1 Description of instrument
1.1 Description

1.2 Function
X-rays excite the atoms of the sample, causing them to emit radiation. This
radiation is measured by a semiconductor detector.
The instrument comes with a preset method of analysis installed. Data are already
stored in the instrument's memory. The measured values are compared with these
data. After the measurement is complete, the results for an unknown sample are
displayed on the screen.
The sample material can be solid or powdery.

2 Safety
Every user of the instrument must have understood these operating instructions.
This applies in particular to the safety regulations.
2.1 Symbols used
The following symbols are used in these abbreviated operating instructions and/or
on the instrument.
If required, additional important information is available in connection with these
symbols.

2.2 User information
Compliance with all safety instructions is mandatory. It's for your own safety.
The instrument - in its transport packaging - may only be transported by
specialized organizations or by specifically trained personnel.
Unpacking, installation, setup and connection of the instrument may only be
performed by service personnel that is authorized by the manufacturer.
Only carry out operator maintenance work that is described in Chapter 6 of
the operating manual. The operating personnel are not permitted to carry out
any other maintenance work. Any further services (e.g. technical
maintenance) or repairs must only be performed by service personnel that are
authorized by the manufacturer.
Comply with all safety instructions and accident prevention regulations at all
times while operating and maintaining the instrument. These are set out in a
DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance) regulation or an equivalent
national regulation.
The safety measures must be checked following every technical maintenance
or repair activity. The checking procedure is carried out in accordance with
DGUV V3 or an equivalent national regulation.
Comply with the maintenance schedule specified by the manufacturer and
record all maintenance activities. This serves to ensure maintenance of the
operational reliability of the instrument.
Never tamper with the safety devices! If you suspect that a safety device is
not working properly, switch off the instrument immediately! Please contact
your Service Center.
Compliance with the information labels on the instrument is mandatory.
Only genuine spare parts must be used when repairing the instrument. The
use of non-genuine spare parts will make the CE Declaration of Conformity
null and void.
The instrument may only be connected to power grids with a protective
grounding conductor (PE).
The instrument may be operated only in a dry environment (protection class
IP 22, DIN 40050).
If an instrument is on a sloping surface and is equipped with wheels, it could
roll away during operation. Secure the instrument while in operation. This
applies also when the instrument is being transported.
Compliance with the relevant safety regulations when using tools and
operating equipment is mandatory.
Prior to opening the instrument, detach the power plug.

2.3 Intended use
Only solid, liquid or powdery substances may be analyzed with this instrument.
2.4 Prohibited operating conditions
Do not operate the instrument if one of the following conditions exists:
If the instrument is faulty or damaged.
If the instrument is not maintained at regular intervals.
If the ambient conditions do not comply with the specification.
If the area where the instrument is used is not a commercial/industrial
premise.
2.5 Residual risks
This instrument has been manufactured in accordance with the state of the art.
Nevertheless, a residual risk cannot be completely excluded.
Danger! Risk of electric shock!
The spectrometer produces electric voltages of up to 48 kV.
Shut down the instrument immediately if damaged.
Caution! Danger of poisoning!
The ray exit window of the X-ray tube and the detector window contain beryllium.
Vapors or dust of beryllium and its compounds are toxic and hazardous to your
health when inhaled.
Do not touch this window.
Should you have broken the beryllium window of the detector, immediately
seal off the measurement window of the spectrometer with adhesive tape.
This ensures that no broken beryllium window pieces can leave the
spectrometer. Switch off the spectrometer and inform the service department
of SPECTRO. The detector and the spectrometer can no longer be used.
Caution! Risk of crushing injuries!
When closing the sample chamber lid, there is an inherent risk of crushing injuries.
When closing the sample chamber lid keep the fingers out of the sample
chamber.

Caution! Ionizing radiation!
This spectrometer operates with ionizing radiation (X-rays). The safety devices
ensure that the spectrometer can be operated only in a safe, closed and shielded
condition.
Never tamper with the safety devices.
If you are concerned that the safety devices do not work properly, shut down
the spectrometer immediately. Please contact your Service Center.
The results of the ambient dose rate measurements are an integral part of the
documentation supplied with the spectrometer (radiation protection
certificate).
Caution! Risk of injury due to laser radiation!
The instrument uses a laser pointer of protection class II. Your eyes will suffer
damage if you look at this laser pointer for an extended period of time.
Therefore never look directly at the laser pointer.
Note
If the instrument is in its normal operating mode (standby or measuring mode), it
produces ionizing radiation (X-rays).
The safety circuits in the instrument are designed so that either the sample
chamber flap or the shutter must be closed. Otherwise, the X-ray tube will be
deactivated.
The sample chamber flap is locked while the shutter is open. This prevents
accidental opening of the sample chamber flap.
The sample chamber flap can only be opened again after the shutter is closed (at
the end of the measurement).
For your safety, the safety circuits are checked automatically.

Please observe the national safety and approval regulations in force in your
country and state!

4 Transportation/Setting-up
The instrument - in its transport packaging - may only be transported by
specialized organizations or by specifically trained personnel.
Unpacking, installation, setup and connection of the instrument may only be
performed by service personnel that is authorized by the manufacturer.
Note! Measurement errors!
Shocks to the instrument during the measuring process may result in
measurement errors.
Therefore, shocks to the instrument when taking measurements must
be avoided.
Avoid mechanical impacts.
Measurement errors may result from temperature differences inside the
instrument.
Install the instrument so that it cannot heat up on one side only.
Observe the following information regarding the instrument's installation/transport:
Always keep the instrument upright when transporting it.
Always use the handles to carry the instrument (see also page 6/Fig.
1/point 6).
Save the shipping box in case you have to ship the instrument to the service
department at a later date.
When setting up the spectrometer, ensure that all sides are easy to access for
maintenance, repair and connection/disconnection purposes.
Set up the instrument to ensure the power isolators (switches and power
cable) can be easily reached.
All necessary cables and hoses are included in the delivery.
If the instrument is to be moved to another place of installation after set-up,
there is a risk of damaging the instrument. Contact the SPECTRO Service
Department in this matter.

4.1 Storage
Storage conditions:
The instrument must be stored in a dry place
Room temperature: +2 °C – +40 °C (36 °F – 104 °F)
4.2 Gas supply (optional)
The optional gas flush is performed using helium.
A suitable pressure reducer is required for the gas supply.
Output pressure 2 – 3 bar; (29 – 44 psi)
Gas is supplied via PTFE hose (included in Spectro’s scope of supply).
Dimensions: 6 x 1 mm, length 3 m
This supply hose is plugged into the connection on the rear side of the unit.

4.3 Uninterruptible power supply – UPS
Note
The first installation of the UPS must be performed by a technician who is
authorized by SPECTRO.
If you would like to retrofit the instrument, please order the retrofitting set:
Part number 71000229: UPS 230V/50-60HZ + accessories
Part number 71000230: UPS 110V/60HZ + accessories
Notice! Risk of damage!
Without a UPS, the X-ray tube may be damaged in case of frequent power
failures.
When a UPS is available, ensure that the entire power supply system of
the instrument is connected to the UPS.
Connecting a laser printer to the UPS may destroy the UPS.
Never connect a laser printer to the UPS.
If the instrument is equipped with the vacuum option, this UPS must not be
used.
If possible, ensure to provide an uninterrupted power supply
In case of a power failure, the UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) sends a signal
to the instrument. The instrument is then shut down in a controlled manner. In the
case of extended power failures, the computer is shut down after a given amount
of time.

When changing or reconnecting the UPS, proceed as follows:
1. Connect all components with the UPS (spectrometer, PC, monitor, etc.)
2. Connect the UPS with the power supply.
3. Switch on the UPS.
4. Switch on the components (spectrometer, PC, monitor, etc.)
The UPS is now installed.

5.3 Switching on the instrument
Notice! Reduction in service life!
If the instrument is switched on and off very frequently, its service life will be
reduced (the X-ray tube being particularly affected).
Whenever possible, leave the instrument on.
Note
When turning on the spectrometer after a long period of downtime, the following
conditions must be taken into consideration:
If the spectrometer was shut down for more than two days, the X-ray tube
must be run under standby conditions for at least 20 minutes. Start measuring
only after this period.
If the spectrometer was shut down for more than one month, the X-ray tube
must be run under standby conditions for at least 1 hour. Start measuring only
after this period.
Otherwise, the service life of the X-ray tube will be reduced significantly.
If the spectrometer is operated inside an air-conditioned room, a constant
ambient temperature must be maintained. If the room temperature was
changed, wait at least 30 minutes before switching on the spectrometer.
Otherwise, the results of the measurements will be falsified.
To switch on the instrument, proceed as follows:
1. Turn the key switch to the horizontal position.
2. Press the “ON/OFF” button of the instrument.
3. Switch on the computer.
The operating system is booted.
4. Start the user software via the button on the screen or the task bar.
5. Log in to the software program when prompted to do so.
6. If the instrument has been off for longer than a day, please follow the
instructions concerning the warm-up of the tube.
The warm-up instructions are supplied together with the instrument.

7. If after logging in you are not in “Measurement” mode, please switch to this
mode by clicking on “Measurement” (under OPERATION) in the top left half of
the screen.
8. Under the video image click on the green “Launch Communication Server”
button.
9. Wait until the initialization procedure for the instrument has been carried out
and then click on “Enter HV-Standby” to switch the device to standby mode.
The instrument is on. In order to ensure stable measurement conditions, it is
highly recommended to wait 20 minutes before starting the measurements.
Recalibrate the instrument (see Chapter 6.2).

Measure a reference sample.

5.4 Switching off the instrument
Notice! Risk of damage!
If the spectrometer is not used for longer than a day (weekends, vacation
shutdown), please switch off the instrument.
If you do not work with the system for an extended period of time, the X-ray
tube must be operated in standby mode for at least one hour once a month.
This procedure is also required if the instrument is not to be used afterwards.
To switch off the instrument, proceed as follows:
1. Click on the symbol on the Windows task bar and exit the instrument
software program.
A window opens.
2. Click on “Shutdown”. The connection between the PC and the instrument is
broken.
3. Confirm the security query and also confirm the shutoff of the high-voltage
supply.
If at this particular moment the X-ray tube is still on, the high-voltage
supply is automatically switched off in steps.
4. To end the software program, right-click on the symbol and then click on
“Close Window”. Alternatively, you can select the “Close” symbol on the top
right of the screen.
5. Turn the key-operated switch to its horizontal position.
6. Press the “ON/OFF” button of the instrument.
7. Select the “Start” menu in the Windows user interface and then the “Exit”
command.
The computer is switched off.
The instrument is switched off.
