Introduction
This replacement kit provides everything needed to replace the Front Frame on an
Agilent MXA N9020A Signal Analyzer. If the existing Frequency Range Label can not be
re-used then a replacement label must be ordered separately.
Frequency Range Label Part Numbers
As described in the Service Guide, the Frequency Range Labels are not shipped with
Front Frame Assembly kits. It is possible to re-use the existing label. However, if it is
damaged or if the adhesive has degraded, a new one must be ordered. The following
table lists the label part numbers for each frequency range.

Installation Procedure
Standard Instrument (Benchtop Configuration)
NOTE Make sure any connectors on the front panel are removed.
1. Disconnect the instrument from ac power.
2. Refer to Figure 1. Using the T-20 driver, remove the 4 screws (1) (two on each side)
that attach the strap handles (2) on each side of the instrument.
3. Using the T-20 driver, remove the four screws (3) that hold the rear feet (4) in place.
4. Pull the instrument cover (5) off towards the rear of the instrument.

Option PRC Instrument (Portable Configuration)
NOTE Make sure any connectors on the front panel are removed.
1. Disconnect the instrument from ac power.
2. Refer to Figure 2. Using the T-20 driver, remove the four screws (1), two on each side,
to detach the Bail Handle Assembly (2) from the front frame.
3. Using the T-20 driver, remove the two screws (3) on each front bumper (4) and
remove from the front frame.

4. Using the T-20 driver, remove the four screws (6) (two on each side) that attach the
four hole plugs (5) from both sides of the instrument.
5. Refer to Figure 3. Using the T-20 driver, remove the four screws (1) that hold the
rear bumpers (2) in place.
6. Pull the instrument cover (3) off towards the rear of the instrument.

Front Frame Assembly Removal
1. Refer to Figure 4. Using the T-10 driver, remove the eight screws (1), four on each
side, to detach the front frame from the chassis.
2. Refer to Figure 5. Pull the front frame carefully away from the chassis. Remove the
ribbon cable W1 from the mother board.

3. Refer to Figure 6. Remove the RPG knob (17) by carefully pulling it off.

4. Refer to Figure 7. Ribbon cable W1 (26) must be separated from the back of the
display by pulling up to separate the velcro that is used to adhere the cable to the
bracket.

5. Disconnect the cable A1W2 (25) from the Front Panel Interface board (9).
6. Disconnect the flex circuit A1W1 (24) from the front panel interface board (9).
7. Remove the four screws (30) securing the display bracket (12) to the front frame.
The display can now be removed from the front frame.
CAUTION Once the display assembly has been removed from the front frame, the
glass filter is no longer secured. DO NOT tip the assembly in such a
manner that would cause it to fall out of place, as this may cause injury
and/or damage to the glass.
8. Carefully remove the glass filter, taking note of its orientation.
9. Remove the A1A5 Front Panel Daughter board (14) by removing the three screws
(28) and unplugging it from the front panel interface board.
10.Remove the thirteen screws (31) securing the A1A2 Front Panel Interface board (9)
to the front frame. The Front Panel Interface board with the keypad attached can
now be lifted from the front frame.
11.Locate the Front Frame from the kit.

12.It is going to be difficult to reuse the Frequency Range label from the existing front
frame. The Service Guide referencing this kit recommended that the appropriate
Frequency Range label also be purchased.
13.Set aside the existing front frame as a reference for later steps.
NOTE Refer to Figure 6 when assembling the remaining items into the new
front frame.
14.Install the A1A2 Front Panel Interface board/keypad assembly into the front frame,
and replace the thirteen screws (31) to secure to the front frame. Torque to 9 inch
pounds.
15.Replace the A1A5 Front Panel Daughter board (14) by plugging it into the Front
Panel Interface board using the board to board connectors and secure it with the
three screws (28). Torque to 9 inch pounds.
16.Install the glass filter. Dot on corner must be visible, triangular voids in corners must
be visible.
17.Place the display/bracket assembly into position in the front frame. Reconnect the
flex circuit A1W1 (24) to the front panel interface board.
18.Replace the four screws (30) that secure the display bracket to the front frame.
Torque to 9 inch pounds.
19.Reconnect the cable A1W2 (25) to the Front Panel Interface board (9).
20.Adhere the velcro on ribbon cable W1 (26) to the display.
21.Replace the RPG knob by firmly pressing it on.
22.Refer to Refer to Figure 5. Position the front frame in front of the instrument and
reconnect ribbon cable W1 to the motherboard.
23.Refer to Figure 4. Carefully position the front frame onto the chassis. Ensure no
cables are crushed. Replace the eight screws (1), four on each side of the chassis.
Torque to 9 inch pounds.

Final Installation for Standard Instruments
1. Locate the two vinyl Trim - sides from the kit (5041-9172). Peel off the self adhesive
backing and apply to the sides of the instrument front frame. Use the old front frame
as a reference.
2. Locate the top Trim Strip (standard) W1312-40019 from the kit. Use the old frame as
a reference to determine which trim strip to use.
3. Snap the top Trim Strip into place. Use the old frame as a reference.
4. Refer to Figure 1. Slide the instrument cover back onto the deck from the rear. The
seam on the cover should be on the bottom of the instrument. Be sure the cover seats
into the gasket groove in the Front Frame Assembly.
5. Replace the four rear feet (4) to the rear of the instrument using the four screws (3).
Torque to 21 inch pounds.
6. Replace the strap handles (2) on both sides of the instrument using the four screws
(1). Torque to 21 inch pounds.
Final Installation for Option PRC Instruments
1. Locate the top Trim Strip, top (Option PRC) W1312-40004 from the kit. Use the old
frame as a reference to determine which trim strip to use.
2. Snap the top Trim Strip into place. Use the old frame as a reference.
3. Refer to Figure 3. Slide the instrument cover back onto the deck from the rear. The
seam on the cover should be on the bottom of the instrument. Be sure the cover seats
into the gasket groove in the Front Frame Assembly.
4. Refer to Figure 3. Replace the four rear bumpers (2) to the rear of the instrument
using the four screws (1). Torque to 21 inch pounds.
5. Refer to Figure 2. Replace the four hole plugs (5) to both sides of the instrument
using the four screws (6). Torque to 21 inch pounds.
6. Refer to Figure 2. Replace the bail handle (2) (using the four screws (1)) and four
front bumpers (4) (using the two screws (3) on each) to the Front Frame Assembly.
Torque to 21 inch pounds.
NOTE Items 5041-9172 are not used with Option PRC, Portable Configuration
and can be discarded.

Functional Check:
1. Turn the instrument on and verify that the front panel display is functional.
2. Plug a USB mouse into both front panel USB ports and verify that they are functional
3. Press various front panel keys to verify they are functional and softkeys do change.
