In order to properly install and adjust the Bind-Fast 5, the following tools are needed:
• An adjustable wrench
• A Phillips screwdriver
• A 12” steel ruler
• Bind-Fast Adjusting Gauge 8-6502
JOG TABLE ADJUSTMENTS
The carriage and its supporting rails are the common element between assemblies, so all major
adjustments use the carriage rails as a reference. Included are adjustment gauges that will seat in
the carriage rails to enable simplified and accurate adjustments of all the sub-assemblies.
The jog table should only be adjusted when adhesive is being unevenly applied. This adjustment
should be made with the jog table switch off and the jog plate cold.
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE:
• Send the carriage to the left-hand side of the machine by pressing the “Bind” switch.
• Place the gauge between the rails, with the edge marked “Check Jog Table” downward.
• Move the table to the raised position by shifting the table right until it is even with the machine
frame. The table may be secured in this position by inserting a 6” scale or a thin piece of metal
between the jog plate and the table end and allowing it to rest against the end of the machine.
• Check to insure that the jog table just touches the gauge but does not lift it from the carriage
rails.
• Repeat for the other end of the jog table.
IF IT’S CORRECT, PROCEED TO ‘DRUM ADJUSTMENTS’, IF NOT:
• Remove the jog table by grasping and lifting straight upward (note the table is plugged into the
front wall of the machine).
• An adjustable bearing at each corner supports the table.
• Identify the four adjusting bolts and locking nuts located at each support bearing.
For machines using KEP nuts (with lock washers attached) loosen the nuts and re-tighten
them finger tight.
⇒
⇒ For machines using elastic stop nuts (with plastic locking insert); loosen each nut 1/6 turn or
1 flat of the nut.
• Replace the jog table.
• Move the jog table to the raised position by shifting the table right until it is even with the
machine frame.
• Secure the jog table in place.
• Lower the support bearings by turning the adjusting screw counterclockwise.

• Place the adjusting gauge with the side labeled “ Check Jog Table” facing down onto the rails,
first on the left edge of the jog table.
• Raise the adjusting screws at each corner until there is .01 in (3-20 lb. sheets of paper) space
between the bottom of the gauge and the jog table
• Repeat procedure to adjust the right side of the table.
• Check to ensure the space is even front, back left, and right.
• Remove the adjusting gauge and the jog table to tighten the locking nuts. Then replace the jog
table.
• Bring the table back up to the raised position
• Insert the gauge as before and turn the adjusting screws (leave locking nuts tight) until the jog
table is just touching the adjusting gauge. Check to ensure that the gauge is not being lifted off
the rails.
• Adjusting one end of the table will affect the other, so it’s best to make this final adjustment in
two or three steps.
• Finally, with the table in its raised position and correctly adjusted, tap the left rear and right
front corners of the table with a finger. If a clicking sound is heard, the table bearings are not all
in contact with the table. The right front bearing and only the right front bearing may be raised
or lowered to correct the rocking. Raise or lower until the rocking just stops. Then, recheck with
your gauge.
DRUM ADJUSTMENTS
This adjustment must be made with the drum hot and the machine in the “Ready” condition.
• Adjust the adhesive thickness to minimum, then move the carriage to the left side of the
machine.
• Remove all adhesive from the top surface of the drum. Place the gauge with the side labeled
"Check Drum” facing down onto the carriage rails and slide the gauge directly over the center of
the drum. CAUTION: DRUM AND TANK ARE VERY HOT.
• Adjust the two tank leveling screws, visible through the right end of the tank shroud, until the
drum just touches both legs of the gauge without lifting it off the rails. Do not touch the single
screw at the opposite side of the tank.
The Bind-Fast 5 can drift out of alignment during shipping or especially after heavy use. If this
happens, follow the instructions below or call your dealer for assistance. If re-alignment is
necessary, the following tools are required:
• An adjustment wrench

• A Phillips screwdriver
• A straight edge
• The Bind-Fast Adjusting Gauge 8-6952
Only adjust the nipper table if the spine on perfect bound books is not square or even. Do this after
the jog table and drum have been adjusted.
NIPPER TABLE ADJUSTMENTS
The carriage and its supporting rails are the common element between assemblies, so all major
adjustments use the carriage rails as a reference. The Bind-Fast adjustment gauges seat in the
carriage rails to enable simplified and accurate adjustments of all the sub-assemblies.
The first adjustment for the nipper table is its alignment with the carriage. Close the nipper jaws
using handle and turn the adjusting knob until the blades just touch. Use the handle to open the
nipper jaws and turn the adjusting knob ½ turn counter clock-wise. Bring carriage over nipper
table. Now close the nipping jaws and sight down the rear carriage clamp (a straight edge is
useful). The line between the two jaws should align with the rear carriage clamp. Notice how
much the table has to be moved and in which direction.
Adjust the plastic screws on the front and rear of the nipping station. Ensure the nipping station can
move freely but without excessive play and re-adjust if necessary. Bring the carriage over and re-
check.
At this point you may need to recalibrate your drum guard pointer. Using the operating handle and
the adjustment knob, bring the nipper jaws together so that they just touch. Move the handle to the
open position and rotate the adjustment knob one complete turn counterclockwise. Make sure that
the carriage is fully closed and clamped. Push the drum guard pointer down against the nipper jaws.
The line on the nipper jaw should be centered in the “v” of the drum guard pointer. If it’s not
centered, loosen the drum guard screws, slide the guard to the proper position, and re-tighten the
screws.
Now, check the table height adjustments:
• With the carriage above the jog table, pull the handle to close the nipper blades. Adjust them
until they just touch and leave them closed. Insert the gauge (Part Number 8-6952) onto the
carriage rails over the right side of the nipper table using the side of the gauge labeled “Tank
End”.
• Move the nipper table into its raised position by shifting the table left until there is one inch
between the end of the table and the tank cover.
• Check that the gauge just touches the nipper table and is not lifted from the rails.
• Now do the left side. With the table held in its full raised position, use the side of the gauge
labeled “Machine End”. Check that the gauge just touches the nipper table and is not lifted
from the rails.

IF THE ADJUSTMENTS ARE CORRECT, YOU ARE NOW READY TO MAKE PERFECT BOUND
BOOKS. IF NOT, THIS IS HOW TO ADJUST THE NIPPER TABLE.
• Remove the nipper table from the machine by lifting it directly upwards.
• There have been two styles of locking nuts used on the Bind-Fast 5. The adjusting procedure
varies from each, so you must determine which type is used on your machine.
For machines using KEP nuts (lock washers attached), loosen the nuts and re-tighten them
finger tight.
For machines using elastic stop nuts (plastic locking insert), loosen each nut 1/6 turn or 1
flat of the nut.
• Replace the nipper table.
• Move the table left to its raised position and secure by using a 1-inch thick piece between the
table and the tank.
• Pull the handle to close the nipper blades. Adjust them until they just touch, and leave them
closed.
• Place the adjusting gauge labeled “Table Height” onto the carriage rails over the right side of
the nipper table. Using the side of the gauge labeled “Tank End” lower the bearings at the end
of the table, then raise them until there is .01 inch between the gauge and the table. Move the
gauge to the end of the table and use the side of the gauge labeled "Machine End”. Raise these
bearings, and then lower them until there is .01 inch between the gauge and the inside bottom of
the rails (use.01 inch thick feeler gauge or 3 pieces of 20-lb. paper).
• Remove the table and tighten the bearing nuts firmly (do not over tighten).
• Leaving the nuts tightened and using the correct side of the gauge for each end of the table,
proceed as follows: Raise the table end nearest the tank until it just touches the gauge. At the
other end of the table, near the end of the machine lower the table until the gauge just touches
the inside bottoms of the rails. This will help ensure that the table is not raised or lowered too
far. Remember that an adjustment on one end effects the other end, so you can avoid a “see-
saw” effect by adjusting in small increments.
• With the table raised and adjusted, tap near the left rear bearing and right front bearing with
your finger. If there is a clicking, the table bearings are not level. Raise the right front bearing
until it is no longer noticeable.
