1. Getting started
T is manual applies to t e following lig ting modules, so for:
LED ControlBasic,
train rear lig ting ZSB-2,
driver´s cab lig ting FB-11, FB-12 and FB-13.
Provided t ere are no ot er details given for particular sections, t e
information given applies to all modules.
How to use this manual
T is manual gives step-by-step instructions for safe and correct fitting and
connecting of t e modules, and operation. Before you start, we advise you
to read t e w ole manual, particularly t e c apter on safety instructions
and t e c ecklist for trouble s ooting. You will t en know w ere to take
care and ow to prevent mistakes w ic take a lot of effort to correct.
Keep t is manual safely so t at you can solve problems in t e future. If
you pass t e module on to anot er person, please pass on t e manual
wit it.
Intended use
T e modules are designed for mounting and use in model railroad
ve icles driven in analogue or digital controlled layouts. Any ot er use
is inappropriate and invalidates any guarantees.
T e modules s ould not be mounted by c ildren under t e age of 14.
Reading, understanding and following t e instructions in t is manual
are mandatory for t e user.

Required materials
For mounting and connecting t e module you need:
an electronic soldering iron (max. 30 Watt) or a regulated soldering
iron wit a fine tip and a soldering iron stand,
a tip-cleaning sponge,
a eat-resistant mat,
a small side cutter and wire stripper,
as necessary a pair of tweezers and long nose pliers,
t in connecting wire.
Wit LED ControlBasic: LEDs for t e ve icle´s lig ting.
If required: a bridging capacitor (> 100 µF) wit a voltage sustaining
capability of
> 16 V (w en connected to a power supply < 18 V) or
> 25 V (w en connected to a power supply > 18 V).

2. Safety instructions
Mechanical hazards
Cut wires can ave s arp ends and can cause serious injuries. Watc
out for s arp edges w en you pick up t e PCB.
Visibly damaged parts can cause unpredictable danger. Do not use
damaged parts: recycle and replace t em wit new ones.
Electrical hazards
Touc ing powered, live components,
touc ing conducting components w ic are live due to malfunction,
s ort circuits and connecting t e circuit to anot er voltage t an
specified,
impermissibly ig umidity and condensation build up
can cause serious injury due to electrical s ock. Take t e following
precautions to prevent t is danger:
Never perform wiring on a powered module.
Assembling and mounting t e kit s ould only be done in closed,
clean, dry rooms. Beware of umidity.
Only use low power for t is module as described in t is manual and
only use certified transformers.
Connect transformers and soldering irons only in approved mains
sockets installed by an aut orised electrician.
Observe cable diameter requirements.
After condensation build up, allow a minimum of 2 ours for
dispersion.
Use only original spare parts if you ave to repair t e kit or t e
ready-built module.

Fire risk
Touc ing flammable material wit a ot soldering iron can cause fire,
w ic can result in injury or deat t roug burns or suffocation.
Connect your soldering iron or soldering station only w en actually
needed. Always keep t e soldering iron away from inflammable
materials. Use a suitable soldering iron stand. Never leave a ot
soldering iron or station unattended.
Thermal danger
A ot soldering iron or liquid solder accidentally touc ing your skin can
cause skin burns. As a precaution:
use a eat-resistant mat during soldering,
always put t e ot soldering iron in t e soldering iron stand,
point t e soldering iron tip carefully w en soldering, and
remove liquid solder wit a t ick wet rag or wet sponge from t e
soldering tip.
Dangerous environments
A working area t at is too small or cramped is unsuitable and can cause
accidents, fires and injury. Prevent t is by working in a clean, dry room
wit enoug freedom of movement.

Other dangers
C ildren can cause any of t e accidents mentioned above because t ey
are inattentive and not responsible enoug . C ildren under t e age of
14 s ould not be allowed to work wit t is kit or t e ready-built
module.
Caution: Little c ildren can swallow small components wit
s arp edges, wit fatal results! Do not allow components to reac
small c ildren.
In sc ools, training centres, clubs and works ops, assembly must be
supervised by qualified personnel.
In industrial institutions, ealt and safety regulations applying to
electronic work must be ad ered to.

3. Safe and correct soldering
Caution: Incorrect soldering can cause dangers t roug fires
and eat. Avoid t ese dangers by reading and following t e directions
given in t e c apter Safety instructions.
Use a small soldering iron wit max. 30 Watt. Keep t e soldering tip
clean so t e eat of t e soldering iron is applied to t e solder point
effectively.
Only use electronic tin solder wit flux.
W en soldering electronic circuits never use soldering-water or
soldering grease. T ey contain acids t at can corrode components
and copper tracks.
Solder quickly: olding t e iron on t e joints longer t an necessary can
destroy components and can damage copper tracks or soldering eyes.
Apply t e soldering tip to t e soldering spot in suc a way t at t e
wire and t e soldering eye are eated at t e same time.
Simultaneously add solder (not too muc ). As soon as t e solder
becomes liquid take it away. Hold t e soldering tip at t e spot for a
few seconds so t at t e solder flows into t e joint, t en remove t e
soldering iron.
T e joint s ould be eld still for about 5 seconds after soldering.
To make a good soldering joint you s ould use a clean and
unoxidised soldering tip. Clean t e soldering tip wit a damp piece of
clot , a damp sponge or a piece of silicon clot .
After soldering c eck (preferably wit a magnifying glass) tracks for
accidental solder bridges and s ort circuits. T is would cause faulty
operation or, in t e worst case, permanent damage. You can remove
excess solder by putting a clean soldering tip on t e spot. T e solder
will become liquid again and flow from t e soldering spot to t e
soldering tip.

4. Operation overview
LED ControlBasic
On t e PCB are integrated a constant current source, a rectifier and
connecting points for a bridging capacitor.
Constant current source: A transistor ensures, t at during operation a
constant current of approximately 20 mA is available. T is allows LEDs
to be connected directly wit out series resistors. T ey ave a constant
brig tness after reac ing t e required minimum voltage, independent
from t e voltage supplied. T e minimum voltage for blue and w ite
LEDs is approx. 4 V, for different-coloured LEDs approx. 3 V.
Rectifier: W en connecting t e PCB to analogue a.c. voltage or digital
voltage (so t e function output of a ve icle decoder) t e integrated
rectifier brings t e LEDs to lig t in bot directions of travel. W en
connecting t e PCB to analogue d.c. voltage an additional bridge
rectifier is required, w en required t at t e LEDs lig t in bot directions
of travel.
Connecting points for a bridging capacitor: Connecting a bridging
capacitor prevents t e connected LEDs from flickering at s ort current
interruptions (e.g. w en passing points). Wit an adequate
dimensioning of t e capacitor t e LEDs can also be supplied in longer
currentless sections.
Connecting LEDs
You can connect one LED or several LEDs in series to one LED
ControlBasic. T e maximum number of LEDs to be connected depends
on t e voltage supplied and t e fluorescent colour of t e LEDs.

Connecting train rear lanterns
W en using t e LED ControlBasic wit t e train rear lig ting (ZSB-2) it is
recommended to connect eac LED (train rear lantern) via a PCB to t e
carriage´s back board. It is possible as well to connect several train
rear lanterns or one train rear lantern and furt er LEDs in series to one
LED ControlBasic.
Driver´s cab lighting
T e driver´s cab lig ting is designed like t e LED ControlBasic, but is
equipped additionally wit a SMD-LED. Like t e LED ControlBasic t ere is
integrated a LED constant current source and it is possible to connect a
bridging capacitor and an additional rectifier. It is not possible to
connect furt er LEDs.
T e LEDs s ine in t e following colours:
FB-11: yellow
FB-12: pure w ite
FB-13: warm w ite

6. Connections
Preliminary work
Before mounting t e PCB into t e ve icle you s ould carry out all
required soldering:
wires for t e connection to t e power supply;
if required: connecting wires for external LEDs;
if required: additional bridging capacitor;
if required: additional rectifier.
W ile soldering avoid eating plastic parts of locomotives and
carriages. Parts mig t go out of s ape!
Connection diagram
Connection to (analogue) a.c. voltage
W en connecting t e PCB to (analogue) a.c. voltage, t e connections´
polarity is not relevant. T e LEDs s ine independently of t e direction
of travel.

Connection to (analogue) d.c. voltage
W en connecting t e PCB to (analogue) d.c. voltage, you ave to
observe t e connections´ polarity. T e LEDs s ine in one direction of
travel only w en connected to (analogue) d.c. voltage. If t ey ave to
work in bot directions of travel, mount an additional bridge rectifier
(e.g. item no. 83-19100-10, not included in delivery) according to t e
connection diagram.
Connection to a decoder output
Connect t e connecting point X4 on t e PCB to t e appropriate output
of t e locomotive or function decoder. Connect t e connecting point X3
to t e return conductor of t e output or t e return conductor for all
outputs.
Alternatively you can connect t e connecting point X3 to t e ve icle´s
ousing ground. Please note t at in t is case t e LEDs flicker due to
principle w en t e decoder is controlled in Motorola format.
Info: Light emitting diodes (LEDs)
W en operated in t e forward direction t e LEDs lig t. T ey are
available in several different versions (differing in colour, size, form,
luminosity, maximum current, voltage limits). T e longer lead of wired
LEDs (not wit LEDs for ZSB-2) is normally t e anode (positive pole).
Wit SMD-LEDs t e cat ode normally is s own by a mark on t e
ousing.
W en using LEDs you always ave to limit t e current conduction (e.g.
by mounting a series resistor), ot erwise t ey will be damaged after a
s ort operating duration. T e LED ControlBasic as an integrated
constant current source limiting t e current at t e output to 20 mA.
T us it is possible to connect LEDs directly (wit out series resistor).

Connecting LEDs
You can connect one LED or several LEDs in series directly (wit out
series resistor) to one LED ControlBasic. T e maximum number of LEDs
you can connect to one PCB depends on t e voltage supplied and t e
fluorescent colour of t e LEDs.
Notice: It is not possible to connect external LEDs to a driver´s cab
lig ting.
Caution: T e legs of a LED s ould not be mounted crosswise to
avoid s ort circuits!

Mounting the train rear lanterns
In order to fix a LED s aped like a train rear lantern safely, it is
recommended to use a PCB of its own for eac LED.
Fix t e PCB on t e inside of t e carriage´s board beside t e oles
needed to feed t roug t e legs of t e LED. Take care to mount t e
connecting points for t e LED directly beside t e oles. Bend t e legs of
t e LED in direction of t e PCB, w en fed t roug t e ole. S orten t e
legs so t at t ey end directly above t e connecting points and t en
solder t em.

Note: T e LED s ould be mounted wit a small distance to t e back of
t e carriage like in reality. Use a matc as a spacer w ile mounting t e
LED.
Info: Electrolytic capacitors
Electrolytic capacitors are often used to store energy. One of t e two
leads is marked wit a minus sign w ic indicates t e mounting
orientation. T e value is given on t e casing.
Electrolytic capacitors are available wit different voltage sustaining
capabilities and capacities. T e maximum capacity only depends on t e
space available for mounting t e capacitor (t e ig er t e capacity t e
bigger t e capacitor). Using an electrolytic capacitor wit a voltage
sustaining capability ig er t an required is always possible.
Connecting a bridging capacitor
In order to supply t e LEDs in currentless parts you can mount an
additional capacitor to t e PCB. It is recommended to c oose a
capacitor wit a capacity as ig as possible. T e minimum voltage
sustaining capability of t e capacitor depends on t e power supply:

Please note: W en connecting t e PCB to a decoder output intended to
be dimmed, you s ould not mount a bridging capacitor.

7. C eck list for troubles ooting
Parts are getting very ot and/or start to smoke.
Disconnect t e system from t e mains immediately!
Possible cause: T e connections to t e power supply are connected
t e wrong round. à C eck t e connection. In t is case t e PCB and
t e connected LEDs are probably damaged irreparably.
T e LED(s) does / do not lig t.
Possible cause: T e connection to t e power supply is interrupted.
à C eck t e connections.
Possible cause: If connected to direct (analogue) voltage t e
connections "+" and "-" are incorrectly connected. à C eck t e
connections.
T e LED(s) only lig ts / lig t in one direction of motion.
Possible cause: T ere is no rectifier mounted in series alt oug
connected to direct voltage. à Mount a rectifier.
Hotline: If problems wit your module occur, our otline is pleased to

Repairs: You can send in a defective module for repair (address on t e
last page). In case of guarantee t e repair is free of c arge for you.
Wit damages not covered by guarantee, t e maximum fee for t e
repair is 50 % of t e sales price according to our valid price list. We
reserve t e rig t to reject t e repairing of a moduel w en t e repair is
impossible for tec nical or economic reasons.
Please do not send in modules for repair c arged to us. In case of
warranty we will reimburse t e forwarding expenses up to t e flat rate
we c arge according to our valid price list for t e delivery of t e
product. Wit repairs not covered by guarantee you ave to bear t e
expenses for sending back and fort .

8. Guarantee bond
For t is product we issue voluntarily a guarantee of 2 years from t e
date of purc ase by t e first customer, but in maximum 3 years after
t e end of series production. T e first customer is t e consumer first
purc asing t e product from us, a dealer or anot er natural or juristic
person reselling or mounting t e product on t e basis of self-
employment. T e guarantee exists supplementary to t e legal warranty
of merc antability due to t e consumer by t e seller.
T e warranty includes t e free correction of faults w ic can be proved
to be due to material failure or factory flaw. Wit kits we guarantee
t e completeness and quality of t e components as well as t e function
of t e parts according to t e parameters in not mounted state. We
guarantee t e ad erence to t e tec nical specifications w en t e kit
as been assembled and t e ready-built circuit connected according to
t e manual and w en start and mode of operation follow t e
instructions.
We retain t e rig t to repair, make improvements, to deliver spares or
to return t e purc ase price. Ot er claims are excluded. Claims for
secondary damages or product liability consist only according to legal
requirements.
Condition for t is guarantee to be valid, is t e ad erence to t e
manual. In addition, t e guarantee claim is excluded in t e following
cases:
if arbitrary c anges in t e circuit are made,
if repair attempts ave failed wit a ready-built module or device,
if damaged by ot er persons,
if damaged by faulty operation or by careless use or abuse.

9. Declaration of conformity
T is product conforms wit t e EC-directives mentioned below
and is t erefore CE certified.
2004/108/EG on electromagnetic. Underlying standards: EN 55014-1
and EN 61000-6-3. To guarantee t e electromagnetic tolerance in
operation you must take t e following precautions:
Connect t e transformer only to an approved mains socket installed
by an aut orised electrician.
Make no c anges to t e original parts and accurately follow t e
instructions, connection diagrams and PCB layout included wit t is
manual.
Use only original spare parts for repairs.
2011/65/EG on t e restriction of t e use of certain azardous
substances in electrical and electronic equipment (ROHS). Underlying
standard: EN 50581.
10. Declarations conforming to t e WEEE directive
T is product conforms wit t e EC-directive 2012/19/EG on
waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
Don´t dispose of t is product in t e ouse refuse, bring it to t e next
recycling bay.
