Installation Notes
•Remember to Factory Default the ACTsmart2 before programming
• Remember to place the supplied varistor across the terminals of the door strike coil to protect the relay
contacts
• Don’t mount the ACTsmart2 Prox units near RF sources (Eg mobile phones, radio transmitters,
computer monitors) or metal surfaces.
• Remember that the ACTsmart2 P N and Prox units default to Card operation. Card and P N
operation must be programmed in. (See ACTsmart2 Programmi g Optio s sectio , Optio s 39, 40
a d 41).
• Don’t power the unit from a switch-mode power supply. Use a linear regulated power supply.
• Never use the on-board relay to switchAC mains voltage. An external relay, electrically isolated from
the ACTsmart2 should be used for this purpose
• Remember to change the programming code.
• Don’t power the ACTsmart2 from an AC power supply on a networked system. An AC power supply
may only be used on a standalone ACTsmart2.
•The ACTsmart2 is not compatible with the original HID compatible ACTsmart. The cards and
fobs for one version will not work on the other. The ACTsmart and ACTsmart2 devices may
NOT be networked together.
•When ordering new cards or fobs specify ACTsmart2.
Important
As with any Access Control system, always ensure there is an alternate means of escape in the event of
the unit failing to operate due to power loss or in the event of fire.

(For typical Standalone System)
1. Choose Programming Card.
Select any proximity card or fob as the programming card (it is recommended to use the lowest
numbered card in the batch). The card will only be used for programming and cannot be used to
gain access.
2. Remove tamper and LK1 from the ACTsmart2
Make sure the ACTsmart2 is not powered up and remove the unit from the mounting plate or
the surface mount collar (this opens tamper) and also remove LK1 at the back of the unit.
3. Assign the Programming Card
Apply power to the unit and within 10 seconds present the programming card. The unit will
beep. Take the programming card away from the unit (more than 20cm). Within a further 10
seconds replace LK1. The unit will beep.
The card is now programmed.
Replace the ACTsmart2 on the mounting plate / surface mount collar to close tamper.
4. Add a Card Batch
Present the Programming card followed by the first card in the batch followed by the last card
(highest numbered).
5. tore Programming Card
Put the Programming Card in a safe place in case it is required later to add or remove cards.
The ACTsmart2 is now ready for normal use.

Press ✘button followed by the programming code (default is 9999)
The LED will flash amber.
2. Add a Batch of Cards
Press 10, then present the first card in the batch followed by the last card in the batch.
Press ✔button to complete.
3. Add a PIN Code
Press 12, and then enter a 4-digit P N code.
Press ✔button to complete.
(Option 40 - Card or PIN.)
4. et Desired Door Relay Active Time
Press 20, and then enter the desired number of seconds from 000-255 (three digits with
leading zeros). Press ✔button to complete. The default time is 5 seconds.
5. Change Programming code
Press 23, then enter new 4-digit programming code. Press ✔to complete
6. Exit Programming Mode
Press the ✘button. The LED turns red.
The ACTsmart is now ready for normal use.
Note: The ACTsmart2 may be returned to its factory default condition at any time by entering the
programming mode and pressing 80 followed by the ✔button.

ACTsmart2 Operation
The ACTsmart2 family consists of Proximity Only (ACTsmart2 1070), Pin and Proximity (ACTsmart2
1080) and P N Only (ACTsmart2 1090) units. Each ACTsmart2 can operate in standalone mode or up
to 8ACTsmart2 devices can be connected on a RS485 network.TheACTsmart2 will support a maximum
of 1000 tokens. A token may be a card, keyfob or a P N code. Each unit is contained in a rugged
polycarbonate housing, with stainless steel keys, and potted electronics, allowing for indoor and outdoor
installation.
Programming the unit is achieved via the keys and LED. For quick and easy installation, the ACTsmart2
has a default configuration, which is suitable for most installations. Cards and P N codes can be
programmed into the ACTsmart2 very quickly. ACT recommends that the user keep track of the
Cardholders and P N users on the system by using the User List at the end of the manual. Make copies
of this sheet and enter all User details on it. This will allow users to be deleted later on, even if a card is
lost or a user forgets their P N code. Additional User Lists can be downloaded from the resource section
of our website at www.accesscontrol.ie
To improve security, P N codes can be increased from 4 to 6 digits in length. Normally only card users
are allowed access through the ACTsmart2 P N and Prox unit. For maximum security, the unit may be
programmed to require all users to enter a P N code after presenting a card. For lower security
applications, another programming option allows access to P N only users. A duress code feature is also
available
The built-in inputs and outputs are programmable, allowing the ACTsmart2 to be used in a wide variety
of applications from simple door access, to cash offices and fire exits. Each unit also has built-in tamper
monitoring for improved security.
ACT also provide an easy-to-use PC application (ACTWinSmart), which allows the installer to configure
systems quickly. Up to 8 ACTsmart2 units may be connected to the PC. The end-user may also use
ACTWinSmart to monitor day-to-day activity, add new users etc.
ACTsmart2 Pro rammin
Press the ✘button followed by the programming code (initially 9999). The LED will flash amber while
in programming mode. f ✘is pressed at any time or no key is pressed within 30 seconds, programming
mode is exited. f the LED flashes green during programming, then a card presentation is expected. f
the LED flashes red, then a keypress is expected. While the ACTsmart2 is busy performing a task, (Eg.
Defaulting memory, adding cards), the green led will turn on and the buzzer will sound an elongated
tone.
Note: n most Programming Menus there is a step that is marked (optional)*. This setting only applies
to a Networked System (see Programming a Network System).

Limit Number of Users:
This function is useful if the end-user wants to limit the number of user codes and cards permitted to use
the ACTsmart2. This can on y be performed when the tamper is open (by removing the main unit from
the mounting plate or the surface mount collar).

User Toggle:
This function will toggle the door open or closed when a vaild card or P N is presented. Remember the
Toggle option must be set on the ACTsmart2 (Option 33). To program a card or P N with the toggle
option, program as normal, but press 0 before the ✔key. See the two examples below:

User Arm Function:
A User with arming capability who presses the ✔key and then presents a valid card or enters a valid
P N causes the reader to send a signal to an alarm control panel that may be used to arm/disarm the
panel. This signal is sent via an auxiliary on the reader that is programmed as a “Door Armed Output”.
Option 42 “Arming Door” must be On before the “Door Armed Output” takes effect. f option 43 Pulse
Door Armed is On, a pulsed signal is issued from this output for two seconds. The control panel in turn
may send a signal to the reader to indicate that the panel is armed/disarmed. This signal is received
through an auxiliary on the reader that is programmed as a “PanelArmed nput”. When this signal is low
the door is locked and access is prohibited. Check the alarm panel wiring diagram at the end of the
manual.
To program a card or P N with the arm function, program as normal, but press 9 before the ✔key. See
the two examples below:

Adding a PIN Code wit Arming Function:
To summarise, the following steps are required for setting up tokens to arm and disarm alarm panels:
1. Program the ACTsmart2 to be an Arming Door - Option 42 On
2. Assign a card or P N with the Arming function - see above.
3. Assign an Aux /O as the Door Armed output - I/O Function Code 14
4. f required, turn the Pulse Door Armed Option on - Option 43 On
5. f required, assign an input as the Panel Armed input. This input verifies when the alarm panel is
actually armed. - I/O Function Code 15
6. Connect up according to the Alarm Panel wiring diagram.

Programming ACTsmart2 Options:
Option Function Default Operation
30 Door Chime Off When set, whenever the door contact is opened, the built-in buzzer
makes a chime sound and the buzzer output activates for 2 seconds
31 Silent Operation Off When set, the keypad operates silently. No audible tones
(key-presses or confirm tones) are produced from the built-in
buzzer
32 Lock-saver Off When set, and when the door relay is active (following a valid code
(Anti Tailgating) or button release), the door relay timer is truncated to 2 seconds
when the door contact opens. This ensures that the door will be
locked as soon as it closes, and any person following will have to

33 Toggle Off When set, the door relay toggles for each valid entry. The green
LED flashes when the door is toggled open.
34 Door Forced Alarm On When set, the buzzer output / door alarm output is activated if the
door contact opens when the door is locked. The output is
deactivated when a valid card or P N is next entered. This is
useful for monitoring fire doors etc.
35 Door Ajar Alarm On When set, and the door contact has been open for longer than the
time programmed into the door ajar timer, the buzzer output / door
alarm output is activated. Closing the door and presenting a valid
card or entering a valid P N deactivates the output.
36 Guest Button On When set, (default) and when the ✔key on the keypad is pressed,
the buzzer output is activated for the duration programmed in the
guest buzzer timer.
37 Duress Codes Off When set, and when a duress P N is entered, the door is opened
normally and the Door Alarm output activated. A duress P N is
any valid P N with one added to the last digit. The output will be
reset when a valid user enters. When the duress option is set,
avoid using P Ns that are different by 1.
38 Network Master Off Set one device on the network to be the Master.
39 Card and P N Off When set, only Card and P N users are admitted. This is only valid
for ACTsmart2 P N and PROX units (1080).
40 Card or P N Off When set, either a valid Card or valid P N will open the door. This
is only valid for ACTsmart2 P N and PROX units (1080).
41 Card and any P N Off n this mode, a valid card and any valid P N code will open the door.

mode allows all users to have a common P N code to use with their cards.
42 Arming Door Off n this mode, users with the Arm option can switch an output to
signal to an Alarm panel to arm/disarm (See /O function code 14).

14 Door Armed This output toggles when a user with the armed function presses the ✔key and
then presents a valid card or P N. This can be used to arm or disarm an alarm panel.
The output may be set to pulse for 2 seconds instead of toggle. See Option 43.
15 Panel Armed Input When this input is low, the door is locked and the red LED flashes. This input
informs the ACTsmart2 that the panel is armed. (See the Alarm Panel Wiring
diagram).

Pro rammin a Network System
Up to 8 ACTsmart2 devices can be connected on the network. See the ACTsmart2 Network nstallation
diagram to complete the necessary connections.
Programming Door Numbers
To allow some users through a door and prevent access to other users, each ACTsmart2 on the network
must be given a door number (1-8). An ACTsmart2 Proximity Only unit (1070) requires a door number
if it is to be programmed with advanced options.
et a Master
Set one device on the network to be the Master. This device will be used for programming the entire
network and should be a P N and Prox unit (1080). The Master is automatically assigned door number
1. The other ACTsmart2’s on the network (door numbers 2-8) are referred to as Slave Units. No
programming is allowed on a Slave (except to default it - see Restoring Factory Defaults).
Enter programming mode. Press buttons 3,8 followed by 1 to set the device to be the Master. The rest of
the units on the network are assigned door numbers by following the procedure below:

Assigning Users to Doors
When each ACTsmart2 has been given a unique door number, then users may be given access through
specific doors. n most programming menus, there is an optional step to program specific doors. For
example, when programming a Card Batch, the user may select which doors the Card Batch applies to
(Step 4 inAdding Card Batch, see above). Skip this optional step if programming is to apply to all doors
on the network.
Checking Network Programming
The door number of any ACTsmart2 on the network can be found using the following menus. This is a
useful check to perform to verify communications from the Master to the Slave units and to check that
the Door Numbers have been assigned correctly.

Adding a lave to the Network
Another Slave can be added to the network by defaulting it first (see below) and then assigning it a
door number from the Master.
Removing a lave from the Network
To remove a Slave unit from the network, simply disconnect it from the network.
Replacing a lave Unit
To replace a Slave Unit, remove the old Slave from the network. Default the new Slave and add it to
the network. Assign a door number to it from the Master.
Replacing the Master Unit
f the Master Unit needs to be replaced, then replace it with a Slave unit already on the system, (as
it will have all the card/P N information), and make it the Master. Add a new, defaulted Slave to the
network in place of the swapped-out Slave. Then assign a Door numbers to the new Slave - make sure
it is the Door number of the old Slave.
Restorin Factory Defaults
Enter Programming code followed by 80 followed by ✔. f this is done on the Master ACTsmart2
then all ACTsmart2’s on the network are defaulted (including the Master). f it is done on a Slave
then only the Slave is defaulted.
f the programming code has been forgotten, power up with the tamper open (by removing the main
unit from the mounting plate or the surface mount collar), while holding down the ✘key. Release the
✘key and then enter the default Programming Code (9999).
Defaulting memory takes 3-4 seconds. During this time, the buzzer will sound an elongated tone.

Pro rammin ACTsmart2 Prox Only (1070)
To program an ACTsmart2 Prox Only device (1070), a Programming Card must be assigned to the
ACTsmart2. The Programming Card may be any proximity card. f you have received a batch of
cards, it is recommended to use the first (lowest numbered) card in the batch as the Programming
Card. To set the Programming Card into the ACTsmart2 Prox do the following:
1. Power up the device with LK removed and the tamper open (by removing the main unit from
the mounting plate or the surface mount collar). Within 10 seconds of power up carry out the
following actions.
2. Present the card to the reader.
3. Take the card away from the reader for 1 second (more than 20 cm)
4. Within a further 10 seconds replace LK . The reader will beep.
5. The card is now set as the Programming card. Replace the ACTsmart2 on the mounting plate /
surface mount collar to close tamper.
(Note:ACT recommends using an ACTsmart2 P N and Prox device (1080) if a network is required).
n the steps below, after a card is presented to the reader it must be taken away from the reader (more
than 20cm) for 1 second before presenting the card again.
