SS7400 SOIL SAVER ® - Basic Setup
ASSEMBLY SAFETY
CAUTION! TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY,
READ, UNDERSTAND AND FOLLOW
THE SAFETY INFORMATION BELOW.
•The person or persons who assemble this
machine must have the ability to read,
understand and follow the step by step
assembly procedures and safety instruction
outlined herein.
•Wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
such as, but not limited to, protection for
eyes, lungs, ears, head, hands and feet
when operating, servicing or repairing
equipment.
•Use lift crane, jack, tackle or fork lift truck to
lift heavy parts and assemblies.
•Keep clear of parts which may move or
drop when removing shipping straps or
brackets.
•Assembly area should be level, clean and
free of debris to prevent assembly
personnel from tripping or failing.
•Inspect all parts for sharp edges, grease, oil
or dirt which might cause injury during
assembly.
•If machine requires blocking up, use
blocking material of adequate strength and
in good condition. Blocks must be on a
smooth dry surface.
•Never place any part of your body under
blocked-up assemblies if at all possible.
•If welding or flame-cutting is required, be
sure no flammable materials are in the
area. Also, clear bystanders from area.
•After completing each assembly step,
review next step in procedure before
proceeding with that step.
•Neatly arrange parts and tools within easy
reach of work area.
•Openings in the skin and minor cuts are
susceptible to infection from hydraulic fluid.
If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at
once. Without immediate medical
treatment, serious infection can occur.
•Never use your hands to locate a hydraulic
leak. Use a piece of wood or cardboard.
Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can
penetrate the skin.
•Correct fluid leaks before using equipment.
BEFORE DELIVERY
•After completing assembly of machine, be
sure all nuts, bolts, other fasteners, and
hydraulic fittings are properly tightened.
•Be sure all safety guards and safety locking
devices are in place.
•Be sure machine is completely lubricated.
•Before operating the machine, be sure to
read the OPERATION section of operator’s
manual.
•Before delivering the machine, review
machine maintenance, operation, and
safety with the customer.
•Complete the Predelivery Inspection and
Service Report at the end of these
instructions.

UNPACKING
The Soil Saveris shipped in bundles identified with
tags. Be sure all bundles have been received before
starting assembly.
Open all bundles. Do not mix parts of one bundle
with those of another. Place all bundles where for
easy access.
The terms “right” and “left,” “front” and “rear” refer to
the machine as viewed by facing in the direction of
forward travel.

1. Place main frame on sturdy stands
approximately 36″high.
2. Mount shank assemblies on rear bar only (pp.
19 - 21). Install extensions if needed.
Note: Rear bar shanks are easier to mount
before rockshaft is installed.
3. Assemble rockshaft to rear of main frame with
bearings (grease fitting holes toward front of
machine) using 3/4" x 7-1/2" bolts, flat washers
and locknuts.
Note: Insert two 3/4" x 8" bolts in front holes of
two center bearings, but do not install locknuts.
Note: 9-shank models require six bearings from
separate bundle.
4. Install grease fittings in bearings.
5. Attach wheels to axle hubs with lug bolts.
TONGUE
1. Position tongue under main frame. using ten
3/4" x 7-1/2" bolts, flat washers and locknuts.
2. Install two 3/4" x 8" bolts in front hole of center
strap. Install 3/4" x 4" x 8-1/2" U-bolt and
locknuts. Do not yet tighten hardware. Support
front of tongue with a stand.
SLICERS
Mount slicer gang side channels, pivot shaft and
slicer gangs to front of main frame.
Note: Refer to main frame slicer mounting
instructions, p. 11.
TONGUE BRACES
1. Position tongue braces and install four
3/4" x 6-1/2" bolts and locknuts at front brace
plates.
2. Temporarily install clevis pin in top hole of brace
plates to assist in positioning tongue braces.
3. Attach rear of tongue braces to main frame
using four 3/4" x 4" x 7-1/2" U-bolts and
locknuts.
4. Tighten all tongue brace hardware keeping
braces against stops.
5. Tighten all main frame and rockshaft strap
hardware.
TURNBUCKLE
1. Install turnbuckle (double-nut end towards front)
using 1" x 3" clevis pins and cotter pins. Extend
(turn out) the ends of the turnbuckle 1" for initial
setting.
2. Place turnbuckle wrench in holder on tongue
brace and secure with hairpin clip.
HITCH
1. Install hitch clevis using 1-1/2" x 9-1/4" bolt,
washers, slotted nut and 3/8" x 2-1/2" spring pin.
2. Attach hitch jack to support hitch.
3. Attach hose support to tongue using bolt,
locknut, flat washers.
4. Locate cylinder lockup channel on hitch brace.
Secure with pin.
SHANKS
Mount remainder of shank assemblies on frame (pp.
19 - 21) if rear bar shanks were mounted earlier in
procedure. Otherwise, mount all shanks.
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
After completing the above instructions, begin
“Hydraulic System Assembly” beginning on p. 13.
IMPORTANT! Tighten all bolts to proper torque.

6. 11 & 13-Shank Models Only: Assemble frame
extensions to main frame using
3/4" x 3-1/2" bolts and locknuts. Do not yet
tighten.
TONGUE
1. Position tongue under main frame. using ten
3/4" x 7-1/2" bolts, flat washers and locknuts.
2. Install two 3/4" x 8" bolts in front hole of center
strap. Install 3/4" x 4" x 8-1/2" U-bolt and
locknuts. Do not tighten hardware. Support front
of tongue with a stand.
SLICERS
Mount slicer gang side channels, pivot shaft and
slicer gangs to front of main frame.
Note: Refer to main frame slicer mounting
instructions, p. 11.

3/4" x 7-1/2" bolts, flat washers and locknuts.
2. Install two 3/4" x 8" bolts in front hole of center
strap. Install 3/4" x 4" x 8-1/2" U-bolt and
locknuts. Do not tighten hardware. Support front
of tongue with a stand.
3. Install wing stop, with hose loops forward, using
four 3/4" x 8" bolts and locknuts.
SLICERS
Mount slicer gang side channels, pivot shaft and
slicer gangs to front of main frame.
Note: Refer to main frame slicer mounting
instructions, p. 11.
TONGUE BRACES
1. Position tongue braces and install four
3/4" x 6-1/2" bolts and locknuts at front brace
plates.
2. Temporarily install clevis pin in top hole of brace
plates to assist in positioning tongue braces.
3. Attach rear of tongue braces to main frame
using four 3/4" x 4" x 7-1/2" U-bolts and
locknuts.

hardware.

washers, slotted nut and 3/8" x 2-1/2" spring pin.

3. Attach hose support to tongue using bolt,
locknut, flat washers.
4. Locate cylinder lockup channel on hitch brace.
Secure with pin.
EXTENSIONS and HINGES
1. Mount extensions, offsets forward, to main frame
using 3/4" x 3-1/2" bolts and locknuts.
2. Attach front and rear wing hinges using
3/4" x 3-1/2" bolts and locknuts and
3/4" x 4" x 7-1/2" U-bolts and locknuts.
SHANKS
Mount remainder of shank assemblies on frame (pp.
19 - 20, 23) if rear bar shanks were mounted earlier
in procedure. Otherwise, mount all shanks.
IMPORTANT! Tighten all bolts to proper torque.

MAIN FRAME - FOLDING MODELS

15 & 17-SHANK MODELS
WING FRAMES
1. Assemble wing frame by placing it on stands at
same height as main frame stands.
2. Attach a hinge on front frame member using 3/4"
x 4" x 7-1/2", U-bolts and locknuts. Do not
tighten hardware.
3. Pin wing lift lug into hinge bottom hole using 1" x
3-1/8" pin and cotter pins.
IMPORTANT: Position wing lift lug as shown.
4. Attach a hinge on rear frame member using 3/4"
x 4" x 7-1/2" U-bolts and locknuts. Do not
tighten hardware.
5. Attach wing frame hinges to main frame hinges
using 2" x 7-7/16" pins, bolts and nuts.
Note: Frame gap at rear should be 2-1/4" and at
front of machine and a 2" gap at rear measured
plate-to-plate. Tighten hardware.
6. Mount shank assemblies on rear bar only (pp.
19 - 20, 23). Also install extensions if included.
Note: Rear bar shanks are easier to mount
before rockshaft is installed.
7. Attach wing rockshaft to rear of wing frame with
bearings, grease fitting holes to front, using 3/4”
x 7-1/2” bolts, flat washers and locknuts. Do not
tighten hardware.
8. Install wheel to axle hub using lug bolts.
9. Attach turnbuckle bracket to wing frame using
5/8" U-bolt and locknut. Align with rockshaft
plate.
10. Install turnbuckle (double nut towards front of
machine) using 1" x 3" clevis pins and cotter
pins.
11. Install scraper with two 5/8" x 2" bolts and
locknuts.
12. Mount shank assemblies on wing frame
(p. 23). Tighten shank hardware.

WING FRAME - FOLDING MODELS

ALL MODELS
1. Mount both left and right mounting channel
assemblies to main frame with 3/4" x 3-1/2" bolts
and locknuts.
2. Position pivot shaft with spring lugs to rear into
mounting channels and on top of bearing mount
on tongue. Secure to mounting channels and
bearing mount with bearings, 3/4" x 1-3/4" bolts
and locknuts. Do not tighten hardware. Mount
reflector bracket.
3. Position gang so gang bolt nut is toward outside
of right slicer gang. Assemble upper and lower
bearing, spacer, U-bolt and locknuts to center
bearing support. Do not tighten. Slide right
slicer gang under machine into bearing
assembly with slicer blades to front.
4. Fasten remaining end of slicer gang to channel
by placing an upper and lower bearing on gang
tube. Clamp bearings to channel with U-bolt,
lock washers and nuts.
5. Repeat for left slicer gang. Tighten all bolts.
6. Hook ears of pressure rod to hole in rear of bar
on gang frame. Secure with clevis pin and cotter
pin.
7. Attach center scraper under tongue and directly
behind bearing mount with U-bolt and locknuts.
8. Attach the turnbuckle between anchor on main
frame and anchor on pivot shaft.
Note: An optional hydraulic cylinder is available.
IMPORTANT! Tighten all bolts to proper torque.

MAIN FRAME SLICER

FOLDING MODELS
1. Mount gang channel to outer-end bar of wing
frame using 3/4" x 3-1/2" bolts and lock nuts.
2. Slide pivot shaft, with cylinder lug to rear,
between wing frame channel and gang mounting
channel. Secure with bearings, bolts and
locknuts.
Note: Pivot shafts are identified left “L” or right
“R”. Install accordingly.
3. Position gang so gang bolt nut is toward outside
of right slicer gang. Slide slicer gang frame
under wing frame channel and gang mounting
channel.
4. Fasten slicer gang with upper bearing on top of
slicer gang tube and lower bearing under slicer
gang tube. Clamp bearings and tube to frame.
5. Hook ears of pressure rod to hole in rear of bar
on gang frame. Secure with clevis pin and
cotter pin.
6. Attach turnbuckle between pivot shaft anchor
and wing frame anchor.
Note: An optional hydraulic cylinder is available.
IMPORTANT! Tighten all bolts to proper torque.

WING FRAME SLICER

CYLINDERS and HOSES
1. Mount 4" x 16" hydraulic cylinder with cylinder
base end to main frame and secure with cylinder
pin and hairpin clips (or cotter pins).
2. Install fittings and route hoses as shown.
3. IMPORTANT! Cycle cylinder (p. 17).
4. Secure rod end clevis to axle using cylinder pin
and hairpin clips (or cotter pins).
5. Fasten hoses to frame with plastic ties.
Refer to the Torque Values Chart (end of
instructions) for important information on the
tightening of straight-thread hydraulic fittings.
Also, do not use pipe sealant or Teflontape on
threads.
WARNING! OPENINGS IN THE SKIN AND MINOR
CUTS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO
INFECTION FROM HYDRAULIC FLUID.
IF INJURED BY ESCAPING FLUID, SEE
A DOCTOR AT ONCE. WITHOUT

CYLINDERS

1. Mount 4" x 16" main frame lift cylinder with:
- Base end to rockshaft cylinder anchor
- Rod end to axle cylinder anchor
Note: Do not fasten rod end until air is purged
from hydraulic circuit (next page).
Secure with cylinder pins and hairpin clips (or
cotter pins).
2. Mount wing lift cylinders with:
- Base ends to wing rockshaft anchors
- Rod ends to axle cylinder anchors
Note: Do not fasten rod ends until air is purged
from hydraulic circuit (next page).
Secure with cylinder pins and hairpin clips (or
cotter pins).
IMPORTANT! Each wing lift cylinder and main frame
lift cylinder is a different diameter. Install in locations
shown to ensure implement raises evenly.
3. Mount 4" x 16" wing fold cylinders, hose ports
up, with:
- Base ends to main frame cylinder anchors
- Rod ends to wing frame hinge
Note: Do not fasten rod ends until air is purged
from hydraulic circuit (next page).
Secure with cylinder pins and hairpin clips
(or cotter pins) at base end of cylinder.
Secure with 1" x 4-7/8" pin and spacers at rod
end. Place spacers on outside of
cylinder rod end clevis and secure with
cotter pins. See “Wing Frame Assembly.”
HOSES
Refer to the Torque Values Chart (end of
instructions) for important information on the
tightening of straight-thread hydraulic fittings.
Do not use pipe sealant or Teflontape on
threads.
1. Install fittings and route hoses as shown.
IMPORTANT! On wing-fold units, install
restrictors between elbows and cylinders.
2. Fasten hoses to frame with plastic ties.
IMPORTANT! Refer to “Charging the Hydraulic
System” (next page) before operating.

CHARGING THE CIRCUITS
The main lift cylinders on wing fold models are
connected in a series circuit. (Rigid models have
only one cylinder). Each cylinder has a different
diameter, with the smaller called a “slave” and the
larger a “master.” Both cylinders have a bypass port
at the rod end, allowing air to be purged from the
system when the cylinders are completely extended.
For the implement to raise and lower evenly and be
level, all cylinders must extend and retract the same
distance (within ±
14
″). If the implement raises
unevenly, purge the air from the hydraulic system.
Note: “Purging air” from the system is the same
procedure as “charging” the system with fluid.
IMPORTANT! Cylinder operation will be very erratic
and uneven until all air is purged from main lift and
wing fold circuits.
Note: Procedures below are normally used upon
initial machine assembly and after major
disassembly of hydraulic circuit(s).
Main Lift Circuit
1. With rod ends of lift cylinders disconnected,
slowly extend cylinders. When fully extended,
hold tractor valve open for 30 - 60 seconds,
allowing air to purge from system.
2. Fully retract and extend cylinder(s) several times
(usually3-4)tocompletely purge air from
circuit. Repeat Step #1 as required.
3. Fully extend cylinders and hold valve open for at
least two minutes with maximum flow (tractor at
high idle).
4. When cylinder(s) extend evenly and smoothly,
reconnect cylinders to wheel arms.
5. Slowly raise and lower machine. If cylinders
continue to operate in unison and implement
remains level, circuit is charged with fluid and air
is purged.
6. Check for and correct leaks if required.
7. Add hydraulic fluid to tractor as required.
Wing Fold Circuit
1. With rod ends of wing fold cylinders
disconnected, slowly extend and retract
cylinders. Repeat for several cycles.
Note: Cylinders are not the rephasing type.
2. When cylinders extend and retract evenly and
smoothly, Reconnect cylinders to wings.
3. Slowly raise and lower wings. If cylinders
continue to operate smoothly, circuit is charged
with fluid and air is purged.
4. Check for and correct leaks if required.
5. Add hydraulic fluid to tractor as required.
Slicer Lift Circuit - Rigid Models
Charge and purge air from the optional slicer lift
circuit, with standard cylinders, using the same
procedure as for the wing fold circuit.
Slicer Lift Circuit - Folding Models
Charge and purge air from the optional slicer lift
circuit, with rephasing-type cylinders, using the same
procedure as for the main lift circuit.
WARNING! RECHECK FLUID LEVEL IN
TRACTOR RESERVOIR AFTER
CHARGING AND PURGING AIR FROM
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. FAILURE TO
DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL
INJURY AND / OR DAMAGE TO
TRACTOR OR IMPLEMENT. ADD

REPHASING-TYPE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
Alternate Charging Procedure
IMPORTANT! If charging procedure on previous
page does not provide satisfactory results, use the
following procedure.
With both hoses disconnected at cylinder, cylinder
retracted and vertical (base down), and unattached
to implement:
1. Hold base end hose vertically and pour fluid into
hose until overflowing, without entrapping air.
2. With thumb over hose fitting, quickly connect
hose to base end cylinder fitting.
3. Pour fluid into rod end fitting until fluid overflows.
4. Repeat Steps #1, #2 for rod end of cylinder.

If the cylinders still do not respond properly, use one
of these procedures:
A. Starting with the smallest cylinder, repeat Steps
#1 - #5 above.
B. Disconnect all cylinder rod ends in circuit and
repeat entire procedure under “Main Lift Circuit,”
previous page.
If the lift cylinders appear to be fully charged but the
implement is not level, see “Cylinder Stroke,” this
page.
CYLINDER STROKE
If the hydraulic lift system is fully charged with no air
in the system and the implement is still not level
when raised, check the cylinder stroke.
Note: Rigid models have one cylinder; folding
models have three.
To check the 16″stroke main lift cylinder(s):
1. With cylinder completely retracted, measure
between pins of cylinder and record
measurement. Dimension should be

extended, repeat procedure in Step #1.

3. If any cylinder does not extend or retract to
these dimensions, adjust cylinder yoke(s)

FLUID QUANTITY
Rigid models hold approximately two gallons (7.6 L)
of hydraulic fluid, while the folding model requires
about five gallons (19 L).

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM CHARGING

GENERAL
For locating the shank position on the frame, refer to
the shank location diagrams on the following pages.
Mark shank holder locations on the frame as
indicated.
If using twisted shovels, install all shanks so shovels
throw soil inward except shovels near wheels.
Position those shovels to throw out- ward. On
assembly layout, “L” and “R” indicate left and right
throwing direction.
To ensure the chisel plow pulls evenly, install correct
number of RH and LH twisted shovels.
RIGID SHANK HOLDERS
Mount the shank holders on back of the bars with
two

″U-bolts. Tighten to 110 ft-lb
(149 N⋅m).
SPRING CUSHION SHANK HOLDERS
Mount shank assembly to frame with two

INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT! Mount optional deep-till shanks only
on the rear bar of implement.
1. Refer to following pages for deep-till shank
locations (same as standard shank rear bar
locations) and mark bar accordingly.
2. Deep-till shanks fit rigid or auto-reset shank
holders. Attach shank assemblies to rear bar,
and extensions if used, with hardware shown
(Figs. 1 and 3).
3. Install shank wear strips and points (Fig. 5 or 6).
4. Tighten all hardware.
Note: Refer to last page for torque values.
IMPORTANT! Inform operator to tighten bolts after
first four hours of operation.
