1.Positionthemoweronaat,levelworksurface.Make
suretheengineisOff.Removethesparkplugwire
fromthesparkplug.
2.Separatethecuttingunitfromthetractionunit;referto
yourOperator’sManualfortheprocedure.
Note:Ifagroomingreelkitisinstalledtothe
cuttingunit,removethegroomingreel;refertoyour
GroomingReelOperator’sManualfortheprocedure.
3.Removethebedbarfromthecuttingunit;refertoyour
Operator’sManualfortheremovalprocedure.
4.Removethebeltcoverandthereeldrivebeltfrom
theleftsideofthecuttingunit;refertoyourOperator’s
Manualfortheprocedure.
5.Blockthereelwithapieceofwoodtopreventitfrom
turning.Removetheangenutsecuringthedrive
pulleytothereelshaft(Figure2andFigure3).Remove
thepulleyfromtheshaft.Removethewoodruffkey
andthespacerfromthereelshaft.
6.Loosenandremovethe2locknuts,capscrews,and
lockwasherssecuringthereeldriveplateassemblyto
theleftsideofthecuttingunit(Figure1).Remove
theassemblyfromcuttingunitsideplate.Removethe
spacer(ifequipped)frombehindthereeldriveplate.

1.Loosenthescrewssecuringtherearroller.
2.Removethe2screws,washers,andlocknutssecuring
thecounterweighttotherightendofthecuttingunit
(Figure2).
3.Removethereelbearinglocknutfromtherightside
ofthereel(Figure2).
Note:Thereelbearinglocknuthaslefthandthreads.
4.Removethesideplatesfromtheframeandreel;refer
toyourOperator’sManual.Removethereel.
5.Removeanddiscardboththeoilsealsfromeach
bearinghousing(Figure2).
6.Removeanddiscardthebearingfromthelefthand
sideplate.
7.Removeanddiscardtheretainingrings,bearing,wave
washer,andthrustwasherfromtherighthandside
plate.
8.Cleanthebearinghousings.

eachreelbearinghousingtothecuttingunitsideplates
(Figure3).
Note:Ifthiskitisbeingusedtoretrotthecanister
sealstooilseals,anewbearinglocknutandspacer
(Figure3)arerequired.Theoilsealsinthiskitrequire
thebearinglocknutandspacertohavea3.2cm(1.25
inch)outerdiameter(oldpartshavea2.8cm(1.125
inch)outerdiameter).Orderpartno.107–3227
bearinglocknutand107–3228spacerfromyoulocal
authorizedToroDistributor.
CAUTION
Contactwiththereel,bedknife,oranyother
cuttingunitpartsmayresultinpersonal
injury.Useheavygloveswhenhandlingthe
cuttingunit.
Important:Supportthereeltopreventitfrom
fallingwhenbearinghousingsareremoved.
4.Removebothofthebearinghousingsfromtheframe
andreel.

5.Removeanddiscardboththeoilsealsfromeach
bearinghousing(Figure3).
6.Removeanddiscardthebearingfromthelefthand
bearinghousing.
7.Removeanddiscardthe2retainingrings,bearing,wave
washer,andthrustwasher(ifinstalled)fromtheright
handbearinghousing.
8.Cleanthebearinghousings.

1.Installthenewbearingintothelefthandbearing
housingorsideplate(Figure6).
2.Installtheretainingring,thrustwasher,wavewasher,
bearing,andretainingringintotherighthandbearing
housingorsideplate(Figure5).
3.Insertanoilsealintoeachsideofthebearinghousing,
positioningthematsideout.
•Onmodelswithintegratedbearinghousingsor
bearinghousingswithaborelengthof4cm(1.578
inches)(Figure4),usethelargewasher(includedin
thekit)topresseachsealintothebearinghousing
untilthewasherisushwiththeouteredgeofthe
bearinghousing.

thereelshaft(Figure7).
Note:Inspectthesleevesandreplacethemas
required.Aspecialsleevedriverisavailable;contact
yourToroDistributortoobtainthistool.Pressanew
sleeveontotheendofeachreelshaftuntilthesleeveis
ushwiththestepintheshaft.

6.InstallanewV–ring,atsiderst,ontoeachendofthe
reelshaftuntilitiscompletelyinsertedontothesleeve.
7.Applyanti–seizelubricanttothebearingjournalsof
thecuttingreel(Figure2andFigure3).Positionthe
reelwiththepitcharmsandthebushingsintheframe
toacceptthebearinghousings.
Note:Thereelshaftendwiththekeywayshouldbe
ontheleftsideoftheframe.
CAUTION
Contactwiththereel,bedknife,oranyother
cuttingunitpartsmayresultinpersonal
injury.Useheavygloveswhenhandlingthe
cuttingunit.

FinishingtheInstallation

ForModelswithIntegratedBearing
Housings
1.Insertbothsideplatesontothereelshaft.Ifnecessary,
tapitintopositionwithasofthammer.
2.Attachthesideplatestotheframe.
3.Securetherearroller.
ForModelswithRemovableBearing
Housings
1.Insertboththebearinghousings(Figure3)throughthe
frameontothereelshaft.
2.Pushthehousingontothereelshaft.Ifnecessary,tap
itintopositionwithasofthammer.
3.Attachthebearinghousingtothesideplateofthe
cuttingunitwiththe2plowboltsandtaperednuts.
Tightenthefasteners.
ForAllModels
1.Applyanti–seizelubricanttotheinternalthreadsofthe
bearinglocknut(Figure2andFigure3).Blockthereel
withapieceofwoodtopreventitfromturning.Install
andtightenthebearinglocknuttothereelshaft.
Note:Thereelbearinglocknuthaslefthandthreads.
2.Installthecounterweighttotherightsideofthecutting
unitwiththepreviouslyremovedhardware(Figure2
andFigure3).
3.Installthespacerintheleftsidereelbearinghousing
(Figure1).Mountthereeldriveplateassemblyto
thesideofcuttingunitwiththepreviouslyremoved
locknuts,capscrews,andlockwashers.Tightenthe
fastenerstosecuretheassembly.
4.Installthespacerandwoodruffkeytothereelshaft
(Figure2andFigure3).Applyanti–seizelubricantto
theinternalboreofthedrivepulleyandpositionthe
pulleyontothereelshaft.Installandtightentheange
nutthatsecuresthepulleytothereelshaft.
5.Checkforfreemovementofthereelassemblyby
rotatingthepulley.Ifbindingisnoted,identifyand
correcttheproblem.
Note:TheFlex21willhaveslightlygreaterreeldrag
thanotherTorogreensmowersduetothereelseal
design.
6.Installthereeldrivebelttothepulleyanddrive
assembly(Figure1).Adjustthedrivebelttensionand
installthebeltcover;refertoyourOperator’sManualfor
theadjustmentprocedure.
7.Installthefrontroller.
8.Installthebedbartothecuttingunit.
9.Installthecuttingunittothetractionunit.
