Equipment properties
Application
The VRC 430 is a weather compensated controller for
heating and hot water preparation.
"Weather-compensated" means: At low outside
temperatures the VRC 430 provides more heating
output, and at higher outside temperatures lower
heating output. The outside temperature is measured
by a separate sensor, mounted outdoors and
transmitted to the VRC 430.
The room temperature is only dependent upon your
preset values. The influence of the outside
temperature is compensated for.
You can use the VRC 430 to set different room target
temperatures - for different times of the day and for
different days of the week.
In automatic mode, the VRC 430 controls your heating
in accordance with these settings (see Fig. 0.1).
The VRC 430 can be used for setting daily heating
periods for hot water preparation.

The VRC 430 can also be used for the control of the
following accessories:
– Circulation pump for the hot water provision in
combination with a multi-functional module VR 40
– Ventilation unit
– conventional hot water cylinder
– Vaillant layer cylinder actoSTOR
– Second heating circuit using the Vaillant Mixer
Module VR 61
– Solar system using the Vaillant Solar Module VR 68
– Commercially available 230 V components
(e.g. valves, cylinder thermostats)
The VRC 430 can be operated with the Vaillant remote
control VR 81.
The VRC 430 can form part of a new heating and hot
water preparation installation or can also be retro-fitted
into an existing installation. The boiler must have an
eBUS interface.
eBUS is a communication standard for data exchange
between the components of heating technology.

1.3 Validity of the instructions
These operating instructions are valid exclusively for
equipment with the following part number:
00 2002 8520 VRC 430
The part number of your unit can be obtained by asking
your installer.
1.4 CE label
The CE mark documents the fact that the controller
calorMATIC 430 fulfils the fundamental requirements of
the relevant directives.
2 Safety
The VRC 430 may only be installed by a suitably
qualified heating engineer. This engineer also assumes
responsibility for installing the appliance properly and
putting it into service for the first time.
3 Instructions for operation
3.1 Intended use
The controllers VRC 430 are state-of-the-art appliances
which have been constructed in accordance with
recognised safety regulations. Even so, in the event of
inappropriate or non-intended use, impairment of the
device and other real values can arise.
The controller VRC 430 is designed for the weather-
compensated and time-dependent control of a heating
installation with or without hot water preparation/
circulation pump in combination with a Vaillant boiler
with eBUS interface.

Operation with the following accessories is permissible:

– Solar system using the Vaillant Solar Module VR 68

Center VR 65
Note: the Control Center VR 65 cannot be used with a
mixer module VR 61 or a solar module VR 68.
– 230-V cylinder thermostat in combination with the
relay box VR 41
Any other use or extended use is considered to be use
other than intended. The manufacturer or supplier is not
liable for any resulting damage. The owner alone bears
any risk.
Intended use also includes observance of the operating
and installation instructions and all other documents
also have validity.
3.2 Ambient conditions
If the VRC 430 is mounted on the wall, the function
"room temperature compensation" is activated and no
remote control unit VR 81 is connected, take care:
– that the air in the room can circulate freely around the
VCR 430 and that the VRC 430 is not obscured by
furniture, curtains or other objects.
– that the radiator valves in the room where the
VRC 430 is fitted are fully open.
"Room temperature compensation" means that the
current room temperature is evaluated by the
VRC 430 and is taken into account in the regulation.
Your installer will advise you whether the "room
temperature compensation" is activated.
3.3 Care
Clean the enclosure of the VRC 430 with a damp cloth.
Do not use scouring or cleaning agents which could
damage the operating elements or the display.
3.4 Service, Warranty
Vaillant Service
To ensure regular servicing, it is strongly recommended
that arrangements are made for a Maintenance
Agreement.
Please contact Vaillant Service Solutions
(0870 6060 777) for further details.
Vaillant warranty
We only grant a Vaillant manufacturers warranty if a
suitably qualified engineer has installed the system in
accordance with Vaillant instructions.
The system owner will be granted a warranty in
accordance with the Vaillant terms and conditions.
All requests for work during the guarantee period must
be made to Vaillant Service Solutions (0870 6060 777).
3.5 Recycling and disposal
Both your VRC 430 and its packaging are primarily
made of recyclable raw materials.
Appliance
Neither the VRC 430 nor any of its accessories may be
disposed of in the household waste. Make sure the old
device and any existing accessories are disposed of
properly.
Packaging
Please leave the disposal of the transport packaging to
the qualified servicing company which installed the
appliance.

Fig. 4.1 shows the default display. It provides
the following information:
– the operating mode (automatic, manual or off) of the
heating circuit 1
– the current room temperature
The default display is described in detail in
Chapter 4.3.3.
The functions of the two dials are described in
Chapter 4.3.

4.2 Overview of the displays
The parameters and settings (operating values) of the
VRC 430 are shown on different screens.
The screens are sub-divided into:
– Default display (Fig. 4.1)
– Basic display (Fig. 4.2)
– Display/input screens for certain specific parameters
in the user level (see Chapter 4.4 and 4.5)
– Display/input screens for operating and installation
specific parameters in the installer level
All the screens are divided into three areas.

4.3 Operating concept
The operation in the default display is described in
Chapter 4.3.3.
The operating concept described below applies to the
basic display (Fig. 4.2) and to the various different
display/input screens of the user level.
The two dials (Fig. 4.1 Items 2 and 3) function according
to the Vaillant principle "Turn and Click".
When turning the dials (clockwise or anti-clockwise),
they index positively with each step. Each index step
also moves the cursor one position forwards or
backwards in the display.
By clicking (pressing) you can highlight or accept
changes to a parameter.

individual screens of the display like a book.
Example:
You are now located in the basic display. To get to the
basic display see Chapter 4.3.3.

The position is indicated by the

If a parameter (e.g. a date with day, month, year)
consists of several elements, scroll from one element to
the next by turning the right-hand dial.

Fig. 4.2). The way you get to the basic display is
described in Chapter 4.3.3.

4.3.3 Operation in the default display
hNote!
The default display always appears if the mixer
module VR 61 (for a second heating circuit) is
not connected and the VRC 430 is wall-
mounted.
In the default display (Fig. 4.8) the operating mode for
heating and the current room temperature are displayed
in the central area.
The default display alsoallows you to change the two
most important parameters of your
heating installation quickly and comfortably:
- By turning the left-hand dial you change the operating
mode (automatic, manual, off).
- By turning the right-hand dial you can change
between the actual room temperature and the set
room temperature.

By clicking either dial you can move from the default
display to the next screen (Fig. 4.2 basic display).
If there has been no operation of the
controller for longer than 5 minutes, the display returns
to the default display.

Changing the operating mode in the default display
Operating

Auto(matic) The control of the heating circuit takes place in
accordance with the guideline of the target room
temperature, the time programmes and other
parameters, such as set-back temperature and
the heating curve.
In part, these parameters are set by your installer.
Manual The control of the boiler depends upon the set
room temperature.
OFF The heating circuit is switched off. The set target
room temperature is not displayed and also
cannot be altered.
Frost protection is guaranteed.

Changing the room temperature in the default display
The control of the boiler is according to the set room
temperature. The control system ensures that the
set room temperature is reached rapidly and is
retained at this level.
The prerequisite for this is that the selected heating
curve corresponds to the conditions and the
function room temperature control is activated.
⇒Turn the right-hand dial.
Instead of the room temperature, the current set room
temperature is highlightedd. After a delay of 1 second
you can select the new room temperature:
⇒Turn the right-hand dial further until the desired
room temperature appears.
After a delay of 2 seconds, the new room temperature is
saved, the temperature is no longer highlighted and the
actual room temperature is displayed.

The new room temperature is used instead of the
programmed temperature until the end of the current
time programme. This duration depends upon the
operating mode; see also Chapter 4.4.
4.4 Changing the target room temperature
If you change a target value - either the room
temperature or the hot water target value - in the basic
display or in the default display, the new value overrides
the programmed temperatures..
When in „Manual“ mode, the control uses the temporary
temperatures until either the operation mode or the
temperature is changed.
When in „automatic“ mode, the control uses the
temporary temperature until the next time window
starts (if you have changed the set target value outside
a time window) or until the end of the current time
window (if you have changed the set target value within
the time window); see Fig. 4.11.

The upper diagram in Fig. 4.11 shows a programmed time
window (see Chapter 4.7.1) with the associated room
temperature (21 °C).
In the lower diagram, at (1) the value of the room
temperature is changed (20 °C). The control system
uses this value until the start of the time window.
From here (2) the control system uses the room
temperature of the time window (21 °C).
At (3) the value of the room temperature is changed
(17 °C).
The control system uses this value up to the end of the
time window (4).
After the time window, the control system uses the set-
back temperature (15 °C).

The same characteristics apply in the same way
for the hot water target value.
4.5 Level for the user, level for the installer
The controller VRC 430 has two levels for the display/
entry. Each level has a series of screens in which the
parameters can be displayed, adjusted or changed.
– Level for the user
Serves for the display and for the setting/changing of
the fundamental parameters. The setting/changing of
parameters can be carried out by the user without any
special previous knowledge and during normal
operation.
– Level for the installer
Serves to display and for the setting/changing of
specific parameters and is restricted to the installer.
4.6 Screens in the user level
The screens in the user level are arranged in the same
sequence as in the following table 4.4.
This table shows you which parameters you can adjust
and change.
Examples of this can be seen in Chapter 4.7 below.
This is the way in which the first screen "basic data" of
the user level can be reached from the default display:
⇒Click with one or both dials.
You get to the basic display.
⇒Turn the left-hand dial by one or two points in the
clockwise direction.

By turning the left-hand dial further you will scroll from
one screen to the next.
Other screens, apart from the ones shown in Table 4.4,
e.g. 3 or 6, only appear if accessories are installed
and if the control system operates via the VRC 430.

4.7 User screens (examples)
4.7.1 Entering time programmes (example for
heating)
Using the time programmes you can allocate up to three
time windows per weekday, or block of days (e.g.
Mo - Fr). In these time windows, the heating system
maintains the room temperature that you have selected,
the so-called comfort temperature.
Outside the time windows, the room temperature is
set back. The set-back temperature can also be changed.

If you programme the control to match your
lifestyle in the most optimum manner then you
will save energy whilst maintaining heating
comfort.
The way in which the time window is programmed is
described in the following example for heating circuit 1.
You can define time windows in a similar way for hot
water and for a circulation pump .

The comfort temperature for time window 1 is set as
follows:
⇒Turn the right-hand dial until the cursor  is in front
of the comfort temperature of time window 1.
⇒Click the right-hand dial.
The field is highlighted.

The control supports the user when
programming time windows:
a) The programmed times can only be
chronological.
b) A programmed time window cannot overlap
an earlier time window.
A time window can only be located between
0:00 and 24:00.
An existing time window can be deleted
as follows:
Set the start time and the end of a window to
the same time.
Note!
The time programmes for hot water or for a dhw
circulation pump are set in the same way as
described for heating circuit 1. For hot water
and the dhw circulation pump, it is not
necessary to programme comfort temperatures.
4.7.2 Programming holiday periods
For a longer period of time when you are not at home,
you can define a lower room temperature. This will save
heating energy.
The control ensures that the boiler heats up the living
rooms only to this room temperature.
You can, e.g. set a room temperature of 15 °C if you are
on holiday from the 10th to the 24th February. In this
time period, the living rooms are heated only to 15 °C.
You can also select the frost protection function instead
of a room temperature.
Proceed as follows to programme a holiday period:
⇒Turn the left-hand dial until you reach screen 7

4.7.3 Heating settings
You can enter the following parameters:
Set-back temperature
Outside the specified time windows, the
room temperature is reduced to the set-back
temperature.
If your installer has set the frost protection function,
the set-back temperature will automatically be 5 °C.
and the set-back temperature will not be shown.
Heating curve
The relationship between the outside temperature and
the required heating flow temperature is represented
by a diagram with different heating curves (see Fig.
4.15). Each heating curve (from 0.2 - 4.0) gives a value
for the heating flow temperature (vertical diagram
axis) for a specific outside temperature (horizontal
diagram axis).

Example:
If the heating curve has been set to 1.5, this means that
to achieve a room temperature of 20 °C the boiler flow
temperature will be 57 °C when the outside temperature
is 0 °C.
hNote!
In a well-insulated property a comfortable room
temperature can be achieved even with a flat
heating curve. This saves heating energy.
Your expert heating technician will provide
advice as to which heating curve should be
selected.
To change the heating curve: (example heating circuit 1):

HAttention!
Risk of being scalded by hot water!
When the target temperature is above 60°C,
there is a risk of scalding at the hot water taps.
Young children and elderly persons are
particularly at risk, even at lower temperatures.
Select the target temperature so that nobody is
at danger.
4.7.5 Changing the name of the system components
On screen 14 you can see which names of
components you can change.

5 Status and error messages
Status and error messages are displayed in the second
row of the field for basic data.
Status messages
– Holiday programme active
Within a specified holiday time period the heating is
limited to the room temperature specified for this
period.
– Maintenance + telephone number of the installer
Indicates the requirement for heating system
maintenance.
In addition, the telephone number of your installer
appears if he has programmed it in.
Error message:
Fault at boiler.
Indicates a fault in the heating system.
