Which solar panel fits to mVELO?
The mVELO was specially designed to work highly efficiently with different
solar panels. The connector must be SAE plug or DC plug round hollow type
5.5 x 2.1mm (These are standard for solar panels of SUNLOAD).
Be careful when using connector cables from other manufacturers! The plugs may have
the inverse polarity! Double check it with the polarity symbol at the mVELO label.
The acceptable DC input voltage of the mVELO is limited to 30 V.
Please note that the open circuit voltage of the solar module must be lower than 30 V;
otherwise mVELO will be damaged!
As regards the size of the module, please note that the maximum power
the device may process amounts to 60 W. Above an input power of 60 W
the charge current will be automatically limited. Depending on the weather
conditions, we recommend to use solar panels with a peak power from 25 W
to 100 Watt. Higher panel power will not accelerate the charging process!
Please note that even a minor shadow on the solar panel surface considerably
reduces its power. When using a 62 Wp solar panel perfectly oriented towards
the sun – in Berlin, you will generate 45-50 Wh per hour. This amount of
energy correspondences a range of 5-8 km under realistic conditions
(www.Extraenergy.org).

Usage
Do not leave the mVELO with the battery in the car or in the sun, because the acceptable
ambient temperature can be exceeded. Do not use the mVELO and the battery by strong
variations of temperature and air humidity to prevent the appearance of condensation on
the surface of the devices. The temperature of the mVELO rises when using. It is usual.
Input: how to charge from solar power
In order to obtain as much solar energy as possible, the mVELO device uses
the MPP tracking method. MPP (maximum power point) means that the po-
wer characteristic of the solar cells are constantly monitored and kept within
the maximum capacity range. This result is an average additional solar yield of
up to 20% as compared with systems without MPP tracking.
How to connect the solar panel
1
Please connect your output plug of mVELO with the input of the
pedelec battery first before connecting the plug of the solar panel
to the mVELO input port. When connecting the solar panel make
sure to avoid any short circuit at the panel jack because it could
damage the solar panel.
See “Which panel ts to mVELO”
2 As soon as enough light is cast on the solar panel, the sun symbol
will appear on the display.
3 Position your solar panel perfectly in the sunlight. Observe the
indicated solar power WOUT while changing the position of the solar
panel. The optimum position is reached when the display shows the
maximum value.

13
Input: charge with a 12 V car adapter (CLA)
The scope of delivery involves a 12 V car adapter cable (optional an adapter
cable with battery alligator clips for car batteries). You may charge your
pedelec battery from every 12 V car jack without the solar panel.
There is no danger of deep cycle for a car or solar battery. But the start battery
should not give more than 100 Wh to make possible the car battery to start.
One hour charging generates enough power for up to 10 km. The deep cycle
of car battery is not possible. mVELO finishes the charging automatically
above the minimum charging voltage of your car battery.
Charging from 24 V board voltage is possible in principle, but there is no protection from
deep discharging of 24V car battery.
Do not use mVELO and pedelec battery at high temperatures and strong sunshine in the
car, because high temperatures can damage these devices.
Output: charge the pedelec battery
Before starting the charging process, make sure, whether your mobile device is
suitable for a charging voltage (see “which battery ts to mVELO).
Before charging the device make sure whether your pedelec battery is based on the
Li-Ion technology and if the voltage of both devices matches. The overload can
damage your battery, for instance, if mVELO with nominal output voltage 37 V is
connected to a 26 V pedelec battery.

14
Please, follow the manufacturer instructions of your pedelec battery, especially the
temperature and storage conditions.
Please connect your output plug of mVELO with the input of the pedelec
battery for charging first before plug in the current source.
Charge the battery till the procedure is completed (charging power = „0“
[WOUT]).
The solar device was specially developed to charge Li-Ion pedelec batteries
(type cobald, mangan or phosphat not NiMH).
The relatively low charging performance can’t stress or damage the pedelec
battery. The charging current depends on charging voltage and is limited
for charging initial and circuit voltage to prevent the early aging of pedelec
battery.
How to check the battery status
The mVELO measures the power charged in the pedelec battery with
accuracy up to +/- 2% and is suitable as a measuring device to determine the
battery status.
The maximum charged energy for a pedelec battery (capacity) is a measure
for battery status or aging status.
To measure the maximum capacity discharges your battery completely.
Supply your mVELO with current and set the Wh-display to “0” (WhOUT).
You can read the max. capacity of the pedelec battery in the display mode
WhOUT when the charging process is finished.
To get a reference value we recommend to carry out this process with the
new battery. Wait until the new battery is charged 3 times to ensure measu-
ring the maximum capacity.
The measuring value can be compared with the capacity of the pedelec
battery declared by the manufacturer (see the nameplate, Wh = nominal

15
voltage [V] x capacity [Ah]).
The minimum discharge voltage and maximum charge voltage determine
the max. storage capacity in practice. A new battery can have a deviation up
to 10% to the nominal capacity [Wh].
Batteries compatibility
Pedelecs have with few exceptions batteries in Li-Ion technology. You should
differ between voltage of 26 V ( 7S, series circuit with 7 units) and 37 V ( 10S,
series circuit with 10 units). This is the fact that the most manufacturers use
the XLR plug, but the number of pins and pin allocation are different.
So even plugs that looks like to be compatible with sockets, might be incompatible.
A damage of the mVELO, your battery or other devices might happen! Please ask your
dealer to make sure, that the mVELO is suitable for your battery type. Any usage with
other batteries is permitted.

16
The SUNLOAD energy management
All SUNLOAD products are optimized for energy efficiency, as well as the
mVELO.
The MPP method makes possible that a solar panel has always the maximum
power more independent from the external conditions. On the other hand the
consumption of energy of the mVELO is optimized to spare the resources.
