6.0 RUNNING THE ENCODER
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-DME-01 to stream HD video using the VLC media
player for decoding and viewing your stream. In addition to the Z3-DME-01, you will need: a 1080p30/1080i
SDI video source, a Z3-DME-01, a 12V power supply, a PC with the VLC media player downloaded, a coaxial
cable and at least one Ethernet cable.
Please Note: Actual version numbers for your Z3 product may differ from those pictured in this document.
6.1 Setting up the Video Source
(1) Select an HD video source with SDI output.
-Power on the HD source.
-Connect SDI from the source to a monitor.
-Set the HD Source to 1080p30 or 1080i output.
-If you are using a media player, select and begin playback of your content.
Once you see playback on the monitor, you’ve confirmed the source works.
6.2 Connecting and Powering up the Z3-DME-01
(2) Connect the coaxial (BNC to BNC) cable from “SDI Out” on your source to the Z3-DME-01 “SD/HDI
SDI” input.
(3) Connect an Ethernet cable from “Ethernet” on the back of the encoder to a switch, router or other
DHCP server on the same network as your Windows PC.
(4) Connect the 12V power supply, and turn on the power switch. It will take 45-60 seconds to boot.

6.3 Finding the Z3-DME-01 Using ZFinder
ZFinder is a PC Utility that allows you to find any Z3 Technology product on your network. If you have not
yet downloaded this to your computer, you can find it on the USB drive provided with your system.
(5) Verify your PC is set to DHCP. If it is set to a static IP address, ZFinder will be unable to discover
your encoder, or it will appear in red and you will be unable to proceed further.
(6) Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder then
completes a scan of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the network.
In this case, the Z3-DME-01 appears.
(7) Click on the Z3-DME-01 entry in the window to select it. This will cause the “Edit Device,” “Open
Device” and “Flash LEDs” boxes to activate.
*Note:Selecting “Edit Device” allows for manual changes to network settings including the Device
Name, IP Address, Netmask and Gateway address. Selecting “Flash LEDs” causes the status lights
on the encoder to flash and can be useful if there are multiple products connected to the network.
(8) Click on “Open Device.” An internet browser window is opened (for best results, Firefox or Chrome
are recommended) and the HTTP-based graphical user interface (GUI) appears.

6.4 Configuring MPEG-2 TS (UDP) Encode
(9) Verify “Video Source” is “SDI” and “Output Interface” is “ASI+Ethernet(CBR)” .
(10) Change “Output Format” to “MPEG-2 TS”.
(11) You can set the “Dest Address” to:
(a) the IP address of your PC that will be running the VLC media player (in the pictured
example, 192.168.0.6)
(b) or to a multicast address (An example multicast address would be “225.1.2.3”. If you are
on a shared network, check with your Network Administrator.)
(12) Set the “Dest Port” to “8888”.
(13) The encoder may have already started. If it has, click on the “Stop Encoder” button. Once the
status has changed to “Stopped”, click on “Start Encoder.” If the encoder had not started already,
simply click on the “Start Encoder” button.

(14) Run VLC media player on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 3.0.0).
(15) Select Media –Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@225.1.2.3:8888”, ”, where
“225.1.2.3” matches the values of the computer IP address or multicast address entered for “Dest
Address” and 5004 is the value of “Dest Port” set previously.
(16) Press “Enter.”
(17) You will now see video streaming to VLC.

6.6 Streaming RTP
Once you have UDP streaming running, it is relatively simple to change to RTP streaming. All that is
needed is a change of settings. To stream using RTP, do the following steps:
(18) Click on “Stop Encoder”to stop the current encoding session.
(19) Change “Output Interface” to “Ethernet (VBR).”This is necessary because RTP is a variable bit rate
format and is not supported over ASI.
(20) Change “Output Format” from “MPEG-2 TS” to “RTP” (Note: Do not select “MPEG-TS over RTP”).
(21) Click “Start Encoder” to start the encoding session.

(22) Open VLC. Select “Media – Open Network Stream.”
(23) In the “Open Media” box, type “rtsp://192.168.0.65/{name}.mp4”, where “192.168.0.65” is the IP
address of the Z3-DME-01, and {name} is “z3-1” for unicast streaming or “z3-1m” for multicast
streaming. For example, for the settings described previously, since “225.1.2.3” is a multicast
address, the value would be “rtsp://192.168.0.65/z3-1m.mp4”:
(24) Click “Play.” You will then see RTP video streaming on VLC.
*Note: VLC version 2.1.5 or later is needed for RTSP support.

6.7 Dynamically Changing Bit Rate / Frame Rate
It is possible to change two parameters in the middle of an encoding session:
(1) Video Bit rate
(2) Frame Decimation
To change these, simply enter the new desired value and then click the “Start Encoder” button.
The web page will respond with the following message:
Status: Changed rate
The video stream will then continue interrupted with the new parameter.
6.8 Tuning for Latency
For latency, the key parameter to work with is Video Burst Size.
Video Burst Size defines the number of milliseconds of buffering the encoder has to work with. The
higher this value, the more buffering it has to work with and the more time it has to “smooth things out”
for challenging content. However, a higher value also causes latency to increase accordingly. To
minimize latency, this value should be set to the lowest possible value. The lowest value Z3
recommends is 150.
The figure below shows the suggested values for Video Burst Size for three common use cases:
Video Burst Size
Case 1: Highest Quality, Highest Latency
2000
Case 2: Good Quality, Standard Latency
1000
Case 3: Normal Quality, Lowest Latency
150
RTP offers lower latency than UDP, so for the lowest latency you should use RTP.
If you are streaming to VLC, you can reduce latency on the decode side by adjusting the network caching
value. By default, this is set to 1000ms. You can lower this to as low as 200ms. To do this, go to the
following:
VLC →Tools →Preferences →Show Settings (ALL) →Input / Codecs →Network caching (ms)

6.9 Encoding Closed Caption Data
The Z3-DME-01 supports extraction of closed caption data from composite input. This automatically
occurs any time composite input with closed caption data included is used. To utilize this feature,
complete the following:
(1) Connect a composite input with closed caption data to the composite connector (note: A BNC to RCA
adapter may be necessary).
(2) Also connect the audio if available.
(3) Configure the Encoder to use composite input:
(1) Connect composite with CC data
(2) Connect analog audio

(4) Open VLC. Select “Open Network Stream.” If the settings are those as shown above, use the address
“udp://@225.1.2.3:8888”.
(5) In VLC, select “Subtitle – Sub Track –Closed Caption 1”. This configures VLC to use the extracted
closed caption data that the encoder has extracted and encoded. You should then see the subtitles
on the screen:
(6) Extraction of closed caption through SDI input is also possible. In that case, SDI In of the DME-01 is
used. The procedure for seeing the closed caption data through VLC is the same as shown above.

7.0 RUNNING THE DECODER
The Z3-DME-01 can also be configured as a video decoder. This section gives step-by-step instructions on
using the Z3-DME-01 to decode an IP stream. A source generating this stream (for example, another Z3-DME-
01) is required.
7.1 Connect the Decoder
(1) Use a BNC to BNC cable to connect “ASI/SDI Output” on the Z3-DME-01 to an SDI monitor (or to “SDI
In” of an SDI->HDMI converter connected to an HDMI monitor).
