that provides a stable three-phasepower supply with fixed voltageand frequency. The supply
source is likely to beof differentvoltageand frequency tothat requiredby the load.
A typical application of a frequency converter is the supplyof electrical power to a shipwhen it
is in harbor. The shipwill beable to be suppliedwith electrical power without running any on-
boardgenerators. This hasmajor benefits in reduction of noise and pollution, reduction in run-
ning timeof shipboard generators, and overall energy savings.
The SureWave SFCuses ABB’s new generation PCS120 powermodules to convert the incoming
utility to DC, then convert this DC back to 3-phase AC for supplying the loadat the required fre-
quency and voltage. The PCS120 power modules arecompact and efficient, which contribute to
the overallSureWave SFCbeing a compact powerful converter system with afast-dynamic re-
sponse to load changes and ahigh overloadmargin.
The SureWave SFC installation may be stand alone, operatingthe loadwithout anyparallel con-
nected generating capacity. Or it may be connected in parallel with an existinggenerator bus,
whereit maybe started to seamlesslytake over the load from thegenerator(s). Alternatively, it
may beconnectedin parallelto oneor more SureWave SFC. Each of these possibilities is best
catered for by selecting one of severaloperating modes.

–– Operating principle
Refer to Figure5-1: SureWave SFC SLD. The SureWave SFC employsPowerElectronics Building
Blocks (PEBBs) in sets of two. The PEBB connectedto theincoming utility is configuredas an
active rectifier, which converts the incoming ACto DC. The PEBB connectedto the load func-
tions as an inverter, to provide the loadwith clean power at the required voltage and frequency.
The PEBB pairs arethen paralleledto givethe requiredoutput rating, up toa maximum of
2.25MVAat 480Vac output. Morethan one SureWave SFCmay beconnectedin parallel if the to-
tal required ratingexceeds 2.25MVA.
The outputof the SureWave SFC is at a fixedfrequency andvoltage, to suit the loadrequire-
ments. Thanks to thedouble conversion architecture, the output voltage is tolerant to signifi-
cant voltage distortion and transients from incomingvoltage.
5.2.1 Generator mode
In generator mode (VGen)the SFC emulates the behavior of arealrotary generator and thus in-
teractswith the power system in the sameway as a traditionalsynchronous machine. This be-
havior is achieved purelythrough power electronic control and there are no largespinning
masses.
In this mode the SFC can be configured to run as a standalone power sourcewith tighttolerance
voltageand frequency regulation (Isochronous) for a fixed application or as apower sourcerun-
ning in parallel with othergenerators with voltage andfrequency droop enabled.
In generator mode the bumpless load transfer toand from another generator or generators.
The system canalso synchronize to an external bus to connect anothernode tothe outputof
the SureWave SFC.

5.2.2 Power flow control mode
In powerflowcontrol mode (Fix Power), when in parallel with anothersourcethe SFChas the
ability to provide fixed Pand Q power flowon theoutput. This is used when interfacing genera-
tors to a grid where power flow to and from the grid must be controlled.
Setpoints for both real power (P) and reactive power (Q) can be set.

The primary user interface is via adoor mounted touch screen GraphicalDisplay Module (GDM).
The displayis a 10” resistive touchscreen with a user-friendlyintuitive interface.
The integratednavigation screen gives easy accessibility to anyinformation on the SureWave
SFC, it shows the system status and provides access to the operating parameters and event his-
tory. The mimic diagram gives the users a clearviewof the status of thesystem.
