1. Gettin started
How to use this manual
This manual will help you step by step to mount and commission the
decoder safely and correctly. Before you connect the decoder and put it
into operation, please read this manual completely, particularly the
chapter on safety instructions and the checklist for trouble shootin .
You will then know where to take care and how to prevent mistakes
which take a lot of effort to correct.
Keep this manual safely so that you can solve problems in the future. If
you pass the decoder on to another person, please pass on the manual
with it.
Intended use
The locomotive decoders LD-G-42 and LD-W-42 are desi ned to be
operated accordin to the instructions in this manual in model buildin ,
especially in di ital model railroad layouts. Any other use is
inappropriate and invalidates any uarantees.
The locomotive decoders should not be mounted by children under the
a e of 14.
Readin , understandin and followin the instructions in this manual
are mandatory for the user.

Checking the package contents
Please make sure that your packa e contains:
one or five locomotive decoders, dependin on the version with or
without soldered connectin wires resp. with or without interface
connector;
a CD (containin the manual and further information).
N.B. For production reasons the board is not completely assembled.
This is not a fault.
Required materials
For mountin and connectin decoders without interface you need:
an electronic solderin iron (max. 30 Watt) or a re ulated solderin
iron with a fine tip and a solderin iron stand,
a tip-cleanin spon e,
a heat-resistant mat,
a small side cutter, a wire stripper and a pair of tweezers,
electronic tin solder (0.5 mm diameter).
In order to connect decoders without interface or soldered connectin
wires you will need wire. Recommended cross sections:
> 0,04 mm² for the connections to the function outputs,
> 0,05 mm² for the connections to the motor and current collectors.
If you want to connect a decoder LD-G-42 to an a.c. motor you need:
a load control adapter LRA (item number70-02105 or 70-02106) or
a permanent ma net (e. . item number70-04100, 70-04200 or 70-
04300) or
a motor modification set (e. . item number70-40110, 70-40210 or
70-40310).

In order to brid e short current interruptions you need:
an electrolytic capacitor with a capacity of 100 to 470 µF and a proof
volta e of minimum 35 V or
a buffer circuit, e. .
USV-mini 0.47 (capacity 0.47 F, item no. 70-02215 or 70-02216)
USV mini 1.0 (capacity 1.0 F, item no. 70-02225 or 70-02226)
USV mini 1.5 (capacity 1.5 F, item no 70-02235 or 70-02236).
If you want to release switchin operations automatically, you need:
a reed contact 1 x closin contact (e. . item-no. 84-53110) or
a Hall-sensor (e. . item-no. 84-53210);
permanent ma nets (e. . neodymium ma nets Ø 3mm, thickness
= 2 mm, item-no. 84-53990).
2. Safety instructions
Caution
Inte rated circuits (ICs) are inserted on the decoder. They are
sensitive to static electricity. Do not touch components without first
dischar in yourself. Touchin a radiator or other rounded metal part
will dischar e you.
Mechanical hazards
Cut wires can have sharp ends and can cause serious injuries. Watch
out for sharp ed es when you pick up the PCB.
Visibly dama ed parts can cause unpredictable dan er. Do not use
dama ed parts: recycle and replace them with new ones.

Electrical hazards
Touchin powered, live components,
touchin conductin components which are live due to malfunction,
short circuits and connectin the circuit to another volta e than
specified,
impermissibly hi h humidity and condensation build up
can cause serious injury due to electrical shock. Take the followin
precautions to prevent this dan er:
Never perform wirin on a powered module.
Assemblin and mountin the kit should only be done in closed,
clean, dry rooms. Beware of humidity.
Only use low power for this module as described in this manual and
only use certified transformers.
Connect transformers and solderin irons only in approved mains
sockets installed by an authorised electrician.
Observe cable diameter requirements.
After condensation build up, allow a minimum of 2 hours for dispersion.
Use only ori inal spare parts if you have to repair the kit or the
ready-built module.
Fire risk
Touchin flammable material with a hot solderin iron can cause fire, which
can result in injury or death throu h burns or suffocation. Connect your
solderin iron or solderin station only when actually needed. Always keep
the solderin iron away from inflammable materials. Use a suitable
solderin iron stand. Never leave a hot solderin iron or station unattended.

Thermal danger
A hot solderin iron or liquid solder accidentally touchin your skin can
cause skin burns. As a precaution:
use a heat-resistant mat durin solderin ,
always put the hot solderin iron in the solderin iron stand,
point the solderin iron tip carefully when solderin , and
remove liquid solder with a thick wet ra or wet spon e from the
solderin tip.
Dangerous environments
A workin area that is too small or cramped is unsuitable and can cause
accidents, fires and injury. Prevent this by workin in a clean, dry room
with enou h freedom of movement.
Other dangers
Children can cause any of the accidents mentioned above because they
are inattentive and not responsible enou h. Children under the a e of
14 should not be allowed to mount vehicle decoders.
Caution
Little children can swallow small components with sharp ed es, with
fatal results! Do not allow components to reach small children.
In schools, trainin facilities, hobby and self-help workshops, the
assembly, installation and operation of electronic modules must be
supervised by trained personnel.
In commercial facilities, the relevant accident prevention re ulations
must be observed.

3. Safe and correct solderin
Caution
Incorrect solderin can cause dan ers throu h fires and heat. Avoid
these dan ers by readin and followin the directions iven in the
chapter Safety instructions.
Use a solderin iron with temperature control, which you set to
approx. 300 °C.
Only use electronic solder with a flux.
Never use solderin fluid or solderin rease when solderin
electronic circuits. These contain an acid that destroys components
and conductor paths.
Solder quickly: Solderin for too lon can detach solder pads or
tracks or even destroy components.
Hold the solderin tip on the solderin point so that it touches the
wire and the pad at the same time. Add (not too much) solder
simultaneously. As soon as the solder be ins to flow, remove it from
the solderin point. Then wait a moment for the solder to flow well
before removin the solderin iron from the solderin joint.
Do not move the created solder joint for about 5 seconds.
A clean, non-oxidized solderin tip is essential for a perfect solderin
joint and ood solderin . Therefore, before each solderin , wipe off
excess solder and dirt with a damp spon e, a thick damp cloth or a
silicone wiper.
After solderin , check (preferably with a ma nifyin lass) whether
connections or tracks have been brid ed with solder by mistake. This
can lead to malfunction or destruction of components or, in the
worst case, the complete circuit. You can re-liquefy excess solder
with the clean hot solderin tip. The solder then flows from the
board onto the solderin tip.

4. Operation overview
4.1. Di ital operation
The locomotive decoder is a multiple protocol decoder, that can operate
with and automatically reco nise both DCC or Motorola formats.

4.2. Analo ue mode
The locomotive decoder can also be used in analo ue model railway
layouts run with an A.C. or D.C. speed control. Please note: The use of
an A.C. speed control is factory set. The chan e is only possible by
repro rammin the CV / the re ister with a di ital control unit, so not in
pure analo ue operation.
Caution
Old analo ue drivin transformers (e. . models in a blue housin
from Märklin**) are not suitable for use with di ital decoders in
analo ue operation! These transformers have been desi ned for the
older supply volta e of 220 V and, due to construction, enerate very
hi h excess volta e impulses when chan in the drivin direction.
When usin them with the modern supply volta e of 230 V too hi h
excess volta e impulses can occur, dama in electronic parts on the
decoder. For that reason only use drivin transformers desi ned for a
net volta e of 230 V.
Automatic analogue recognition
When puttin the vehicle on the rails the decoder reco nizes
automatically if it is run in analo ue or di ital mode and sets the
correspondin operation mode. The automatic analo ue reco nition can
be switched off, e. .
if the decoder suddenly switches to analo ue mode in di ital
operation (e. . as a result of interference volta es whose cause is
difficult to localise);
if a value for the Packet Time Out is pro rammed to perform a
forced stop in case of track volta e failure or shutdown.

Switching the function outputs
Switchin the function outputs on or off is not possible in analo ue
mode. The outputs can be pro rammed with the di ital central unit so
that they are either switched on or off in analo ue mode. The effects
set for the outputs are active in analo ue mode as well.
Outputs that are switched dependin on the direction are switched on
or off in analo ue mode accordin to the direction of travel. When
operated in analo ue d.c. layouts this applies only to lamps or accessories
where the return conductor is connected to the decoder´s common return
conductor for all function outputs.

4.3. Overload protection
The LD-G-42 and LD-W-42 locomotive decoders have overload
protection which protects them from dama e if the permissible total
current is exceeded or if the motor output is short-circuited (the
maximum form of an overload). If an overload is detected, the motor
that normally requires the most current is switched off.
When the motor is switched off, activated li hts and other accessories
remain on and the decoder continues to react to switchin commands
for the outputs. After about 5 seconds the motor is switched on a ain.
If the overload still exists, it is switched off a ain immediately. By
settin a lower speed level, the load can be reduced, if necessary, to
such an extent that the overload protection no lon er responds and the
locomotive can be moved to an accessible location for closer
examination and troubleshootin .
The response threshold of the overload protection can be adjusted by
chan e of the time period in which an overload occurs before the
motor is switched off ("short-circuit duration") and/or
chan e in sensitivity, i.e. the ma nitude of the overload at which the
overload is detected ("short-circuit sensitivity").
Overload at an output
In case of a short-circuit at one output or if the maximum current at
one of the outputs is exceeded, the overload protection of the decoder
is ineffective as lon as the total current of the decoder is not also
exceeded. The output in question will be dama ed.

Attention
By lowerin the overload response threshold, the influence of short-
term interference volta es from the motor or connected consumers is
to be reduced. This prevents the motor from bein switched off
althou h the permissible total current has not been exceeded. Before
lowerin the response threshold, the motor current must always be
measured and the proper functionin of the motor and the ear unit
checked.
Attention
When a short circuit occurs that bypasses components on the decoder
either to each other or to track volta e, the overload protection is not
effective. Examples:
contact between the decoder and the rails or metal parts of the
vehicle;
contact between not-isolated decoder connectin wires and the rails
or metal parts of the vehicle;
contact between accessories connected to the common return
conductor of the decoder and the rails or metal parts of the vehicle.
Attention
Malfunctions of the locomotive motor (e. . the so-called "sparkin of
the brushes") can cause extreme interference current, possibly
dama in components on the decoder. The decoder´s overload
protection is without effect with this extremely hi h current.

4.4. Motor control
Pulse width modulation
The different decoder types are desi ned to optimally control their
particular fittin motor types.

Load control
The LD-G-42 for DC motors has a load control, the LD-W-42 for AC
motors does not have this function.
The load control influences the motor volta e to keep the locomotive
with a set speed level at constant velocity, independent of additional
loads (e. . runnin up a radient, coupled carria es).
It is possible to switch on and off the load control by varyin a CV-
variable of the decoder. The parameters of the load control may be
altered, in order to adapt the decoder to the motor´s individual
characteristics.
Parameters of the load control
The load control is determined by three parameters (KP, KI and KD)
which have to be coordinated in order to achieve optimal drivin
characteristics. Each of the load control parameters is assi ned to a
confi uration variable.
KP The proportional component of the load control ensures the
difference between the set and the present value bein as small as
possible. It cannot have the value "0" at any time. This component
affects the basic speed. In case the set value is too small the

locomotive runs too slowly. In case the set value is too hi h the
locomotive stutters while movin .
KI The inte ral component of the load control ensures the remainin
difference between the set and the present value is reduced to 0 and so
for the correction of very small diver ences. If the set value is too hi h
the locomotive stutters massively while movin .
KD The differential component of the load control ensures that the
control is not converted too quickly. If the set value is too low, the
locomotive stutters. If it is too hi h, the locomotive rocks while movin .
Gain factor
The basis for the influence of the load control on the motor volta e is
the volta e returned by the motor durin the measurin period.
Dependin on the individual characteristics, these values may be too
hi h or too low. The effects are that the vehicle reaches its maximum
speed already at a speed level below the hi hest speed level or does
not reach it at all at the hi hest speed level. To compensate for these
effects, the values sent by the en ine can be increased or decreased by
adjustin the amplification factor.
Velocity characteristic
By adjustin the startin , middle and maximum speed, the decoder can
be adapted to the drivin characteristics of the motor and the
characteristic drivin speeds of the locomotive type. From these 3
points the decoder enerates a speed characteristic curve which is
linear between the startin and middle speed and between middle and
maximum speed.
When the speed level mode is set to 28 speed levels, it is possible to
assi n any motor volta e to all of the 28 speed levels as an alternative
to the linear velocity characteristic. This allows the pro rammin of a
velocity characteristic which adjusts the individual drivin characteristics
of the motor. The set values are saved in the alternative velocity table.

Shunting gear
It is possible to switch into the shuntin ear mode via a function key
(in state of delivery F3), when so pro rammed. In the shuntin ear
mode, the velocity of all speed levels is reduced to approx. 50 %
compared to the set velocity.
Acceleration and brake delay
It is possible to pro ram the acceleration and brake delay individually
via the central unit. When so pro rammed, it can be switched on and
off with a function key (in state of delivery F4).
4.5. Automated processes
The control software in the locomotive decoder allows you to automate
procedures and to reduce complex processes to one keystroke.
Shunting function
Shuntin ear and shuntin li ht can be assi ned to the same function
key. Then, when switchin to shuntin ear (and the associated
reduction in speed), the shuntin li ht (white front and rear li htin ) is
automatically switched on and the direction-dependent li htin is
switched off.

4.6. Function outputs
The decoder has four function outputs (F0f, F0r, AUX1, AUX2) with a
maximum current of 300 mA each for the connection of additional
accessories (e. . li htin , smoke enerator, electrical couplin ). Note:
The maximum total current of the decoder (includin motor) is
1,500 mA.
Function mapping according to RCN-227
Assi nin the functions to the outputs follows RailCommunity standard
RCN-227. It is possible to assi n one or several outputs to each
function (F0 to F28, seperately for forward and backward motion for
each function). In addition, it is possible to assi n another function as
an "OFF"-switch to the functions.
This mode of function mappin allows to implement special features, e. .:
Switchin on and off dependin on the direction of travel.
Shuntin li ht: When switchin to shuntin operation the si nals for
shuntin locomotive are switched on and those for standard
operation switched off.
Switchin off the locomotive´s tailli hts when connectin wa ons.

The flashin frequency is set separately for each

The outputs first receive full volta e for a
maximum of approx. 25.5 seconds and are then
switched off. The kick time is set separately for all
outputs.
Example of use: Some types of electrical couplin s
require full volta e to decouple. However, the
volta e should be switched off after uncouplin in
order to protect the couplin s.

4.7. Tri erin the actions
The function outputs are switched on and off and the shuntin ear
and acceleration/deceleration are (de)activated:
the assi ned function(s) and / or
automatically via the switchin input. The switchin input is tri ered
via external contacts, e. . via reed contact or Hall sensors in
combination with permanent ma nets in the track.
Assignment of the actions to the functions (Function Mapping)
The assi nment of the actions controlled by the decoder to the
functions is freely selectable, each separately for forward and reverse
travel.

4.8. Feedback with RailCom®
The locomotive decoders LD-G-42 and LD-W-42 are RailCom
transmitters and and meet the requirements of the RailCommunity
standard RCN-217 "RailCom DCC feedback protocol" (status
01.12.2019) for mobile decoders (vehicle decoders). RCN-217 has been
published on:

Sendin RailCom messa es is possible in layouts with a DCC si nal on
the rails only. It is not possible to use the RailCom-function in a pure
Motorola environment.
