1.1 Description

1.2 Function
X-rays excite the atoms of the sample, causing them to emit radiation. This
radiation is measured by a semiconductor detector.
The instrument comes with a preset method of analysis installed. Data are already
stored in the instrument's memory. The measured values are compared with these
data. After the measurement is complete, the results for an unknown sample are
displayed on the screen.

1.3 Overview
The instrument is designed for a measurement distance of 5 mm. A scissor lift
table is used to adjust the sample to be measured to the correct distance.
The instrument is available with various stop configurations:

2 Safety
Every user of the instrument must have understood these operating instructions.
This applies in particular to the safety regulations.
2.1 Symbols used
The following symbols are used in these abbreviated operating instructions and/or
on the instrument.
If required, additional important information is available in connection with these
symbols.
Warning! Risk of injury!

2.2 User information
Compliance with all safety instructions is mandatory. It's for your own safety.
The instrument - in its transport packaging - may only be transported by
specialized organizations or by specifically trained personnel.
Unpacking, installation, setup and connection of the instrument may only be
performed by service personnel that is authorized by the manufacturer.
Only carry out operator maintenance work that is described in Chapter 6 of
the operating manual. The operating personnel are not permitted to carry out
any other maintenance work. Any further services (e.g. technical
maintenance) or repairs must only be performed by service personnel that are
authorized by the manufacturer.
Comply with all safety instructions and accident prevention regulations at all
times while operating and maintaining the instrument. These are set out in a
DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance) regulation or an equivalent
national regulation.
The safety measures must be checked following every technical maintenance
or repair activity. The checking procedure is carried out in accordance with
DGUV V3 or an equivalent national regulation.
Comply with the maintenance schedule specified by the manufacturer and
record all maintenance activities. This serves to ensure maintenance of the
operational reliability of the instrument.
Never tamper with the safety devices! If you suspect that a safety device is
not working properly, switch off the instrument immediately! Please contact
your Service Center.
Compliance with the information labels on the instrument is mandatory.
Only genuine spare parts must be used when repairing the instrument. The
use of non-genuine spare parts will make the CE Declaration of Conformity
null and void.
The instrument may only be connected to power grids with a protective
grounding conductor (PE).
The instrument may be operated only in a dry environment (protection class
IP 22, DIN 40050).
If an instrument is on a sloping surface and is equipped with wheels, it could
roll away during operation. Secure the instrument while in operation. This
applies also when the instrument is being transported.
Compliance with the relevant safety regulations when using tools and
operating equipment is mandatory.
Prior to opening the instrument, detach the power plug.

2.3 Intended use
Only solid substances weighing up to 20 kg may be analyzed with this instrument.
The instrument is designed as a table-top device and intended solely for operation
in enclosed rooms.
2.4 Prohibited operating conditions
Do not operate the instrument if one of the following conditions exists:
If the instrument is faulty or damaged.
If the instrument is not maintained at regular intervals.
If the ambient conditions do not comply with the specification.
If the area where the instrument is used is not a commercial/industrial
premise.
2.5 Residual risks
This instrument has been manufactured in accordance with the state of the art.
Nevertheless, a residual risk cannot be completely excluded.

The instrument produces X
-ray radiation when it is switched on.
Warning of hazardous voltage!
The spectrometer produces electric voltages of up to 50 kV.

Shut down the instrument immediately if damaged.
Warning of toxic substances!
The ray exit window of the X
-ray tube and the detector window contain beryllium.
Vapors or dust of beryllium and its compounds are toxic and hazardous to your
health when inhaled.

Therefore never touch these windows.
Warning of hand injury!
Your fingers may get crushed when closing the sample chamber lid.

When closing the sample chamber lid keep your fingers out of the sample
chamber.

Warning of ionizing radiation!
This instrument operates with
ionizing radiation (X-rays). The safety devices
ensure that the instrument can be operated only in a safe, closed and shielded
condition.

Never tamper with the safety devices.

If you feel that the safety devices do not work properly, shut down the
instrument immediately. Please contact your Service Center.
Warning! Risk of injury due to laser radiation!
The instrument uses a laser pointer of protection class I. Your eyes will suffer
damage if you look at this laser pointer for an extended period of
time.

Therefore never look directly at the laser pointer.
Information
The safety circuits in the instrument are designed so that either the sample
chamber lid or the shutter (=> protective shield upstream of X
-ray tube which is
being opened for taking
the measurement) must be closed. Otherwise, the X-ray
tube will be deactivated.
The sample chamber lid is locked while the shutter is open. This prevents
accidental opening of the sample chamber lid.
The sample chamber lid can only be opened again after th
e shutter is closed (at
the end of the measurement).
For your safety, the safety circuits are checked automatically.

2.6 Radiation protection advice
2.6.1 Germany
According to the German X-ray regulations, the approval procedure applies only
for Germany. Compliance with the applicable safety regulations is mandatory!
If operating the instrument in Germany, it requires the official approval in
compliance with §3 of the German Radiation Protection Ordinance - (RöV dated
January 8, 1987 in the version of its publication dated April 30, 2003, last
amendment dated December 11, 2014).
Before operating the instrument, approval must be obtained from the supervisory
authority in the respective country of installation, if such rules apply. In Germany,
(where there are different rules applicable in different German federal states),
compliance with § 3 of the German X-ray regulations is mandatory.
2.6.2 Other countries
The operation of the instrument may require official approval in other countries.
Compliance with the national safety and approval regulations in force in your
country and/or state is mandatory! Please contact the responsible local approval
authority.

4 Transportation / Setting-up
Only instructed personnel may transport, unpack, install, and start up the
instrument.
Information: Measurement errors!
Shocks to the instrument during the measuring process may result in
measurement errors.
Therefore, shocks to the instrument when taking measurements must
be avoided.
Avoid mechanical impacts.
Measurement errors may result from temperature differences inside the
instrument.
Install the instrument so that it cannot heat up on one side only.
Notice! Damage to instrument
If the instrument is to be moved to another place of installation after set
-up, there
is a risk of damaging the instrument.
Contact the SPECTRO Service Department
in this matter.
Compliance with the following information is required regarding the instrument's
transport and setup:
Always transport the instrument in a horizontal position, ensuring its legs are
pointing down. Always have two persons transport the instrument! To this
end, use both of your hands to reach underneath the housing.
Avoid mechanical impacts.
Save the shipping box in case you have to ship the instrument to the service
department at a later date.
All connections are located at the rear side.
Set up the instrument to ensure the power isolators (switches and power
cable) can be easily reached.
When setting up the instrument, ensure that all sides are easy to access
for maintenance, repair and connection/disconnection purposes.
All necessary cables are included in the delivery.

4.1 Storage
Storage conditions:
The instrument has to be stored in a dry place.
Room temperature: -10 °C – +50 °C (14 °F – 122 °F).
Avoid storing the instrument at very low temperatures.
4.2 Uninterruptible power supply – UPS (option)
Notice! Damage to instrument
Without a UPS, the X
-ray tube may become damaged in case of frequent power
failures.

When a UPS is available, ensure that the instrument, including the PC, is
connected to the UPS. Please do not connect the laser printer to the UPS.
Information
The first installation of the UPS must be performed by a technician who is
authorized by SPECTRO.
If you would like to retrofit the instrument, please order the retrofitting set:
Part number 71000229: 230V/50-60HZ UPS and accessories, or
Part number 71000230: 110V/60HZ UPS and accessories
In case of a power failure, the UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) sends a signal
to the instrument. The instrument is then shut down in a controlled manner. In the
case of extended power failures, the computer is shut down after a given amount
of time.

When changing or reconnecting the UPS, proceed as follows:
1. Connect all components with the UPS (instrument, PC, monitor, etc.)
2. Connect the UPS with the power supply.
3. Switch on the UPS.
4. Switch on the components (instrument, PC, monitor, etc.).
The UPS is now installed.

5.3 Switching on the instrument
Information
Ensure that the ambient conditions specified in Chapter
3 are maintained.
To switch on the instrument, proceed as follows:
1. Turn the key switch to its vertical position.
2. Switch on the computer.
The operating system is booted.
3. Click the “XRF Analyzer Pro” button on the screen to start the routine dialog
of the XRF Analyzer Pro measurement program.
4. Log in to the software program when prompted to do so.
Username: admin
Password: admin
Further passwords for various groups can be found in the “XRF-Analyzer Pro User
Guide” document by pressing the F1 key.

6. For the purpose of checking the safety circuits you will be prompted to open
and close the sample chamber lid. Follow the instructions on the screen.
7. Wait until the initialization procedure for the instrument has been carried out
and then click on “Activate Standby Mode” to switch the instrument to standby
mode.
The instrument is switched on. In order to ensure stable measurement
conditions, it is highly recommended to wait 20 minutes before starting the
measurements.

5.4 Switching off the instrument
If the instrument is switched on and off very frequently, its service life will be
reduced (the X-ray tube being particularly affected).
Always leave the instrument switched on if possible.
Information

If the spectrometer is not used for longer than a day (weekends, vacation
shutdown), switch off the instrument. Whenever the instrument is switched on
again, the X-ray tube must be run under standby conditions for at least 20
minutes. Start measuring only after this period.

If you do not work with the system for an extended period of time, the X-ray
tube must be operated in standby mode for at least one hour once a month.
This procedure is also required if the instrument is not to be used for
measurements afterwards.
To switch off the instrument, proceed as follows:
1. Click on the symbol on the Windows task bar and exit the instrument
software program.
A window opens.
2. Click on “Shutdown”. The connection between the PC and the instrument is
canceled.
3. Confirm the security query and also confirm the shutoff of the high-voltage
supply.

4. To end the software program, right-click on the symbol and then click on
“Close Window”. Alternatively, you can select the “Close” symbol on the top
right of the screen .
5. Turn the key switch to the horizontal position.
6. Select the “Start” menu in the Windows user interface and then the “Exit”
command.
The computer is switched off.
The instrument is switched off.
