Description and Specications
The Owen Digital Shot Detection System (DSDS) enables the
user to monitor downhole acoustics on the tubular. The system
is particularly well suited for monitoring the ring of Tubing
Conveyed Perforating Guns.
Owen’s DSDS offers state of the art technology to process
and record the acoustic data. The data is stored using a
portable recorder. The signal can be monitored and recorded
simultaneously. The recorded signal can also be digitally stored.

1.0 DSDS Setup and Operation
The Owen DSDS unit is simple to operate and easy to use. The recorder has been preset
to operate at the well site “out of the box” with a few preliminary actions. Familiarize yourself
with the H4n Pro Recorder Operating Manual and the pre-operation checks provided in this
Manual.
1.1 Set-up, Install the Batteries
• Recommendation: Always replace the Batteries before every job! Remove 2 AA Size Batteries
from the package and install in the H4n Recorder:
1.1.1 Slide the cover outward away from the Recorder and lift the lid upward to remove it.
1.1.2 Install the 2 batteries with the polarity shown above.
1.1.3 Install the cover by reversing the steps in ‘A’.

1.2 Connect the SD Card
1.2.1 Ensure power is off
1.2.2 Rotate the lid away from the Recorder to open
1.2.3 Insert the SD card into the slot
1.2.4 Rotate the lid closed
1.3 Function Check
1.3.1 Turn on the Recorder to check that it is operating properly. Move the On/Off switch
DOWNWARD to turn on the Recorder.
1.3.2 Check that the red ‘Track’ light ‘1’ and ‘2’ are on.
1.3.3 Check that the red ‘Stereo’ light is on and the Display is operating.
1.3.4 Turn off the Recorder by moving the On/Off switch UPWARD and holding until the
Recorder is off.

1.4 Connect ther Recorder to the MIC:
Note: For the DSDS System operation it is not necessary for the MIC Power Unit to
have a Battery installed.
1.4.1 Insert the female end of the 25’ MIC Cable (lettering facing up) into the MIC Power
Unit.
1.4.2 Check that the switch on the MIC Power Unit is in the “ON” position and all the way up
as far as possible.
1.4.3 Attach the microphone assembly to the pipe or well head securely using the Velcro
Strap.

1.5 Connect Headphones and Microphone to Recorder
1.5.1 Insert the male connector of the Headphones into the ‘Phones’ jack on the Recorder.
1.5.2 Insert the other end of the 25’ MIC cable into the right hand jack (Input 2) on the botton
of the Recorder.
1.6 Recording
1.6.1 Turning the Recorder on by moving the On/Off switch DOWNWARD to turn on the
Recorded (as done in Step 1.3.1).
1.6.2 Press the REC button once into enter recording standby. The REC button will start
blinking.

1.6.3 Adjust the recording level of the microphone using the toggle found on the right side
of the Recorder.
1.6.4 Press the REC button a socond time to start recording. The REC button will stop
blinking and be solidly lit.
1.6.5 When recording is complete, press the STOP button to end recording. The REC button
light will now be off.
1.6.6 Immediately after recording, the le can be played back by pressing the PLAY/
PAUSE button.
1.7 Create a CD Job Record
1.7.1 Refer to the H4n Pro Recorder Owner’s Manual to create a Job Record by
transferring data onto a CD.
