Section 1
GettingStarted
This Quick Installation Guide only provides the basic instructions. For more
detailed information, please refer to the User’s Manual in the supplied CD.
Pleaserefertothefollowingdiagramstodeterminewhichoperatingmode
youshoulduseforyournetwork.

Step 1Connect one end of a network cable to the Network port of theAccess Point and connect the
otherendtoone of the LANports of the router (Seethediagrambelow).
Step 2Power on theAccess Point by connecting one end of the supplied power adapter to the power
jackoftheAccess Point and connectingtheotherendtoan electrical outlet.
Step 3 Verifythatall three lights on theAccessPointarelit.If not, verify that alltheconnectionsare
secureand try again.
Ifyouwant to use theAP421WasanAccessPoint with minimalconfiguration,justconnectit to your
existingrouterorswitchwithaCat.5networkcableandthenpoweriton.TheAccessPointisreadyto
usewith its defaultsettings:
SSID:default
Channel:6
Encryptions:disabled
Ifyouwanttoconfigure theAccess Point’ssettingsor set it to other operating modes, please follow the
restofthisguide.

Section 2
Gathering Information
Step 1 On the wired computer, go to Start, Run, type command (for Windows 95/98/ME) or cmd (for
Windows 2000/XP) and click OK.
Step 2Typeipconfig and pressEnter. Yournetwork settings will be displayed.
Step 3 Write down the values for theIPAddress, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway on a piece of
paper.
Step 4IfyouwanttosettheAP421Wto a mode other than anAccessPoint,writedownthefollowing
valuesfor your existing wirelessrouterorAP:
1. SSID (Network Name)
2. Channel Number
3. Wireless Security Settings
TheAP421W needs to use the same wireless settings in order for it to work properly.Youmaygather
theseinformation from thewebconfiguration utilityofyourwireless router.
Step 5 Referto theIPAddress you’ve written down from Step 3.
Ifthefirst three numbers ofyourIPAddress are192.168.1,thenyoudonot need toconfigureyour
computer’sIPAddress.Please continue to the next page.
Ifthefirstthree numbers of yourIPAddressarenot192.168.1, (Ex. 192.168.2), then pleasereferto
Section 4 of the User’s Manualin the provided CD for instructions on how to change the IPAddress.

Step 1 Open your Web Browser (Internet ExplorerorNetscape),enter theIPAddressof theAccess
Point(default:192.168.1.250) in theAddress Bar and press Enter.

Using Web Configuration Utility
Step 2 Enter admin for both the User name and Password and click OK.
You canusetheAccessPoint’sbuilt-inWebConfigurationUtilitytoconfigure the encryption settings and
operatingmodes.This section describes how to configure theAccessPoint’swirelessandsecurity
settings.Forinformationon the different operating modes, please refer to Section 4, Selecting
Operating Modes.
Note: If you have changed the IPAddress of theAccess Point, enter its
new IPAddress instead of the default.

Step 3 Atthe Wireless section, enter the SSID (Network Name) ofyour wireless network and the
channel number.
Step 4 Ifyouhave enabledencryptionforyour wireless network,you’llneed to configurethesame
securitysettingsontheAccessPointaswell.SelectEnable andclickonConfigure Security.

Step 5a Select the same level ofWEPencryption(64-Bits /128-Bits) of your wireless network from the
drop-downmenu.
WEP
Step 5b Enter the same WEP key (password) of your wireless network in the Key 1 field and click
Save. Skip to Step 8.

WPA
Step 6 Select WPAfrom the drop-down menu andenter all the applicable fields. Click Save and
proceed to Step 8.
Step 7SelectWPA-PSK from the drop-down menu and enter all the applicalble fields. Click Save and
proceed to Step 8.
WPA-PSK

Step 8 Click Apply to save the changes.
Step 9For best result, place theAccess Point at a central location where it is accessible to all the
wirelesscomputers.

Section 4
Step 1 Select the Operating Mode tab to display the Operating Mode page.
Step 2 Select the desired mode and enter the remoteAccess Point’s MAC address.You can find the
targetMAC address from the remoteAP’swebconfigurationutility.
SelectingOperatingModes
This section describes how to change theAccess Point’s operating modes.
Step 3 ClickApply tosave the changes.

AP Client
TheAPClient mode converts theAccess Point to a wireless network adapter, allowingthenetwork
devicesuchasyourcomputerorgameconsoletobecomeawirelessclient.
Step 1Select AP Client and enter the MAC address of the remoteAP or click on the Available
Networks buttontoscan for any availablewirelessnetwork.
Step 2 Select the desired wireless network from the list.
Step 3 ClickApply toconfirmtheselection.

Step 4 ClickApply tosave the changes.
Step 5 Once theAccess Point hasrestarted,youmaydisconnectitfrom the wireless router and connect
ittothe Ethernet port of yourcomputerorgameconsole.

AP Repeater
TheAPRepeater mode converts theAccess Point to a wireless repeater. By extending the wireless
signalofthesourceAP/wirelessrouter, the wireless coverage is expanded.
Step 1Select AP Repeater and enter the MAC address of the remoteAP (sourceAP/wireless router)
andclickApply tosavethechanges.
Step 2 Once the Repeater has restarted,you may disconnect itfromthewirelessrouter.Forbestresult,
placetheRepeater at a centrallocationbetweenthewireless router and your wirelesscomputers.

Point to Point Bridge (WDS)
ThePoint to Point Bridge mode convertstheAccess Point to a wireless bridge. It bridges the network
clientsfrom two physically separateLANSintoonevirtual LAN.
Step 1 Select Point to Point Bridge and enter the MAC address of the remoteAP and click Apply to
savethe changes.
Step 2 Configurethe otherAccess Point with reciprocal settings.

Section 5
Connecting to theAccess Point
Onceyouhave properly configured theAccessPoint, your wirelesscomputersshouldbeable to detect
itssignal.
Useyourwireless network adapter’sutility todetectandconnectto theAccess Point. Youcan identify the
Access Point by its MACAddress, which is displayed in the BSSID field of your wireless network
adapter’s utility.
You cancheck theAccess Point’s MACAddress onitsbottom label.
Ifthesignalisweak,tryreorientingtheAccessPoint’s antenna or relocate theAccess Point to a different
place.
