Staticroutesareuser-denedroutesthatcausepacketsmoving
betweenasourceandadestinationtotakeaspeciedpath.They
areusefulforspecifyingagatewayoflastresorttowhich,all-un-
routablepacketswillbesent.Thestaticroute,unlikeadynamic
route,doesnotsetuptheroutingtablebasedonroutingalgo-
rithm.Whenconguringdynamicroute,sometimesitisneces-
sarytosendroutinginformationoftheentireInternettoarouter ,
whichishardtobearsuchgreatamountofinformation.Inthis
cast,itisnecessarytousestaticroute.
Thestaticrouterequiresfewercongurationsthanthedynamic
route.Inaroutingenvironmentwithmanyroutersandpaths,
however ,itisverydifculttocongurethestaticroute.

istrativedistancevalues.Routingtableonlyshowstherouting
informationwiththeminimumdistancevalue.Whentherouteris
notiedthattherearemultiplecompetitivesourcestoanetwork,
theroutewiththeminimumadministrativedistancevaluehasa
higherpriority.Parameter<distance-metric>iniproutecom-
mandcanbeusedtochangetheadministrativedistancevalueof

Theadministrativedistancevalueoftherstrouteissmaller
thanthatofthesecondone,soonlytheinformationofthe
rstrouteisavailableintheroutingtable.Thatistosay,the
routerreachesthedestinationnetwork192.168.6.0/24through

DefaultRouteConfigurationExample
Aroutermightnotbeabletodeterminetheroutestoallother
networks.T oprovidecompleteroutingcapability,thecommon
practiceistousesomeroutersassmartroutersandgivethere-
mainingroutersdefaultroutestothesmartrouter .(Smartrouters
haveroutingtableinformationfortheentireinternetwork.)These
defaultroutescanbepassedalongdynamicallyandcanbecon-
guredintoindividualrouters.
Mostdynamicinteriorroutingprotocolsincludeamechanismfor
causingasmartroutertogeneratedynamicdefaultinformation
thatisthenpassedalongtootherrouters.
Ifaroutercannotrouteapacket,thepackethastobedropped.
However ,itisnothopedthatthepacketisdroppedinan"un-
known"destination.T osupportcompleteconnectionoftherouter ,
itshouldhavearouteconnectedtoanetwork.Iftherouterwants
tokeepcompleteconnectionandmeanwhiledoesnotneedto
recordeachindependentroute,thedefaultroutecanbeused.By
useofthedefaultroute,anindependentroutecanbedesignated
toindicatealltheotherroutes.

thedefaultrouteintheOSPFdomain,suchanadvertisementis
normallyimplementedbyanASBR(AutonomousSystemBorder
Router)intheOSPFdomain.

RFCstipulatesthatthemaximumhopcountcannotgobeyond16,
soRIPisonlyapplicabletoasmall-sizednetwork.Hopcount16
indicatestheinnitedistanceandthismeansthattherouteisun-
reachable.Besides,thisisamethodforRIPtoidentifyandavoid
routeloop.
RIPonlytakesthehopcountasthemetricanddoesnotconsider
thebandwidth,delayorothervariablefactorsduringtherouting.
RIPalwaystakesthepathwiththeminimumhopcountasthe

optimalpathwhichsometimesresultsinthattheselectedpathis
notthebestone.
AdministrativeDistance(AD)ofRIPis120bydefault.Smallerthe
ADvalue,morereliabletheroutingsourceis.Therefore,compar-
ingwithotherroutingprotocols,RIPisnotsoreliable.
RIPTimer
TherouterrunningRIPsendsaroutinginformationupdatepacket
reectingalltheroutinginformationoftherouteratintervals(30
secondsbydefault),whichiscalledtheroutinginformationan-
nouncement.Ifaroutercannotreceiveupdateinformationfrom
anotherrouterwithinaperiodoftime(180secondsbydefault),
itwilllabeltherouteprovidedbythisrouterasunavailable.If
updateinformationstillcannotbereceivedwithinthesubsequent
periodoftime(240seconds),theroutereliminatestheroutefrom
theroutingtable.Holddowntimerintroducesacertainamountof
skepticismtoreducetheacceptanceofbadroutinginformation.If
thedistancetoadestinationincreases,forexample,thehopcount
increasesfromtwotofour ,theroutersetsaholddowntimerfor
thatroute.Untilthetimerexpires,therouterwillnotacceptany
newupdatesfortheroute.
RIPprovidesfourtimers:

RouteUpdates
RIPsendsrouting-updatemessagesatregularintervalsandwhen
networktopologychanges.Whenarouterreceivesaroutingup-
datethatincludeschangestoanentry,itupdatesitsroutingtable
toreectthenewroute.Themetricvalueforpathisincreasedby
1,andthesenderisindicatedasthenexthop.RIProutersonly
maintainbestroute(theroutewiththelowestmetricvalue)toa
destination.
Afterupdatingitsroutingtable,routerimmediatelytransmitsrout-
ingupdatestoinformothernetworkroutersofthechange.These
updatesaresentindependentlyoftheregularlyscheduledupdates
thatRIProuterssend.
