly.
ThePens
The SMARTBoardinteractivewhiteboardcomeswithfourWhisper-tip™pens(black,red,green andblue)
andoneeraser.Although you do notneed tousethe penstowriteonyou interactivewhiteboard,the pens
domakewriting moreintuitive.Pick upapenfromthe SMARTPen Trayand beginwriting.Toeraseyour
digitalink, removethe eraserfromthepentrayandmoveit inasmoothmotion overyournotes. The notes
will thendisappear.

TheOn-ScreenKeyboard
Typeoredit textinanyapplication withoutleaving the interactivewhiteboard.
Pressthe Keyboard button on the pen traytolaunchtheOn-Screen Keyboard.
Keyboarddrop-downmenu: Allowsyou toselect whichkeyboard
you wouldliketouse.The Classickeyboardlooks likearegular
computerkeyboard.The Simplekeyboardisorganized in
alphabeticalorder,whichishelpfulwhen teaching young students.
Otherkeyboardsinclude NumberPad, Write,Shortcut and Simple
Caps.
Arrowbutton: Press theArrowbutton toopenthe PreviewPane.
Whenthe PreviewPane isopen,youcan typeanentirewordor
sentencebeforesending anyinformation toan application.When
you arefinishedtyping,pressing the Sendbutton will send yourtext
tothe activeapplication.

RightMouseButton
Press the RightMouse button on the pen traytohaveyournextpress onthe
screen recognizedasaright-click.
Agraphicinthe bottomright ofyourscreen willappeartoremind you thatyour
next presswillberegistered asaright-click.
OrientingYourSMARTBoardInteractive Whiteboard
Orientation ensuresyourtouchisregistered
accuratelywhen you areusingthe interactive
whiteboard.
Ifyou aretouching aniconandyourcursorappears
somewhereotherthanwhereyou arepressing,try
orienting the interactivewhiteboard.Afterorientation,
yourcursorshouldappearwhereveryouaretouching
the interactivewhiteboard.
TolaunchtheOrientfunction,press and holdthe
Keyboard buttonandthe RightMouse button
simultaneouslyuntilthe Orientation screen appears.
TheHelpButton
If the pentrayfeaturesahelpbutton,press ittolaunchthe HelpandSupport
forYour SMARTBoardInteractiveWhiteboard dialog box.Thedialog box
providesone-touchaccess toinformationthatwill helpyou answeralmost any
questionrelating toyourSMARTproduct.
TIP: Insteadofpressingtherightmousebutton,pressand holdonthe area ofthe screenwhereyouwould
liketomakearight-click.Afterafewsecondsof pressingand holdingthearea,the right-click menu will
appear.

YourSMARTBoardinteractivewhiteboardincludesaReadyLightthatindicatesthe statusofyour
interactivewhiteboard.
ColorofReadyLight Status
Notlit The interactivewhiteboarddoesnothavepower.ChecktheUSB cable
connections.
Solidgreen The interactivewhiteboardissuccessfullycommunicating withthe SMART
Boardsoftwareonthe computer.
Flashing green The SMARTBoardinteractivewhiteboardissuccessfully
communicatingwiththecomputer’sUSB driver.
NOTE:Inthisstate,theinteractivewhiteboardonlyoperatesasatouchscreen.
Forfullfunctionality,ensureSMARTBoardsoftwareisinstalledonyour
computer.
Solidred The interactivewhiteboardhaspower,butit isnotcommunicatingwiththe
computer.During the initialpowering up orpowerreset, you willsee the
ReadyLightturnred foramoment.This brief red illuminationisnormal
behavior.
Flashing amber Occursonlywhenyou areupdating firmwareusingSMART’sFirmware
Flashing Wizard.Thisisanormalbehavior.
Solidamber Problemstate.Tryresetting theinteractivewhiteboardbydisconnecting and
thenreconnectingthe USB cableatthe interactivewhiteboardend.

WritingNotes
Makenotesordrawingsbyremovingapenfromthe pen trayand writing onthe surfaceofthe interactive
whiteboard.
TheTransparency Layer
When you removeapenfromthepen tray, aborderappearsaroundyourdesktop, andthe FloatingTools
toolbarlaunches.Theborderindicatesthe transparencylayerisinplace,andyou can writeon the desktop
justasyou wouldwriteon atransparentsheet.Thetransparencylayerand itsvisibleborderremaininplace
untilallpensandthe eraserhavebeen returnedtothe pen trayand you touchthe board.Yourfirsttouch
onthe board,afterreturningallthe pen traytools,willremovetheborderandanynotesordrawingsyou
havemade.
Restoring YourNotes andDrawings
Ifyou accidentallyclearyourwriting bytouching theboard,you can restorethemby
pressingthe Click heretorestorewriting icon, located inthe lowerright ofthe
screen.Youcan then usethe AreaCapturebuttontosaveyournotes.
If you do not seethe Click heretorestorewriting message,pickup apenfromthe
pentraytolaunchthe Floating Toolstoolbar.Press the Undo button torestoreyour
notesand drawings.

CapturingYourNotesandDrawings
TheFloating Toolstoolbarautomaticallylauncheswhen you pick up apenfromthe PenTray.You canuse
the Area Capture button tocaptureyournotesand drawings.
Tocapturean area ofyourdesktop,followthesesteps:
1Press the AreaCapture button onthe Floating
Toolstoolbar.TheArea Capturetoolwill appear.
2Press on anycornerofthe area youwishto
captureand,continuing topress,dragthe selection
boxuntil itsurroundstheentirearea.

roombecauseyou wereunabletoaccess the Internet fromthe oldlocation.You will be thefirstperson to
usethe interactivewhiteboardinthe newenvironmentandwill be showing everyone howtousethe
interactivewhiteboardand the Internettogether.
You havelearned through experiencethatwheneverapieceof technologygetsmoved, it’sagood idea to
testitbeforeyou deliveralesson orpresentation.The computer,SMARTBoardinteractivewhiteboardand
projectorappeartobe working properlywhen youturneverything on.However,when you double-press the
Internetbrowsericon on yourdesktop,yourcursorappearsafewinchesawayfromyourfingerpress.
OrientingYourSMARTBoardInteractive Whiteboard
You rememberthatwhen the projectororinteractivewhiteboardmoveslocation, youshouldorientthe
SMARTBoard.Thiswilltellthe computerwherethe imageofthedesktop isbeingdisplayed onthe surface
of the interactivewhiteboard.
1Toorienttheinteractivewhiteboard,pressand holdthe Keyboard button and the RightMouse
button simultaneouslyuntil the Orientationscreen appears.
2Begintheorientationprocess atthe upperleft cornerof the Orientationscreen.Press yourfingeror
penfirmlyonthe centerofeachcross inthe orderindicated bythe white,diamond-shaped graphic.
NOTE:Thepointisregistered when you removeyourfinger,notwhenyou firsttouchthe Orientation

1Using yourfinger,double-press on the Internetbrowsericon (e.g.,InternetExplorer) tolaunchthe
Internet.
2Press the On-ScreenKeyboard buttonon the SMARTPen Tray.
3Press onceinside yourInternetbrowser’saddress bartoselectthe websiteaddress.
4Using the On-Screen Keyboard,type www.google.com.
