Vial Holder Carousels
The Orion AquaMate 8000 and Orion AquaMate 7000 instrumentsinclude the three-position
vial holder carousel preinstalled in the sample compartment. The three-position carousel has
one adjustable 13 to 25 mm round vial holder in position B, one 10 mm square vial holder in
position 2 and one20 to 50 mm (long path) rectangular vial holder in position 4.
The Orion AquaMate 8000 instrument also includes the six-position vial holdercarousel and the
one-position vial holder carousel for 10 mm square vials and traditional spectrophotometer
applications, allowing youto take advantage of thefull capabilities of the instrument.

Selecting and Positioning Vials and Cuvettes
The compatible wavelength range for different types of vials and cuvettes depends on the
material used. Thepath length of test tubesis not aswell defined as that of square cuvettes.
Vial / Cuvette Type
Wavelength Range
Optical Glass
360 nm to > 1100 nm
Borosilicate Glass
330 nm to > 1100 nm
Quartz
190 nm to > 1100 nm
Disposable:
Polystyrene
> 340 nm
Methacrylate
> 300 nm
Acrylic
> 280 nm
UV-transparent
> 220 nm
Note: See the manufacturer’sspecifications and work within the recommended range.
Position vialsand cuvettes so that theclear sides face the light beam, one clear side facing the
front of the instrument and the other facing the back.
Note: Always placevials in the instrument in exactly the same orientation in the light beam. An
alignment mark on the vial helps orientation the vial consistently and correctly.
When using small aperture (small volume) cuvettes:
•Always used cuvettes with black masking
•Use the samecuvette foryour blankand your samples
Z-dimension
The figure belowillustrates the position ofthe light beam in the instrument. Beam size
specifications are shown below.
•Distance frombottom of the vial/cuvette to center of beam (Z-dimension): 8.5 mm

Changing the Vial Holder Carousel
The Orion AquaMate 8000 and Orion AquaMate 7000 instrumentshave the three-positionvial
holder carousel preinstalled in the samplecompartment. Thiscarousel can bechanged to use
the six-position vial holder carousel or one-position vial holder carousel.
Installing the Six-Position or One-Position Vial Holder Carousel
1. Open the samplecompartment door andlet it reston its hinge.
2. Remove the preinstalled three-position vial holder carousel. Loosen the captive
thumbscrew andpull straight up on thecarousel to liftit out of the sample compartment.
3. With one hand, carefully lower the six-position or one-position carousel straight down into
the sample compartment.
4. With the other hand, tighten the captive thumbscrew or thumbscrews.
5. Close the sample compartment door.
Note: If the carousel is not aligned correctly, you will not be able to tighten the thumbscrews.

Sample Positioner Setting for the Vial Holder Carousel
The instrument allows the use of various vial holder carousels to take measurements. When
selecting the test parameters, the Sample Positioner setting determines how the instrument will
work with the installed vial holder carousel to obtain readings in the test measurement screen.
The Sample Changer keys on the instrument keypad are also be used for certain settings.
Sample Positioner Settings
Setting
Description
Manual 3
This setting is only used in the Water Analysis test type.
Use the Sample Changer keys to position the carousel with the desired vial holder in the
beam pathway for measurement. Positions B, 2 and 4 are selectable.
Auto 6
Measure one blank and five samples without changing vials on the carousel.
The instrument automatically measures the blank and advances the carousel to measure
the remaining samples in positions 1 through 5.
Auto 3
Measure one blank and two samples without changing vials on the carousel.
The instrument automatically measures the blank and advances the carousel to measure
the samples in positions 2 and 4.
Manual 6
Measure the blank and up to five samples on the carousel.
Use the Sample Changer keys to position the carousel to the appropriate position for
sample measurement. Place the blank vial in the B position and samples in position 1-5.
Regardless of the carousel position, the carousel automatically goes to the B position and
measures the blank when the Measure Blank function key is pressed. Use the Sample
Changer keys to select different positions for samples.
1-Cell
Platform
Measure the blank and all samples using one position on the carousel.
Place the blank in the holder, measure the blank, remove the blank, place a sample in
the holder, measure the sample, remove the sample and repeat for all samples. The
Sample Changer keys do not function is this setting.
Note: When the carousel is installed and Manual 6 is selected, the instrument always considers
the vial in the B position as a blank. Thismeans thateven after measuring the blank the first
time, samplescan only be placed in positions 1 through 5.

Three-Position Vial Holder Carousel
Corresponding Sample Changer Keys
Initialization of the Vial Holder Carousel
When the Run Test function key is pressed tostart a measurement, the instrument will display
the message “Calibrating and Checking Turret, Please Wait” while it attempts toinitialize the
vial holder carousel (SamplePositioner) at the blank (B) position. With the AquaMatethree-
position carousel, the instrument will rotate the carousel to the default position and then rotate
the carousel back to the last selected measurement position (B, 2 or 4). This ensures that the
vial holderis properly positioned in the beam.
If a one-position vial holder carousel has been installed, the message “Error, Single Cell Holder
found. Use Single Cell Holder?” will appear. Press the Accept Change function key to continue
or install the AquaMate three-position carousel and press the Cancel Change function key.
If the six-position vial holder carousel hasbeen installed, the instrument will initialize to the
blank (B) position. After it has initializedthe carousel, the instrument will proceed to the test
measurement screen.
Note: To prevent a Fatal Error message when removing the vial holder carousel, always return
to the main menu or the test parametermenu before removing the carousel. If the carousel is
removed whilein the test measurement screen, the instrument will display ““Fatal Error: 8 Press
Esc to return to main menu.” If this message is displayed, press the esc key and then press the
Run Test function key to re-initialize the vial holder carousel.
