Pleasefollowtheseimportantinstructionswhileusingyourunit:
1.Makesureyouuseespressostylegroundsintheespressomaker.
2. Before removing any of the parts and accessories, make sure the power button is off with
the light ring unlit and unplug the unit. Allow the appliance to cool.
3.Thelockingleverinthelockedposition“

”willnotallowtheremovaloftheportalter
at any time.
4.Usecautionwhenremovingtheportalter.Themetalpartsmaystillbeveryhot.There
maybehotwateroatingontopofthelter.Holditbyitshandletodisposeofthe
brewed espresso grounds.
5.Ifespressodoesnotappear,theportalterisblocked.Turnofftheapplianceandallow
ittocooldown.Theespressobeansmighthavebeengroundtoonelyanditmaybe
causingthis.Seethe“problemsandsolutions”section.
6. To clean the steam wand, place a pitcher or large cup with water under the steam wand.
Makesurethetipofthesteamwandissubmergedinliquidbeforepressingthesteam

”onandturningthesteamdialclockwiseforsteam.Froththewaterfor
approximately 15 seconds then wipe the steam wand, sleeve and tip clean.

preparing for use
CLEANYOUR ESPRESSO MAKER BEFORE USING FORTHE FIRSTTIME
MakesureyourrstcupofespressoisasgoodascanbebycleaningyourVillaWare™
EspressoMakerbeforeitsrstuse.Followthesesimplesteps:
1. Makesuretheunitisoffandunpluggedfromtheelectricaloutlet.
2. Firstremoveandthenwashthewaterreservoiranditslid,theportalter,ltersand
tamper in a mixture of mild detergent and water. Rinse each thoroughly and place them
backontotheunit.Refertotheinstructionsbelowon“BREWINGESPRESSO”before
removingthelterandportalter.
3. Tocleantheinsideoftheappliance,followstepslistedin“BREWINGESPRESSO” using
wateronly.Donotimmersetheapplianceinwaterorattempttoreachanyofits
internal parts.
PRIMETHE PUMP BEFORE USING FORTHE FIRST TIME
Run a thirty second steam cycle using the following instructions:
1.PushthePowerbutton“
+
”on lighting the amber ring.
2. Placeacupunderthesteamwand.
3.PresstheSteambutton“
+
”. The amber light ring will illuminate.
4. Turn the steam dial clockwise to activate some steam.
5. Wait thirty seconds and press the steam button “
+
” to stop the cycle.

ATTENTION: IFYOUAREPLANNINGTOMAKECAPPUCCINO,PLEASEREFERTO

1. Makesuretheunitisswitchedoffandunplugged.
2. Fillthereservoirwithwaterusingacontainer(Figure1)orbyremovingitandusingthe
faucet(Figure2).Ifyouhaveremoveditfromtheunit,makesuretoplaceitbacktightly
intoposition.Fillthereservoirwiththedesiredamountofwaterensuringitranges
withinthe“MIN”and“MAX”markingsonthereservoir.Neverusewarmorhotwater
tollthewaterreservoir.
3. Closethewaterreservoirlid.
4. Plugthepowercordintoanelectricaloutlet.
5. Pressthepowerbutton“
+
”to turn the unit on.The unit will start the heater warm-up
cycle.The light ring around the power button will illuminate to show that the unit is on
and will pulse until the appropriate temperature is reached before returning to a steady
light. The unlock icon “
+
” of the lever will light up if lever is in the unlocked position.
6. Placethedemitasse(s)onthecupwarmerontopoftheunittoheat.
7. Slidethelterreleasebuttonbackwards(Figure3)andplacethedesiredlterinthe
portalter. Onceinplace,releasethebuttontolockthelterinplace(Figure4).To
ensurethelterissecurelyinplace,turntheportalterupsidedown.
8. Filltheselectedlterwithnegroundespressooranespressopod.Cleananyexcess
espressogroundsfromtherimoftheportalterasthiswillensuretheportalterts
properlyintothePortaSlideSystem.Tamporcompressespressogroundsusingthe
tamperasshownbelow(Figure5).Donotoverllpastthemaxlllineasthismight
causecloggingoroverow.
9. SlidetheportalterintothePortaSlideSystemuntilittstightlyintoplaceandisush
withtheunit(Figure6).

Placethedriptrayintheunit(Figure7)andthenplacethedripgrillontopofthedriptray
(Figure8).
12.Takethedemitasse(s)fromthecupwarmerandplaceundertheportalter.Ifyouare
brewingtwodemitasses,placethetwosmallcupsundertheportalterensuringeach
one is directly under one of the two spouts.
13.Turn the dial to select the espresso function; manual, single or double shot.
14.PushtheBrewbutton“

” to begin brewing.The light ring will illuminate and remain
steady until the end of the cycle. If the heater temperature has not been reached, the
amberlightringsofthePowerandBrewButtonswillpulseinsynchronization.Ifthe
lever is not in the locked position, the espresso function will not start and the unlock
iconlightwillash.Ifsettomanualmode,thecentrebuttonwillhavetobepushedto
stop the brewing process.
15. The machine will automatically stop after the brew cycle is complete unless it is in the
manualmode“
+
”.Inmanual,thebrewbutton“
+
” needs to be pressed to stop the
brewcycle.Pressingthebrewbutton“
+
”willcancelanycycleinprocess.Oncethe
cycle is off, the amber light will turn off.
Themanualmodecanbeusedtopreparestronger(lesswater)orweaker(more
water)espressoaccordingtoyourpreference.Tomakethestrongestespresso,usethe
doubleshotlterinthemanualmode“
+
”.
CAUTION: DO NOT LEAVE THE UNIT UNATTENDED WHILE USINGTHE
MANUAL FEATURE SINCETHE BREWING PROCESS MUST BE STOPPED
MANUALLY. THIS WILL AVOID OVERFLOW, SPILLAGE AND POTENTIAL
HAZARDS AND DAMAGES.
16. After the unit has cooled down, push the lever up to the unlocked position

and
removetheportalter.Turntheportalterupsidedown,taptoloosentheespresso
groundsanddiscard(Figure9).Slidethelterreleasebuttonbackwardstoreleasethe
lter.Rinseboththelterandportalterwithwater.
17. If you wish to brew additional espresso, repeat the
process.

18. If not preparing cappuccino, turn the unit off by pressing the power button “
+
”and
then unplug the unit.

PREPARING CAPPUCCINO
Cappuccinoisespressotoppedwithsteamedandfrothedmilk.Frothingmilkforcappuccino
takespractice.Donotbediscouragedifitisnotperfectthersttime.Themilkshouldbe
halfsteamed(bottomofpitcher)andhalffroth(topofpitcher).Itmaytakeafewtimes
before you perfect this process.
Forbestresults,werecommendfrothingthemilkinaseparatepitcherandpouringthemilk
intoyourespresso.Themilkandpitchershouldbecold.Donotuseapitcher,whichhas
just been washed in warm water. We also recommend a stainless steel frothing pitcher and
a beverage thermometer, if you own one, for preparing the best froth and steamed milk.
1.Makesurethewaterreservoirislledwithcoldwater.Neverusewarmorhotwaterto
llthewaterreservoir.
2.Fillasmallstainlesssteelorceramicpitcherabout1/3 full with cold milk and set next to
machine. Skimmed or semi-skimmed milk will be the easiest to froth.
3.Youarenowreadytofrothandsteamyourmilk.Placeapitcherunderthesteamwand
so the tip is immerged about 1.25cm.Turnthesteamdialto“
+
” and then press the
buttontostartfrothing“
+
”. The light ring around the steam button will illuminate and
remain on until the button is pressed again to stop the frothing process. The steam dial
can be turned clockwise for steam. The tip of the steam wand should be slightly angled
andneartheedgeofthepitchertocreatemilkcirculation.Microbubblesshouldbe
forming. If large bubbles are appearing, move the tip until the bubbles become smaller.
4.Continuefrothinguntilthemilkhasalmostdoubledinvolume;milkwillbearound40°C.
Slowlymovethetipofthesteamwandlowerintothemilktocontinuesteaming.Milk
shouldbeheatedtobetween60°Cand71°C.Donotoverheatasthiscanscaldthemilk.
Withthesteamwandstillimmersed,pressthesteambutton“
+
” to end the process.
The light ring around it will turn off. Tap the bottom of the pitcher to eliminate large,
unwanted bubbles.
5.Nowitistimetomakeespresso.Followtheinstructionsinthe“BREWINGESPRESSO”
section to prepare the espresso.
6.Youarenowreadytomakecappuccino.Itis1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3
frothedmilk.Pourtheespressointoacupandusingaspoonorspatulatoblockthe
frothedportion,addthesteamedmilktotheespresso.Finally,spoononthefrothedmilk.
7.Followtheinstructionsinthe“instructionsforuse”sectiontoushoutanyresidualmilk
from the steam wand. It is important to properly clean your steam wand and wash its
sleeve and tip after each use to ensure it continues to work properly.
8.Pressthepowerbutton“

”to turn unit off and unplug the power cord and allow the
machine to cool. Empty the water reservoir.

DAILY CLEANING
1.Pushtheleveruptotheunlockedposition“
+
”and then press the power button to turn
off the unit. Unplug it from the electrical outlet. Ensure appliance is cool.
2.Thesteamwandmaystillbehot.Donottouchitwithyourhandsuntilithascooled.
Remove the steam wand sleeve and wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth. Rinse the
steam wand sleeve in warm water. Unscrew the steam wand tip and clean the steam
wand valve with a needle or toothpick.
3.Discardtheremainingwaterbyremovingthereservoirandturningitupsidedownover
the sink. It is recommended to empty the water reservoir between uses.
4.Thewaterreservoir,lters,tamper,portalter,driptrayanddripgrillcanbewashedwith
soapy water.
CAUTION: Donotimmersetheapplianceinwater.
5.Wipehousingwithasoftwetcloth.Donotuseabrasivecleanersorscouringpads,as
theywillscratchthenish.
6.Theportaltermaybestoredintheunit.
IMPORTANT: To prolong the life of yourVillaWare™EspressoMaker,donotstorethe
unitwiththelockingleverinthelocked“
+
” position.
REGULAR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Descaling your VillaWare™Espresso Maker
Mineraldepositsthathavebuilt-upintheEspressoMakerwillaffecttheoperationofthe
appliance.YourEspressoMakermustbedescaledwhenyoubegintonoticeanincrease
inthetimerequiredtobrewespresso,orwhenthereisexcessivesteaming.Youmayalso
notice build up of white deposits on the surface of the brew head.
Thefrequencyofcleaningdependsuponthehardnessofthewaterused.Thefollowing
table gives the suggested cleaning intervals.
SUGGESTED CLEANING INTERVAL

TO DESCALE WATER RESERVOIR:
1.Makesurethepowerbuttonisoffandthatthepowercordisdisconnectedfromthe
electrical outlet.
2.Fillthereservoirwithfresh,undilutedwhitehouseholdvinegar.Ifdesired,acommercially
available product for descaling espresso machines may be used following the
manufacturer’sinstructions.

3. Allow appliance to sit overnight with the vinegar solution in the water reservoir.
4.Discardvinegarbyremovingthereservoirandturningitupsidedownoverthesink.
5.Rinsethewaterreservoirthoroughlywithtapwaterbyllingtankhalffullwithwaterand
then pouring the water back out into the sink, repeating this step twice.
TO DESCALE INTERNAL PARTS:
1.Makesureyoudescaletheinsideofthewaterreservoirrstbyfollowingthe“Descaling”
steps above.
2.Makesureallcontrolsareintheoffpositionandthepowercordisdisconnectedfrom
theelectricaloutlet.Fillthereservoirwithwhitevinegarabovetheminimumlevel.
3.InserttheportalterwithlterintothePortaSlideSystem.Placeajarontopofthedrip
grillandundertheportalter.
4.Plugthepowercordintotheelectricaloutlet.
5.Pressthepowerbuttontoturntheuniton.Thelightringwillashuntilthebrewing
temperature is reached and then it will be steady on. Turn the espresso brewing dial to
cleaning cycle mode and then press the brewing start button. The cycle will automatically
stop and the amber light will turn off.
6. To clean the steam wand internally, place a cup with cold water under the tip of the
steam wand. Insert the steam wand into the water and press the steam start button
“

”
.
Turn the dial to release steam. Let the steam come out for a few minutes before pressing
thesteambutton“
+
” to stop the steam cycle. This will clean any residue left in the
steam wand. Repeat the process as needed.
7. Repeat steps 1– 6 as necessary using only tap water to rinse any remaining traces of
vinegar out of the machine.

unplug the unit if not in use.

tips and suggestions
THE ESPRESSO GROUNDS
Thebeansshouldbefreshlyground,darkroastedanddesignatedforespresso.Pre-ground
beanswillonlyretaintheiravourfor7–8days,providedtheyarestoredinanairtight
containerandcool,darkarea.Donotstoreinarefrigeratororfreezer.Wholebeansare
recommended to be ground just before use. Espresso beans stored in an airtight container will
keepupto4weeksbeforetheybegintolosetheiravour.Espressopodsmayalsobeused.
THE GRIND
This is a vital step in the espresso making process and takes practice. The espresso ground
mustbeofanegrind.
• Thecorrectgrindshouldlooklikesalt.
• Ifthegrindistoone,thewaterwillnotowthroughtheespressogroundsevenunder
pressure.Thesegrindslooklikepowderandfeellikeourwhenrubbedbetweenngers.
• Ifthegrindistoocoarse,thewaterowsthroughtheespressogroundstoofast,
preventingafullavouredextraction.
Besuretouseaqualitygrinderforuniformconsistency.Ovalshapedgrindersarenot
recommended because the grind is not consistent.
CUPS/DEMITASSES
Fortheoptimumespressotemperature,werecommendkeepingyourcups/demitasses
warm on the cup warming tray on top of your VillaWare™EspressoMaker.
