DCM97K -- Separable Meter :
Digital Multimeter (DMM) & AC Current Transducer
1.INTRODUCTION
Thank you for buying the DCM97K ! We
are confident that this multifunctional
device will serve you well for many
years to come.
This is a separable meter consisting of
a digital multimeter (DMM) and an AC
current transducer. The DMM can be
used individually for DC & AC voltage
measurements and for measuring
resistance, diodes and continuity. The
meter can be used to measure AC
currents when the AC current
transducer is mounted firmly on the
DMM.
The multimeter has been designed in
accordance with IEC-1010 concerning
safety requirements for electrical
measuring instruments and hand-held
current clamps.

PART 1 : THE DIGITAL MULTIMETER (DMM)
1.SAFETY INFORMATION
This multimeter has been designed in accordance with UL1244 and IEC-1010
concerning safety requirements for electronic measuring instruments with an
overvoltage category (CAT II) and pollution 2.
Follow all safety and operating instructions to ensure that the meter is used safely
and is kept in good working order.
1.1. Preliminary
The user should observe all standard safety rules :
lDo not abuse the device.
lFull compliance with safety standards can be guaranteed only if the device is
used with the supplied test leads. If necessary, they should be replaced with
identical leads or leads with identical electronic ratings. All measuring leads
should be in good condition.
1.2. Use
lObserve a warm-up delay of at least 60 seconds.
lThe display may become unstable and the readings inaccurate if the multimeter
is used in the vicinity of noise-generating equipment.
lNever exceed the limit values of the various measurement ranges as indicated
in this manual.
lDisconnect all test leads from circuits that are currently being tested before
selecting a different function.
lNever perform resistance measurements on live circuits.
l Always be careful when working with voltages in excess of 60VDC or 30Vrms
AC.
l Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers while using the device.

1.4. Maintenance
lAlways disconnect the test leads from energised circuits before opening the
housing or the battery compartment.
lRefrain from using the device and have it repaired by qualified personnel in
case of malfunction.
lDo not use the meter unless the back panel and the battery cover are in place
and securely fastened.
lUse a damp cloth and mild detergent for cleaning purposes. Never apply
abrasives or solvents to the meter.
2.DESCRIPTION
This meter is a professional auto-ranging
measuring instrument. Consult figure 2 and
read the explanation for the various numbered
controls in order to familiarise yourself with the
functions and keys of the front panel.
Digital Display
All measured values are displayed on an
LCD with 3200 points. The device is
equipped with a 33-segment analogue bar
graph. The device provides an automatic
polarity indication, decimal point, AC & DC
range indication, unit indicators, MΩor KΩ

Used to select the desired function and
range.

Push this key to select the manual range selection mode or to change ranges.
Push the RANGE key once to make the RANGE indicator appear on the LCD.

Push the RANGE key again to select the desired range. Hold the RANGE key
for two seconds in order to return to the autoranging mode.
÷"FUN."-key
Push the blue "FUN."-key to alternate between AC & DC voltage measurement
if the device is in the in the voltage mode. Push the key to alternate between
resistance, continuity or diode measurement if the device is in the Ω
mode.
ø"Hold"-key " "
This key is used to freeze the measured value for all functions. The " " symbol
is displayed when this function is used. Measurements are still performed but
the display is not updated.
í Back Light Key
This key is used to activate the back light. The light is deactivated automatically
after approx. 5 seconds. Press the key again to reactivate the back light.

3.5. Diode and Audible Continuity Test

3.6. Auto Power Off
The meter will automatically deactivate when not used for approx. 10 minutes.
Push the "RAN." key to reactivate the meter.
4.OPERATION
4.1. Voltage measurements
1.Connect the red test probe to the "V-Ω" input terminal and the black test lead to
the "COM" terminal.
2.Place the function switch in the " " position.
3.Push the blue "FUN."-key until the VAC or VDC function is reached.
4.Connect the test probe and the lead to the source to be tested.
WARNING
Do not attempt to measure voltages that might exceed 600VDC or 600VAC in
order to avoid electroshocks or damage to the meter. Do not apply more than
600VDC or 600Vrms AC between the "COM" input terminal and the earth.
NOTE
The display may become unstable, especially when working in the 300mV-range,
even if you do not connect the test probe with the circuit. Short the "V-Ω" terminal
and the "COM" terminal and make sure the zero is displayed if you suspect that a
particular reading is erroneous.

4.2. Resistance Measurement
1.Connect the red test probe to the "V-Ω" terminal and the black test lead to the
"COM" terminal.
2.Place the function switch in the "Ω" position and use the "FUN."-key to
select resistance measurement.
3.Make sure that the tested device is not under tension in order to ensure a
correct reading.
4.Connect the test leads to the resistor to be measured. Short the test leads prior
to performing your measurements in order to obtain maximum accuracy when
measuring low resistance values. Memorise the displayed value and, if
necessary, subtract the displayed value from the result of the measurement.
NOTE
1.The device may need a few seconds to produce a stable reading when
performing measurements in the 30MΩ-range. This is normal when high
resistances are being measured.
2.The overrange indication "OL" will be displayed if the input is not connected,
e.g. with an open circuit.
4.3. Continuity Test (buzzer)
1.Connect the test probe to the "V-Ω" terminal and the black test lead to the
"COM" terminal.
2.Place the function switch in the "Ω" position and use the blue "FUN."-
key to select the continuity function.
3.Connect the test probe and the lead to the circuit to be measured. The buzzer
will sound if the resistance of the circuit < 30Ω.
4.4. Diode Test
1.Place the function switch in the "Ω" position and use the "FUN."-key to
select the diode function.
2.Connect the black test lead to the "COM" terminal and the red probe to the "V-
Ω" input terminal.
3.Connect the red test probe to the anode and the black lead to the cathode of
the diode. The meter will display the approx. forward voltage of the diode. Only
"OL" will be displayed if the lead connection is reversed.

6.BATTERY REPLACEMENT
The batteries need to be replaced when the " "-sign appears on the LCD.
Remove the screws of the battery cover and open the cover. Replace the old
batteries with two new 1.5V-batteries (supplied).
Note : Please observe all applicable laws when disposing of your old batteries.
WARNING
Make sure that all test leads have been disconnected from the circuit to be
measured before opening the battery cover in order to avoid the risk of
electroshocks.

PART 2 : THE AC CURRENT TRANSDUCER
1.SAFETY INFORMATION
The AC current transducer has been designed in accordance with IEC1010
concerning safety requirements for hand-held current clamps.
Use the device safely and keep it in good working order by following the
instructions in this manual.
