2.5.1 2nd Button
• Selectsthesecondfunction(highlightedinyellow)onthebuttons.
• The symbol appears. This symbol disappears upon pressing the
functionbuttonchosen,exceptifthebuttonisactivated.Inthiscase,it
onlydisappearswhenthe buttonispressedagain,orifotherfunction
buttonsarepressed.Thisallowsyoutorapidlydecreaseparameterswith
thebutton,withouthavingtopressthe buttoneverytime.
2.5.2 V-TIME / Button
First Function - V/TIME
Displaysallthesecondaryinformationavailableonthesmalldisplay.
For Insulation Measurement:
• Thetimeelapsedsincethestartofthemeasurement.
• Thevoltagebetweentheinstrument’s“+”and“–”terminals.
• Date,time,testvoltageandOBJ:TESTnumberinmemoryrecallmode
(MR).
Second Function - Time-controlled Test
DisplaysthemeasurementdurationprogrammedinSET-UPonthesmalldisplay.
• The symbollightsup.
• PressingtheSTARTbuttonbeginsthemeasurementprocess.Themea-
surementdurationissetto15minutesbydefault.
• Assoonasthemeasurementstarts,thesmalldisplaycountsdownthe
remainingdurationofthemeasurement.Onceitreacheszero,themea-
surementstops.
• As the time-controlled test is carried out, interval samples (resistance/
voltagevaluesasafunctionoftime)areautomaticallysaved.Thetime
betweeneachsampleissetto30sbydefault,butitcanbechangedin
theSET-UPmenu.
• ThesamplesaredisplayedwiththeR(t)function(see§2.5.3)aslongas
anewmeasurementhasnotbeenstarted.Witheachnewmeasurement,
the previous sample value is erased from the memory. These sample
values are saved with the last value of the resistance if used with the
MEM (memorystorage)function.
NOTE: If the selector switch’s position is altered, or if the STOP button is pressed
during measurement, the measurement is interrupted.
This function is only active for insulation measurement.

First Function - R-DAR-PI-DD
TheR-DAR-PI-DDbuttonallowsautomaticmeasurementof:
• DielectricAbsorptionRatio(DAR)
• PolarizationIndex(PI)
• DielectricDischargeTest(DD)
ThePIandDARvaluesareusefulonlongcables,orwhenmonitoringtheagingof
insulationonelectricalmachines.
Onthismaterial,measurementisadverselyaectedatthebeginning,duetointer-
fering currents (from capacitive charges, dielectric absorption) which eventually
canceleachotherout.Therefore,inordertogetanaccuratemeasurementofthe
leakagecurrent,itisnecessarytocarryoutthemeasurementoveralongperiod
oftime,toreducetheinuenceofanyinterferingcurrentsatthebeginningofthe
measurement.
ThenthePIortheDAR ratiosarecalculated:
PI*=R10min/R1 min(2valuesrecordedduringa10minutemeasurement)
DAR=R1 min/R30s(2valuesrecordedduringa1minutemeasurement)
Thequalityofinsulationdependsontheresultsfound.

*The 10 and 1 minute times can be modied in the SET-UP menu, to adapt to any changes or specic
applications.
Formulti-layerinsulation,ifoneofthelayersisdefective,butalltheothersshow
strongresistance,thecalculationofthePIandPARratiosisnotsucienttoshow
thistypeofproblem.
Therefore,itisnecessarytosupplementthePIandDARindicationsbyadielectric
dischargetest(DD).
Thistestmeasuresthedielectricabsorptionofheterogeneousormulti-layerinsu-
lationwhileignoringtheparallel-surfaceleakcurrents.
Itconsistsofapplyingatestvoltageforaperiodsucienttoelectrically“charge”
theinsulationtobemeasured(atypicalvalueistheapplicationofa500Vvoltage
for30minutes).

Thetestvoltageischoseninthesamewayastheinsulationmeasurementinthe
SET-UPmenu.Thedevicethencausesafastdischargeduringwhichtheinsula-
tioncapacityismeasured, thenmeasured1minuteafterthe residual currentis
circulatingintheinsulation.
TheDDvalueiscalculatedfromtheformulabelow:

Theindicationoftheinsulationqualityasafunctionoftheresultingvalueisas

NOTE: The dielectric discharge test is suited for the insulation measurement of
rotating machines, and in general, for the insulation measurement of heteroge-
neous or multilayer insulation containing organic materials.
Using the R-DAR-PI-DD Function:
Duringoraftermeasurement,theR-DAR-PI-DD buttonallowsyoutoscrollthrough
thefollowingvalues:
• DAR(formeasurementslasting>1min)
• PI(formeasurementslasting>theprogrammedPItimes)
• DDcanonlybecalculated1minuteaftertheendoftheinsulationmea-
surementandcircuitdischarge,andonlyifitwasselectedbeforebegin-
ningthemeasurement.
• CapacitanceinµF(onlyafterthemeasurementhasstoppedandthecir-
cuithasbeendischarged)
• ResidualleakagecurrentcirculatingintheinstallationinµAornA

NOTE: During the measurement, the DAR value is not available if the DD value
was preselected before the measurement. The PI value is not available if DAR or
DD values were preselected before the measurement.

Automatic Measurement of DAR or PI:

NOTE: The input current may be a depolarization current resulting from an earlier
insulation measurement. It is recommended to start a new DAR and PI measure-
ment after the current has dropped to a negligible value (on the order of 100pA)
to avoid variations on these measurements.

a) DAR: PressSTART-theDARsymbolashesandthedisplayindicates“----”
aslongasthecalculationoftheratioisnotpossible(t<1mn).

2.5.4 / ALARM Button
First Function -
Turnsthedisplayback-lightON or OFF.
Second Function - ALARM
Activates/deactivates the ALARM function. The “ALARM” symbol is displayed
whenactivated.
Ifactivated,andthehighorlowthresholdvaluesareprogrammed,the“ALARM”
symbolashesandthebuzzer(ifactivated)soundscontinuouslywhenthethresh-
old is crossed.
Itispossibletoprogramadierentlimitineachfunction.Theselimitswillbestored
inmemoryevenafterthedeviceisturnedo.
ACTIVATING THE ALARM INDICATION BEFORE A TEST
ToactivatetheAlarmIndicationbeforeperformingatestyoumustgothroughthe
followingsteps:
• ProgramtheAlarmSetPointResistanceValuefortheTestVoltageyou
willbeusing.
• TurntheRotaryswitchtotheSetupposition.
• PresstheYellow2ndbuttonandthentheAlarmbuttontosetAlarms.The
rsttimeyoupress2nd&Alarmyouwillseethealarmsettingfor50volt
tests.
• Press2nd&Alarmbuttonsrepeatedlyuntilyouseethetestyouwishtoset
alarmsforinthetoplineofthedisplay.Thesequencingwillbe500,1000,
2500,5000,andset.
• UsethecursorkeystoadjusttheBlinkingvalue.FirstselectKΩ, MΩ, GΩ
or TΩusingtheUpArrowKey().
• Next,presstheRightArrowKey()tomovetothenextselectionwhich
isthegreaterthan(>)/lessthan(<)choice.UsetheUpArrowKeyto
makeyourselection.

• PresstheRightArrowKeyagainto movetotheResistance ValueSet
Point Selection. You can change this value digit by digit using the Up
Arrow/LeftArrowcombinationworkingfromthehighesttolowestdigit.
• Whennishedprogrammingthealarmsettings,placetherotaryswitchto
thedesiredtestfunction.
• Beforeinitiatingatest,presstheYellow2ndbuttonandtheAlarmbutton
toactivatetheAlarmNotication.Theword“ALARM”willappearinthe
lowerleftsideofthedisplay.
• Next,presstheroundyellowStart/Stopbuttontobeginthetest.TheAlarm
symbolwillashandthebuzzerwillsoundcontinuouslyiftheAlarmset
pointistripped.
NOTE: If the rotary switch is turned off prior to the next test, the alarm notification
will be deactivated. You will need to press the Yellow 2nd button and the Alarm
button to activate the Alarm Notification when you turn the unit back on before
starting the next test, if alarm notification is desired.
2.5.5 / Smooth Button
First Function -
Selectsthedesiredparametertobemodied-theselectedparameterashes.
Theashingparameterismodiedusingthe button(see§2.5.6).
Second Function - SMOOTH
Activatesadigitallterforinsulationmeasurement. It only has an eect on the
displayedvalues(whicharesmoothed)andnottheactualmeasurements.
Forexample,thisfunctionisusefulwhenthedisplayedinsulationvaluesarehighly
unstable,broughtaboutduetoacapacitivecomponentinthetestedelement.
