Installation overview
This overview outlines the steps required to install your series 8400 switch product and where to find further
instructions for each step.
Handle your Aruba 8400 Switch components with care. Rough or careless handling can damage the
components and result in unplanned down time.

General procedure
Procedure
1. Unpack the switch components. See Unpacking the Switch components on page 11.
2. Remove certain installed components for weight reduction before manually lifting the chassis. See Remove
installed components from the chassis on page 14.
Skip this step if you are using a mechanical lift for all chassis movement and mounting steps.
3. Move the chassis to the mounting location. See Move the chassis to the mounting location on page 16.
4. (Optional) Mount the chassis in a non-rack installation. See (Optional) Installing the chassis in a non-rack
mounted position on page 18.
5. (Optional) Mount the chassis in a 2-post or 4-post rack. See Mounting the chassis in a rack on page 19.
6. Install the switch components. See Install switch components on page 24.
7. Connect the switch to a power source. (Connect one power cord for each installed power supply.)
8. After the Network Operating System (NOS) boot-up completes, inspect the switch LEDs for proper operation.
(See Activating the switch on page 29.)
9. Bring up the Command Line Interface (CLI) by using a console cable to connect the switch to a computer
running terminal emulation software. (See Connect a console cable and display the console prompt on
page 34.

Installation precautions and guidelines
Using a mechanical lift to raise, lower, and move the Aruba 8400 chassis is the recommended best practice
procedure. If a mechanical lift is used, care should be taken to ensure that the configured weight does not exceed
the maximum load capacity of the lift.
Install any uninstalled components after mounting the switch.

• To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to equipment, heed all warnings and cautions
throughout the installation instructions.
• The switch is very heavy. To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment,
observe local occupational health and safety requirements and guidelines for manual material
handling.
• Avoid personal injury due to the combined weight of the chassis and installed components. If your
installation process includes manually lifting or carrying the chassis instead of using a mechanical
lift, then the removable components listed below must be uninstalled first. This reduces the
combined weight of the chassis and components to 60 kg (132 lbs) or less. For the weight of each
individual component, see Product weights on page 13.
◦ Remove these components from the chassis to minimize weight.
– All power supplies
– All line modules
– Two fan trays
◦ Attach the four removable handles provided with the chassis.
◦ Use a team of four people to raise, lower, and carry the chassis

• Mount devices installed in a rack or cabinet as low as possible. Install the heaviest devices at the
bottom and progressively lighter devices above.
• To prevent the rack or cabinet from becoming unstable and/or falling over, ensure that it is
adequately secured.
• Ground the switch reliably. See Ground the switch on page 23.
• Mounting a chassis with the front even (flush) with the front of a two-post rack is not supported
and can result in a hazardous weight distribution in the rack. See Using a two-post rack mount
on page 19.

• Protect the switch and its components from damage caused by ESD (Electrostatic discharge):
◦ See the ESD information in the online Aruba 8400 Switch Series Installation and Getting
Started Guide at http://www.hpe.com/support/manuals.
◦ Always wear an ESD wrist strap when handling the switch or its components. Ensure the strap
is reliably grounded when installing or removing switch components.

◦ Hold management modules, line modules, and fabric modules by their edges. Do not touch
any electronic components or printed circuitry.
◦ Store uninstalled modules in antistatic bags.
• Do not ship the switch in a rack without first checking for restrictions in the Aruba 8400 Switch
Series Installation and Getting Started Guide at http://www.hpe.com/support/manuals.
Otherwise, you may void the switch warranty.
• Remove any installed management modules and line modules from the Aruba 8400 switch
chassis before shipping the chassis in a rack. Shipping the chassis mounted in a rack with
management and line modules installed may void the warranty. Also, install slot covers over all
empty management module and line module slots.
• Ensure the power source circuits for your 8400 Series switch are properly grounded. Connect the
switch to the power sources by using the power cords supplied with the switch or power supply
units.
• If your installation requires different power cords than the ones supplied with the switch or power
supplies, be sure the cords are adequately sized for the current requirements. In addition, be sure
to use a power cord displaying the mark of the safety agency that defines the regulations for
power cords in your country. The mark is your assurance that the power cord can be used safely
with the switch and power supply. For more on power cords, see Power cord information on
page 37.
• When installing the switch, the AC outlets should be near the switch and be easily accessible in
case it must be powered off.
• Do not install the switch in an environment where the operating ambient temperature exceeds its
specification. (See Environmental, safety, and electrical information on page 36.)
• Ensure that the switch does not overload the power circuits, wiring, and over-current protection.
To determine the possibility of overloading the supply circuits, add the ampere ratings of all
devices installed on the same circuit as the 8400 Series switch. Then compare the total with the

rating limit for the circuit. The maximum ampere ratings are usually printed on the devices near
their AC power connectors.
• Ensure that the air flow through the chassis is not restricted. Leave a front and rear clearance of
at least 30 cm (11.8 inches) for air flow. Air flow direction is front-to-rear.

• If a power supply must be removed, and then reinstalled, wait at least 5 seconds before
reinstallation. Otherwise, damage to the switch or its components may occur. The power supply
needs this time to dissipate any retained power.
• The switch requires three fully populated fan trays. Each fan tray holds six replaceable fan
modules. For more information on fan trays and fan module requirements, see the Aruba 8400
Switch Series Installation and Getting Started Guide at http://www.hpe.com/support/manuals .
• Install a slot cover on any module or power supply slot that is not in use.
• The Aruba 8400 Switch Series chassis and accessories do not include any user-serviceable
parts. For service, please contact your Aruba authorized representative.
• For rack-free mounting requirements and warnings, see (Optional) Installing the chassis in a
non-rack mounted position on page 18.
• Protect the equipment from AC power fluctuations and temporary interruptions with a regulating
facility Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) device. This device protects the hardware from
damage caused by power surges and voltage spikes, and keeps the switch in operation during a
power failure.

Unpacking the switch components
Prerequisites
Identify the components received with your Aruba 8400 Switch Series chassis.
Some components may ship separate from the pallet on which you received your 8400 Series
chassis.
Procedure
1. Open the top of carton.
a. Remove the documentation folder.
b. Read the warning information included in the Unpacking Information booklet.
The switch is heavy. To avoid possible injury, see the Unpacking Information booklet before
moving the switch.
2. Remove all of the accessories.
3. Lift the top carton off of the chassis.
4. Remove any remaining packing material covering the switch.

5. Pull the poly covering away to expose the top, front, sides, and rear of the chassis.
6. Verify that the components you ordered are included in the shipment(s) you received. Components may
include the following items shipped either on a pallet or in one or more separate packages.

Remove installed components from the chassis
Skip this section and see Move the chassis to the mounting location on page 16 if you are using a
mechanical lift for all chassis movement and mounting steps.
A fully populated Aruba 8400 switch weighs up to 118 kg (260 lbs). If you are manually moving the
switch, or if the configured weight exceeds the lift capacity, then use the steps in this section to
reduce the weight of the switch for safe manual moves.
To prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to switch components, follow these guidelines:
• Ground the switch reliably. For more information on how to ground your switch, see the
Installation and Getting Started Guide for your switch at http://www.hpe.com/support/manuals.
• Always wear an ESD wrist strap and make sure it is reliably grounded when installing or removing
modules or other components. For information on how to use an ESD wrist strap, see the Aruba
8400 Switch Series Installation and Getting Started Guide for your switch at http://
www.hpe.com/support/manuals.
• Hold modules by their edges. Do not touch any electronic components or printed circuit.
• Store uninstalled modules in antistatic bags for future use.
The following sections list the steps for removing chassis components.
Remove installed power supply units
Procedure
Handle your Aruba 8400 switch power supplies with care. Rough or careless handling can damage
the power supplies and result in unplanned down time.
1. Remove the bezel, if installed.
2. Remove all installed power supply units.
3. Install power supply slot covers on all power supply slots.

Remove any installed line modules
Procedure
Handle your Aruba 8400 switch line modules with care. Rough or careless handling can damage the
modules and result in unplanned down time.
1. Remove any installed line modules from slots 1 through 4 and slots 7 through 10.

2. Place removed line modules in anti-static bags.
3. Install module slot covers on all empty module slots.
Leave any installed Management modules in the chassis. Removal of power supplies, line
modules, and two of the three fan trays is sufficient to reduce the chassis weight for four-person
lifting and moving.

Procedure
Handle your Aruba 8400 switch fan trays and fan modules with care. Rough or careless handling can
damage these components and result in unplanned down time.
1. Select a fan tray to remove.
2. Loosen the four retaining screws securing the fan tray to the chassis.
3. Using the two vertical fan tray handles, grasp and slide the fan tray out of the fan tray slot.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to remove a second fan tray.
It is not necessary to remove a third fan tray from the switch to achieve the necessary chassis
weight reduction for manual lifting.
Fabric modules are installed at the factory and need not be removed before moving the chassis. If
it becomes necessary to remove a fabric module, see the Aruba 8400 Switch Series Installation
and Getting Started Guide.
After completing the preceding actions, the switch weight is sufficiently reduced for carrying by four people using
the provided lift handles.

Move the chassis to the mounting location
Manually moving the chassis
Prerequisites
If you are using a mechanical lift, skip this step and see Using a mechanical lift to move the chassis on page
17.
• Two fan trays, all line modules, and all power supply units are removed from the chassis.
• The four lift handles shipped with the switch chassis are available for use.
• Ensure that the equipment rack or other switch mounting site is prepared to receive the chassis. See Site
preparation on page 6.
Procedure
1. Remove the foam cushions from the right and left side of the chassis. Ensure that the breakaway foam pieces
at the chassis base on each side of the chassis are removed, exposing the bottom edge of each side of the
chassis.
2. Pull away the poly bag covering the chassis to expose the bottom edge of the chassis on both sides.
3. Install the four lifting handles; two on each side of the chassis.
a. Insert the lifting handle hooks into the sockets on the bottom edge of the chassis. Use the guide labels
provided for each handle position to orient the handle for attachment.

b. Slide the handle to the front until the handle latch engages and the front edge of the handle lines up with
the "Lock" label.

4. Using four people, carefully lift the chassis and move it to the mounting location.
The rear handles bear more of the chassis weight than the front handles.
Using a mechanical lift to move the chassis
Prerequisites
A fully populated Aruba 8400 switch weighs up to 118 kg (260 lbs). Ensure that the combined weight
of the chassis with all components installed does not exceed the maximum load capacity of your
mechanical lift.
If you are not using a mechanical lift, then skip this section and see Manually moving the chassis
on page 16.
If you are using a mechanical lift to move and mount the chassis, then it is not necessary to remove the switch
components unless the combined weight of the chassis and installed components exceeds the maximum load
capacity of the lift. If the lift capacity is less than 118 kg (260 lbs), then see Product weights on page 13 for
details on determining the populated weight of your switch. Then determine which components to remove to lower
the chassis weight to less than the maximum load capacity of your lift.
Procedure
1. Remove the packaging materials and remove any uninstalled components from the shipping pallet. Ensure
that the breakaway foam piece at the chassis base on the front panel is removed to expose the bottom edge of
the front panel.
2. Position the mechanical lift on the same level as the front, bottom edge of the chassis, and touching the
chassis.
3. Slide the chassis as far forward as possible onto the lift.
4. Raise the lift enough to allow it to clear the shipping pallet.
5. Move the chassis to its mounting location.
Raise the chassis only as high as needed to clear any obstacles in the path to the mounting
location.

• The switch is heavy. As a best practice, use a mechanical lift to move the switch to the mounting
location.
• If you choose to lift or move the switch manually:
◦ Remove the power supply units, two fan trays, and all installed line modules.
◦ Use four persons and the four provided lift handles to lift and move the chassis. (Installed
Management modules can remain in the switch while it is being manually moved.) See
Remove installed components from the chassis on page 14.
◦ Mount devices installed in a rack or cabinet as low as possible. Install the heaviest device at
the bottom and install progressively lighter devices above.
Prerequisites
• Site preparation is completed (Site preparation on page 6).
• You have read the Installation precautions and guidelines (Installation precautions and guidelines on page
7).
(Optional) Installing the chassis in a non-rack mounted
position
Skip this step if you plan to mount the switch in an equipment rack.
The following conditions must be met when performing a rack-free installation:
• A fully-populated switch can weigh up to 118 kg (260 lb). The object supporting the switch must be able to
withstand this weight.
• The switch should be supported by a sturdy, flat surface.
The chassis is not equipped with rubber feet. Take care to avoid marking or scratching the
mounting surface.
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to equipment in a rack-free environment:
• Never stack the Aruba 8400 chassis on top of another chassis or other equipment. See Site
preparation on page 6.
• Never place equipment on top of the Aruba 8400 chassis.
• Never place the Aruba 8400 chassis on a surface that cannot support the weight of a fully
populated chassis, which is 118 kg (260 lbs).
Manually positioning the chassis on a non-rack mount surface
Skip this section if you plan to use a mechanical lift to move the chassis.
Procedure
1. Ensure that site preparation for the mounting site has been completed. See Site preparation on page 6.
2. Move the switch to the mounting site as described under Move the chassis to the mounting location on
page 16.

3. Position the switch with the rear of the chassis resting on the mounting surface.
4. Remove the rear lifting handles from both sides of the chassis.
5. Slide the chassis onto the mounting surface until the front lifting handles are 2.5 cm (1in) from the edge of the
mounting surface.
6. Remove the front lifting handles from the chassis.
7. Carefully slide the chassis into the desired position on the mounting surface.
8. Store the lifting handles for future use and go to Ground the switch on page 23.
Using a mechanical lift to position the chassis on a non rack mount surface
Procedure
1. Move the switch to the mounting site as described under Move the chassis to the mounting location on
page 16.
2. Position the switch with the rear of the chassis over the mounting surface.
3. Lower the chassis until its rear edge rests on the mounting surface.
4. Carefully slide the chassis onto the mounting surface and into the desired position.
5. Remove the mechanical lift and go to Ground the switch on page 23.
Mounting the chassis in a rack
Mount devices installed in a rack or cabinet as low as possible. Install the heaviest device at the
bottom and install progressively lighter devices above.
Cooling air enters through the chassis front panel and exhausts through the chassis rear panel.
Ensure that there is adequate airflow space of 30 cm (11.8 inches) between the front and rear panels
of the chassis and other equipment or obstructions.
Using a two-post rack mount
1. Install the included JL374A Aruba X462 2-post Rack Kit in your two-post rack. See the rack mount hardware
installation instructions in the Aruba 8400 Switch Series Installation and Getting Started Guide at http://
www.hpe.com/support/manuals.
2. Measure the distance between the posts where the switch is to be installed. If the space is less than 44.7 cm
(17.5 in), then remove the side plates to reduce the chassis width.
3. Attach the rack ears to the chassis in one of the four positions shown. Mount the rack ears with the flange
toward the front of the switch. See the Aruba 8400 Switch Series Installation and Getting Started Guide at
http://www.hpe.com/support/manuals for details on selecting the mounting position for the rack ears.
