GettingStarted
This Quick Installation Guide only provides basic instructions. For more detailed
information, please refer to the User’s Manual in the supplied CD.
Pleaserefertothefollowingdiagramstodeterminewhichoperatingmode
youshoulduseforyournetwork.
Ifyouwant to use theAP431WasanAccess Pointwithminimalconfiguration,just connect it toyour
existingrouterorswitchwithaCat.5networkcableandthenpoweriton.TheAccess Point is ready to
usewith its defaultsettings:
SSID:default
Channel:6
Encryption:disabled
Ifyouwanttoconfigure theAccess Point’ssettingsorsetittootheroperatingmodes,please follow the
restofthisguide.

Step 1 Connect one end of a network cable to the Network port of theAccess Point and connect the
other end to oneof the LAN ports of the router (Seethe diagram below).
Step 2 Power on theAccess Point by connecting one end of the supplied power adapter to the power
jackoftheAccess Point and connecting theotherendtoanelectrical outlet.
Step 3 Verifythatallthree lightsontheAccess Point are lit.Ifnot,verifythat all the connections are
secureand try again.

Gathering Information
Step 1 From a computer connected to the router with a cable, go to Start, Run, type command (for
Windows 95/98/ME) or cmd (for Windows 2000/XP) and click OK.
Step 2Typeipconfig andpressEnter.Your network settings will be displayed.
Step 3 Write down the values for the IPAddress, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway on a piece of
paper.
Step 4 Ifyou want to set theAP431Wtoamodeotherthan anAccess Point, write down the following
valuesfor your existing wirelessrouterorAP:
1. SSID (Network Name)
2. Channel Number
3. Wireless Security Settings
TheAP431Wneedstousethe same wireless settings in order for it to work properly.Youmaygatherthis
informationfrom thewebconfiguration utility ofyourwireless router.
Step 5 Refer tothe IPAddress you’ve written down from Step 3.
Ifthe first three numbers ofyourIPAddress are192.168.1,then you do notneedtoconfigure your
computer’s IPAddress.Pleasecontinuetothe next page.
Ifthefirstthree numbers of your IPAddress arenot192.168.1,(Ex.192.168.2),thenplease refer to
Section 4 of the User’s Manualin the provided CD for instructions on how to change the IPAddress of
theAccessPoint.

Step 1 OpenyourWebBrowser (Internet ExplorerorNetscape),enter the IPAddress of theAccess
Point (default: 192.168.1.250)intheaddressbarandpressEnter.

Using Web Configuration Utility
Step 2 Enter admin for both the User name and Password and click OK.
Youcanuse theAccess Point’sbuilt-in WebConfiguration Utility to configure theencryptionsettingsand
operatingmodes.This section describes how to configure theAccess Point’swirelessandsecurity
settings.Forinformationon the different operating modes, please refer to Section 5, Selecting
Operating Modes.
Note: If you have changed the IPAddress of the Access Point, enter its
new IPAddress instead of the default.

Step 3 Atthe Wireless section,enter the SSID (Network Name) for your wireless network and select a
Channel number.
Step 4 Youmayenableencryption(authentication) for yourwirelessnetwork for securitypurpose,orto
matchthe encryption settings of yourexistingAccess Point. Select anencryptionmodefrom the Authen-
tication drop-downlist.

Step 4a WEP is a basic encryption type for wireless network.
•Open System and disabling Encryption implies no encryption
•Open System and enabling Encryption implies WEP open system mode
•Shared Key and enabling Encryption implies WEP shared key mode
•Open System/Shared Key and enabling Encryption implies WEP auto switch mode
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
Step 4b Enable Encryption, and select the same Key Type and Key Size (64-Bits / 128-Bits / 152
Bits)from the drop-downmenusfor your wirelessnetwork.
Enterthesamekey (password) of your wireless network in the First Key field and click Apply.

Step 4c WPA-PSK and WPA-2PSK are more secured than WEP and highly recommended. Select
WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK from the drop-down menu and enterthekeyvalueinthe PassPhrase. Click
Apply.

Step 1 Select the Operating Mode tab to display the Operating Mode page.

This section describes how to change theAccess Point’s operating modes.
This mode allows yourwirelesscomputerstoconnect to your wirednetwork.(Defaultmode)
Access Point

AP Client
TheAPClientmodeconvertstheAccess Pointtoawirelessnetworkadapter, allowing the network
devicesuchasyourcomputerorgameconsoletobecomeawirelessclient.
Step 1 Select APClient andentertheMAC address of theAPyou want to connect to. You can also click
ontheScan buttontodisplaythe available wireless networks, and select the desiredwirelessnetwork
fromthe list.
Step 2 Click Apply tosave the changes.
Step 3 OncetheAccess Point has restarted, youmaydisconnectitfromthewireless router and connect
ittotheEthernetport of your computer or game console, and reboot theAccess Point.
