Chapter 1 Safety
Attention
The safety of any system incorporating the equipment is the responsibility of the assembler of the system.
All statements regarding safety of operation and technical data in this instruction manual will only apply
when the unit is operated correctly as it was designed for.
The M2MS Extension Set must not be operated in explosion endangered environments!
Do not obstruct the air ventilation slots in the housing!
Do not remove covers!
Do not open the cabinet. There are no user-serviceable parts inside!
This precision device is only serviceable if returned and properly packed into the complete original packaging
including the cardboard inserts. If necessary, ask for replacement packaging.
Refer servicing to qualified personnel!
Changes to this device cannot be made nor may components not supplied by Thorlabs be used without writ-
ten consent from Thorlabs.
Attention
Prior to applying power to the M2MS Extension Set, make sure that the protective conductor of the 3 con-
ductor mains power cord is correctly connected to the protective earth ground contact of the socket outlet!
Improper grounding can cause electric shock resulting in damage to your health or even death!
All modules must only be operated with duly shielded connection cables.

Note This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursu-
ant to part 15 of the FCC Rules and meets all requirements of the Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment
Standard ICES-003for digital apparatus. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against
harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment gener-
ates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the in-
struction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a
residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the
interference at his own expense.
Users that change or modify the product described in this manual in a way not expressly approved by Thorlabs
(party responsible for compliance) could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.

The use of shielded I/O cables is required when connecting this equipment to any and all optional peripheral
or host devices. Failure to do so may violate FCC and ICES rules.
This product has been tested and found to comply with the limits according to IEC 61326-1 for using connec-
tion cables shorter than 3 meters (9.8 feet).
The instrument must only be operated with a duly shielded and low resistance USB cable delivered by
Thorlabs.

Attention
The M2MS and M2MS-AL M² Measurement System comes with an alignment laser that is powered by a M2MS
and M2MS-AL internal driver. Be careful when using this laser!
Laser modules can deliver up to several 0.4 mW of even invisible laser radiation! When operated incorrectly,
this can cause severe damage to your eyes and health! Be sure to pay strict attention to the safety recom-
mendations of the appropriate laser safety class, as stated for the used light source.
The device is a class 1laser sources.

Combined with a BP209, BC207or BC210C beam profiler, the M2MS M² measurement extension set measures
quality and divergence of laser beams. It is used in photonics research and development applications.
The M2MS and M2MS-AL Extension Set is designed for laboratory use only. The product may not be used or in-
tegrated into equipment that is applied in pharmaceutical, medical, or military applications. Thorlabs, Inc. Life
Support and Military Use Application Policy is stated below:

Chapter 3 Introduction
The Thorlabs M2MS M2measurement extension set turns Thorlabs beam profilers into a fully-automated M²
measurement system. Thorlabs offers the M2MS extension sets for measurements below 400 nm (M2MS-AL)
and above 400nm (M2MS). Adapters allow to mount the BC207 or BC210C camera beam profiler or BP209 slit
beam profiler to the extension.

Chapter 4 Getting Started
Please inspect the shipping container for damage. Please do not cut through the cardboard. You might need
the box for storage or for returns.
If the shipping container seems to be damaged, keep it until you have inspected the contents for complete-
ness and tested the M2MS Extension Set device mechanically and electrically.

5.1 Beam Quality (M²) Measurement
The Beam Quality panel can be opened from the menu bar (Menu Windows) or by clicking the icon in the
tool bar.
5.1.1 M² Meter Extension Set
The M² Meter Extension Set is an automated stage, compatible with all Thorlabs beam profilers of the BP209,
BC207 and BC210C Series as well as the former BC106N Series, to scan through the light beam in the Z-axis for
the beam profiler to acquire an M2value. Suitable mounting adapters for the beam profilers of the BC207 Ser-
ies, BP209Series and BC210C Series are supplied. Please see the M2MS website for other adapters and infor-
mation.

5.1.2 Setup M2MS
The M2MS Measurement System is factory aligned. The mounting adapter for the Beam Profiler provides a se-
cure and reproducible positioning of the Beam Profiler's input aperture to the M2MS. This eases the mechan-
ical setup.
Note
It is strongly recommended to fix the M2MS properly to the optical table using the four rail clamps that are in-
cluded in the M2MS Accessory Box. To ensure proper mounting, first remove the rubber feet from the M2MS
base plate.
Transportation Lock and Stop Position Latch
In order to avoid transportation damages to the translation stage, it is locked when delivered. This lock must
be removed prior to powering-up the stage, and it must be re-installed for transportation. Additionally, the
DDS100 stage is fixed at its initial position by a solenoid controlled latch, which is the left stop in the photo
(2). This latch fixes the stage when the power supply is switched off and releases the stage when power is ap-
plied.
Removal of the Transportation Lock
1. Remove the 4screws fixing the top cover using a 0.05" hex key (supplied with the M2MS) and remove
the cover.

2. Remove the M4 fixing screw and red stopper (1) using the 3mm ball driver included with the accessory
box. Keep the M4fixing screw and stopper in a safe place for future usage.

5.1.2.1 Connecting M2MS to the PC
The M2MS comprises integrated control electronics with translation stage controller, a USB 2.0 hub and a cur-
rent source for the alignment laser.

Attention!
Prior to connecting the M2MS to the power supply, make sure the transportation lock is removed ! Other-
wise the stage drive may be damaged!
Attention!
It is strongly recommended that only the supplied USB cables are used to connect the Beam Profiler and the
control PC to the M2MS.
The use of other than the supplied USB cables may lead to USB connection instabilities.
Attention
Do NOT connect the M2MS to a computer prior to installing the Beam Software!
1. Remove the transportation lock .
2. Connect AC power to the power supply and its output to the DC jack (7).
3. When using a BP209Series Slit Beam Profiler, connect the Beam Profiler using the supplied angled USB 2.0
cable to one of the USB hub outputs (3). Please do not connect a BC207 and BC210C Series camera Beam
Profiler as they require USB 3.0. Please connect the BC207 and BC210C Series camera Beam Profiler directly
to the PC.
4. Switch the M2MS on (8). The green Power On indicator lights up.
5. Connect the M2MS to the PC using the supplied 3m long USB 2.0 cable; do not start the Beam software yet.
6. The PC's operating system recognizes the connected new hardware and performs the driver installation:

Chapter 6 Maintenance and Service
Protect the Beam Profiler from adverse environmental conditions. The Beam Profiler is not water resistant.
Attention
To avoid damage to the instrument, do not expose it to spray, liquids or solvents!
The unit does not need a regular maintenance by the user.
The M2MS Extension Set does not contain any modules that could be repaired by the user himself. If a mal-
function occurs, please contact Thorlabs first. If necessary, you will be provided with the required return
information.

Thorlabs warrants material and production of the M2MS Extension Set for a period of 24 months starting with
the date of shipment in accordance with and subject to the terms and conditions set forth in Thorlabs’ General

7.1 Return of Devices
This precision device is only serviceable if returned and properly packed into the complete original packaging
including the complete shipment plus the cardboard insert that holds the enclosed devices. If necessary, ask
for replacement packaging. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
7.2 WEEE Policy
Thorlabs 'End of Life' Policy (WEEE)
Thorlabs verifies our compliance with the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive of
the European Community and the corresponding national laws. Accordingly, all end users in the EC may re-
turn “end of life” Annex I category electrical and electronic equipment sold after August 13, 2005 to
Thorlabs, without incurring disposal charges. Eligible units are marked with the crossed out “wheelie bin”
logo (see right), were sold to and are currently owned by a company or institute within the EC, and are not
dissembled or contaminated. Contact Thorlabs for more information. Waste treatment is your own re-
sponsibility. “End of life” units must be returned to Thorlabs or handed to a company specializing in waste
recovery. Do not dispose of the unit in a litter bin or at a public waste disposal site. It is the user's re-
sponsibility to delete all private data stored on the device prior to disposal.
