with respective warning labels. Private transportation is not affected by regulation.
Ensure that the battery is stored in a way that the battery casing is not damaged during

2. Important safety and operating instructions

Torqeedo motors are designed to operate safely and reliably as long as they are used
according to the operating manual. Please read this manual carefully before you start the
motor. Ignoring these instructions can cause property damage or personal injury. Torqee-
do accepts no liability for any damage caused by actions that contradict this operating
manual.
To ensure safe operation of the motor:
• Checkthestatusandfunctionoftheoutboardmotorbeforeeachuse.
• PleasenotethattheGPS-basedrangecalculationissubjecttoconstantcurrentsand
winds. Changes to the direction of travel, currents, and wind directions may significant-
ly affect the displayed remaining range.
• Ifyouarerunningthemotoratfullthrottleinhighambienttemperatures,themotor
may reduce speed automatically to reduce battery temperature. A blinking thermometer
in the display informs about this operation (temperature protection mode).
• Familiarizeyourselfwithallthemotorcontrols.Forinstance,youshouldbeabletostop
the motor quickly if necessary.
• Onlyallowadultswhohavebeeninstructedonhowtooperatethemotortorunit.
• Followtheboatmanufacturer’sinstructionsonthepermissiblemotorizationofyour
boat. Do not exceed the capacity limits.
• Stopthemotorimmediatelyifsomeonegoesoverboard.
• Neveroperatethemotorifsomeoneisinthewaterclosetotheboat.
• Donotopenthebatterycasing;protectthebatterypackfrommechanicaldamage.Ifthe
battery casing is damaged:
- Do not use or charge the battery any more, there is a risk of fire.
- Avoid contact with potentially exposed electrolyte or powder from inside the battery.
If you get in contact with electrolyte or powder on the skin or in the eyes, flush tho-
roughly with fresh water. Then seek medical assistance.
- Contact a Torqeedo Service Center for disposal instructions.
• Onlychargethebatteryonnon-ammablegroundunderadultsupervision.
• Onlychargethebatteryatenvironmentaltemperaturesbetween0°Cand45°C(between
32°Fand113°F).
• Pleasenotethatsince2009lithiumbatterieswithacapacityof>100Whmaynolonger
be carried as luggage in passenger planes (neither as hand luggage nor in the hold).
The battery supplied with this product exceeds this threshold and may therefore not be
transported in passenger planes.
There follows a selection of the most important instructions for handling Torqeedo Travel
motors. Apart from these instructions, please observe the complete operating manual to
prevent damage to or by your motor.
• Onlyrunthemotorwhenthepropellerisunderwater.Ifitisrunintheairforlonger
periods, the shaft sealant rings that seal the motor to the drive shaft may become da-
maged.
• TheTravel503/1003modelsareprotectedagainstdirtandwatertoprotectiontypeIP67
(DIN ISO 60529) (30 minutes under water at a depth of 1 meter).
• Afteruse,alwaystakethemotoroutofthewater.Thetiltmechanismcanbeusedforthis.
• Afteroperationinsaltyorbrackishwater,washallcomponentsinfreshwater.
• Usecontactspraytocareforallelectroniccontactseverytwomonths.
• Exceptwhenchargingthechargingsocketmustalwaysbecovered.Todosopleaseuse
the flap fixed to the socket.
• Youextendthelifespanofyourbatteryifyoudonotexposeittohotenvironmentsfor
longer than necessary.
• Complywiththefollowingrulesifyouarestoringyourbatteryforalongerperiodof
time. Storage for around six months: Charging level when stored 50%. Storage for a
whole year: Charging level when stored 100%. If the battery is to be stored for several
years the charging level should be checked once a year in order to prevent the battery
from deep discharging.
• Ifthemotorhasmalfunctionsanerrorcodeisshownonthedisplay.Afterresolvingthe
error the motor can be restarted again from the stop-position of the tiller. Depending
on the error code displayed it may be necessary to switch the motor off using the “on/
off”buttononthetiller.Younddescriptionsanddetailsinthe“Errormessages/trouble
shooting“ chapter in this operating manual.
• Donotleavethemotorinthewaterwhentheboatismovedbyotherdrives(e.g.while
sailing, towing the boat) to prevent damage to the electronics.
• Fullychargetheequipmentbeforetherstuseinordertocalibratethechargelevelindicator.
