BOOKWALTER®Retractor
Component
Indications
This instrument has been designed for use
with one of our BOOKWALTER Retractor
systems providing multi-directional exposure
for various surgical specialties. Refer to
the instruction manual that provides complete
operating instructions and is supplied with
the BOOKWALTER Retractor system you
will employ.
Description
Refer to the package label for a description
of contents.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
The retractor system can exert a great amount
of force on the wound edges and on tissues.
Release the retractor blades for short periods
of time or shift the blades to avoid having
unrelieved pressure on any one point.
If the table is to be tilted toward the side
holding the post, it is important to place
adequate padding between the table post and
the patient. Pressure necrosis or a nerve palsy
could result if the patient is pressed against
the unpadded bar for a long period.
Precautions
As with any self-retaining retractor, do not
exert undue retraction pressure on the
iliopsoas muscle to prevent possible femoral
nerve palsy.
If using monopolar electrosurgical equipment
while using any of our BOOKWALTER
Retractor systems, consult the basic rules

of usage concerning electrosurgery (see
EN 60 601-2-2), as well as the manufacturer’s
instructions for use regarding specific
warnings and conditions.
Be sure to electrically isolate the patient
from (high frequency leakage currents to)
the operating table, in accordance with the
instructions provided by the manufacturer of
the electrosurgical equipment.
Ensure that the patient does not come into
contact with metal parts that are earthed or
that have an appreciable capacitance to earth
(for example: operating table, supports), in
accordance with the instructions provided by the
manufacturer of the electrosurgical equipment.
Avoid small-area contacts with objects having
a low impedance to earth at high frequencies,
as unwanted burns can result.
Adjusting the Rotating
Ratchet Mechanism
The rotatable ratchet mechanism can be
adjusted to one of 7 indexed positions along
an arc of 60 degrees. The pressure of the
ring on the interior of the ratchet mechanism
maintains the selected position. To adjust
the rotation of a retractor blade during the
procedure, pull the ratchet mechanism slightly
away from the ring; rotate the retractor blade
to another indexed position as desired;
replace the ratchet mechanism on the ring.

MISES EN GARDES ET
PRÉCAUTIONS D’EMPLOI
Le système d’écartement peut exercer une
force importante sur les bords de la plaie
et les tissus. Libérer l’écarteur ou déplacer
les lames de temps à autre afin d’éviter
d’exercer une pression constante en un
point quelconque.
Si la table doit être inclinée vers le côté
maintenant le pied, il est important de placer
un rembourrage approprié entre le pied de
la table et le patient. Une nécrose due à
une irrigation sanguine insuffisante ou une
paralysie nerveuse pourrait survenir si le
patient demeure longtemps appuyé contre la
barre non rembourrée.
Précautions d’emploi
Comme avec tout écarteur auto-rétenseur,
ne pas exercer une pression de rétraction
excessive sur le muscle psoas iliaque afin
d’éviter une éventuelle paralysie du nerf crural.

En cas d’utilisation d’un équipement
électrochirugical unipolaire avec l’un de nos
systèmes écarteurs BOOKWALTER, consulter
les règles fondamentales d’utilisation de
l’électrochirurgie (voir EN 60 601-2-2), ainsi
que les instructions du fabricant relatives aux
avertissements et conditions spécifiques.
S’assurer que le patient est électriquement
isolé de (courants de fuite haute fréquence
vers) la table d’opération, conformément
aux instructions fournies par le fabricant de
l’équipement électrochirurgical.
S’assurer que le patient n’entre pas en
contact avec des pièces métalliques mises
à la terre ou ayant une capacité électrique
appréciable à la terre (par exemple : table
d’opération, supports), conformément aux
instructions fournies par le fabricant de
l’équipement électrochirurgical.
Éviter de mettre en contact les objets ayant une
faible impédance à la terre à des fréquences
élevées avec des surfaces réduites, ceci
risquant d’entraîner des brûlures involontaires.
Réglage du mécanisme orientable
à cliquet
Le mécanisme orientable à cliquet peut être
réglé sur l’une des 7 positions indexées le
long d’un arc de 60 degrés. La pression de
l’anneau sur la partie interne du mécanisme
à cliquet maintient la position sélectionnée.
Pour régler la rotation de la lame d’un écarteur
lors d’une intervention, écarter légèrement
le mécanisme à cliquet de l’anneau ; faire
tourner la lame de l’écarteur vers une autre
position indexée souhaitée ; replacer le
mécanisme à cliquet sur l’anneau.

Dieses Instrument ist für die Verwendung

WARNHINWEISE UND
VORSICHTSMASSNAHMEN
Mit dem Retraktorsystem kann starker
Druck auf Wundränder und Gewebe ausgeübt
werden. Deshalb sollte der Retraktor ab und
zu für kurze Zeit gelöst werden bzw. sollten die
Klingen versetzt werden, so dass der Druck
auf eine einzelne Stelle nicht länger anhält.
Es ist wichtig, ausreichende Polster
zwischen der Tischbefestigung und dem
Patienten anzubringen, wenn der Tisch
zu der Seite gekippt wird, die die vertikale
Tischbefestigung hält. Drucknekrosen oder
eine Nervenlähmung können eintreten, wenn
der Patient über einen längeren Zeitraum
gegen den ungepolsterten Stab gedrückt wird.
Vorsichtsmaßnahmen
Wie bei jedem anderen selbsthaltenden
Retraktor darf kein übermäßiger
Retraktionsdruck auf den M. iliopsoas
ausgeübt werden, um mögliche femorale
Nervenlähmungen zu vermeiden.

Bei Verwendung monopolarer
elektrochirurgischer Geräte zusammen
mit einem unserer BOOKWALTER
Retraktorsysteme sind die allgemeinen
Hinweise für den elektrochirugischen Einsatz
(siehe EN 60 601-2-2) sowie die besonderen
Warnhinweise und Bedingungen des
Herstellers zu beachten.
Darauf achten, dass der Patient den
Herstelleranweisungen des elektro-
chirurgischen Geräts entsprechend elektrisch
vom Operationstisch (und den vorhandenen
HF-Ableitströmen) isoliert ist.
Darauf achten, dass der Patient den

Geräts entsprechend nicht mit Metallteilen
in Berührung kommt, die geerdet sind
oder möglicherweise leicht zu erden sind
(z. B. Operationstisch, Stützen usw.).

die bei hohen Frequenzen einen geringen
Erdwiderstand aufweisen, da unbeabsichtigte
Verbrennungen entstehen können.
Anpassen der drehbaren
Sperrbefestigung
Die drehbare Sperrbefestigung kann auf eine
von sieben indizierten Positionen entlang
eines 60°-Bogens eingestellt werden.
Durch den Druck des Rings auf das Innere
der Sperrbefestigung wird die gewählte
Position beibehalten. Um die Drehung einer
Retraktorklinge während des Verfahrens
anzupassen, die Sperrbefestigung leicht
vom Ring wegziehen, die Retraktorklinge wie
gewünscht in eine andere indizierte Position
bringen und die Sperrbefestigung wieder am
Ring anbringen.

Dit instrument is bestemd voor gebruik

blootlegging in verschillende richtingen
kan worden bewerkstelligd. Raadpleeg

bedieningsinstructies bevat en die als bijsluiter
wordt meegeleverd bij het BOOKWALTER
retractorsysteem dat u in gebruik neemt.

WAARSCHUWINGEN EN
VOORZORGSMAATREGELEN
Met het retractorsysteem kan een grote
mate van kracht op de wondranden en op
weefsels worden uitgeoefend. Ontspan
de retractorbladen telkens kortstondig of
verplaats de bladen, zodat wordt vermeden
dat er op enig punt van het operatiegebied
constante druk wordt uitgeoefend.
Als de operatietafel moet worden gekanteld
naar de zijde waarop de tafelhouder is
bevestigd, is het van belang voldoende
beschermend opvulmateriaal tussen de
houder en het lichaam van de patiënt te
plaatsen. Als het lichaam van de patiënt
langdurig tegen de onbeschermde tafelhouder
wordt gedrukt, kan dat druknecrose of
zenuwverlamming tot gevolg hebben.

Voorzorgsmaatregelen
Zoals voor alle zelfhoudende retractors
geldt, mag ter voorkoming van femorale
zenuwverlamming geen overmatige retractiedruk
op de iliopsoasspier worden uitgeoefend.
Wanneer u in combinatie met een van de
BOOKWALTER retractorsystemen monopolaire
elektrochirurgische instrumenten gebruikt:
raadpleeg de basisregels voor elektrochirurgie
(zie EN 60 601-2-2) en de gebruiksaanwijzing
van de fabrikant. Hierin vindt u specifieke
waarschuwingen en voorwaarden.
Wees zeker dat de patiënt van (hoogfrequente
lekstromen naar de) operatietafel elektrisch
geïsoleerd is volgens de aanwijzingen van de
fabrikant van het elektrochirurgisch instrument.
Verzeker dat de patiënt niet in aanraking komt
met metalen onderdelen die geaard zijn of
die een vrij hoge impedantie m.b.t. de aarde
hebben (bijv. operatietafel, steunen) en volg
de aanwijzingen van de fabrikant van het
elektrochirurgisch instrument.
Vermijd het aanraken van kleine oppervlakken
van voorwerpen die een lage impedantie m.b.t.
de aarde hebben bij hoge frequenties omdat
dit tot ongewenste brandwonden kan leiden.
Het draaibare palradmechanisme
afstellen
Het draaibare palradmechanisme kan worden
afgesteld op een van de 7 standen die langs
een boog van 60 graden zijn geïndexeerd.
De druk van de ring op het inwendige van het
palradmechanisme wordt op de drukwaarde
van de gekozen stand gehandhaafd. U kunt de
rotatie van een retractorblad tijdens de procedure
verstellen door het palradmechanisme enigszins
van de ring weg te trekken, het retractorblad
naar een andere geïndexeerde stand (naar wens)
te draaien en het palradmechanisme op de ring
terug te plaatsen.

De juiste verzorging
Chirurgische instrumenten roesten en
verliezen aan kwaliteit bij blootstelling aan
irriterende chemicaliën en oplossingen.
Niet blootstellen aan zuren, scherpe
reinigingsmiddelen of langdurige bloot-
stelling aan zoutoplossing. Controleer alle
chirurgische instrumenten vóór elk gebruik.

Er is veel geschreven over de juiste
verzorging en hantering van chirurgische
handinstrumenten. Wij zenden u gaarne een

AVVERTENZE E PRECAUZIONI
Il divaricatore può esercitare una grande forza
sui bordi dell’incisione e sui tessuti. Rilasciare
le lame del divaricatore per brevi intervalli di
tempo oppure cambiare posizione alle lame
per evitare di avere una pressione continua su
un unico punto.
Se occorre inclinare il tavolo verso il lato
che supporta il montante, è importante
posizionare un’imbottitura adeguata tra
il montante del tavolo e il paziente. Se il
paziente viene premuto a lungo contro la
barra non imbottita, possono verificarsi
necrosi da pressione o paralisi dei nervi.
Precauzioni
Come per ogni divaricatore autostatico, non
esercitare una pressione di divaricazione
inadeguata sul muscolo ileopsoas, per evitare
una eventuale paralisi nervosa femorale.

Se si utilizza un’apparecchiatura elettro-
chirurgica monopolare durante l’uso di
uno dei nostri divaricatori BOOKWALTER,
consultare le principali norme di utilizzo relative
all’elettrochirurgia (vedere EN 60 601-2-2),
nonché le istruzioni d’uso fornite dal costruttore
relative a specifiche avvertenze e condizioni.
Accertarsi di avere isolato elettricamente il
paziente dalle correnti di dispersione ad alta
frequenza dirette verso il tavolo operatorio,
conformemente alle istruzioni fornite dal
costruttore dell’apparecchiatura elettrochirurgica.
Verificare che il paziente non entri in contatto
con parti metalliche dotate di messa a terra o di
significativa capacitanza verso terra (esempio:
tavolo operatorio, supporti), conformemente
alle istruzioni fornite dal costruttore
dell’apparecchiatura elettrochirurgica.
Evitare che oggetti dotati di bassa impedenza
verso terra a frequenze elevate entrino a
contatto con superfici di piccole dimensioni,
in quanto ciò può causare ustioni involontarie.
Regolazione del meccanismo
a cremagliera rotante
È possibile regolare il meccanismo
a cremagliera rotante in una delle 7 posizioni
indicizzate lungo un arco di 60 gradi.
La pressione dell’anello nella parte interna
del meccanismo a cremagliera mantiene la
posizione selezionata. Durante la procedura,
per regolare la rotazione di una lama del
divaricatore, allontanare lievemente il
meccanismo a cremagliera dall’anello; ruotare
la lama del divaricatore a un’altra posizione
indicizzata come desiderato e riposizionare il
meccanismo a cremagliera dell’anello.

Cura adeguata

Indicaciones
Este instrumental ha sido diseñado para
ser utilizado con uno de nuestros sistemas
retractores BOOKWALTER que proporcionan
una exposición multi-direccional para varias
especialidades quirúrgicas. Refiérase a las
instrucciones de uso detalladas incluidas
en el manual de instrucciones suministrado
con el sistema retractor BOOKWALTER que
se utilizará.

ADVERTENCIAS Y PRECAUCIONES
Se puede ejercer una fuerza importante en
los bordes de la herida y en los tejidos que
se retraen utilizando el sistema retractor.
Libere las hojas del retractor durante breves
períodos de tiempo o cambie de lugar las
hojas para evitar mantener presiones en
cualquier punto.
Es importante colocar una cantidad adecuada
de almohadillas entre el poste de la mesa
y el paciente cuando la mesa se inclina hacia
el lado que sostiene el poste. Debido a la
presión podría ocurrir una necrosis o una
parálisis nerviosa si el paciente es presionado
contra la barra sin almohadillas, durante un
período prolongado.
Precauciones
Como con cualquier otro retractor automático,
se debe tener cuidado de no ejercer una
presión de retracción indebida en el músculo
psoasilíaco para evitar una probable parálisis
nerviosa femoral.

Si utiliza un equipo electroquirúrgico
monopolar al utilizar cualquiera de nuestros
sistemas retractores BOOKWALTER, consulte
las reglas básicas de uso en relación con
la electrocirugía (vea EN 60 601-2-2),
como también las instrucciones de uso
del fabricante en cuanto a condiciones y
advertencias específicas.
Asegúrese de aislar al paciente eléctricamente
de las fugas de corriente de alta frecuencia
de la mesa de operaciones según las
instrucciones proporcionadas por el
fabricante del equipo electroquirúrgico.
Cerciórese de que el paciente no entre en
contacto con piezas o partes metálicas
conectadas a tierra o cuya capacitancia a
tierra sea significativa (por ejemplo: la mesa
de operaciones, los soportes), de acuerdo
con las instrucciones proporcionadas por el
fabricante del equipo electroquirúrgico.
Evite los contactos de áreas pequeñas con
objetos que posean baja impedancia a
tierra, a frecuencias elevadas; de lo contrario
pueden producirse quemaduras no deseadas.
Ajuste del mecanismo de
trinquete rotatorio
El mecanismo de trinquete rotatorio puede
ajustarse a una de 7 posiciones señaladas a
lo largo de un arco de 60 grados. La presión
del anillo sobre el interior del mecanismo de
trinquete mantiene la posición seleccionada.
Para ajustar la rotación de una lámina de
retractor durante el procedimiento, tire
del mecanismo de trinquete alejándolo
ligeramente del anillo; haga girar la lámina
del retractor hasta otra posición señalada
que desee; vuelva a colocar el mecanismo de
trinquete sobre el anillo.

Cuidado adecuado
El instrumental quirúrgico se corroe y se
deteriora si es expuesto a compuestos
químicos y soluciones fuertes. Por lo tanto no
lo exponga a ácidos o detergentes fuertes,
ni lo deje inmerso en suero fisiológico por
períodos prolongados. Inspeccione cada
instrumental quirúrgico antes de cada uso.

ADVERTÊNCIAS E PRECAUÇÕES
O sistema de retracção pode exercer bastante
força sobre os rebordos de uma lesão e sobre
os tecidos. Solte as lâminas do retractor por
curtos períodos de tempo, ou mude-as de
lugar, para evitar uma pressão contínua em
qualquer ponto específico.
Se a mesa for inclinada na direcção do lado
que segura o poste, é importante colocar
um acolchoamento adequado entre o
poste da mesa e o paciente. Se o paciente
for pressionado contra uma barra sem
acolchoamento por muito tempo, o resultado
pode ser uma necrose de pressão ou uma
paralisia nervosa.
Precauções
Como com qualquer retractor auto-retentor,
não exerça pressão de retracção excessiva
no músculo iliopsoas para evitar uma possível
paralisia do nervo femoral.
