1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 ThisOperatingManual shouldbe readthrough carefullybeforeinstalling and
operatingtheINV2500-HS invertermodulesor INV5000-HSinverter
systems.SeeFigure 1.
1.2 TheINV2500-HSis a2500volt-ampere hot-swap,telecom invertermodule.It
convertsa nominal 48VDCinput into a115VACoutput at 50or 60Hz. These
modulesaredesigned togo intoa 19-inch,hot-swapcompatible shelf,
INVR2U-HS,which holds one ortwo units. When twounits are used inthis
shelftheyareautomatically connectedinparallel andsynchronizedtopro-
duce5000 volt-amperesat 115VAC output(44 amperes).Or theycan be
operatedina1+1 redundantmodeat 2500volt-amperes.
1.3 For230VACoutput at 50or 60Hz thereare two otherinverter models,desig-
natedINV5000-HS-230, whichuse twoINV2500-HS units connectedin
seriesintheir shelfto givethe highervoltage. Seethe productline designa-
tionin Section 3.0.The output is230VAC at22 amperes, or5,000 volt-
amperes.
1.4 The48VDC nominalinput hasa range of42 to56VDC. Theinverters achieve
90%efficiencyand 7VA percubic inch powerdensity.Input andoutput are
bothcircuitbreaker protected.They havehigh surgecapabilityfor starting
loadssuch asmotors, butthe output breakerquickly tripsif powerattempts
toflowback intoa faultedinverter.
1.5 Theseinverters canbe paralleledfor higheroutput poweror for N+1redun-
dantapplications.They arefully isolatedfrom thebattery.Frontpanel LEDs
indicateinverterstatus, andFormC relayalarmcontacts areavailableon the
back.The unitsare self-cooledby internalfans.

7.0 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
7.1 TheINV2500-HSmodules employMOSFET andIGBT powersemiconductor
switcheswithadvanced, high-frequency, pulsemodulationtechniques to
producealow-distortion, 50or 60Hzsine waveoutput with90% efficiency
and7VAper cubic inchpower density. Asynchronization circuitlets two or
moreinvertermodules operateinparallel withtheiroutputs inphase-synchro-
nizationandcurrent shared.
7.2 TheINV5000-HS-230 invertersystem consistsof two INV2500-HSsoper-
atedin seriesfor a230VAC outputat 5,000volt-amperes (22A). Theseries
connectionof theunits ismade internally inthe shelf. Each ofthe two inverter
moduleshas itsown inputand output breakers, indicator LEDsand FormC
relaycontacts. Thetwo invertermodules in theINV5000-HS aredifferentin
thattheir outputsare 180oout ofphasewith eachother.
7.3 TwoINV2500-HS invertermodules in anINVR2U-HS shelfare connectedin
parallelin theshelf andbecome an invertersystem witha 115VACoutput at
5,000volt-amperes(44A).
7.4 For the purpose of this manual, the INV5000-HS-230 and two INV2500-
HS modules in an INVR2U-HS shelf are both 5,000 VA inverter systems
and will be referred to as an INV5000-HS where the generic meaning is
conveyed. Whilethe twodifferentshelves areidentical insize and appear-
ance,theydifferin theirinternal moduleconnection(series orparallel).

14.4 Connectthe ACoutput cableto theproper outputscrew terminals.See
Figure10 forthe correct connectionfor 115 or 230VAC outputversions.
Connectaload ofapproximately10 amperesacross theoutputof theinverter.
14.5 To powerup the inverter, turnthe A side (left)DC input circuitbreaker on by
movingthe toggle tothe up position. TheA side fansand input OK andSync
OKLEDs shouldcome onfollowed by theOutput OKLED approximatelyfour
seconds later. After the Output OK LED is on, turn on the A side AC output
breakerby placingthe toggle inthe upposition. Next, turnthe B side(right)
DC input breaker on. The B side fans and Input OK and Sync OK LEDs
shouldcomeon followedby theOutput OKLED approximatelyfour seconds
later. After the Output OK LEDis on, turn on theB side AC output breaker.
ChecktheAC voltageacross theload withadigital ACvoltmeter.Thevoltage
shouldbebetween 115 and120VACorbetween 230and 240VAC, depend-
ingonthe model.
14.6 ChecktheForm CRelay contactswith anohmmeter.SeeFigure 3.Measure
theresistance betweenthe N.O.contacts andC contacts. They should
indicateanopen. Measurethe resistancebetween theN.C.contacts andthe
Ccontacts. Theyshould indicatea short.
14.7 Turnoffthe AC output circuitbreakers first, followedby the DC inputbreak-
ers,by placingthe togglesin the downposition. Testeach inverter inthe
mannerdescribedabove.
15.0 INVERTERAPPLICATION

through14.6,except theinverter shouldbe connectedto itsactual load. The
loadsconnectedto theoutputof theinverter shouldalwayshave theirown
individualcircuitbreakers. Make connectionsto theForm Crelay contactsas
required.Thenre-install therear plasticsafety cover.
15.2 For twoormore invertersin parallel, make theinput andoutput connections
tothe invertersas described inSection 13.0.See Figure 9.Put all output
distributioncircuit breakersin theoffposition. Connectthe syncterminals
togetherobservingproperpolarity.
