OPERATING MANUAL
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 ThisOperatingManual shouldbe readthrough carefullybeforeinstalling and
operatingtheINV2500 orINV5000 Seriesinverters.
1.2 TheINV2500is a2500 volt-amperetelecom inverterwhichconverts anomi-
nal48VDC input into a 115VAC output at 60Hz. TheINV5000 is a 5000VA
inverterwhich convertsa nominal 48VDCinput into115or 230VAC at 60Hz
or230VAC at50Hz. The INV2500 comesas a single, stand-alone unit.A 19-
inchcompatible shelf whichcan also bemounted in a23-inch rack andholds
oneor twoINV2500s is alsoavailable. TheINV5000 comes ina 19-inch
shelfwhich can alsobe mounted in a23-inch rack. Boththe INV2500 and
INV5000are twomounting positions (3.5inches) high.See Figure 1.
1.3 The48VDC nominal input hasa range of 42to 56VDC, and fullload output
is115VAC at 22 amperesRMS for the INV2500. Forthe INV5000 the output
is115VAC at 44 amperesRMS or 230VAC at 22amperes RMS. The invert-
ersachieve 90%efficiencyand 7VA per cubicinch powerdensity. Inputand
outputareboth circuitbreaker protected.The invertershave highsurge
capabilityfor startingloads suchas motors, butthe outputbreaker quickly
tripsif powerattempts toflow back intoa faultedinverter.
1.4 Theseinverters canbe paralleledfor higher outputpower orfor N+1 redun-
dantapplications.They arefully isolatedfrom thebattery.Front panelLEDs
indicateinverterstatus, andFormC relayalarm contactsareavailable onthe
back.The unitsare self-cooledby internal fans.

7.0 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
7.1 TheINV2500 andINV5000 Series employMOSFET andIGBT power semi-
conductorswitcheswith advanced,high-frequency, pulsemodulationtech-
niquesto producea low-distortion,50 or 60Hzsine waveoutput with90%
efficiencyand7VA per cubicinch powerdensity.A synchronizationcircuit

synchronizationandcurrent shared.
7.2 TheINV5000 consists oftwo INV2500s operatedin parallel for115VAC
outputor operatedin seriesfor a 230VAC output. The parallelor series
connectionof theunits ismade internally. Each ofthe twoinverters hasits
owninput andoutput breakers, indicator LEDs andForm Crelay contacts.

topare the green LED indicatorsfor Input OK, Sync OKand Output OK.
8.2 Onthe INV2500 back panel atthe upper left is thesync terminal which is a
BNCconnector.Below that is a no. 8-32stud and nut for chassisground
connection,then a3-terminal Type602 Spring Conconnector foreasy con-
nectionof wiresto the FormC Relaycontacts. Below thisare three Ander-
son-Typeconnectors for theAC output (topto bottom):green (ground), white
(neutral)and black(line). On theright sideof the inverterare three larger
Andersonconnectors forthe DC input. From topto bottom theyare: green
(ground),red (DC Return)and black (-48V Input).
8.3 Figure3 shows the front and back of an INV5000. Eachfront half (side A or

12.8 Connector Kit. AcompleteMating ConnectorKit (No.775-1438-0000) is
suppliedwith eachINV2500. Eachkit contains Andersonmating inputand
outputconnectors, a12-inch cable withBNC connectorsand a BNCtee
adaptor.
13.0 PARALLEL OPERATION
13.1 TheINV2500and INV5000Series invertersare designedto operatein paral-
lelfor higher outputcurrent. This isdone by connectingall inputs inparallel
andall outputsin parallel, althoughthe DCinputs could comefrom two
separatesources.In addition,the syncterminals mustbe connectedtogether
bymeans of acable with BNC connectors. The sync terminalis used only for
parallelconnectionof twoor moreinverters. SeeFigure 8.For morethan two
inverters,BNCtee adaptorsarerequired. Currentsharingbetween paralleled
invertersis±10%.
13.2 Alternatively, separatesourcesmay beused forthe inputstothese inverters
whiletheoutputs areconnected inparallel. Ineither case, output loads
shouldhaveindividual distributioncircuit breakers.The followingtableshows
outputcurrentand totalvolt-amperesfor invertersconnected inparallel.

DC input breaker on. The B side fans and Input OK and Sync OK LEDs
shouldcomeon followedby theOutput OKLED approximatelyfour seconds
later. After the Output OK LEDis on, turn on theB side AC output breaker.
ChecktheAC voltageacross theload withadigital ACvoltmeter.Thevoltage
shouldbebetween 115 and120VACorbetween 230and 240VAC, depend-
ingonthe model.
14.7 ChecktheForm CRelay contactswith anohmmeter.SeeFigure 3.Measure
theresistance betweenthe N.O.contact(s) and Ccontact(s). It(they) should
indicateanopen. Measurethe resistancebetween theN.C.contact(s) and
theC contact(s).It (they) shouldindicate ashort.
14.8 Turn offthe AC outputcircuit breaker(s) first, followedby the DC input
breaker(s),byplacing thetoggles inthe downposition. Testeach inverterin
themannerdescribedabove.
15.0 SINGLE AND MULTIPLE INVERTER APPLICATION
15.1 Inthe actualapplication ofthe INV2500or INV5000inverter,followthe proce-
dureinsections 14.2through 14.6,except theinverter shouldbe connected
toits actualload. Theloads connectedto theoutput ofthe invertershould
alwayshavetheir ownindividual circuitbreakers asshown inFigure 8. Make
connectionsto theForm Crelay contacts asrequired. Then, for theINV5000,
re-installtherearsafety cover.
15.2 For twoor moreINV2500s or INV5000sin parallel,make the inputand
outputconnections tothe invertersas describedin Sections14.3 and14.4.
SeeFigures 3, 9and 10. Put alloutput distribution circuitbreakers in the off
position.Connect thesync terminals togetherwith BNCconnectors and
cables.Formore thantwo inverters inparallel, oneor moreBNC teeadapt-
erswillbe required.
