Xperia Z2: Introduction
Xperia Z2 is the latest premium flagship
smartphone from Sony that encapsulates the very
embodiment of the “One Sony” ethos. Featuring
the world’s best camera and camcorder in a
waterproof smartphone1, Xperia Z2 brings together
Sony’s industry leading technologies with features
including the award-winning “G Lens”, “Exmor RS
for mobile”, 4K video recording with SteadyShot™,
a vivid 5.2” Full HD TRILUMINOS display with Live
Colour LED and the world’s first Digital Noise Cancelling technology in a smartphone2.
This reference guide is designed help you quickly understand and make the most of

The camera in Xperia Z2 is designed using
technical expertise from the same digital
imaging team at Sony that made the world’s first
electronic camera and consumer camcorder.
The result is the best image quality and Sony’s
most advanced camcorder ever in an 8.2 mm
slim smartphone.

Xperia Z2 features a 20.7MP camera
paired with a 1/2.3 Exmor RS for mobile
image sensor, Sony’s award-winning G
Lens and intelligent BIONZ™ for mobile
image processing engine, resulting in
brilliant photo and video quality. The
lens in Xperia Z2 is a 27mm wide-angle Sony G Lens allowing focal lengths as low as
F2.0 –why? The lower the focal length, the more light we can pull in. Combine this with
the larger sensor and dedicated image processing engine, and the result is camera that
can perform in the most challenging situations from bright backlit objects, like the photo
above, to near-darkness.
Xperia Z2 takes mobile video recording to a whole new level. With new enhanced video
modes you can now capture memories in stunning detail. Using a video resolution of 4K
(3840 x 2160 pixels) Xperia Z2 offers four times the detail of Full HD so you can relive
moments on MHL 3.0 compatible 4K displays, or view downscaled clips using a
traditional MHL 2.0 connector on a Full HD screen. Plus, with the ability to zoom in on
recorded video, you can get closer to the details without losing out on image quality.
Suggested Demo: Try taking a 4K video of a building or flower from a distance. When
watching back, you can pinch and zoom to focus on the structure or petals in crisp and
clear detail thanks to the 4K resolution.
A growing ecosystem of Xperia camera apps
Xperia Z2 builds upon Sony’s heritage in high
performance photography and video recording,
allowing you to enhance your mobile experience with
a growing range of innovative Xperia camera apps,
now available for video too.

Timeshift video: Relive every moment of the action in slow motion detail. The new
Timeshift video mode lets you shoot in 120fps and select scenes to slow the playback
speed for dramatic slow motion effects, even underwater. Learn more about Timeshift

Creative effect: Use a range of new
creative effects for your photos and videos.
Available in real-time for video, these
adjustments enhance your clips with a
range of effects such as colours, image
trails, mirror and motion.
Background defocus: This new camera app
simulates a shallow depth of field. Capture two
photos at different focus settings and blend
together the different depths to create a blurred
out background for more professional looking
photos.
AR effects: Now available for video recording,
have some fun with your photos and videos
with new augmented reality animations,
including sound effects for video.
Vine: Discover, create and share short, beautiful, looping videos in
a simple and fun way - all from your device. Plus, using the
dedicated camera button, you can capture Vine videos underwater
as well.

of extra apps for to enjoy including Wikitude Places, Evernote, V1 Sports and more.
Simply go into your camera viewfinder, tap the camera mode icon, and then click on
‘+Apps’ to see all the latest apps available on Sony Select to enhance your smartphone
experience.
In bright and vivid detail
To enjoy the latest content in stunning quality and vivid colour, Xperia Z2’s screen is built
using the latest BRAVIA®TV technologies optimised for mobile and is the World’s first
smartphone display with Live Colour LED3.
The 5.2” Full HD TRILUMINOS™ display for
mobile with Live Colour LED provides the
widest palette of rich natural colours for the
sharpest images and a viewing experience that
is as close to reality as possible.

Natural and true to life colours, can be difficult to
reproduce on a display. TRILUMINOSTM Display
for mobile, with brand new Live Colour LED, uses
red and green phosphor with blue LEDs and
customised colour filters to produce a brighter
and more uniform light.
Sony’s intelligent super resolution technology, X-Reality
for mobile, analyses each image to optimise colour,
sharpness and contrast while also reducing noise. The
super resolution function reproduces lacking pixels for
spectacular clarity and detail. The result is richer colours
on the screen for all of your smartphone viewing, without the risk of saturation. Finally,
with IPS incorporated on the screen you can enjoy better viewing angles for enjoying
entertainment on Xperia Z2.
World’s first Digital Noise Cancelling technology in

Xperia Z2 offers amazing sound quality with
stereo speaker output and Sony’s acutely
engineered digital noise cancelling
technology. Whether you’re on a plane, on
the bus or in the office, enjoy music on the go without the interruption of background
noise. The digital noise cancelling technology and dynamic sound in Xperia Z2 helps
reduce up to 98% of ambient noise when used with the compact in-ear MDR NC31EM
Digital Noise Cancelling Headset. You can also immerse yourself in entertainment with
S-Force Front Surround™ to enjoy the latest movies, gaming and music on your Xperia
Z2.

How does it work?
Digital noise cancelling works by attaching two small microphones to the earpieces of the
MDR NC31EM headset. These feed sound back to the innovative software in Xperia Z2 which
reads it, turns the sound wave upside-down and plays it back into the earpiece. When the two
sound waves meet, because they are the opposite of each other, they cancel each other out,
and in this way Sony is able to eliminate up to 98% of background noise. Sony combines this
technology with a bigger driver in the earpieces to produce a better, clearer sound - all of
which is a long way of saying you get to experience your audio in brilliant clarity without being
distracted by background hum.

“WALKMAN®” app through the Music Unlimited5service, and tens of thousands of
movies and TV series on the Movies app through Video Unlimited from Sony
Entertainment Network.
PlayMemories Online5- a cloud-based image and video service that is integrated
into the Album application. A new ‘All Sync’ feature enables users to instantly auto-
upload all of their photos without storage limitation6to enjoy on all your devices.
Xperia –a rich heritage in design
Xperia Z2 builds upon Sony’s rich design heritage and has been crafted with the user in
mind, drawing on Sony’s expertise in premium craftsmanship. Evolving Sony’s stunning
Omnibalance design, Xperia Z2 has a slimmer and more comfortable feel by having the
glass panels encased in a single, solid aluminium frame with smoother edges.
Sony has listened to its customers, with the open headset
jack designed to be fully waterproof, an improved display
ratio for an optimal viewing experience and a handset that is
lighter and thinner than Xperia Z1. The dedicated camera
button means that you’re ready to capture the action
wherever you are –both in and out of the water. The stunning 5.2” display, bigger than
its predecessor in Xperia Z1 whilst maintaining a similar overall handset size, is balanced
with symmetry in design, providing a natural feel when held in your hand.
Xperia Z2 continues Xperia waterproof and dust-resistant features with an IP55/IP58
rating, meaning it’s protected against the ingress of dust and can be kept under 1.5
metre of freshwater for up to 30 minutes, provided all ports and covers are firmly shut7.
Sony has also included wet finger tracking to ensure you can use the screen without
glitches, even when it’s wet.

If you want to demo the waterproofness and underwater use of the camera, simply drop
the phone into water and start taking pictures. Pick the phone out of the water and,

801 processor with 2.3 GHz quad-core Krait
CPUs and 4G LTE, Xperia Z2 offers ultra-fast

330 GPU for rich graphics and gaming, and a dual ISP for a seamless camera, camcorder
