1. INTRODUCTION
1.01 Yoursatisfactionandsafetyareimportant
toThermoandacompleteunderstandingofthis
unitisnecessarytoattaintheseobjectives.
1.02 Astheuserofthisapparatus,youhave
the responsibility to understand the proper
functionandoperationalcharacteristicsofyour
bath. This instruction manual should be
thoroughlyreadandalloperatorsgivenadequate
training before attempting to place this unit in
service. Awarenessofthestatedcautionsand
warnings,andcompliancewithrecommended
operating parameters -- together with
maintenancerequirements--areimportantfor
safeandsatisfactoryoperation. Theunitshould
beusedforitsintendedapplication;alterations
or modifications will VOID THE WARRANTY.
WARNING
Asaroutinelaboratoryprecaution,always
wearsafetyglasseswhenworkingwiththis
apparatus.
CAUTION
The benchtop must be rigid and strong
enough to comfortably support the weight
of the unit when filled with water.

In addition, this apparatus is not designed for
useinClassI,IIorIIIlocationsasdefinedbythe
NationalElectricalCode.
2. UNPACKING AND DAMAGE
2.01 Saveallpackingmaterialuntilunitisput
into service. This merchandise was carefully
packedandthoroughlyinspectedbeforeleaving
our factory.
2.02 Responsibility for safe delivery was
assumedbythecarrieruponacceptanceofthe
shipment;therefore,claimsforlossordamage
sustained in transit must be made upon the
carrierbytherecipientasfollows:
1. Visible Loss or Damage: Note any
external evidence of loss or damage on the
freightbill,orexpressreceipt,andhaveitsigned
by the carrier's agent. Failure to adequately
describe such external evidence of loss or
damage may result in the carrier's refusing to
honoryourdamageclaim. Theformrequiredto
filesuchclaimwillbe suppliedbythe carrier.
2. Concealed Loss or Damage:
Concealed loss or damage means loss or
damagewhichdoesnotbecomeapparentuntil
the merchandise has been unpacked and
inspected. Shouldeitheroccur,makeawritten
requestforinspectionbycarrier'sagentwithin
fifteen(15)daysofthedeliverydate;thenfilea
claim with the carrier since the damage is the
carrier'sresponsibility.
2.03 If you follow the above instructions
carefully, we will guarantee our full support of
your claim to be compensated for loss or
concealeddamage.

3. GENERAL INFORMATION
3.01 ThePrecisionColiformIncubatorBathis
aspecialpurposebathdesignedfortwospecific
tests.
1. Determinationoffecalcoliformcontentof
waterorsewage samples byincubation at
35.0o,41.5o,or44.5oCwithuniformityof
±0.2oC, as specified by the American
PublicHealthAssociation (APHA),Ameri-
can Water Works Association (AWWA),
andWaterPollutionControlFederation
(WPCF)in"Standard Methodsfor the
ExaminationofWaterandWastewater",
13thedition(1971),byeitherthemem-
branefiltermethods,MPNmethod,or
definedsubstratetechnology(DST).
2. DeterminationofE. coli contentoffood
samplesbyincubationat45.5oC,with
uniformityof + 0.2oC,asspecifiedby the
AOACin "OfficialMethods ofAnalysis of
the AOAC", 11th edition (1970)
3.02 The four user-selectable operating
temperatureshavebeenfactorypresetandare
precisely maintained by the microprocessor
controller.Thecentrifugalcirculatingpumpruns
at a constant speed as soon as the bath is
turned on. A safety hydraulic thermostat is
included as an over-temperature protection
device. CAUTION
TO AVOID BUILD-UP OF MINERAL
DEPOSITS AND TO PREVENT
CORROSION, USE ONLY DISTILLED
WATER IN THE BATH.
WARNING
USING CHLORINATED TAP WATER OR
ADDITIVES THAT CONTAIN CHLORINE
WILL VOID THE MANUFACTURER'S
WARRANTY. SIMILARLY, HIGH PURITY
(DEIONIZED) WATER THAT DOES NOT
FALL WITH IN RESISTIVITY RANGE OF
50K TO 1M OHM AND PH RANGE OF 7
TO9WILLALSOVOID THE WARRANTY.

3.03 The proportional integral temperature
controlcoupledwithcirculationprovidedby the
centrifugal pump allows precise temperature
control, (factory precalibrated) when used in
conjunctionwiththesuppliedgablecover. The
gable cover helps the bath hold maximum
stabilityandreduceswaterlossbyevaporation.
CAUTION
AS WATER BATHS ARE OPERATED,
ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER TEMPERATURES,
CONDENSATION FORMS ON THE
UNDERSIDEOFTHEGABLECOVER.THE
AMOUNT OF CONDENSATION CAN BE
CONSIDERABLE. CARE SHOULD BE
EXERCISED WHEN REMOVING THE
COVER SO THAT WATER WILL FALL
BACK INTO THE BATH CHAMBER, AND
NOT ON THE BATH SURFACE. THE
COVER SHOULD BE PLACED UPSIDE
DOWN WHEN REMOVED TO MAINTAIN A
DRY WORK AREA.

with distilled water or water solutions, such as
water/ethyleneglycolwithacorrosioninhibitor
added.Thebodyismadefromgalvanizedsteel
andispaintedforaddedprotection. Astainless
steelgablecoverisalsoprovidedwiththebath.
3.05 The 230-volt units are identical in
appearancetothe120voltunits.

5. INSTALLATION
WARNING
INSTALLATION SHOULD BE COMPLETED
ONLY BY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL.
5.01 Location-Themostuniformoperating
conditionswillbeobtained by placingthe bath
onalevelsurfaceinanarearemotefromdrafts,
ventilatingoutlets,radiators,and other rapidly
changingambientconditions.
Environmental Conditions-
Thisinstrumentisdesignedtooperatesafely
underthefollowingconditions:
• IndoorUseOnly
• Temperature: 5° to 40°C
• MaximumRelativeHumidity:80%for
temperaturesto22°C
• MaximumAltitude2000meters
Maximumperformanceisassuredacrossthe
followingtemperaturerange:
• 15ºC to 45ºC
5.02 Electrical Connections -
IMPORTANT
FOR PERSONAL SAFETY, THIS
APPARATUS MUST BE PROPERLY
GROUNDED.
1. The power cord provided on this unit is
equipped with a three-prong (grounding) plug
which mates with standard three-prong
grounding wall receptacle to minimize the
possibility of electric shock hazard from this
apparatus. Ifindoubttheusershouldhavethe
wallreceptacleandcircuitcheckedbyaqualified
electrician to make sure the receptacle can
provide adequate current and is properly
grounded.
2. Where a standard two-prong wall
receptacle is encountered, it is the personal
responsibilityandobligationoftheusertohave
itreplacedwithaproperlygroundedthree-prong
wall receptacle. Do not, under any
circumstances, cut or remove the third
(ground)prongfromthepowercord. Donot
useatwo-prongadapterplug.

5.03 Determinethetotalamountofcurrent
beingusedbyotherapparatusconnectedto
thecircuitthatwillbeusedforthisapparatus.
Itiscriticalthattheaddedcurrentdemand
(seenameplate)ofthisandotherequipment
usedon the samecircuitdoes notexceed the
ratingofthefuseorcircuitbreaker.
CAUTION
-BE SURE THAT THE POWER SUPPLY IS
OF THE SAME VOLTAGE AS THAT
SPECIFIED ON THE NAMEPLATE.
-BE SURE THAT THE WALL RECEP-
TACLE (MAINS DISCONNECT) IS
READILY IDENTIFIABLE AND EASILY
REACHED TO DISCONNECT THE UNIT
FROM THE POWER SOURCE.
6. EXPLANATIONOFCONTROLS
6.01 Power Switch - The power switch
locatedonthelowerleft-handsideofthe
controlpanelprovidespowerfortheentire
unit.Thepowerswitchcontrolsallelectric
powertothetemperaturecontrolandthe
pump. Thepumpstartswhenthepoweris
turnedonandrunsatafixedspeed.
6.02 Hi-Limit Thermostat - The highlimit
thermostatislocatedimmediatelytothe
rightofthepowerswitchonthelowerright
handcornerofthecontrolpanel.Thehigh
limitisanadjustablecontrolusedtoprevent
thermalrunawayintheeventthattheprimary
controlfails.
6.03 Control Panel - The Control Panel
providesa digitalreadoutof temperature
readings, heater "ON" indicator, andpro-
vides keys for user to make their desired
selections.
1. LED Display - Four digits are used to
displaytheactual,set,andcalibrated
valuesfortemperature.
2. Heater On Lamp - The "HEATER ON"
lampis illuminatedwhen power isapplied
totheheater.
3. Calibrate Key -Thiskeyputsthe unitin
calibrate mode to match a traceable
thermometertotheactualtemperature
display.
4. Temperature Selection Keys - These
keys are used to increase or decrease
thesetpointand/orcalibratetemperature
selections.
5. Enter Key - The enter key is used to
storeanewsetpointorcalibrationvalue.

7. OPERATION
CAUTION
EXERCISE CARE WHEN USING ACIDIC OR
CAUSTIC SOLUTIONS AS THEY WILL ATTACK
THEGALVANIZEDSTEELBATHBODYIFSPILLED
INTOTHEBATH.IFSPILLSDOOCCUR,THEBATH
LIQUIDSHOULDBEIMMEDIATELYDRAINEDAND
THE UNIT THOROUGHLY FLUSHED. SPILLS AND
CONDENSATION SHOULD BE CLEANED/
REMOVED FROM ALL METAL SURFACES AFTER
EACH USE.
WARNING
EXPLOSION, IMPLOSION OR THE RELEASE OF
TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE GASES RISING FROM
MATERIAL BEING HEATED IS THE SOLE
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE USER.
7.01 Whenfillingthebathwithwater,allowance
must be made for the displacement of water
upon immersion of samples. The maximum
liquidlevelshould be1inchbelowthetopofthe
pan. Do not use deionized water.
7.02 Toconserveenergy,reduceevaporation
andincreasetemperaturecontrolaccuracy,use
thegablecoverprovided.Donotusealuminum
foilasacover;asitmaycausecorrosiondueto
anelectrochemicalreaction.
1. Add distilled water to bath. Position the
temperature probe tip 4 1/2" from the top
edge of pan. Adjust O-ring if necessary.
Probemustalwaysbeimmersedinthepan
duringoperation. Water levelshouldbe at
least1-1/2inchesabovethetoppumpoutlet
for adequate water circulation. The water
level should be approximately 1 to 1 1/2
inchesfromthetopofthebathwhenthebath
isfullyloaded.
2. Power up: Depress the power switch lo-
cated at the lower left hand corner of the
bath.Theunitisfullyoperationaluponappli-
cation of power and the display will read
actualbathtemperature.
3. ToSelecttheOperatingTemperature:
Model 2860 has four user selectable
temperature setpoints of 35.0, 41.5, 44.5
and45.5°C. Toselectthedesiredoperating
temperature,presstheVordownWbutton
until the desired temperature is displayed.
PressEnterbuttontoacceptthenewsetpoint.
Thedisplaywillflash,indicatingthatthenew
settinghasbeenentered. Whentheflashing
stops, the display returns to actual bath
temperature.
4. To Calibrate:
a. Calibrationshouldbeperformedtomatch
a stable bath's actual temp display to a
calibratedthermometer.
b. Press CALIBRATE button once. Display
flashes to indicate Calibrate mode.
c. Press Vor Wbutton until the display
matches the readout on a certified ther-
mometer.PressENTERtosetnewvalue.
d. IfENTERisnotpressed,thenewvaluewill
not be set and display will return to the
previouslydisplayedtemperature.
e. Displayshouldnowmatchyourcalibrated
thermometer. The unit will stabilize
automaticallytothesettemperature.
Periodic Safety Check
TesttheoperationoftheHi-Limitthermostat,as
follows,everythreemonths.
1. LocatetheHi-Limitthermostatadjustment
totherightofthepowerswitch.
2. Whendelivered,thethermostatadjustment
isturnedfullyclockwise.Inthisposition,
theHi-limitlightisOFF.
3. Afterthebathtemperaturehasstabilized,
useastandard,flatbladescrewdriverto
adjustthethermostat.
4. Turnthethermostatadjustmentcounter-
clockwiseuntiltheHi-limitlightisON.
5. Thenturnthethermostatadjustment
clockwise1/8ofaturnatatime, until the
Hi-limitlight goes OFF.
Atthissetting,if the bathtemp increases
abovetheselectedsetting,theHi-limit
activates.
