1 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
All safety procedures described in the CANopen Remote Unit, RUW-01, must
be observed. The RUW-01 manual is available for download on the website:
www.weg.net.

2 GENERAL INFORMATION
This guide orients the installation, configuration and operation of the CANopen
RUW-01 remote unit.
This remote unit offers two versions:
RUW-01 CN14DI10DO: it has 14 digital inputs and 10 digital outputs. It will be
referred to in this guide as RUW-01.00.
RUW-01 CN13DI: it has 13 digital inputs and has no digital outputs. It will be
referred to in this guide as RUW-01.01.
Note: when we refer to both versions, we will use RUW-01.

4 INSTALLATION
The orientation and suggestions must be followed aiming the safety of persons
and equipment, and the correct operation. The procedures are divided into:
Mechanical installation.
Electric installation.

4.1 MECHANICAL INSTALLATION
The RUW-01 remote unit must be installed on a 35 mm DIN rail, Figure 1.

4.2 ELECTRIC INSTALLATION
The RUW-01 is powered by an external 24 Vdc +/- 15 % power supply, with a
current capacity of at least 500 mA.
The protective earth must also be connected. The connection is done through
the XC4 terminal strip.

Terminal 1: (+) 24 Vdc (±15 %).
Terminal 2: (-) GND.
Terminal 3: PE (Protective earth).

4.3 CANOPEN NETWORK CONNECTION
The RUW-01 has a green LED to indicate that the interface is powered.
The CAN communication module has a 5 pole plug-in terminal strip (XC3) with
the following pinout:

CAN power supply
The RUW-01 CAN interface needs an external power supply between the pins 1
and 5 of the network connector. In order to avoid problems of potential difference
among the network devices, it is recommended that the network be supplied at
only one point, and that the power supply be taken to all the devices trough the
cable. If more than one power supply is necessary, they must be referenced to
the same point. The individual consumption and input voltage data are presented
in the next Table 2.

4.4 CONNECTION OF THE DIGITAL INPUTS
For this connection, use cables with gauge AWG 30-16.
RUW-01.00:
The RUW-01.00 presents 14 bidirectional digital inputs that can be activated with
an external 24 Vdc power supply, according to the Figure 3.a.

RUW-01.01:
The RUW-01.01 features 13 bidirectional digital inputs which may be powered by
an external supply of 24 Vdc, as per Figure 3.b.

4.5 CONNECTION OF THE DIGITAL OUTPUTS
For this connection, use cables with gauge AWG 30-16.
RUW-01.00:
The RUW-01.00 presents 10 bidirectional transistor digital outputs with operating
voltage of 24 Vdc and maximum current of 0.5 A each. The Figure 4 illustrates the
digital output connection diagram.

RUW-01.01:
The RUW-01.01 does not have digital outputs.
5 CONFIGURATION
The RUW-01 configuration is done with hexadecimal switches with the following
functions:
S1 and S2: Configuration of the address in the CANopen network.
S3: Baud rate selection.

5.1 CANOPEN NETWORK ADDRESS
The remote unit address is configured through two hexadecimal switches, S1 and
S2, as illustrated in the Figure 6. This address is used to identify the unit in the
CANopen network. It is necessary that every network equipment has an address
different from the all the others.
Valid addresses: 1 to 127 (01h to 7Fh).
ATTENTION!
If the address is changed, it will become valid only after cycling the
power of the RUW-01.
The address selected through the switches represents a hexadecimal value.
Therefore, it must be converted into decimal, whenever necessary, in the CANopen
master parameterization.
The switches that configure the remote unit CAN address are illustrated with
more details in the Figure 6, where the S1 switch is the most significant and the
S2 switch is the least significant one.
The values of the switches, according to the Figure 6, are:
S1 switch = 02h.
S2 switch = 0Eh.
Since the S1 switch is the most significant, the address formed by the switches
is 2Eh or 46 decimal.

5.2 BAUD RATE BAUD RATE
It allows programming the desired baud rate for the CAN interface, in bits per
second. This baud rate must be the same for all the equipments connected to the
network. The RUW-01 has a hexadecimal switch for the baud rate communication
setting, as illustrated in the Figure 6. The remote unit presents the following baud
rates:
0 = 1 Mbit/s.
1 = 800 Kbit/s.
2 = 500 Kbit/s.
3 = 250 Kbit/s.
4 = 125 Kbit/s.
5 = 100 Kbit/s.
6 = 50 Kbit/s.
7 = 20 Kbit/s.
8 = 10 Kbit/s.
NOTE!
The baud rate for all the other values is 1 Mbit/s.
ATTENTION!
If the baud rate is changed, it will become valid only after cycling the
power of the RUW-01.

6 DIAGNOSIS
The RUW-01 presents diagnosis through LED’s that indicate the status of every
digital input and output, and the communication status.

6.1 COMMUNICATION DIAGNOSIS
The communication presents two LED’s: CAN (NET 1) and ERROR (NET 2).
CAN LED (NET 1): CANopen protocol status indication.
ERROR LED (NET 2): CAN interface status indication.
The tables bellow show the behavior of those LED’s in function of the remote unit
status of RUW-01:
