1.2 Definition of Measurement Categories
CAT I: Formeasurementsoncircuits notdirectlyconnectedtotheAC
supply wall outlet such as protected secondaries, signal level,
andlimitedenergycircuits.
CAT II: For measurements performed on circuits directly connected to
the electrical distribution system. Examples are measurements
onhouseholdappliancesorportabletools.
CAT III: For measurements performed in the building installation at
the distribution level such as on hardwired equipment in xed
installationandcircuitbreakers.
CAT IV: For measurements performed at the primary electrical supply
(<1000V) such as on primary overcurrent protection devices,
ripplecontrolunits,ormeters.

2.1 Description
The MR probes are a line of professionalAC/DC current probes. They
aredesignedtothelatestsafetyandperformancestandards.Twodiffer-
enthook-shapedjawsareoffered,bothpermittingtheuserto“pry”intoor
“hook”ontocables(willaccept2x500MCM)orsmallbusbars.
TheMRseriesusesHalleffecttechnology.Theelectronicsandbatteries
areself-containedinthehandles.TheoutputoftheAC/DCprobesis1mV/
Aand10mV/A.Anautozeropushbuttonensuresrapidandstablezeroing.
Thereisnooutputltering–TrueRMSwithDCcomponentsispossible.
Phaseshiftisexcellent,makingtheMRserieswellsuitedforpowerand
powerqualityapplications.
ModelMR461isaportable400AAC(600Apeak),600ADCcurrentprobe.

OPERATION
4.1 Making Measurements
• Connectthecurrentprobetotheproperinputchannelontheoscil-
loscope.
•
Beginwiththeleastsensitiverangeonthecurrentprobe(1mV/A).
• Selectthe0.5V/Divisiononyouroscilloscope.
• Turnoscilloscopepoweron.TurnontheModelMR461/561.The
greenLEDshouldbeon,theredLEDshouldbeoff.Ifthegreen
indicatordoesnotcomeonorgoesoffbeforetheprobehasoper-
atedfor10minutes,itisnecessarytoreplacethebattery.
• Afterapproximately10minutesofoperation,ifnoneofthecon-
trolbuttonshavebeenmanipulated,powerwillautomaticallyshut
off.
4.1.1 DC Measurement
• SelectDCpositionontheoscilloscope.
• “Zero”theprobe.Withtheprobedisconnectedfromtestsamples
(noconductorinprobejawwindow),presstheautozerobutton.
TheredLED (%)comeson forapproximatelythree secondsto
indicatethattheprobeiszeroing.IftheredLEDremainslit,this
indicates that zero has not been attained – repeat the zeroing
operation.Alternatively,youmay“zero”withtheoscilloscope.
•
Forbestaccuracy,especiallyonlow-levelmeasurement,itisrecom-
mendedthatyouzerotheprobebeforeeachmeasurement.
•
Clampthe probearound theconductor tobe tested.Theoscillo-
scopeshouldnowdisplaythemeasuredconductorcurrent.Aposi-
tivereadingindicatescurrentowinginthedirectionofthearrow
locatedonthesideofthejaw.Anegativereadingindicatescurrent
owintheoppositedirectionofthearrow.Multiplytheconversion
ratio(1mV/Aor10mV/A)timestheV/Divisionrangeonyouroscil-
loscopetogetthevalueofthecurrent.

4.1.2 AC Measurement
• SelecttheACpositionrangeontheoscilloscope.
• TheDCzeroadjustmentisnotrequiredwhenmeasuringACcur-
rent.
• Clamptheprobearoundtheconductortobetested.Theoscillo-
scopeshouldnowdisplaythemeasuredconductorcurrent.Apply
the conversion ratio (1mV/A or 10mV/A) times the V/Division
rangeonyouroscilloscopetogetthevalueofthepeakcurrent.
4.1.3 Indicator Lights: Green LED
• ThegreenLEDindicatesthattheprobeisonandthatthebattery
isgood.ThegreenLEDwillnotlightunderlowbatteryconditions.
Replacethe9VbatteryifthegreenLEDisnotlit.
• The red LED indicates a momentary or continuous overload of
theinstrument.ReadingstakenwhiletheredLEDisonorash-
ing should be considered inaccurate. Momentary or continuous
currentsexceeding60Apeakonthe60Arangeor600Apeakon
the600ArangefortheModelMR461,and150Apeakonthe150A
rangeor1500Aonthe1500ArangefortheModelMR561willtrig-
gertheredLED.
4.1.4 Making Measurements with the Banana/BNC
Connector
• TheprobesmaybeusedwithaDMMwiththeuseofaBanana/
BNCConnector(Cat.#2111.32).
• Plugtheprobeintothedisplaydevice(e.g.,DMM,logger).Note
thepolarityoftheprobeoutputbananaplugs(red=positive[+],
black=negative[-]).
• Selecttheappropriaterangeonthedisplaydevice.Notethatthe
probe’soutputsare1mV/Aand10mV/AACorDC.Notethemaxi-
mumcurrentcapabilityon10mV/Arange
• Turndisplaydevicepoweron.TurnontheModelMR:thegreen
LEDshouldbeon,andtheredLEDoff.Ifthegreenindicatordoes
notcomeonorgoesoffbeforetheprobehasoperatedfor10min-
utes,itisnecessarytoreplacethebattery.
•
Afterapproximately10minutes ofoperation,ifnoneof thecontrol
buttonshavebeenmanipulated,powerwillautomaticallyshutoff.

4.1.5 Auto-Off
• TheModelsMR461andMR561haveanAuto-offfeaturewhich
turns offthe instrument after 10 minutes if no control has been
used.
• When the probe is switched off by this automatic function, the
switchmustrstbesettotheoffpositionbeforetheprobemaybe
poweredupagain.
• Auto-offmaybedisabledatpower-upbytheuser.Simplypress
theautozerobuttonatthesametimeasmovingtheswitchfrom
theOFFpositiontooneoftheranges.ThegreenLEDblinksthree
timestoindicatethattheauto-offisdisabled.
4.2 Tips For Getting the Best Accuracy
TheModelsMR461andMR561arecapableofmeasuringDCto10KHz
currentsoverawiderange.Herearesomekeyconsiderationsforgetting
themostaccuracyfromyourdisplayinstrument:
• WhenusingtheModelsMR461andMR561withanoscilloscope,
itisimportant toselectthe rangethatprovides thebestresolu-
tion.
• Makesure that probe jawmating surfaces arefree of dust and
contamination.
• Bewareofshort-circuitcurrents.Largein-rushDCcurrents(which
canoccurwhenpowerisrstappliedinacircuit)andlargehigh-
current transients may cause varying degrees of residual read-
ings. If in doubt of a particular reading, remove the probe from
theconductorundertestandchecktoseethatthedisplaydevice
returnstozero.Ifnot,itwillbenecessarytorezerotheprobe.
