STEP 2
Attach another brace into the corner of the post and beam assembly. (See photo 3.) You may have to pull
the bottom of the post one way or the other to square it up before you fasten the brace. Put 2 screws
through the beam into the top of the post. (See photo 4.) Repeat steps 1 & 2 for the other 3 posts.

STEP 1
Attach a brace to one of the posts using the 3” screws. (See photo 1.) Make sure this is on the notched end
of the post. Insert the post into the beam assembly. (See photo 2.)

vary based on pergola size (6x8 or 8x8)

STEP 4
Get your helpers to set up the post and beam frames while you climb up on the step ladder and attach the
loose end of the crossbeams to the second post & beam assembly. (See photos 7 & 8.)
STEP 5
Attach the rafters to the beam assembly. Note that each block has an X to one side of it. Place the rafter on
top of this X. (See photo 9.) Insert a 3¼” bolt through the predrilled hole in the rafter and through the block.
(See photo 10.) Screw a flange nut on the bolt. (See photo 11.) Tighten with the ½” wrench or socket.
Repeat with each end of each of the rest of the rafters.
STEP 3
Take 2 crossbeam boards and attach to one of the beam assembly. (See photos 5 & 6.) Repeat with the
other end of the same beam assembly.

STEP 7
The final step, if you intend to hang a swing from your pergola, is to attach the swing hangers to the
bottoms of the rafters. (See photo 15.) They may be placed wherever needed to accommodate the size of
your swing. You will need to predrill the rafters before you insert the 2” lags otherwise the wood may split.
Use a drill bit size ¼” in diameter.
STEP 6
Attach the top strips to the rafters. (See top view of pergola with the rafters attached - photo 12.) Each
rafter should have an X marked at regular intervals. Place the strip on top of the X. (See photo 13.) Fasten
the screws all along the length of the strip to each rafter. (See photo 14.) Note: If the strips are not quite
perfectly straight you should be able to pull them into place as you go along with the screws. Attach all the
top strips in this manner.
