1. PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
Charge current up to 85 A and PV voltage up to 150 V
The BlueSolar 150/85-MPPT charge controller is able to charge a lower nominal-
voltage battery from a higher nominal voltage PV array.
The controller will automatically adjust to a 12, 24, or 48 V nominal battery voltage.
Synchronised parallel operation of up to 25 units
Interconnect the charge controllers with RJ45 UTP cables and they will automatically
synchronise.
Charge process controlled by a Multi or Quattro
Connect the charge controller to a Multi or Quattro and build a Hub-1 off-grid or grid-
interactive self-consumption system.
Remote on/off connector
Less wiring and no additional Cyrix relay needed in a system with Li-ion batteries.
Ultra fast Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)
Especially in case of a clouded sky, when light intensity is changing continuously, an
ultra fast MPPT controller will improve energy harvest by up to 30% compared to PWM
charge controllers and by up to 10% compared to slower MPPT controllers.
Advanced Maximum Power Point Detection in case of partial shading conditions
If partial shading occurs, two or more maximum power points may be present on the
power-voltage curve.
Conventional MPPT’s tend to lock to a local MPP, which may not be the optimum MPP.
The innovative BlueSolar algorithm will always maximize energy harvest by locking to
the optimum MPP.
Outstanding conversion efficiency
No cooling fan. Maximum efficiency exceeds 98%. Full output current up to 40°C (104°F).
Flexible charge algorithm
Several preprogrammed algorithms. One programmable algorithm.

2. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
● It is advised to read this manual carefully before the product is installed and put into use.
● This product is designed and tested in accordance with international standards. The
equipment should be used for the designated application only.
● Install the product in a heatproof environment. Ensure therefore that there are no
chemicals, plastic parts, curtains or other textiles, etc. in the immediate vicinity of the
equipment.
● Ensure that the equipment is used under the correct operating conditions. Never operate
it in a wet or dusty environment.
● Never use the product at sites where gas or dust explosions could occur.
● Ensure that there is always sufficient free space around the product for ventilation.
● Refer to the specifications provided by the manufacturer of the battery to ensure that the
battery is suitable for use with this product. The battery manufacturer's safety instructions
should always be observed.
● Protect the solar modules from incident light during installation, e.g. cover them.
● Never touch uninsulated cable ends.
● Use insulated tools only.
● At a voltage >75 V, particularly with regard to the open circuit voltage of the PV array, the
solar system must be installed according to protection class II. A chassis grounding point is
located on the outside of the product. If it can be assumed that the grounding protection is
damaged, the product should be taken out of operation and prevented from accidentally
being put into operation again; contact qualified maintenance personnel.
● Ensure that the connection cables are provided with fuses or circuit breakers. Never
replace a protective device by a component of a different type. Refer to the manual for the
correct part.
● Connections must always be made in the sequence described in section 4
● The installer of the product must provide a means for cable strain relief to prevent the
transmission of stress to the connections.
● In addition to this manual, the system operation or service manual must include a battery
maintance manual applicable to the type of batteries used.
● Use flexible multistranded copper cable for the battery and PV connections.
The maximum diameter of the individual strands is 0,4 mm/0,125 mm² (0.016 inch/AWG26).
A 25 mm² cable, for example, should have at least 196 strands (class 5 or higher stranding
according to VDE 0295, IEC 60228 and BS6360).
An AWG2 gauge cable should have at least 259/26 stranding (259 strands of AWG26).
Maximum operating temperature: ≥ 90°C.
Example of suitable cable: class 5 “Tri-rated” cable (it has three approvals: American (UL),
Canadian (CSA) and British (BS))
In case of thicker strands the contact area will be too small and the resulting high contact
resistance will cause severe overheating, eventually resulting in fire.

3. INSTALLATION
Important:
In order to enable automatic system voltage recognition always connect the
batteries before connecting the solar panels.
3.1 Location
The product must be installed in a dry and well-ventilated area, as close as possible to -
but not above - the batteries. There should be a clear space of at least 10 cm around
the product for cooling.
The charge controller is intended for wall mounting.
Mount wall bracket (for top holding), make sure it is level.
Put charger on mounting bracket and secure it with two screws in the mounting holes at
the lower backside of the charger.
3.2 Battery cables and battery fuse
Do not invert the plus and minus battery connection: this will
permanently damage the charger.
Cable strain relief must be provided, close to battery and PV
connectors.
In order to utilize the full capacity of the product, battery cables with sufficient cross section
and a fuse of sufficient current rating should be used.
Some basic formulas for copper cable:
Resistance Rc (mΩ@47°C) of a cable with length L (m) and cross section A (mm²): Rc = 20*L/A (1)
Or, with Rc in Ω (Ohm): Rc =0,02*L/A (2)
Power loss Pc (W) in a cable carrying current I (A): Pc = I²*Rc = 0,02*l²*L/A (3)
Power loss Pc relative to solar array output Pv in %: α = (Pc/Pv)*100 (4)
Cable cross section required to limit relative power loss to α (%): A = 2*2L*I/(α*V) (5)

This product may only be installed by a qualified electrical
engineer.

(5).

3.3 PV connection
The PV input current of the charge controller is limited to 75A. In case of a potential
solar array output exceeding 75A, the solar array voltage will increase up to the level at
which the output is reduced to 75A.
The required PV cable cross section depends on array power and voltage. The table
below assumes that maximum PV power has been installed. Cable cross section can
be reduced in case of smaller solar arrays.
The best efficiency is reached at a PV input voltage that is twice the battery voltage.
DC circuit breakers or fuses must be installed in the positive and negative PV cables, to
enable isolation of the charger during installation or maintenance.
The table below gives some examples of cable cross sections calculated with formula
(5).

The voltage on the PV input should never exceed 150V under any condition.
The charger will be permanently damaged if the input voltage is too high.
Cable strain relief must be provided, close to PV and battery connectors.

3.4 Optional connections
3.4.1 Voltage Sense
For compensating possible cable losses during charging, two sense wires can be connected
to measure voltage directly on the battery. Use wire with a cross-section of 0,75mm² and
insert a 0,1 Amp fuse close to the battery.
During battery charging, the charger will compensate the voltage drop over the DC cables
up to a maximum of 1 Volt (i.e. 1V over the positive connection and 1V over the negative
connection). If the voltage drop threatens to become larger than 1V, the charging current is
limited in such a way that the voltage drop remains limited to 1V.
The warning triangle on the LCD will blink if the voltage drop reaches 1 Volt
3.4.2 Temperature Sensor (see figure 1)
The temperature sensor supplied with the product may be used for temperature-
compensated charging. The sensor is isolated and must be mounted on the battery minus
pole.
3.4.3 CAN bus interface
The charger is equipped with two CAN bus RJ45 sockets.
The CAN bus interface will be referenced to ground if the minus pole of the battery is
grounded.
In case of a positive grounded system, a CAN isolation module will be needed to reference
the CAN bus interface to ground.
To prevent ground-loops, the charge controller has an internal 33 Ohm resistor between
CAN-GND and the battery minus output of the charge controller.
The end of a CAN cable should have a bus terminator. This is achieved by inserting a bus
terminator in one of the two RJ45 connectors and the CAN cable in the other. In case of a
node (two CAN cables, one in each RJ45 connector), no termination is needed.
The CAN bus on this charger is not galvanically isolated. The CAN bus is
referenced to the minus battery connection.

3.4.4 Programmable relay
The charge controller is equipped with a potential-free Single Pole Double Throw relay
that by default is programmed according to option 3 below.
The relay can be programmed to energize on one of the following events:
option 1: when the maximum voltage on the PV input is exceeded
option 2: when the temperature protection becomes active
option 3: when the battery voltage becomes too low (adjustable low voltage limit)
option 4: when the charger is in equalisation mode
option 5: when the charger is in error mode
option 6: when the charger temperature drops below -20°C (-40°F)
option 7: when the battery voltage becomes too high (adjustable high voltage limit)
option 8: when the charger is in float mode.
option 9: when the solar panel is irradiated (day/night indication).
3.4.5 Synchronised parallel operation
Several charge contollers can be synchronised with the CAN interface. This is achieved
by simply interconnecting the chargers with RJ45 UTP cables (bus terminators needed,
see section 3.4.3).
The paralleled charge contollers must have identical settings (e.g. charge algorithm).
The CAN communication ensures that the controllers will switch simultaneously from
one charge state to another (from bulk charge to absorption for example). Each unit
will (and should) regulate its own output current, depending a.o. on the output of
each PV array and cable resistance.
In case of using remote sensors (voltage and/or temperature), the remote sensor must
be connected to only one of the paralleled charge controllers. All other contollers will
share the information via the CAN interface.
In case of synchronized parallel operation the network icon will blink every 3
seconds on all paralleled units.
The PV inputs should not be connected in parallel. Each charge controller
must be connected to its own PV array.
3.4.6 Charge process controlled by a Multi or Quattro inverter/charger: HUB-1
operation
To build a Hub-1 off-grid or grid-interactive self-consumption system the charge controller(s)
must be connected to a Multi or a Quattro using the VE.BUS to VE.CAN interface. The
Micropressor of the Multi or Quattro will then control the charge process (HUB-1 assistant
software needed). The display on the controller will show ‘HUB-1’.

4. POWERING UP
(The REMOTE connector should be wired , see 4.5)
4.1 Connecting the battery
Close the connection to the battery, but DO NOT connect the solar array.
All the icons of the display will now light up:
This is followed by the software version:
In this case the Software-version is 2.03
After the software-version has been displayed, the
charger will start the system voltage recognition
phase.
The LCD-screen displays two values:
Left: actual measured battery voltage.
Right:system (= nominal battery) voltage (12/24/36
or 48V), blinking during the battery recognition
phase.
In some instances the charge controller might not reflect the correct system voltage (e. g. if
the battery is deeply discharged and the actual battery voltage is far below the nominal
voltage). In that case the system voltage can be adjusted manually, see section 4.2.
If the nominal battery voltage shown is correct, press the SETUP button to accept.
Alternatively, the battery voltage shown becomes final automatically after connecting the PV
array, when PV current starts flowing.
4.2 Adjusting system voltage (adjust only if the system voltage as displayed is
wrong)
a. Press SETUP during 3 seconds: the “Menu” icon will light up.
b. Press the "-" or "+" button several times until the
screen shows “  ”.
c. Press SELECT: “” or the system voltage will
blink.
d. Use the "-" or "+" button to decrease or increase
system voltage.
e. Press SELECT to confirm the change, the value will stop blinking, and the change is
made final.
f. Press SETUP during 3 seconds: the display is back in normal. mode and the “Menu”
icon will disappear.
Note: a 36V system will not be detected automatically and must be set with help of the
above mentioned procedure.

4.3 Charge algorithm
4.3.1. Overview
Several preset charge curves and one user adjustable curve are available, see table
below.
The DEFAULT-setting is algorithm nr 2.
Make sure the charge algorithm is correct for the battery-type that must be
charged. If necessary, contact the battery supplier for the appropriate
battery-settings. Wrong battery settings can cause serious damage to the
batteries.

4.3.2. Procedure for choosing a preset charge algorithm
a. Press SETUP during 3 seconds: the “Menu” icon will light up.
b. Press the "-" or "+" button several times until the screen
shows “  ”.
c. Press SELECT: the algorithm number will now blink (a
number with superscript “type”).
d. Use the "-" or "+" button to choose the desired
algorithm.
e. Press SELECT to confirm the change, the value will stop blinking, and the change is
made final.
f. To return to normal mode, press SETUP during 3 seconds.
4.3.3. User adjustable charge algorithm
a. Proceed as described in the previous section, and
select algorithm number 8 (user defined)
b. Press the "-" or "+" button to select the parameter that
must be changed
(“  ”,“  ” or
“  ”).
c. Press SELECT: the voltage will now blink.
d. Use the "-" or "+" button to chose the desired voltage.
e. Press SELECT to confirm the change, the value will stop blinking, and the change is
made final. With the "-" or "+" button it is now possible to scroll to another parameter
that needs change.
f. To return to normal mode, press SETUP during 3 seconds.
4.3.4. Other charge algorithm related settings
Absorption time: default 6 hours
Temperature compensation: default -2,7 mV/°C per cell (-65 mV/°C for a 48V lead-acid battery)
Equalisation:
Some manufacturers of VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead-Acid: i.e. Gel or AGM) batteries
recommend a short equalization period, most do not. Most manufacturers of flooded
batteries recommend periodic equalization.
Please see table 5 for more adjustable parameters.
Note about service life of lead-acid batteries
Flat plate VRLA batteries (i. e. all 6V and 12V VRLA batteries) as well as flat plate flooded
batteries for automotive application deteriorate quickly when discharged by more than 50%,
especially when left in discharged state for hours or days. We therefore recommend not to
discharge by more than 50% and recharge immediately after a deep discharge.
All lead acid batteries will deteriorate if not fully charged from time to time.
4.3.5. Battery charging information
The charge controller starts a new charge cycle every morning, when the sun starts shining.
The maximum duration of the absorption period is determined by the battery voltage
measured just before the solar charger starts up in the morning:

If the absorption period is interrupted due to a cloud or due to a power hungry load, the
absorption process will resume when absorption voltage is reached again later on the
day, until the absorption period has been completed.
The absorption period also ends when the output current of the solar charger drops to
less than 2 Amps, not because of low solar array output but because the battery is fully
charged (tail current cut off).
This algorithm prevents over charge of the battery due to daily absorption charging
when the system operates without load or with a small load.
4.4 Connecting the solar array
After the correct charge algorithm has been selected, the controller is ready for use.
Other settings may be changed/entered before or after connecting the solar array.
Close the connection to the solar array.
If there is sufficient sunlight, the charger will automatically start charging the battery.
If, despite sufficient sunlight, the PV voltage reads 000V, please check the
polarity of the PV cable connection.
4.5 Remote on-off
The charge controller will switch on if:
a) A wire link is present over the REMOTE terminals (default factory wire setting).
b) The left-hand REMOTE terminal (marked as B+) is connected to the positive
terminal of the battery (12/24/36/48V). Use wire with a cross-section of 0,75mm²
and insert a 0,1 A fuse close to the battery.
c) A voltage source of 3-60V (with respect to the negative battery terminal) is
connected to the REMOTE B+ terminal.
In case a, the charge controller will switch off if the wire link is removed/interrupted.
In case of b or c, the charge controller will switch on if the voltage is > 5 V.
If the voltage is < 3 V, the charge controller will switch off.

Pressing the "-" button or the "+"button for 4 seconds activates the auto-scroll-mode.

The auto-scroll-mode can be stopped by pressing the "-" or the "+" button shortly.

5.2 History data
The charge controller tracks several parameters regarding the energy harvest.
Enter history data by pressing the SELECT button when in monitor mode, a scrolling
text will be visible.
Press + or – to browse the various parameters as shown in table 5, press SELECT to
stop scrolling and show the corresponding value.
Press + or – to browse the various values. For the daily items it is possible to scroll
back to 30 days ago (data becomes available over time), a brief popup shows the day
number.
Press SELECT to leave the historical menu and go back to the monitor mode,
alternatively press SETUP to return to the scrolling text.

a. To enter the SETUP Menu, press and hold the SETUP-button during 3 seconds. The
“Menu” icon will light up and a scrolling text is visible.
b. Press the "-" or "+" button to scroll.
c. Table 6 above lists in order of appearance all parameters which can be adjusted by
pressing the "-" button.
d. Press SELECT: the parameter to change will now blink.
e. Use the "-" or "+" button to chose the desired value.

f. Press SELECT to confirm the change, the value will stop blinking, and the change
is made final.
g. Press SETUP to return to the parameters menu. With the "-" or "+" button it is now
possible to scroll to another parameter that needs change.
h. To return to normal mode, press SETUP during 3 seconds.
1) Press SELECT: the text “” will blink, press SELECT again to reset to original
factory settings. The charger will re-boot. The history data will not be affected (kWh-
counter).
2).These values can ONLY be changed for the battery number 8 (User-defined battery).
The values in the table are for a 48V-battery.
3) Automatic equalisation can be set to “OFF” (default) or a number between 1 (every
day) and 250 (once every 250 days). When Automatic equalisation is active, the
absorption charge will be followed by a voltage limited constant current period (see
table 3). The text “equalize” will be on.
The current is limited to 8% of the bulk current for all VRLA (Gel or AGM) batteries and
some flooded batteries, and to 25% of the bulk current for all tubular plate batteries.
The bulk current is the rated charger current (85A) unless a lower maximum current
setting has been chosen.
If, as recommended by most battery manufacturers, the bulk charge current does not
exceed 20A per 100Ah battery capacity (i.e. 425Ah for a 85A charger), the 8% limit
translates to max 1,6A per 100Ah battery capacity, and the 25% limit translates to max
5A per 100Ah capacity.
In case of all VRLA batteries and some flooded batteries (algorithm number 1, 2 or 3)
automatic equalization ends when the voltage limit maxV has been reached, or after
t = (absorption time)/8, whichever comes first.
For all tubular plate batteries automatic equalization ends after t = (absorption time)/2.
When automatic equalisation is not completely finished within one day, it will not resume the
next day, the next equalisation session will take place as determined by the day interval as
programmed in the setup menu.
4) Press SELECT: the text “” will blink, press SELECT again to erase the history data
(kWh-counter, etc). Note that this takes a few seconds to complete.
5) Backlight automatic turn-off has the following options: OFF=backlight remains lit all the
time, ON=the backlight will dim 60s after the last keypress, AUTO=when charging the
backlight is lit, otherwise it will dim.
Warning
Some battery manufacturers do recommend a constant current equalization period,
and others do not. Do not use constant current equalization unless recommend by
the battery supplier.

6. MANUAL EQUALISATION
To allow the charger to equalise the battery properly, use the manual equalise option only
during absorbtion and float periods, and when there is sufficient sunlight.
To enable equalisation, enter the setup-menu and press the "-" or "+" button until the text
“  ” is visible on the menu. Press SELECT: the text “” will
blink, press SELECT again to start equalisation.
To terminate the equalisation mode prematurely, enter the setup-menu and press the "-" or
"+" button until the text “  ” is visible on the menu. Press SELECT:
the text “” will blink, press SELECT again to stop equalisation.
Current and voltage limits are identical to the automatic equalise function (see section 4.3).
The equalise duration is however limited to max. 1h when triggered manually.
7. TROUBLESHOOTING
With the procedures below, most errors can be quickly identified. If an error cannot be
resolved, please refer to your Victron Energy supplier.

Disconnect all power-sources from the charger, and open the front cover.
Check if the white connectors on the control-pcb (at the left of the LCD)
are properly connected. The connector coming from the coil (mounted to
the top of the charger) should be connected in the right connector
(CON302).
If connected properly, close front cover and power-up again.
If the error persists the charge controller is probably faulty.
This error will auto-reset.
Err 26
Terminal overheated
Power terminals overheated, check wiring and fasten bolts if possible.
This error will not auto-reset.

PV over-voltage
This error will auto-reset after PV-voltage has dropped to safe limit.
This error is an indication that the PV-array configuration with regard to
open-circuit voltage is critical for this charger. Check configuration, and if
required, re-organise panels.

PV over-current
The current fromthe solar-panel array has exceeded 75A. This error
could be generated due to an internal system fault.
Disconnect the charger from all power-sources, wait 3 minutes, and
power-up again. If the error persists the controller is probably faulty.
This error will auto-reset.
Inf 65
Communication warning
Communication with one of the paralleled controllers was lost. To clear
the warning, switch the controller off and back on

Incompatible device
The controller is being paralleled to another controller that has different
settings and/or a different charge algorithm.
Make sure all settings are the same and update firmware on all chargers
to the latest version

BMS connection lost
Connection to the BMS lost, check the CAN bus cabling. When the
charger needs to operate in stand-alone mode again, change to setup
menu setting ‘BMS’ from ‘Y’ to ‘N’ (setup item 31).

This error will reset after the CPU has cooled down.
If the error persists, check the ambient temperature and check for
obstructions near the air inlet and outlet holes of the charger cabinet.
Check manual for mounting instructions with regard to cooling. If error
persists the controller is probably faulty.

This error will not auto-reset.
Err 119
Settings data lost
This error will not auto-reset.
Restore defaults in the setup menu (setup item 62).
