1. Introduction
SmartMan Baby ©is a full body CPR training manikin system for the simulation of realistic and
correct anatomical conditions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is designed to provide digital
feedback when connected to a PC computer. It provides accurate feedback on rate, depth and
release of the chest along with rate, volume, and timing for ventilations. It has a special section
develop correct procedures for giving ventilations.
The physical manikin provides an exceptionally lifelike representation of the baby anatomy,
particularly of those features important to training in modern resuscitation techniques.
If mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is performed it is recommended that a hygienic face shield with anti-
bacterial filter be used.
1.1 Operating Principles
When air is blown through the mouth and nose of the face piece air enters the lungs. A correct
seal and correct position of the head (in the neutral position) is required.
When given correctly air will pass through the neck tube into the lung bag which expands and
elevates the chest. The rise will be small and the whole chest will tighten as it expands.
When external cardiac compression is performed it will expel air in the lungs. If the head is moved
into an incorrect position when a ventilation is given, this can cause air to become blocked within
the baby.

The arms and legs are permanently attached and cannot be removed. If you pull hard on the legs,
they will break. To open the baby, you must follow the correct procedures.

3.2. Connecting the Manikin to the Computer
Plug the mini USB cable into the plug and the other end into the computer. Allow a minute for the
driver for the manikin to be loaded into the operating system.
3.3 Starting the Software
Double click the icon on the screen. The program will verify the connection. If the connection is not
able to be established, the software will load but display a window saying the baby is not connected.
The software can be used without connecting to the manikin for specific functions such as creating
logins, reviewing results and printing reports.
NOTE: The first time the software is installed on a computer, the system must be connected to the
manikin.
3.4 Using the Software
When the software verifies the connection, you will see the LOGIN MENU. In order to perform any
activity on the system, you must login. You can click on the Practice Session Login to go directly to
the Main Menu. You can quickly create your own logins or use an existing login. You do not require
an internet connection to create logins and you do not require a key code to create logins.
MAIN MENU. Once you login you will be at the main menu. Here you will see the Skills Set Menu.
Click on one of the skill areas (Compressions, Ventilations, CPR, Tutor). When you click on each of
these, the activities which you can perform are displayed. When you select an activity, click the large
green start button to begin performing the skill. Feedback will appear as soon as you perform any
skill.
TRAINER TOOLS. The trainer is able to view all results at any time. To view results there is no need
to be connected to the manikin or to the internet. There is a special Trainer Tools Menu which allows
the trainer to create classes and logins, to copy a list from Word or a txt file, to quickly produce
charts from results, and to create a zip file from results and send them to an email address. To
access the Trainer Tools Menu, login with any login such as Practice Sessions. At the Main Menu
click on the Trainer Tools Button at the right side of the window. To exit the Trainer Tools Menu, click
the Trainer Tools button a second time.
3.5 Updating the Software
You do not need to be connected to the manikin to update the software.
You must be connected to the internet to update the software.
To update the software, start the software by double clicking on the icon. When you are at the Login
Menu, click the Update button on the right side of the main window. You will be given the option to
update the software or not. If you have not updated the software for a while, there may be several
updates. When one update has finished, it will indicate whether there is another update available or
not. If so repeat the procedure.
4. Using the Baby Manikin Training System
The SmartMan Baby and Neonate systems are designed to meet all the training
recommendations of the American Heart Association (AHA). However, it is recommended that
instruction should be based on the techniques and provisions applicable in jurisdiction where
instruction takes place. Instruction may be given in correct head movement. The airway will be
obstructed on incorrect position.

SmartMan Baby and Neonate Manikin Training Systems - pg. 5
The airway will be closed if the head is excessively extended. Head tilt-chin lift should not be used
with a baby. Chest compression can be practiced according to current standards (AHA)
requirements. The chest should be compressions just above the nipple line. As the fingers move
off of the ideal position compressions will become less effective.
As you perform skills on the manikin, you will receive real time feedback on how well you are
performing.
5. Re-adjusting Face Piece and Holder
The face piece attaches to the holder. If for some reason the face becomes dislodged from its
holder, it is necessary to replace this correctly. If the face is not correctly attached, leakage during
ventilations will occur.
It is important that the holder makes a tight seal with the face piece the head bag.
The Face Piece
The Holder
This fits snugly onto the holder.
Pull up one edge first and then
remove the rest. To replace,
reverse the process
This is the connector for the
face piece and the head. It
should be snug without
leakage

SmartMan Baby and Neonate Manikin Training Systems - pg. 6
o5.1 Remove Face Piece
Pull the mask upwards and pull one edge off until it is free of the edge of the holder (see
above). Then pull the remaining part off of the holder. Be careful not to rip the back of
the face piece.
o5.1 Replace the Face Piece
Pull the face so it is almost inside out. Line up the face so that it is straight with the body.
Slip one edge over the lip of the holder. Maintaining pressure so that the edge does not
slip off, firmly push the rest of the lip onto the holder.
6. Cleaning and Disinfection
No internal cleaning and disinfection is necessary.
6.1 Cleaning of Head Bag
Each trainee has his/her own disposable head bag which should always be discarded after
training.
6.2 Cleaning of Face Piece
The face pieces can be reused after cleaning and disinfection.
6.3 Cleaning of Holder (for Face Piece and Head Bag)
Wash with soap and water. Wash items in warm water, max. 65°C, using a mild detergent.
Rinse thoroughly in clean water to remove all traces of detergent and allow to dry before
storing.
Warning: This must NOT be cleaned with anything except soap and water.
6.4 Manual Washing
Rinse the face pieces in clean water. Wash items in warm water, max. 65°C, using a mild
detergent. Rinse thoroughly in clean water to remove all traces of detergent and allow to dry
before storing.
6.4 Machine Washing
The face pieces can be washed automatically. Apply a normal amount of detergent and
choose a washing program with a maximum temperature of 65°C. Allow items to dry before
storing.

SmartMan Baby and Neonate Manikin Training Systems - pg. 7
6.5 Disinfection of Face
If the face becomes infected, the face piece can be cleaned (do NOT do this with the HOLDER)
Place the items in a sodium hypochlorite solution with minimum 500 ppm freely accessible
chlorine (1/4 of a cup of liquid household bleach per gallon (approx. 4 litres) of tap water for
10 minutes). This solution must be fresh and should be discarded after use.
Place the items in a 70% ethyl alcohol solution for minimum 30 minutes.
Chemical disinfection can also be performed using recognized disinfectants suitable for use
with polyvinylchloride (PVC). The supplier's directions on dosage and disinfection period
should be closely followed. Always rinse the face pieces in clean water after disinfection and
allow to dry before storing.
7.1 Cleaning of the Skull, Neck and Body
The skull, neck, body, arms and legs of the SmartMan Baby should be wiped over with a cloth
moistened in a mild detergent and then wiped over with a cloth moistened in clean water. The
training manikin must not be submerged in water nor should water be allowed to enter the internal
parts. Marks on the SmartMan Baby left by lipstick or ball pen can penetrate the material and should
therefore be removed as quickly as possible using alcohol.
7.2 Cleaning of Clothing
The baby panties are made of 100% cotton and are washable in the usual way for such material at
max. 60°C.
Warning: The face pieces must not be boiled, autoclaved or gas sterilized.
Warning: This must NOT be cleaned with anything except soap and water.
