USING THIS MANUAL
Two types of messages, identified by icons, appear in the text.
INSPECTING SHIPMENT
Upon receipt of the equipment:
•Unpack each container and inspect the contents for signs of damage. If the equipment has been damaged in
transit, immediately report the extent of damage to the transportation company and to ADC DSL Systems,
Inc. Order replacement equipment, if necessary.
•Check the packing list to ensure complete and accurate shipment of each listed item. If the shipment is short
or irregular, contact ADC DSL Systems, Inc. as described in “Product Support” on page 15. If you must store
the equipment for a prolonged period, store the equipment in its original container.
Notes contain information about special circumstances.
Genenral cautions indicate the possibility of personal injury, product failure, or equipment
damage if instructions are ignored or not completely followed.

OVERVIEW
The ADC®WorldDSL™ EMS-830T (Figure 1) is an exchange office management shelf (EMS) that fits into a
600 mm or 19-inch rack. The EMS-830T accommodates up to 16 WorldDSL line-termination unit (LTU) or
universal termination unit (UTU) High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL) E1 cards with a 75Ωunbalanced
input. You can also install one WorldDSL EMS-830T exchange office management unit.

All wiring for the EMS-830T is on the back of the shelf (see Figure 2). EMS-830T features are described in
Table 1 on page 3.

Before disconnecting any cables that are attached to the HDSL connectors, be sure to
completely loosen the screws that secure the cable.

COMPATIBILITY
The EMS-830T is compatible with the WorldDSL products listed in Table 2.

(SNMP) connection.
EXT CLK (External Clock) 1 Provides 2 MHz clock reference for HDSL cards (per G.703, paragraph 10). An
EMU-83X management unit must be installed to enable this feature.
HDSL connectors 2 Connects HDSL pairs to the EMS-830 shelf through the two 50-pin Telco connectors
(HDSL 1-8, HDSL 9-16).
Five-position -48 Vdc
power-terminal strip 1 Connects DC power to the shelf through the five-position power terminal strip.
D25F RS-485 connector 1 Connects a network management serial interface to the shelf through the RS-485
(D25F) connector (SLIP port).
D25F Alarm connector 1 Connects alarm relay circuits to the shelf through the DB25 Alarms connector.

INSTALLATION
Before you install the EMS-830T, inspect the shipping carton for the components listed below. Notify the carrier
immediately if damages are found. Your shipment should consist of:
•One EMS-830T shelf
•One Installation Kit (part number 130-1049-01A)
•This document
To ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, carefully observe the following safety rules:
To ensure that your equipment does not become damaged, carefully observe the following cautions:
MOUNTING
Beforeyoucan use an EMS-830T shelf, you should mount it intoa 19-inch or 600 mm rack. The EMS-830T shelf
ships with the mounting brackets in place for mounting in a 19-inch rack. If you need to mount the EMS-830T in
a 600 mm rack, you must remove the mounting brackets and reverse their position on the EMS-830T chassis. The
screws required to mount the EMS-830T on a rack are contained in the Installation Kit included in the shipping
carton.
In rack-mounted installations, leave an unobstructed gap of a minimum of 44.5mm (1.75
inch, 1U rack height) on top and bottom of shelves to maintain the required air flow for
cooling.
Be careful when installing or modifying telephone lines. Dangerous voltages can be
present.
It is unsafe to install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
Always disconnect all telephone lines and power connections before servicing or
disassembling this equipment.
For performance and safety reasons, only power supplies listed for use with telephone
equipment by a locallyrecognized organization should be used withWorldDSL equipment.
All wiring external to the product should follow the local wiring codes. This unit operates
with hazardous voltages. Caution should be exercised during installation and removal of
the cards. Prevent hands and other objects from going inside the slots since dangerous
voltages can be present internally. Any empty slots should be covered with blank slot
faceplates.
If a problem has been isolated to this unit, do not attempt to repair it. The unit's components
are not user serviceable and, therefore, must not be replaced. Please return the unit to ADC
for repairs.
