S CTION 2: INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing a Vanner LSC12-1100 true sine wave Ambu ance Inverter/Charger for your emer-
gency vehic e. We are confident you wi be satisfied with its performance.
Vanner products are designed and manufactured by ski ed professiona s using the highest standards in
workmanship, guaranteeing exce ent performance and re iabi ity for your emergency vehic e. With mini-
mum maintenance and care, you can expect years of troub e-free service from your Vanner product.
The LSC12-1100 is a 12 VDC to 120 VAC true sine wave inverter with bui t-in battery charger, transfer
re ay, and KKK Spec 12VDC Portab e Equipment Charging Circuit. The unit is equipped with an AC input
ine cord for connecting to AC input power (shore/uti ity power) and equipped with a Ground Fau t Circuit
Interrupter (GFCI) receptac e for AC output. This a ows AC oads to be connected direct y to the inverter.
The DC input uses an Anderson sty e two-po e quick connector to faci itate insta ation and pre-wiring of
emergency vehic es. The 12V Portab e Equipment Charging Circuit has a spring c amp for ease of output
connection. The unit must be connected to the DC source for the transfer relay and battery
charger to work correctly.

S CTION 4: FUNCTIONALITY
WARNING : The LifeSine wi be damaged if battery positive and battery negative are connected
to the inverter backwards.
Inverter Function
The LSC12-1100 converts 12VDC battery power to 1100 Watts of true sine wave 120V AC power to op-
erate vita emergency vehic e equipment.
If the inverter is over oaded it wi shut down for three seconds and attempt to restart. After 5 shutdown/re-
start attempts the inverter wi shut down and atch OFF. The inverter must be turned OFF/ON to reset.
If battery vo tage goes above 16.5V, or momentari y goes be ow 10.5V the inverter wi shut down and wi
automatica y restart when vo tage comes back within operating range. If vo tage stays be ow 10.5V the
inverter wi shut down and atch OFF. The inverter must be turned OFF/ON to reset.
Remote Control
Remote contro capabi ity is bui t in for ON/OFF contro of the inverter function. (Remote contro has no
effect on the battery charger or transfer switch functions.) The unit is designed to accept one customer
supp ied maintained remote contro signa . The remote contro signa may be +12V, GROUND, or two-wire
CONTINUITY.
When retrofitting the LifeSine into an o der system that has two remote contro signa s, an automotive re ay
may need to be added. see Section 8: Insta ation; Step 9: Remote Contro .
Load Demand
The Load Demand feature is not recommended for vehicle applications. The recommended Load
Demand setting for ambulance is OFF. (DIP Switch 7 OFF (DOWN.) In vehic e app ications many of the
typica AC oads are too sma to prevent the inverter from going into Load Demand mode (going to s eep)
which wou d prevent those oads from receiving AC power.
With the Load Demand feature enab ed, the inverter wi go into Load Demand mode (go to s eep) when
the AC oad is be ow 20 watts and wi come out of Load Demand mode (wake up) when the AC oad is
above 40 watts. Whi e the inverter is in Load Demand mode (as eep) the inverter’s vo tage/power/status
LED’s and the inverter’s AC output vo tage are pu sed ON every ten seconds. The Load Demand feature
is usefu in some “backup power” app ications, such as for an unattended sump pump, where the inverter’s
tota AC oad is zero watts for ong periods of time. In sump pump back-up power app ications Load Demand
may significant y reduce the power drawn from the battery and therefore extend backup time during a power
outage.
If the GFCI receptac e trips whi e the Load Demand feature is enab ed, the inverter wi go into Load De-
mand mode (go to s eep) since the inverter wi not see any AC oad. The GFCI receptac e’s reset button
does not work whi e the inverter is in Load Demand mode since AC power is not present. To reset the
GFCI, turn the inverter OFF and ON, and reset the GFCI within 10 seconds. The inverter a ways starts up
“out of Load Demand mode” for 10 seconds.

Battery Charger
The LSC12-1100 incorporates an energy-efficient three-stage battery charger. This design enab es the unit
to automatica y charge batteries, maintaining the battery's integrity and reducing the ike ihood of premature
fai ure.
The LSC12-1100 charger is an extreme y efficient PFC (Power Factor Corrected) and PI (Proportion-Inte-
gra ) mu ti-stage battery charger. The PFC feature contro s the amount of power used to charge the batter-
ies to obtain a power factor as c ose a possib e to 1 (or unity). This causes the battery charger to ook ike
a resistor to the ine (forces the charge current wave shape to mirror the vo tage wave shape). The PI
feature a ows the charger vo tage and current to change independent y. These two energy-efficient fea-
tures maximize the rea power avai ab e from the AC power source (shore power) which trans ates into ess
power wasted and greater charging capabi ities that other chargers.
The battery charger is “contro ed” by the presence of AC input power. Charge Mode begins when AC input
power is accepted. The battery charger is not contro ed by the inverter ON/OFF switch or the inverter
remote contro . In battery charging mode, a four status LED’s wi be on.
Charging Amps and Battery Type are se ectab e using the Setup DIP Switch ocated on the front of the
inverter. Charging vo tages are determined by the battery type se ected. The factory setting for charging
amps is 50 amps. This is the recommended setting for ambu ance. The factory setting for Battery Type is
F ooded.
Note: After making a change to the Setup DIP Switch settings, shore power must be removed and the
inverter must be cyc ed OFF/ON for the change to go into effect.
The LifeSine LSC12-1100 must be connected to the battery and battery vo tage must be above 10.5V for
the charger/transfer switch to turn ON. The battery charger function WILL NOT TURN ON if battery vo tage
is be ow 10.5V. If battery vo tage is be ow 10.5V, it wi be necessary to momentari y “jump” the battery so
the charger can turn ON.
Transfer Switch
When the AC input cord is connected to an AC source (shore power), the inverter begins monitoring for
acceptab e AC input power. After the AC input power is accepted the bui t-in AC TRANSFER SWITCH
changes the source for the inverter’s GFCI receptac e from inverter power to shore power. Shore power
wi then be supp ying power to the GFCI receptac e. The TRANSFER SWITCH switches both HOT and
NEUTRAL so the NEUTRAL-to-GND bond is in effect on y at the source of AC power. The source of AC
power is the inverter when on inverter power, and is the shore circuit breaker pane when on shore power.
Automatic Power Management
The purpose of this feature is to try to imit the oad on shore power to 12AC amps. The oad on shore
power consists of the “pass through oads”, which are the AC oads receiving power from the inverter’s
GFCI receptac e, combined with the AC power (approx. 7.5 amps AC max) being consumed by the battery
charger. Automatic Power Management wi reduce battery charger power (reduce DC charging output
amps) as needed so the oad on shore power does not exceed 12 AC amps. If the “pass through oads”
exceed 12 AC amps, the battery charger power wi be reduced to zero DC output amps and the LifeSine
wi shut down for AC Input Over Current Shutdown.

Bulk Charging Stage
The battery charger a ways begins in the Bu k charge stage each time shore power is connected. In Bu k
the charging current is he d at the Charging Capacity amps. Battery vo tage rises. Upon reaching Bu k
Vo tage, or after eight hours, Bu k charge stage ends and Absorption charge stage begins.
Absorption Charging Stage
Battery vo tage is he d at Absorption Vo tage. Charging current varies as needed to ho d battery vo tage
constant. After one hour, or when charging current fa s be ow approx. 3.5 amps, Absorption ends and F oat
begins.
Float Charging Stage
Battery vo tage is he d at F oat Vo tage. Charging current varies as needed to ho d battery vo tage constant.
The charger wi switch to Bu k charge stage if charging current remains at “Bu k charging amps” for more
than approximate y 5-30 seconds.

12V DC OUTPUT POW R CIRCUIT
The LSC12-1100’s 12V DC OUTPUT Power Circuit comp ies with KKK section 3.7.7.2 for PORTABLE
EQUIPMENT CHARGING CIRCUIT. Which states “A circuit shall be furnished for charging all portable
battery powered devices, i.e. suction units, hand lights, portable radios, etc. This circuit shall prevent dis-
charge of chassis batteries by only permitting the charging of portable devices when the vehicle is either
running or the optional battery conditioner is connected to shore power. Circuit protection shall be provided
and shall have a minimum 10 amp capacity. An additional tagged, identified lead shall be furnished in both
the cab and module for connection of additional (future portable equipment that requires recharging.”
12V DC OUTPUT Power (battery power) is avai ab e in inverter mode when the inverter is ON, and in
battery charger mode when acceptab e shore power is present.
The 12V DC OUTPUT Power Circuit is protected by a 20 Amp ATO fuse abe ed DC Fuse, ocated beside
the output termina on the front of the inverter.

The ON/OFF/REMOTE Switch provides ON/OFF contro for the inverter. This switch has no contro over
the battery charger or transfer switch functions. Set the switch to the ON position to turn the inverter ON.
Set it to the OFF position to turn the inverter OFF. Set it to the REMOTE position to enab e inverter re-
mote contro .
If the unit has shut down for a fau t, reset the inverter by cyc ing the ON/OFF/REMOTE Switch OFF and
back ON, or, if there is a remote switch, by cyc ing a remote switch OFF/ON.

SAVE THESE INTRUCTIONS: This manua contains important safety and operating proce-
dures.
1. CAUTION – To reduce risk of injury, charge on y F ooded, AGM, or GEL ead-acid batteries. Other
types of batteries may burst causing persona injury and damage.
2. Do not expose the unit to rain or snow.
3. Use of an attachment not recommended or so d by the manufacturer may resu t in a risk of fire,
e ectric shock, or injury to persons.
4. Do not disassemb e unit. Return to Vanner when service or repair is required. Incorrect reassem-
b y may resu t in a risk of e ectric shock or fire.
5. To reduce risk of e ectric shock, unp ug unit from out et before attempting any maintenance or
c eaning. Turning off contro s wi not reduce this risk.
6. WARNING – RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GASES.
a) WORKING IN VICINITY OF A LEAD-ACID BATTERY IS DANGEROUS.
BATTERIES GENERATE EXPLOSIVE GASES DURING NORMAL BATTERY OPERA-
TION. FOR THIS REASON, IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT EACH TIME BE-
FORE SERVICING THE UNIT IN THE VICINITY OF THE BATTERY, YOU READ THIS
MANUAL AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY.
b) To reduce risk of battery exp osion, fo ow these instructions and those
pub ished by battery manufacturer and manufacturer of any unit you intend to use in vicinity
of battery. Review cautionary marking on these products and on engine.
7. PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS AROUND BATTERIES
a) Someone shou d be within range of your voice or c ose enough to come to your aid when
you work near a ead-acid battery.
b) Have p enty of fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts skin, c othing, or
eyes.
c) Wear comp ete eye protection and c othing protection. Avoid touching eyes whi e working
near battery.
d) If battery acid contacts skin or c othing, wash immediate y with soap and water. If acid en-
ters eye, immediate y f ood eye with running co d water for at east 10 min and get medica
attention immediate y.
e) NEVER smoke or a ow a spark or f ame in vicinity of battery or engine.
f) Be extra cautious to reduce risk of dropping a meta too onto battery. It might spark or
short-circuit battery or other e ectrica part that may cause exp osion.
g) Remove persona meta items such as rings, brace ets, neck aces, and watches when
working with a ead-acid battery. A ead-acid battery can produce a short-circuit current
high enough to we d a ring or the ike to meta , causing a severe burn.
h) NEVER charge a frozen battery.
i) If removing battery from vehic e, a ways remove grounded termina from battery first. Make
sure a accessories are off so as not to cause an arc.
j) Be sure area around battery is we venti ated.

8. UNIT LOCATION

d) Do not operate unit in a c osed area or an area having restricted venti ation.
9. DC CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS
Connect and disconnect DC output connections on y after turning unit OFF and removing shore
power.
11. GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
The chassis of this unit shou d be connected to vehic e chassis. Connections to unit shou d com-
p y with a oca codes and ordinances.

Unpacking
1. Inspect the shipping container and equipment for oose or damaged parts. If any damage is found, imme-
diate y notify the freight carrier.
2. An Accessory Pack is inc uded with the LifeSine that contains the necessary Anderson sty e DC cab e
connector and associated parts. The Accessory Pack inc udes:

Installation
3. Verify the inverter ON/OFF/Remote switch is in the OFF position. Make sure power to the vehic e wiring
harness is disconnected.
4. Se ect a ocation for the unit. An idea insta ation ocation has the fo owing characteristics:
 C ose to the battery (not in the same enc osure)
 Protected from the weather
 We venti ated
Coo ing air enters at the back of the unit and exits through the front of the unit. For maximum performance
the ocation shou d minimize recircu ating the same hot air through the unit.
5. Route DC input cab es.
Route the negative and positive DC input cab es from the inverter quick connector to the battery. Protect
cab es where they contact hard, sharp edges.

Insta an in ine fuse, purchased separate y, in the positive DC input cab e from the battery to the inverter.
The fuse shou d be ocated within 18 inches of (or as close as practical to) the battery or DC wiring
bus system.
Vanner recommends using;
 Bussmann ANN-150 Fuse (Vanner #014838) and #4164 Fuse Ho der (Vanner #03637).
OR
 Bussmann AMG-150 Fuse (Vanner #010098) and Vanner “ShortSafe” Fuse Ho der D018361.
7. Connect bonding ug.
Use an 8AWG or arger copper conductor to connect the inverter chassis bonding ug to the vehic e chas-
sis.
8. Connect the inverter to the battery. B AWAR that, as a arge number of capacitors become charged
upon comp etion of the DC circuit, TH R MAY B A LARG SPARK when the ast battery connection
is made. The spark is norma and may occur every time the batteries are connected.
Connect the b ack, negative DC input cab e from the quick connector to the battery negative (-) termina .
This battery negative termina is usua y where the battery negative connects to the engine b ock or
frame. Connect the red, positive DC input cab e from the quick connector to the in/ ine fuse near the bat-
tery positive (+) termina . The positive DC cab e must be connected to the DC e ectrica system on the
battery side of the Battery Disconnect Switch so the charger can charge the battery whi e the disconnect
switch is OFF.
The inverter wi be damaged, not covered under warranty, if the battery positive and negative cab es are
reversed.
9. Connect 12V DC OUTPUT Power termina to DC oads.
Connect the green one-position connector abe ed 12V DC OUT to 12vdc oads. Use up to 14AWG wire.
Strip wire insu ation back 1/2”. Push the bare wire fu y into the bottom (round) opening of the green con-
nector. To re ease the wire insert the supp ied sma f at screwdriver “straight in” into the upper (rectangu-
ar) opening.
10. Set the 8-position DIP Switch for the desired inverter/charger operation.
The factory DIP Switch settings are: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8, ON (UP); (5, 6, and 7, OFF (DOWN).

Note: After changes are made to the Setup DIP Switch settings, shore power must be removed and the

11. Remote Contro
The LSC12-1100 wi accept one maintained remote contro signa from a customer supp ied remote
switch. The remote contro signa can be a +12vdc signa ; or a GND signa ; or a continuity signa .
Connect the remote contro signa wire to the Remote Contro & A arm Termina B ock. Use up to 14AWG
wire. Strip insu ation back 3/8”. Push the bare wire straight into the bottom (rounded) opening. Be sure
the bare wire is fu y inserted and not touching sheet meta or an adjacent termina . To re ease the wire
use a thumbnai or sma too to press the grooved button above the wire.
If using a +12VDC Remote Contro Signa , insert the signa wire into Termina 4, ENB+.
If using a GND Remote Contro Signa , insert the signa wire into Termina 5, ENB-.
If using a two-wire continuity signa , insert the wires into Termina s 5 and 6, ENB- and GND.
Set the ON/OFF/REMOTE Switch to the REMOTE position.
DO NOT app y +12v to the GND termina . This wou d create a dead short and may damage the unit.
Deactivate remote contro by setting the ON/OFF/REMOTE Switch to the ON or to the OFF position.

Note: The LifeSine is designed to accept ONLY ONE remote contro signa . If more than one of the
signa s shown above are connected to the inverter, it won’t harm the LifeStar but wou d provide
undesirab e operation since the signa s wi be performing “in para e ”.
It is common for an ambu ance to have two remote contro switches. One approach to accomp ish this is
to connect the switches in series. Have the first switch provide one of the signa s shown above. Have the
second switch provide continuity between the first switch and the inverter.
For a two-switch remote contro arrangement where one switch provides a +12v signa and the other
switch provides a GND signa , an automotive re ay wi need to be added. This may be the case when the
LifeSine is rep acing an o der inverter. See Automotive Re ay sketch on the next page.
