Greenberg® Simplicity General Use
NOTE: Once the patient is properly positioned within a skull clamp, the patient is draped in the sterile field. The
entire assembly process is carried out by sterile technique, with the Greenberg® Simplicity components being
applied on top of the sterile drapes covering the skull clamp. The exact Greenberg® assembly configuration
will vary based upon surgeon preference, patient position, and type of procedure.
Step 1—Determining the position of the Greenberg® Simplicity Primary Clamp
The primary clamp may be placed in several different orientations on the skull clamp depending upon the
desired location of the secondary arc. It is recommended that the clamp be mounted such that the ribs of the
skull clamp’s supports are positioned within the horizontal grooves through the jaws of the primary clamp. The
clamp may also be positioned around any two relatively parallel smooth surfaces located on the skull clamp.
The jaws of the clamp must contact as much surface area of the skull clamp as possible. Ensure that the
angles of both primary clamp jaws are tangent to their mounting surfaces on the skull clamp.
Step 2—Mounting the Greenberg® Simplicity Primary Clamp to the skull clamp (Figure 1 & Figure 2)
Position the primary clamp in the desired location and lightly tighten the clamp by turning the vise handle (A)
clockwise until the clamp supports its own weight. While further securing the primary clamp with one hand,
slide the spline of the secondary arc through the primary clamp in the desired orientation. Do not attempt to
rotate the serrated shaft of the secondary arc once inserted into the primary clamp, as doing so could damage
the serrated shaft.
Figure 1: Inserting Secondary Arc
Once the secondary arc is inserted into the primary clamp to the desired amount, fully tighten the
primary clamp vise handle (A) to secure the assembly. Turning the secondary arc universal joint
adjustment lever (B) counterclockwise permits adjustment of the arc. To stabilize the arc in the
desired position, turn the joint lever (B) clockwise until tightened. The slot in the collar of the universal
joint permits 90° positioning of the secondary arc while maintaining stability.
