INTRODUCTION
Please read and understand the instructions in this manual carefully and thoroughly before attempting
to operate this device. These instructions contain important safety and use information.
This product is intended for use by professionally trained personnel only, and is not suitable for
private use.
Unpacking
Every device has been thoroughly tested and has been shipped in perfect operating condition. Carefully
check the shipping carton for damage that may have occurred during shipping. If the carton is damaged,
carefully inspect the device for damage, and be sure all accessories necessary to install and operate
the device have arrived intact. In the event damage has been found or parts are missing, please contact
our customer support team for further instructions. Please do not return this device to your dealer
without rst contacting customer support. Please do not discard the shipping carton in the trash. Please
recycle whenever possible.

LIMITED WARRANTY (USA ONLY)
A. ADJ Products, LLC hereby warrants, to the original purchaser, ADJ Products, LLC products to be free of manufacturing
defects in material and workmanship for a prescribed period from the date of purchase (see specic warranty period
on reverse). This warranty shall be valid only if the product is purchased within the United States of America, including
possessions and territories. It is the owner’s responsibility to establish the date and place of purchase by acceptable
evidence, at the time service is sought.
B. For warranty service, you must obtain a Return Authorization number (RA#) before sending back the product-please
contact ADJ Products, LLC Service Department at 800-322-6337. Send the product only to the ADJ Products, LLC
factory. All shipping charges must be pre-paid. If the requested repairs or service (including parts replacement) are
within the terms of this warranty, ADJ Products, LLC will pay return shipping charges only to a designated point within
the United States. If the entire instrument is sent, it must be shipped in its original package. No accessories should be
shipped with the product. If any accessories are shipped with the product, ADJ Products, LLC shall have no liability
whatsoever for loss of or damage to any such accessories, or for the safe return thereof.
C. This warranty is void of the serial number has been altered or removed; if the product is modied in any manner which
ADJ Products, LLC concludes, after inspection, affects the reliability of the product, if the product has been repaired or
service by anyone other than ADJ Products, LLC factory unless prior written authorization was issued to purchaser by
ADJ Products, LLC; if the product is damaged because not properly maintained as set forth in the instruction manual.
D. This is not a service contact, and this warranty does not include maintenance, cleaning or periodic check up. During
the period specied above, ADJ Products, LLC will replace defective parts at its expense with new or refurbished parts,
and will absorb all expenses for warrant service and repair labor by reason of defects in material or workmanship. The
sole responsibility of ADJ Products, LLC under this warranty shall be limited to the repair of the product, or replacement
thereof, including parts, at the sole discretion of ADJ Products, LLC. All products covered by this warranty were
manufactured after August 15, 2012, and bear identifying marks to that effect.
E. ADJ Products, LLC reserves the right to make changes in design and/or improvements upon its products without any
obligation to include these changes in any products theretofore manufactured.
F. No warranty, whether expressed or implied, is given or made with respect to any accessory supplied with products
described above. Except to the extent prohibited by applicable law, all implied warranties made by ADJ Products, LLC
in connection with this product, including warranties of merchantability or tness, are limited in duration to the warranty
period set forth above. And no warranties, whether expressed or implied, including warranties of merchantability or
tness, shall apply to this product after said period has expired. The consumer’s and/or Dealer’s sole remedy shall be
such repair or replacement as is expressly provided above; and under no circumstances shall ADJ Products, LLC be
liable for any loss or damage, direct or consequential, arising out of the use of, or inability to use, this product.
G. This warranty is the only written warranty applicable to ADJ Products, LLC Products and supersedes all prior warranties
and written descriptions of warranty terms and conditions heretofore published.

SAFETY GUIDELINES
• To reduce the risk of electrical shock or re, do not expose this unit to rain or moisture.
• Do not spill water or other liquids into or onto the unit.
• Do not attempt to operate this unit if the power cord has been frayed or broken.
• Do not attempt to remove or break off the ground prong from the electrical cord. This prong
is used to reduce the risk of electrical shock or re in the event of an internal short.
• Disconnect from main power before making any type of connection.
• Do not remove the cover for any reason. There are no user serviceable parts inside.
• Never operate this unit with the cover removed.
• Never plug this unit into a dimmer pack.
• Always be sure to mount this unit in an area that will allow proper ventilation. Allow about
6-in. (15cm) between this device and a wall.
• Do not attempt to operate this unit if it has been damaged in any way.
• This unit is intended for indoor use only. Use of this product outdoors voids all warranties.
• During long periods of non-use, disconnect the unit’s main power.
• Always mount this unit in safe and stable matter.
• Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched
by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to the point at which the
cords exit from the unit.
• Cleaning - The xture should be cleaned only as recommended by the manufacturer. See the
Cleaning section of this manual for details.
• Heat - The appliance should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat
registers, stoves, or other appliances (including ampliers) that produce heat.
• The xture should be serviced by qualied service personnel when:
A. The power-supply cord or the plug has been damaged.
B. Objects have fallen onto, or liquid has been spilled into, the xture.
C. The xture has been exposed to rain or water.
D. The xture does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance.
E. The xture has fallen and/or has been subjected to extreme handling.

MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES
DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE PERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE!
FUSE REPLACEMENT
Disconnect the unit from its power source. Remove the power cord from the unit. Once the cord has
been removed, use a at-head screw driver to unscrew the fuse holder. Remove the bad fuse and
replace it with a new one.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Unit not responding to DMX:
• Check that the DMX cables are connected properly and are wired correctly (pin 3 is “hot”; on some
other DMX devices, pin 2 may be ‘hot’). Also, check that all cables are connected to the right
connectors; it does matter which direction the inputs and outputs are connected.
CLEANING
Frequent cleaning is recommended to ensure proper function, optimized light output, and an extended
life. The frequency of cleaning depends on the environment in which the xture operates: damp, smoky,
or particularly dirty environments can cause greater accumulation of dirt on the xture’s optics. Clean
the external lens surface periodically with a soft cloth to avoid dirt/debris accumulation.
NEVER use alcohol, solvents, or ammonia-based cleaners.
MAINTENANCE
Regular inspections are recommended to ensure proper function and extended life.
There are no user serviceable parts inside this xture, please refer all other service issues to an
authorized ADJ service technician. Should you need any spare parts, please order genuine parts from
your local ADJ dealer.
Please refer to the following points during routine inspections:
- A detailed electrical check by an approved electrical engineer every three months, to make sure the
circuit contacts are in good condition in order to prevent overheating.
- Be sure all screws and fasteners are securely tightened at all times. Loose screws may fall out
during normal operation, resulting in damage or injury as larger parts could fall.
- Check for any deformations on the housing, color lenses, rigging hardware, and rigging points
(ceiling, suspension, trussing). Deformations in the housing could allow for dust or liquids to enter
into the xture. Damaged rigging points or unsecured rigging could cause xture to fall and seriously
injure a person(s).
- Electric power supply cables must not show any damage, material fatigue, or sediments.
-NEVER remove the ground prong from the power cable.

FLAMMABLE MATERIAL WARNING
Keep xture minimum 0.7 feet (0.2m) away from ammable materials and/or pyrotechnics.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
A qualied electrician should be used for all electrical connections and/or installations.

Fixture MUST be installed following all local, national, and country commercial electrical and construction
codes and regulations.
Before rigging/mounting a single xture or multiple xtures to any metal truss/structure or placing the
xture(s) on any surface, a professional equipment installer MUST be consulted to determine if the
metal truss/structure or surface is properly certied to safely hold the combined weight of the xture(s),
clamps, cables, and accessories.
Fixture ambient operating temperature range is 0° to 104°F. (0° to 40°C).
Do not Use xture under or above this temperature.
Fixture(s) should be installed in areas outside walking paths, seating areas, or away from areas were
unauthorized personnel might reach the xture by hand.
NEVER stand directly below the xture(s) when rigging, removing or servicing.
Overhead xture installation must always be secured with a secondary safety attachment, such as an
appropriately rated safety cable.
Allow approximately 15 minutes for the xture to cool down before servicing.
RIGGING
Overhead rigging requires extensive experience, including among others calculating working
load limits, installation material being used, and periodic safety inspection of all installation
material and the xture. If you lack these qualications, do not attempt the installation yourself.
Improper installation can result in bodily injury.

POTENTIAL INTERNAL FIXTURE DAMAGE FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES OF LIGHT BEAMS
External sources of light beams from direct sunlight, lighting moving head xtures, and lasers, which
are focused directly towards the exterior housing and/or penetrate the front lens opening of ADJ lighting
xtures, can cause severe internal damage including burning to optics, dichroic color lters, glass
and metal gobos, prisms, animation wheels, frost lters, iris, shutters, motors, belts, wiring, discharge
lamps, and LEDs.
This issue is not specic to ADJ lighting xtures, it is a common issue with lighting xtures from all
manufacturers. Although there is no true way to fully prevent this issue from happening, the following
guidelines can prevent any potential damage from occurring if followed. Contact ADJ Service for more
details.
DO NOT EXPOSE THE FIXTURE AND/OR FRONT LENS OPENING TO LIGHT BEAMS FROM
DIRECT SUNLIGHT, OTHER LIGHTING MOVING HEAD FIXTURES, AND LASERS WHILE
UNPACKING, INSTALLATION, USE, AND EXTENDED IDLE TIMES OUTDOORS. DO NOT FOCUS
A LIGHT BEAM FROM ONE LIGHTING FIXTURE DIRECTLY TOWARDS ANOTHER.

DMX SETUP
DMX-512: DMX is short for Digital Multiplex. This is a universal protocol used as a form of communication
between intelligent xtures and controllers. A DMX controller sends DMX data instructions from the
controller to the xture. DMX data is sent as serial data that travels from xture to xture via the DATA
“IN” and DATA “OUT” XLR terminals located on all DMX xtures (most controllers only have a DATA
“OUT” terminal).
DMX Linking: DMX is a language allowing all makes and models of different manufactures to be
linked together and operate from a single controller, as long as all xtures and the controller are DMX
compliant. To ensure proper DMX data transmission, when using several DMX xtures try to use the
shortest cable path possible. The order in which xtures are connected in a DMX line does not inuence
the DMX addressing. For example; a xture assigned a DMX address of 1 may be placed anywhere in
a DMX line, at the beginning, at the end, or anywhere in the middle. When a xture is assigned a DMX
address of 1, the DMX controller knows to send DATA assigned to address 1 to that unit, no matter
where it is located in the DMX chain.
Data Cable (DMX Cable) Requirements (For DMX Operation): The
Focus Flex can be controlled via DMX-512 protocol. Your unit and your
DMX controller requires a 5-pin XLR connector for data input/output. We
recommend Accu-Cable DMX cables. If you are making your own cables,
be sure to use standard 110-120 Ohm shielded cable (This cable may be
purchased at almost all pro lighting stores). Your cables should be made
with a male and female XLR connector on either end of the cable. Also
remember that DMX cable must be daisy chained and cannot be split.
Notice: Be sure to follow gures two and three when making your own
cables. Do not use the ground lug on the XLR connector. Do not connect
the cable’s shield conductor to the ground lug or allow the shield conductor
to come in contact with the XLR’s outer casing. Grounding the shield could
cause a short circuit and erratic behavior.
Special Note: Line Termination. When longer runs of cable are used, you may need to use a terminator
on the last unit to avoid erratic behavior. A terminator is a 110-120 ohm 1/4 watt resistor which is con-
nected between pins 2 and 3 of a male XLR connector (DATA + and DATA -). This unit is inserted in the
female XLR connector of the last unit in your daisy chain to terminate the line. Using a cable terminator
(ADJ part number Z-DMX/T) will decrease the possibilities of erratic behavior.

SYSTEM MENU
DMX Addressing: Operating through a DMX controller gives the user the freedom to create custom
programs tailored to their own individual needs.
1. To run your fixture in DMX mode, press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Set ADDR” is displayed.
Press the ENTER button and “Set ADDR XXX” will be displayed. “XXX” represents the currently
selected address.
2. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to find your desired DMX address and press ENTER to save the
address.
3. Please refer to the DMX Traits section of this manual for detailed information.
4. After you have chosen your desired DMX Channel mode (see below), plug in the fixture via the
XLR connections to any standard DMX controller.
DMX Channel Mode: The Encore FR50z has 6 DMX channel modes. This submenu will allow you to
choose the DMX mode with which the fixture will operate.
1. To select your desired DMX channel mode, press the MODE button until “UserMode” is displayed.
Press the ENTER button and the currently selected DMX channel mode will be displayed.
2. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to find your desired DMX channel mode and press ENTER to save
your selection.
3. Please refer to the DMX Traits section of this manual for detailed information.
4. After you have chosen your desired DMX Channel mode, plug in the fixture via the XLR
connections to any standard DMX controller.
DMX State: This setting defines how the fixture will behave when the DMX signal is lost or
interrupted. You can also set this as the operating mode you would like the unit to return to when it is
powered up.
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Menu Function” is displayed. Press
the ENTER button.
2. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to scroll to “NO DMX” and press ENTER. Use the UP or DOWN
buttons to toggle between the two choices:
• “Black” (Blackout) - If the DMX signal is lost or interrupted, the unit will automatically go into
stand by mode.
• “Hold” (Last State) - If the DMX signal is lost or interrupted, the fixture will stay in the most
recently configured DMX set up.
3. Once you have found your desired mode, press ENTER to confirm. Press MODE to exit to the
main menu.
LCD Set Up: In this submenu, you are able to adjust the settings for the LCD display. You can pro-
gram the display to blackout after 30 seconds, lock the buttons, or make the display flash.
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Menu Function” is displayed. Press
ENTER to select.
2. Press the UP or DOWN buttons to scroll to “LCD.Set” and press ENTER.
3. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to make your desired adjustments in each submenu. Press the
ENTER button to move to the next adjustment submenu.
4. Press the MODE button to exit and return to the main menu.
NOTE: This fixture features two variations of the control panel lockout, as described below. These can
be selected from the main system menu, by navigating to MENU Function > LCD Set > Key Lock.
• When Display sub menu is set to ON, the LCD display backlight will turn OFF after 30 seconds. At
this point, the Control Panel buttons will lock, and the display will show Locked. To unlock, press
and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds.
• When Display sub menu is set to ON1, the LCD display backlight will turn OFF after 30 seconds. At
this point, the Control Panel will lock, and the display will show LOCKED*****. To unlock, press UP,
DOWN, UP, DOWN, ENTER, in that order. With each button press, one * will disappear from the
display until the display unlocks.

Unit Temperature: With this function, you can switch the temperature display between Celsius or
Fahrenheit.
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Menu Function” is displayed. Press
the ENTER button.
2. Press the UP or DOWN buttons to scroll to “TEMP” and press ENTER.
3. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to switch between “Celsius” or “Fahren”.
4. Press ENTER to confirm your selection or press the MODE button to exit and return to the main
menu.
Dimmer Curve Setting:
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Menu Function” is displayed. Press
the ENTER button.
2. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to scroll to “DimCurve” and press ENTER.
3. There are 6 dimmer curve settings to choose from. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to scroll
through the different dimmer curve setting. Please refer to the Dimmer Curve Chart section of this
manual for detailed information on dimmer curves.
4. Press the MODE button to exit and return to the main menu.
Display Set Up: In this submenu, you are able to select what main display will show. In this sub-
menu you are able to designate the unit as the “Secondary” in Primary-Secondary mode.
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Menu Function” is displayed. Press
the ENTER button.
2. Press the UP or DOWN buttons to scroll to “Disp.Set” and press ENTER.
3. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to find you desired setting and press ENTER.
4. Press the MODE button to exit and return to the main menu.
Software Update (USB Data): This submenu is used for any future software updates. Check online
at www.adj.com for any software updates. Download the software update to a flash stick and plug the
flash stick into the Flash Drive slot located on the side of the unit.
NOTE: Contact ADJ customer service for help and guidance when updating software.
Default Running Mode: This is a default running mode. When this mode is activated all modes will
return to their default settings.
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Menu Function” is displayed. Press
ENTER.
2. Press the UP or DOWN buttons to scroll to “DFSE” and press ENTER.
3. Press the UP and DOWN buttons to switch between “ON” or “OFF”. To reset the unit to factory
settings select “ON” and press ENTER. Press the MODE button to exit the submenu with no
changes.
Time Infomation: In this submenu you are able to check the current running time, total running time,
last time the running time was cleared, and clear the running time.
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Info” is displayed.
2. Press the ENTER button and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “TimeInfo” is displayed, and
press ENTER.
3. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to find the time information you would like to check. Press the
ENTER button to access your desired time information.
4. To clear the current running time, press UP or DOWN buttons until “TimerPin” is displayed, and
press ENTER. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to enter in the password “050”, a press ENTER.
5. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to select “ON”, and press ENTER.
6. Unplug the fixture, then plug it back in. The current running time should now be cleared.
7. Press the MODE button to exit and return to the “Infor” menu. Press MODE again to exit and
return to the main menu.

3. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to find the time information you would like to check. Press the
ENTER button to access your desired time information.
Software Infomation: In this submenu you are able to check the fixture’s current software.
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Info” is displayed.
2. Press the ENTER button and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Software” is displayed, then
press ENTER.
3. The current software version will now be displayed. Press the MODE button to exit.
Manual Dimmer Mode:
1. Plug the fixture in and press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Menu Manual” is displayed, then
press ENTER.
2. “ManCtrl Dimmer” will be displayed. Press the ENTER button to access the dimmer adjustment
submenu.
3. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to adjust the dimmer intensity. When you are finished adjusting
the intensity, press ENTER.
4. Press the UP or DOWN buttons to switch to “ManCtrl Strobe” and press ENTER. Follow the val-
ues listed under the “DMX Strobe” channel in the DMX Traits section of this manual.

PRIMARY-SECONDARY CONFIGURATION
This function allows the units to be linked together to run in a Primary-Secondary set-up. In this
type of set up, one unit will act as the controlling unit, and the others will react to the controlling
units built-in programs. Any unit can act as a Primary or as a Secondary, but only one unit can be
programmed to act as the “Primary.”
Primary-Secondary Connections and Settings:
1. Daisy chain your units via the XLR connectors on the rear panel of each unit. Use standard XLR
data cables to link your units together. Remember that the male XLR connector is the input and
the female XLR connector is the ouput. The first unit in the chain (primary) will use the female XLR
connector only, and the last unit in the chain will use the male XLR connector only.
2. Connect the first “Secondary” unit to the “Primary.”
3. Set the “Primary” unit to your desired mode of operation.
4. On the “Secondary” units, press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Function” is displayed, and press
ENTER. Press the UP or DOWN buttons until “Disp.Set” is displayed and press ENTER. Press the
UP or DOWN buttons until “Secondry” is displayed and press ENTER.
5. The “Secondary” unit(s) will now follow the “Primary”.
6. To exit “Secondary” mode, press the MODE button.
7. To fully exit “Secondary” mode, you will need to follow steps 3 and 4 and set the display to
“ADDR” and press ENTER.
MULTIPLE UNIT POWER LINKING
With this feature you can connect the xtures using the Power input and output sockets. A maximum
of 7 xtures can be connected: (7x) @ 120V and 14 xtures @ 240V. After the maximum connected
xtures, you will need to use a new power outlet.
