1. Getting sta ted
How to use this manual
This manual gives step-by-step inst uctions fo safe and co ect
assembly of the kit and fitting and connecting of the eady-built
module, and ope ation. Befo e you sta t, we advise you to ead the
whole manual, pa ticula ly the chapte on safety inst uctions and the
checklist fo t ouble shooting. You will then know whe e to take ca e
and how to p event mistakes which take a lot of effo t to co ect.
Keep this manual safely so that you can solve p oblems in the futu e. If
you pass the kit o the eady-built module on to anothe pe son, please
pass on the manual with it.
Intended use
The switching decode s SD-34 and SD-34.2 a e designed to be
ope ated acco ding to the inst uctions in this manual in digital model
ailway layouts. Any othe use is inapp op iate and invalidates any
gua antees.
The switching decode s should not be assembled o mounted by
child en unde the age of 14.
Reading, unde standing and following the inst uctions in this manual
a e mandato y fo the use .
Caution:
The switching decode s SD-34 and SD-34.2 contain integ ated ci cuits.
These a e ve y sensitive to static elect icity. Do not touch components
without fi st discha ging you self. Touching a adiato o othe
g ounded metal pa t will discha ge you.

Checking the package contents
Please make su e that you package contains:
one kit SD-34, containing the components listed in the pa ts list and
one PCB o
one eady-built module SD-34 o SD-34.2 o
one eady-built module SD-34 o SD-34.2 in a housing (complete
unit)
SD-34 only: one jumpe fo p og amming the add ess
a CD (containing the manual and fu the info mation)
Required materials
Fo assembling the kit you need:
an elect onic solde ing i on (max. 30 Watt) o a egulated solde ing
i on with a fine tip and a solde ing i on stand,
a tip-cleaning sponge,
a heat- esistant mat,
a small side cutte and wi e st ippe ,
as necessa y a pai of tweeze s and long nose plie s,
elect onic tin solde (0,5 mm. diamete ).
In o de to connect the module you need wi e. Recommended
diamete s: > 0,25 mm² fo all connections.

2. Safety inst uctions
Mechanical hazards
Cut wi es can have sha p ends and can cause se ious inju ies. Watch
out fo sha p edges when you pick up the PCB.
Visibly damaged pa ts can cause unp edictable dange . Do not use
damaged pa ts: ecycle and eplace them with new ones.
Electrical hazards
Touching powe ed, live components,
touching conducting components which a e live due to malfunction,
sho t ci cuits and connecting the ci cuit to anothe voltage than
specified,
impe missibly high humidity and condensation build up
can cause se ious inju y due to elect ical shock. Take the following
p ecautions to p event this dange :
Neve pe fo m wi ing on a powe ed module.
Assembling and mounting the kit should only be done in closed,
clean, d y ooms. Bewa e of humidity.
Only use low powe fo this module as desc ibed in this manual and
only use ce tified t ansfo me s.
Connect t ansfo me s and solde ing i ons only in app oved mains
sockets installed by an autho ised elect ician.
Obse ve cable diamete equi ements.
Afte condensation build up, allow a minimum of 2 hou s fo
dispe sion.
Use only o iginal spa e pa ts if you have to epai the kit o the
eady-built module.

Fire risk
Touching flammable mate ial with a hot solde ing i on can cause fi e,
which can esult in inju y o death th ough bu ns o suffocation.
Connect you solde ing i on o solde ing station only when actually
needed. Always keep the solde ing i on away f om inflammable
mate ials. Use a suitable solde ing i on stand. Neve leave a hot
solde ing i on o station unattended.
Thermal danger
A hot solde ing i on o liquid solde accidentally touching you skin can
cause skin bu ns. As a p ecaution:
use a heat- esistant mat du ing solde ing,
always put the hot solde ing i on in the solde ing i on stand,
point the solde ing i on tip ca efully when solde ing, and
emove liquid solde with a thick wet ag o wet sponge f om the
solde ing tip.

A wo king a ea that is too small o c amped is unsuitable and can cause
accidents, fi es and inju y. P event this by wo king in a clean, d y oom
with enough f eedom of movement.
Other dangers
Child en can cause any of the accidents mentioned above because they
a e inattentive and not esponsible enough. Child en unde the age of
14 should not be allowed to wo k with this kit o the eady-built
module.
Caution:
Little child en can swallow small components with sha p edges, with
fatal esults! Do not allow components to each small child en.

In schools, t aining cent es, clubs and wo kshops, assembly must be
supe vised by qualified pe sonnel.
In indust ial institutions, health and safety egulations applying to
elect onic wo k must be adhe ed to.
3. Safe and co ect solde ing
Caution:
Inco ect solde ing can cause dange s th ough fi es and heat. Avoid
these dange s by eading and following the di ections given in the
chapte Safety instructions.
Use a small solde ing i on with max. 30 Watt o a egulated
solde ing i on.
Only use elect onic tin solde with flux.
When solde ing elect onic ci cuits neve use solde ing-wate o
solde ing g ease. They contain acids that can co ode components
and coppe t acks.
Inse t the component connecting pins of into the PCB´s holes as fa
as possible without fo ce. The components should be close to the
PCB´s su face.
Obse ve co ect pola ity o ientation of the pa ts befo e solde ing.
Solde quickly: holding the i on on the joints longe than necessa y
can dest oy components and can damage coppe t acks o solde ing
eyes.
Apply the solde ing tip to the solde ing spot in such a way that the
pa t and the solde ing eye a e heated at the same time.
Simultaneously add solde (not too much). As soon as the solde
becomes liquid take it away. Hold the solde ing tip at the spot fo a
few seconds so that the solde flows into the joint, then emove the
solde ing i on.
Do not move the component fo about 5 seconds afte solde ing.

To make a good solde ing joint you must use a clean and unoxidised
solde ing tip. Clean the solde ing tip with a damp piece of cloth, a
damp sponge o a piece of silicon cloth.
Cut the wi es afte solde ing di ectly above the solde ing joint with a
side cutte .
Afte placing the pa ts, please double check fo co ect pola ity.
Check the PCB t acks fo solde b idges and sho t ci cuits c eated by
accident. This would cause faulty ope ation o , in the wo st case,
damage. You can emove excess solde by putting a clean solde ing
tip on the spot. The solde will become liquid again and flow f om
the solde ing spot to the solde ing tip.

4. Ope ation ove view
The switching decode s SD-34 and SD-34.2 a e designed to cont ol
accesso ies, switched on and off o changed ove via a change-ove
elay, e.g.
lightings,
light signals,
moto - un points with tape shut-off.
With one switching decode you can cont ol a maximum of fou
accesso ies independent of each othe .
riving the decoder via accessory decoder commands
The outputs of the decode s SD-34 and SD-34.2 a e ope ated via
accesso y decode commands in DCC o Moto ola fo mat, sent f om the
cent al unit to one of the fou accesso y decode ´s add esses. The
decode s automatically ecognize the commands´data fo mat. It is
possible to switch the outputs via mixed DCC and Moto ola commands
as well as to ope ate one output alte nately in DCC and Moto ola
fo mat.
Operation via vehicle decoder commands ( S -34.2 only)
You can use a vehicle decode add ess (locomotive add ess) to ope ate
the switching decode SD-34.2 instead of an accesso y decode add ess
(points add ess). The 4 outputs of the decode a e switched via the
function keys F1 to F4 then. This allows to use the SD-34.2 in
combination with DCC cont ol units not designed fo cont olling points
add esses.

Programming
Using a DCC cent al unit the decode add ess and the decode ´s
featu es can be defined by p og amming the configu ation va iables
(CV). It is also possible to set the add ess by using a p og amming
jumpe (SD-34) o a push-button switch (SD-34.2).
When using a Moto ola cent al unit the (accesso y) decode add ess
has to be set with a p og amming jumpe (SD-34) o a push-button
switch (SD-34.2). Changing the othe decode ´s featu es o assigning a
locomotive add ess is neithe necessa y no possible in layouts un in
Moto ola fo mat only.
Feedback via RailCom
The switching decode s SD-34 and SD-34.2 a e RailCom compatible, i.e.
the decode s a e able to pass the RailCom messages via the ails to
special RailCom detecto s. This allows e.g. to feedback the co ect
pe fo mance of setting and switching commands.
Power supply
The switching decode s SD-34 and SD-34.2 can eithe be supplied by
the cent al unit o a booste . In o de to elease the digital elect ic
ci cuit it is also possible to supply the decode s by a t ansfo me of
thei own instead.

6. Assembling the kit (SD-34)
You can skip this pa t if you have pu chased a eady-built module o device.
Preparation
Put the so ted components in f ont of you on you wo kbench.
The sepa ate elect onic components have the following special featu es
you should take into account in assembling:
Resistors
Resisto s educe cu ent.
The value of esisto s fo smalle powe atings is indicated
th ough colou ings. Eve y colou stands fo anothe
figu e. Ca bon film esisto s have 4 colou ings. The 4th
ing (given in b ackets he e) indicates the tole ance of the
esisto (gold = 5 %, silve = 10 %).

Ceramic capacitors
Among othe things ce amic capacito s a e used fo
filte ing inte fe ence voltages o as f equency dete mining
pa ts. Ce amic capacito s a e not pola ized.
No mally they a e ma ked with a th ee-digit numbe which
indicates the value coded. The numbe 104 co esponds to
the value 100 nF.
Electrolytic capacitors
Elect olytic capacito s a e often used to sto e ene gy. In
cont ast to ce amic capacito s they a e pola ized. The
value is given on the casing.
Elect olytic capacito s a e available with diffe ent voltage
sustaining capabilities. Using an elect olytic capacito with
a voltage sustaining capability highe than equi ed is
always possible.
iodes and Zener diodes
Diodes allow the cu ent to pass th ough in one di ection
only (fo wa d di ection), simultaneously the voltage is
educed by 0,3 to 0,8 V. Exceeding of the limit voltage
always will dest oy the diode, and allow cu ent to flow in
the eve se di ection.
Zene diodes a e used fo limiting voltages. In cont ast to "no mal"
diodes they a e not dest oyed when the limit voltage is exceeded.
The diode type is p inted on the body.

Light emitting diodes (LE s)
When ope ated in the fo wa d di ection the LEDs light.
They a e available in seve al diffe ent ve sions (diffe ing in
colou , size, fo m, luminosity, maximum cu ent, voltage
limits).
Light emitting diodes should always be connected via a
se ies esisto which limits the cu ent and p events failu e.
Transistors
T ansisto s a e cu ent amplifie s which conve t low signals into
st onge ones. The e a e seve al types in diffe ent package fo ms
available. The type designation is p inted on the component.
T ansisto s fo a low powe ating (e.g. BC types) have a
package in fo m of a half zylinde (SOT-Gehäuse).
The th ee pins of bipola t ansisto s (e.g. BC types) a e
called basis, emitte and collecto (abb eviated with the
lette s B, E, C in the ci cuit diag am).
Integrated circuits (ICs)
Depending on the type, ICs fulfil va ious tasks. The most
common housing fo m is the so-called "DIL"-housing, f om
which 4, 6, 8, 14, 16, 18 o mo e "legs" (pins) a e
a anged along the long sides.
ICs a e sensitive to damage du ing solde ing (heat,
elect ostatic cha ging). Fo that eason in the place of the
ICs IC sockets a e solde ed in, in which the ICs a e
inse ted late .
Microcontrollers
Mic ocont olle s a e ICs, which a e individually p og ammed fo the
pa ticula application. The p og ammed cont olle a e only available
f om the manufactu e of the ci cuit belonging to it.

Opto couplers
Opto couple s a e ICs, which wo k simila to lase beam switches. They
combine in one housing a light emitting diode and a photo t ansisto . Thei
task is the t ansmission of info mation without galvanic connection. They
a e in a DIL-housing with at least 4 pins.
Relays
Relays a e elect onic switches, depending on thei position the one o
othe (inte nal) connection is closed. The mode of ope ation of
monostable elays can be compa ed to that of a push-button switch,
i.e. the connection is only closed as long as the voltage is applicated.
Bistable elays keep thei status afte switching – compa able to a
switch.
Relays which combine two switches in one housing a e common as well
(sho tly 2xUM). The switching between the two connections can be
hea d clea ly because of the esulting clicking sound.
Terminal strips
Te minal st ips a e solde -in sc ew-type te minals. They p ovide a
solde -f ee and safe connection of the cables to the ci cuit, which can
still be sepa ated any time.

Assembly
P oceed acco ding to the o de given in the list below. Fi st solde the
components on the solde side of the PCB and then cut the excess
wi es with the side cutte . Follow the inst uctions on solde ing in
section 3.
Caution: Seve al components have to be mounted acco ding to
thei pola ity. When solde ing these components the w ong way
ound, they can be damaged when you connect the powe . In the
wo st case the whole ci cuit can be damaged. At the best, a w ongly
connected pa t will not function.

The negative end of the diodes is ma ked with
a ing. This is shown in the PCB layout.

Inse t the ICs into the solde ed socket.
Do not touch the ICs without fi st discha ging
you self by touching a adiato o othe
g ounded metal pa ts.
Do not bend the "legs" when inse ting them
into the sockets. Check that the ma kings on
the PCB, the socket and the IC show to the
same di ection.
Performing a visual check
Pe fo m a visual check afte the assembly of the module and emove
faults if necessa y:
Remove all loose pa ts, wi e ends o d ops of solde f om the PCB.
Remove all sha p wi e ends.
Check that solde contacts which a e close to each othe a e not
unintentionally connected to each othe . Risk of sho t ci cuit!
Check that all components a e pola ised co ectly.
When you have emedied all faults, go on to the next pa t.
